In the present paper, we investigate the regularity and symmetry properties of weak solutions to semilinear elliptic equations which are locally stable.
In this paper we prove the validity of Gibbons' conjecture for the quasilinear elliptic equation $ -Δ_p u = f(u) $ on $\mathbb{R}^N.$ The result holds true for $(2N+2)/(N+2) < p < 2$ and for a very general class of nonlinearity $f$.
In this paper we provide some local and global splitting results on complete Riemannian manifolds with nonnegative Ricci curvature. We achieve the splitting through the analysis of some pointwise inequalities of Modica type which hold true for every bounded solution to a semilinear Poisson equation. More precisely, we prove that the existence of a nonconstant bounded solution $u$ for which one of the previous inequalities becomes an equality at some point leads to the splitting results as well as to a classification of such a solution $u$.
We classify stable and finite Morse index solutions to general semilinear elliptic equations posed in Euclidean space of dimension at most 10, or in some unbounded domains.
We consider here operators which are sum of (possibly) fractional derivatives, with (possibly different) order. The main constructive assumption is that the operator is of order~$2$ in one variable. By constructing an explicit barrier, we prove a Lipschitz estimate which controls the oscillation of the solutions in such direction with respect to the oscillation of the nonlinearity in the same direction. As a consequence, we obtain a rigidity result that, roughly speaking, states that if the nonlinearity is independent of a coordinate direction, then so is any global solution (provided that the solution does not grow too much at infinity). A Liouville type result then follows as a byproduct.
In this paper we study the geometry and the topology of unbounded domains in the Hyperbolic Space $\mathbb{H} ^n$ supporting a bounded positive solution to an overdetermined elliptic problem. Under suitable conditions on the elliptic problem and the behaviour of the bounded solution at infinity, we are able to show that symmetries of the boundary at infinity imply symmetries on the domain itself. In dimension two, we can strengthen our results proving that a connected domain $Ω\subset \mathbb{H} ^2$ with $C^2$ boundary whose complement is connected and supports a bounded positive solution $u$ to an overdetermined problem, assuming natural conditions on the equation and the behaviour at infinity of the solution, must be either a geodesic ball or, a horodisk or, a half-space determined by a complete equidistant curve or, the complement of any of the above example. Moreover, in each case, the solution $u$ is invariant by the isometries fixing $Ω$.
We consider a possibly anisotropic integro-differential semilinear equation, run by a nondecreasing and nontrivial nonlinearity. We prove that if the solution grows at infinity less than the order of the operator, then it must be constant.
We consider weak distributional solutions to the equation $-Δ_pu=f(u)$ in half-spaces under zero Dirichlet boundary condition. We assume that the nonlinearity is positive and superlinear at zero. For $p>2$ (the case $1<p\leq2$ is already known) we prove that any positive solution is strictly monotone increasing in the direction orthogonal to the boundary of the half-space. As a consequence we deduce some Liouville type theorems for the Lane-Emden type equation. Furthermore any nonnegative solution turns out to be $C^{2,α}$ smooth.
We study bounded, monotone solutions of$Δu=W'(u)$ in the whole of$\R^n$, where$W$ is a double-well potential. We prove that under suitable assumptions on the limit interface and on the energy growth, $u$ is $1$D. In particular, differently from the previous literature, the solution is not assumed to have minimal properties and the cases studied lie outside the range of $Γ$-convergence methods. We think that this approach could be fruitful in concrete situations, where one can observe the phase separation at a large scale and whishes to deduce the values of the state parameter in the vicinity of the interface. As a simple example of the results obtained with this point of view, we mention that monotone solutions with energy bounds, whose limit interface does not contain a vertical line through the origin, are $1$D, at least up to dimension 4.
We study existence and stability properties of entire solutions of a polyharmonic equation with an exponential nonlinearity. We study existence of radial entire solutions and we provide some asymptotic estimates on their behavior at infinity. As a first result on stability we prove that stable solutions (not necessarily radial) in dimensions lower than the conformal one never exist. On the other hand, we prove that radial entire solutions which are stable outside a compact always exist both in high and low dimensions. In order to prove stability of solutions outside a compact set we prove some new Hardy-Rellich type inequalities in low dimensions.
We consider the Wulff-type energy functional $$ \mathcal{W}_Ω(u) := \int_ΩB(H(\nabla u (x))) - F(u(x)) \, dx, $$ where $B$ is positive, monotone and convex, and $H$ is positive homogeneous of degree 1. The critical points of this functional satisfy a possibly singular or degenerate, quasilinear equation in an anisotropic medium. We prove that the gradient of the solution is bounded at any point by the potential $F(u)$ and we deduce several rigidity and symmetry properties.
We consider nonnegative solutions to $-Δu=f(u)$ in unbounded euclidean domains, where $f$ is merely locally Lipschitz continuous and satisfies $f(0)<0$. In the half-plane, and without any other assumption on $u$, we prove that $u$ is either one-dimensional and periodic or positive and strictly monotone increasing in the direction orthogonal to the boundary. Analogous results are obtained if the domain is a strip. As a consequence of our main results, we answer affirmatively to a conjecture and to an open question posed by Berestycki, Caffarelli and Nirenberg. We also obtain some symmetry and monotonicity results in the higher-dimensional case.
In this paper we prove some symmetry results for entire solutions to the semilinear equation $-Δu=f(u)$, with $f$ nonincreasing in a right neighbourhood of the origin. We consider solutions decaying only in some directions and we give some sufficient conditions for them to be radially symmetric with respect to those variables, such as periodicity or the pointwise decay of some derivatives.
We study monotonicity and 1-dimensional symmetry for positive solutions with algebraic growth of the following elliptic system: \[ \begin{cases} -Δu = -u v^2 & \text{in $\R^N$}\\ -Δv= -u^2 v & \text{in $\R^N$}, \end{cases} \] for every dimension $N \ge 2$. In particular, we prove a Gibbons-type conjecture proposed by H. Berestycki, T. C. Lin, J. Wei and C. Zhao.
We consider a quasilinear elliptic equation involving a first order term, under zero Dirichlet boundary condition in half spaces. We prove that any positive solution is monotone increasing w.r.t. the direction orthogonal to the boundary. The main ingredient in the proof is a new comparison principle in unbounded domains. As a consequence of our analysis, we also obtain some new Liouville type theorems.
We study the one dimensional symmetry of entire solutions to an elliptic system arising in phase separation for Bose-Einstein condensates with multiple states. We prove that any monotone solution, with arbitrary algebraic growth at infinity, must be one dimensional in the case of two spatial variables. We also prove the one dimensional symmetry for half-monotone solutions, i.e., for solutions having only one monotone component.
We prove the symmetry of components and some Liouville-type theorems for, possibly sign changing, entire distributional solutions to a family of nonlinear elliptic systems encompassing models arising in Bose-Einstein condensation and in nonlinear optics. For these models we also provide precise classification results for non-negative solutions. The sharpness of our results is also discussed.
We prove the one-dimensional symmetry of solutions to elliptic equations of the form $-\dive(e^{G(x)}a(|\nabla u|)\nabla u)=f(u) e^{G(x)}$, under suitable energy conditions. Our results hold without any restriction on the dimension of the ambient space.
We prove a weak comparison principle in narrow unbounded domains for solutions to $-Δ_p u=f(u)$ in the case $2<p< 3$ and $f(\cdot)$ is a power-type nonlinearity, or in the case $p>2$ and $f(\cdot)$ is super-linear. We exploit it to prove the monotonicity of positive solutions to $-Δ_p u=f(u)$ in half spaces (with zero Dirichlet assumption) and therefore to prove some Liouville-type theorems.
In this short note, we study the smoothness of the extremal solutions to the Liouville system
Our work proposes a unified approach to three different topics in a general Riemannian setting: splitting theorems, symmetry results and overdetermined elliptic problems. By the existence of a stable solution to the semilinear equation $-Δu = f(u)$ on a Riemannian manifold with non-negative Ricci curvature, we are able to classify both the solution and the manifold. We also discuss the classification of monotone (with respect to the direction of some Killing vector field) solutions, in the spirit of a conjecture of De Giorgi, and the rigidity features for overdetermined elliptic problems on submanifolds with boundary.
