Non-existence of translation-invariant derivations on algebras of measurable functions

Let $S(0,1)$ be the $*$-algebra of all classes of Lebesgue measurable functions on the unit interval $(0,1)$ and let $(\mathcal{A},\left\|\cdot \right\|_\mathcal{A})$ be a complete symmetric $Δ$-normed $*$-subalgebra of $S(0,1)$, in which simple functions are dense, e.g., $L_\infty (0,1)$, $L_{\log}(0,1)$, $S(0,1)$ and the Arens algebra $L^ω(0,1)$ equipped with their natural $Δ$-norms. We show that there exists no non-trivial derivation $ δ: \mathcal{A} \to S(0,1)$ commuting with all dyadic translations of the unit interval. Let $\mathcal{M}$ be a type $II$ (or $I_\infty$) von Neumann algebra, $\mathcal{A}$ be its abelian von Neumann subalgebra, let $S(\mathcal{M})$ be the algebra of all measurable operators affiliated with $\mathcal{M}$. We show that any non-trivial derivation $δ:\mathcal{A} \to S(\mathcal{A})$ can not be extended to a derivation on $S(\mathcal{M})$. In particular, we answer an untreated question in \cite{BKS1}.

Notes on derivations of Murray--von Neumann algebras

Let $\mathcal{M}$ be a type II$_1$ von Neumann factor and let $S(\mathcal{M})$ be the associated Murray-von Neumann algebra of all measurable operators affiliated to $\mathcal{M}.$ We extend a result of Kadison and Liu \cite{KL} by showing that any derivation from $S(\mathcal{M})$ into an $\mathcal{M}$-bimodule $\mathcal{B}\subsetneq S(\mathcal{M})$ is trivial. In the special case, when $\mathcal{M}$ is the hyperfinite type II$_1-$factor $\mathcal{R}$, we introduce the algebra $AD(\mathcal{R})$, a noncommutative analogue of the algebra of all almost everywhere approximately differentiable functions on $[0,1]$ and show that it is a proper subalgebra of $S(\mathcal{R})$. This algebra is strictly larger than the corresponding ring of continuous geometry introduced by von Neumann. Further, we establish that the classical approximate derivative on (classes of) Lebesgue measurable functions on $[0,1]$ admits an extension to a derivation from $AD(\mathcal{R})$ into $S(\mathcal{R})$, which fails to be spatial. Finally, we show that for a Cartan masa $\mathcal{A}$ in a hyperfinite II$_1-$factor $\mathcal{R}$ there exists a derivation $δ$ from $\mathcal{A}$ into $S(\mathcal{A})$ which does not admit an extension up to a derivation from $\mathcal{R}$ to $S(\mathcal{R}).$

Local And 2-Local Derivations On Algebras Of Measurable Operators

The present paper presents a survey of some recent results devoted to derivations, local derivations and 2-local derivations on various algebras of measurable operators affiliated with von Neumann algebras. We give a complete description of derivation on these algebras, except the case where the von Neumann algebra is of type II$_1$. In the latter case the result is obtained under an extra condition of measure continuity of derivations. Local and 2-local derivations on the above algebras are also considered. We give sufficient conditions on a von Neumann algebra $M$, under which every local or 2-local derivation on the algebra of measurable operators affiliated with $M$ is automatically becomes a derivation. We also give examples of commutative algebras of measurable operators admitting local and 2-local derivations which are not derivations.

Self-adjoint cyclically compact operators and their applications

This paper is devoted to self-adjoint cyclically compact operators on Hilbert--Kaplansky module over a ring of bounded measurable functions. The spectral theorem for such a class of operators are given. We apply this result to partial integral equations on the space with mixed norm of measurable functions and to compact operators relative to von Neumann algebras. We will give a condition of solvability of partial integral equations with self-adjoint kernel. Moreover, a general form of compact operators relative to a type I von Neumann algebra is given.

$2$-Local derivations on von Neumann algebras

The paper is devoted to the description of $2$-local derivations on von Neumann algebras. Earlier it was proved that every $2$-local derivation on a semi-finite von Neumann algebra is a derivation. In this paper, using the analogue of Gleason Theorem for signed measures, we extend this result to type $III$ von Neumann algebras. This implies that on arbitrary von Neumann algebra each $2$-local derivation is a derivation.

2-Local derivations on matrix algebras over semi-prime Banach algebras and on $AW^\ast$-algebras

The paper is devoted to 2-local derivations on matrix algebras over unital semi-prime Banach algebras. For a unital semi-prime Banach algebra $\mathcal{A}$ with the inner derivation property we prove that any 2-local derivation on the algebra $M_{2^n}(\mathcal{A}),$ $n\geq 2,$ is a derivation. We apply this result to $AW^\ast$-algebras and show that any 2-local derivation on an arbitrary $AW^\ast$-algebra is a derivation.

Local derivations on subalgebras of $τ$-measurable operators with respect to semi-finite von Neumann algebras

This paper is devoted to local derivations on subalgebras on the algebra $S(M, τ)$ of all $τ$-measurable operators affiliated with a von Neumann algebra $M$ without abelian summands and with a faithful normal semi-finite trace $τ.$ We prove that if $\mathcal{A}$ is a solid $\ast$-subalgebra in $S(M, τ)$ such that $p\in \mathcal{A}$ for all projection $p\in M$ with finite trace, then every local derivation on the algebra $\mathcal{A}$ is a derivation. This result is new even in the case standard subalgebras on the algebra $B(H)$ of all bounded linear operators on a Hilbert space $H.$ We also apply our main theorem to the algebra $S_0(M, τ)$ of all $τ$-compact operators affiliated with a semi-finite von Neumann algebra $M$ and with a faithful normal semi-finite trace $τ.$

Measurable bundles of Banach algebras

In the present paper we investigate Banach--Kantorovich algebras over faithful solid subalgebras of algebras measurable functions. We prove that any Banach--Kantorovich algebra over faithful solid subalgebras of algebra measurable functions represented as a measurable bundle of Banach algebras with vector-valued lifting. We apply such representation to the spectrum of elements Banach--Kantorovich algebras.

Geometric characterization of $L_1$-spaces

The paper is devoted to a description of all strongly facially symmetric spaces which are isometrically isomorphic to $L_1$-spaces. We prove that if $Z$ is a real neutral strongly facially symmetric space such that every maximal geometric tripotent from the dual space of $Z$ is unitary then, the space $Z$ is isometrically isomorphic to the space $L_1(Ω, Σ, μ),$ where $(Ω, Σ, μ)$ is an appropriate measure space having the direct sum property.

Innerness of continuous derivations on algebras of measurable operators affiliated with finite von Neumann algebras

This paper is devoted to derivations on the algebra $S(M)$ of all measurable operators affiliated with a finite von Neumann algebra $M.$ We prove that if $M$ is a finite von Neumann algebra with a faithful normal semi-finite trace $τ$, equipped with the locally measure topology $t,$ then every $t$-continuous derivation $D:S(M)\rightarrow S(M)$ is inner. A similar result is valid for derivation on the algebra $S(M,τ)$ of $τ$-measurable operators equipped with the measure topology $t_τ$.

Spatiality of derivations on the algebra of $τ$-compact operators

This paper is devoted to derivations on the algebra $S_0(M, τ)$ of all $τ$-compact operators affiliated with a von Neumann algebra $M$ and a faithful normal semi-finite trace $τ.$ The main result asserts that every $t_τ$-continuous derivation $D:S_0(M, τ)\rightarrow S_0(M, τ)$ is spatial and implemented by a $τ$-measurable operator affiliated with $M$, where $t_τ$ denotes the measure topology on $S_0(M, τ)$. We also show the automatic $t_τ$-continuity of all derivations on $S_0(M, τ)$ for properly infinite von Neumann algebras $M$. Thus in the properly infinite case the condition of $t_τ$-continuity of the derivation is redundant for its spatiality.
