On the Pohozaev identity for quasilinear Finsler anisotropic equations

In this paper we derive the Pohozaev identity for quasilinear equations \begin{equation}\tag{$E$}\label{eq:p} -\operatorname{div}(B'(H(\nabla u))\nabla H(\nabla u))=g(x, u) \quad \text {in}\,\, Ω, \end{equation} involving the anisotropic Finsler operator $-\operatorname{div}(B'(H(\nabla u))\nabla H(\nabla u))$. In particular, by means of fine regularity results on the vectorial field $B'(H(\nabla u))\nabla H(\nabla u)$, we prove the identity for weak solutions and in a direct way.

Regularity and symmetry results for nonlinear degenerate elliptic equations

In this paper we prove regularity results for a class of nonlinear degenerate elliptic equations of the form $\displaystyle -\operatorname{div}(A(|\nabla u|)\nabla u)+B\left( |\nabla u|\right) =f(u)$; in particular, we investigate the second order regularity of the solutions. As a consequence of these results, we obtain symmetry and monotonicity properties of positive solutions for this class of degenerate problems in convex symmetric domains via a suitable adaption of the celebrated moving plane method of Alexandrov-Serrin.

A regularity result for the p-laplacian near uniform ellipticity

We consider weak solutions to a class of Dirichlet boundary value problems invloving the $p$-Laplace operator, and prove that the second weak derivatives are in $L^{q}$ with $q$ as large as it is desirable, provided $p$ is sufficiently close to $p_0=2$. We show that this phenomenon is driven by the classical Calderón-Zygmund constant. As a byproduct of our analysis we show that $C^{1,α}$ regularity improves up to $C^{1,1^-}$, when p is close enough to 2. This result we believe it is particularly interesting in higher dimensions $n>2,$ when optimal $C^{1,α}$ regularity is related to the optimal regularity of $p$-harmonic mappings, which is still open.

Monotonicity in half-spaces of positive solutions to $-Δ_p u=f(u)$ in the case $p>2$

We consider weak distributional solutions to the equation $-Δ_pu=f(u)$ in half-spaces under zero Dirichlet boundary condition. We assume that the nonlinearity is positive and superlinear at zero. For $p>2$ (the case $1<p\leq2$ is already known) we prove that any positive solution is strictly monotone increasing in the direction orthogonal to the boundary of the half-space. As a consequence we deduce some Liouville type theorems for the Lane-Emden type equation. Furthermore any nonnegative solution turns out to be $C^{2,α}$ smooth.

Qualitative properties of positive solutions to nonlocal critical problems involving the Hardy-Leray potential

We prove the existence, qualitative properties and asymptotic behavior of positive solutions to the doubly critical problem $$ (-Δ)^s u=\vartheta\frac{u}{|x|^{2s}}+u^{2_s^*-1}, \quad u\in \dot{H}^s(\mathbb{R}^N).$$ The technique that we use to prove the existence is based on variational arguments. The qualitative properties are obtained by using of the moving plane method, in a nonlocal setting, on the whole $\mathbb{R}^N$ and by some comparison results. Moreover, in order to find the asymptotic behavior of solutions, we use a representation result that allows to transform the original problem into a different nonlocal problem in a weighted fractional space.

Qualitative properties and classification of nonnegative solutions to $-Δu=f(u)$ in unbounded domains when $f(0)<0$

We consider nonnegative solutions to $-Δu=f(u)$ in unbounded euclidean domains, where $f$ is merely locally Lipschitz continuous and satisfies $f(0)<0$. In the half-plane, and without any other assumption on $u$, we prove that $u$ is either one-dimensional and periodic or positive and strictly monotone increasing in the direction orthogonal to the boundary. Analogous results are obtained if the domain is a strip. As a consequence of our main results, we answer affirmatively to a conjecture and to an open question posed by Berestycki, Caffarelli and Nirenberg. We also obtain some symmetry and monotonicity results in the higher-dimensional case.

Radial symmetry and applications for a problem involving the $-Δ_p(\cdot)$ operator and critical nonlinearity in~$\mathbb{R}^N$

We consider weak non-negative solutions to the critical $p$-Laplace equation in $\mathbb{R}^N$, $-Δ_p u =u^{p^*-1}$ in the singular case $1<p<2$. We prove that if the nonlinearity is locally Lipschitz continuous, namely $p^*\geqslant2$ then all the solutions in ${\mathcal D}^{1,p}(\R^N)$ are radial (and radially decreasing) about some point.

Blow up of solutions of semilinear heat equations in general domains

Consider the nonlinear heat equation $v_t -Δv= |v|^{p-1} v$ in a bounded smooth domain $Ω\subset \R^n$ with $n>2$ and Dirichlet boundary condition. Given $u_{p}$ a sign-changing stationary solution fulfilling suitable assumptions, we prove that the solution with initial value $θu_{p} $ blows up in finite time if $ |θ-1|>0$ is sufficiently small and if $p$ is sufficiently close to the critical exponent. Since for $θ=1$ the solution is global, this shows that, in general, the set of the initial data for which the solution is global is not star-shaped. This phenomenon had been previously observed in the case when the domain is a ball and the stationary solution is radially symmetric.

Monotonicity of solutions to quasilinear problems with a first-order term in half-spaces

We consider a quasilinear elliptic equation involving a first order term, under zero Dirichlet boundary condition in half spaces. We prove that any positive solution is monotone increasing w.r.t. the direction orthogonal to the boundary. The main ingredient in the proof is a new comparison principle in unbounded domains. As a consequence of our analysis, we also obtain some new Liouville type theorems.

Monotonicity of solutions of quasilinear degenerate elliptic equation in half-spaces

We prove a weak comparison principle in narrow unbounded domains for solutions to $-Δ_p u=f(u)$ in the case $2<p< 3$ and $f(\cdot)$ is a power-type nonlinearity, or in the case $p>2$ and $f(\cdot)$ is super-linear. We exploit it to prove the monotonicity of positive solutions to $-Δ_p u=f(u)$ in half spaces (with zero Dirichlet assumption) and therefore to prove some Liouville-type theorems.

Solutions of semilinear elliptic equations in tubes

Given a smooth compact k-dimensional manifold Λembedded in $\mathbb {R}^m$, with m\geq 2 and 1\leq k\leq m-1, and given ε>0, we define B_ε(Λ) to be the geodesic tubular neighborhood of radius εabout Λ. In this paper, we construct positive solutions of the semilinear elliptic equation Δu + u^p = 0 in B_ε(Λ) with u = 0 on \partial B_ε(Λ), when the parameter εis chosen small enough. In this equation, the exponent p satisfies either p > 1 when n:=m-k \leq 2 or p\in (1, \frac{n+2}{n-2}) when n>2. In particular p can be critical or supercritical in dimension m\geq 3. As εtends to zero, the solutions we construct have Morse index tending to infinity. Moreover, using a Pohozaev type argument, we prove that our result is sharp in the sense that there are no positive solutions for p>\frac{n+2}{n-2}, n\geq 3, if εis sufficiently small.
