Ternary rings of operators arising from inverse semigroups

We are interested in properties, especially injectivity (in the sense of category theory), of the ternary rings of operators generated by certain subsets of an inverse semigroup via the regular representation. We determine all subsets of the extended bicyclic semigroup which are closed under the triple product $xy^*z$ (called semiheaps) and show that the weakly closed ternary rings of operators generated by them (W*-TROs) are injective operator spaces.

Derivations and Projections on Jordan Triples. An introduction to nonassociative algebra, continuous cohomology, and quantum functional analysis

This paper is an elaborated version of the material presented by the author in a three hour minicourse at "V International Course of Mathematical Analysis in Andalusia," Almeria, Spain, September 12-16, 2011. Part I is devoted to an exposition of the properties of derivations on various algebras and triple systems in finite and infinite dimensions, the primary questions addressed being whether the derivation is automatically continuous and to what extent it is an inner derivation. Part II discusses cohomology theory of algebras and triple systems, in both finite and infinite dimensions. Although the cohomology of associative and Lie algebras is substantially developed, in both finite and infinite dimensions, the same could not be said for Jordan algebras. Moreover, the cohomology of triple systems has a rather sparse literature which is essentially non-existent in infinite dimensions. Thus, one of the goals of this paper is to encourage the study of continuous cohomology of some Banach triple systems. Part III discusses three topics, two very recent, which involve the interplay between Jordan theory and operator space theory (quantum functional analysis). The first one, a joint work of the author, discusses the structure theory of contractively complemented Hilbertian operator spaces, and is instrumental to the third topic, which is concerned with some recent work on enveloping TROs and K-theory for JB*-triples. The second topic presents some very recent joint work by the author concerning quantum operator algebras. One section in Part III is devoted to the subject of contractive projections, which play an important role in the structure theory of Jordan triples.

Triple derivations on von Neumann algebras

It is well known that every derivation of a von Neumann algebra into itself is an inner derivation and that every derivation of a von Neumann algebra into its predual is inner. It is less well known that every triple derivation (defined below) of a von Neumann algebra into itself is an inner triple derivation. We examine to what extent all triple derivations of a von Neumann algebra into its predual are inner. This rarely happens but it comes close. We prove a (triple) cohomological characterization of finite factors and a zero-one law for factors. Namely, we show that for any factor, the linear space of triple derivations into the predual, modulo the norm closure of the inner triple derivations, has dimension 0 or 1: It is zero if and only if the factor is finite.

Automatic continuity of derivations on C*-algebras and JB*-triples

We introduce the notion of a Jordan triple module and determine the precise conditions under which every derivation from a JB*-triple E into a Banach (Jordan) triple E-module is continuous. In particular, every derivation from a real or complex JB*-triple into its dual space is automatically continuous. Among the consequences, we prove that every triple derivation from a C*-algebra A to a Banach triple A-module is continuous. In particular, every Jordan derivation from A to a Banach A-bimodule is a derivation, a result which complements a classical theorem due to B.E. Johnson and solves a problem which has remained open for over ten years.

Ternary Weakly Amenable C*-algebras and JB*-triples

A well known result of Haagerup from 1983 states that every C*-algebra A is weakly amenable, that is, every (associative) derivation from A into its dual is inner. A Banach algebra B is said to be ternary weakly amenable if every continuous Jordan triple derivation from B into its dual is inner. We show that commutative C*-algebras are ternary weakly amenable, but that B(H) and K(H) are not, unless H is finite dimensional. More generally, we inaugurate the study of weak amenability for Jordan Banach triples, focussing on commutative JB*-triples and some Cartan factors.

Contractively complemented subspaces of pre-symmetric spaces

In 1965, Ron Douglas proved that if $X$ is a closed subspace of an $L^1$-space and $X$ is isometric to another $L^1$-space, then $X$ is the range of a contractive projection on the containing $L^1$-space. In 1977 Arazy-Friedman showed that if a subspace $X$ of $C_1$ is isometric to another $C_1$-space (possibly finite dimensional), then there is a contractive projection of $C_1$ onto $X$. In 1993 Kirchberg proved that if a subspace $X$ of the predual of a von Neumann algebra $M$ is isometric to the predual of another von Neumann algebra, then there is a contractive projection of the predual of $M$ onto $X$. We widen significantly the scope of these results by showing that if a subspace $X$ of the predual of a $JBW^*$-triple $A$ is isometric to the predual of another $JBW^*$-triple $B$, then there is a contractive projection on the predual of $A$ with range $X$, as long as $B$ does not have a direct summand which is isometric to a space of the form $L^\infty(Ω,H)$, where $H$ is a Hilbert space of dimension at least two. The result is false without this restriction on $B$.

Classification of contractively complemented Hilbertian operator spaces

We construct some separable infinite dimensional homogeneous Hilbertian operator spaces which generalize the row and column spaces R and C. We show that separable infinite-dimensional Hilbertian JC*-triples are completely isometric to an element of the set of (infinite) intersections of these spaces. This set includes the operator spaces R, C, their intersection, and the space spanned by creation operators on the full anti-symmetric Fock space. In fact, we show that these new spaces are completely isometric to the space of creation (resp. annihilation) operators on the anti-symmetric tensors of the Hilbert space. Together with the finite-dimensional case studied in our previous paper, this gives a full operator space classification of all rank-one JC*-triples in terms of creation and annihilation operator spaces. We use the above to show that all contractive projections on a C*-algebra A with infinite dimensional Hilbertian range are ``expansions'' (which we define precisely) of normal contractive projections from the second dual of A onto a Hilbertian space which is completely isometric to one of the four spaces mentioned above. This generalizes the well known result, first proved for B(H) by Robertson, that all Hilbertian operator spaces that are completely contractively complemented in a C*-algebra are completely isometric to R or C. We also compute various completely bounded Banach-Mazur distances between these spaces.

Representation of contractively complemented Hilbertian operator spaces and the Fock space

The operator spaces $H_n^k$ $1\le k\le n$, generalizing the row and column Hilbert spaces, and arising in the authors' previous study of contractively complemented subspaces of $C^*$-algebras, are shown to be homogeneous and completely isometric to a space of creation operators on a subspace of the anti-symmetric Fock space. The completely bounded Banach-Mazur distance from $H_n^k$ to row or column space is explicitly calculated.
