Linear Response Theory and Optical Conductivity of Floquet Topological Insulators

Motivated by the quest for experimentally accessible dynamical probes of Floquet topological insulators, we formulate the linear response theory of a periodically driven system. We illustrate the applications of this formalism by giving general expressions for optical conductivity of Floquet systems, including its homodyne and heterodyne components and beyond. We obtain the Floquet optical conductivity of specific driven models, including two-dimensional Dirac material such as the surface of a topological insulator, graphene, and the Haldane model irradiated with circularly or linearly polarized laser, as well as semiconductor quantum well driven by an ac potential. We obtain approximate analytical expressions and perform numerically exact calculations of the Floquet optical conductivity in different scenarios of the occupation of the Floquet bands, in particular, the diagonal Floquet distribution and the distribution obtained after a quench. We comment on experimental signatures and detection of Floquet topological phases using optical probes.

Enhanced weak ferromagnetism and conductivity in hole-doped pyrochlore iridate Y2Ir2O7

Pyrochlore iridates have recently attracted growing interest in condensed matter physics because of their potential for realizing new topological states. In order to achieve such quantum states, it is essential to understand themagnetic properties of these compounds, as their electronic structures are strongly coupled with theirmagnetic ground states. In this work, we report a systematic study of the magnetic properties of pyrochlore Y2Ir2O7 and its hole-doped compounds by performing magnetic, electron spin resonance, electrical transport, and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) measurements. We demonstrate the existence of weak ferromagnetism on top of a large antiferromagnetic background in the undoped compound. Hole doping by calcium was found to enhance both the ferromagnetism and the electrical conductivity. The XPS characterization shows the coexistence of Ir4+ and Ir5+ in the undoped compound, and the amount of Ir5+ increases with Ca doping, which highlights the possible origins of the weak ferromagnetism associated with the formation of Ir5+.We also observe a vertical shift in the M-H curves after field cooling, which may arise from a strong coupling between the ferromagnetic phase and the antiferromagnetic background.

Anyons in a weakly interacting system

We describe a theoretical proposal for a system whose excitations are anyons with the exchange phase pi/4 and charge -e/2, but, remarkably, can be built by filling a set of single-particle states of essentially noninteracting electrons. The system consists of an artificially structured type-II superconducting film adjacent to a 2D electron gas in the integer quantum Hall regime with unit filling fraction. The proposal rests on the observation that a vacancy in an otherwise periodic vortex lattice in the superconductor creates a bound state in the 2DEG with total charge -e/2. A composite of this fractionally charged hole and the missing flux due to the vacancy behaves as an anyon. The proposed setup allows for manipulation of these anyons and could prove useful in various schemes for fault-tolerant topological quantum computation.

Fractionalization in a square-lattice model with time-reversal symmetry

We propose a two-dimensional time-reversal invariant system of essentially non-interacting electrons on a square lattice that exhibits configurations with fractional charges e/2. These are vortex-like topological defects in the dimerization order parameter describing spatial modulation in the electron hopping amplitudes. Charge fractionalization is established by a simple counting argument, analytical calculation within the effective low-energy theory, and by an exact numerical diagonalization of the lattice Hamiltonian. We comment on the exchange statistics of fractional charges and possible realizations of the system.
