Chirped Elliptic Waves: Coupled Helmholtz Equations

Exact chirped elliptic wave solutions are obtained within the framework of coupled cubic nonlinear Helmholtz equations in the presence of non-Kerr nonlinearity like self steepening and self frequency shift. It is shown that, for a particular combination of the self steepening and the self frequency shift parameters, the associated nontrivial phase gives rise to chirp reversal across the solitary wave profile. But a different combination of non-Kerr terms leads to chirping but no chirp reversal. The effect of nonparaxial parameter on physical quantities such as intensity, speed and pulse-width of the elliptic waves is studied too. It is found that the speed of the solitary wave can be tuned by altering the nonparaxial parameter. Stable propagation of these nonparaxial elliptic waves is achieved by an appropriate choice of parameters.

Kink Solutions With Power Law Tails

We present a comprehensive review about the various facets of kink solutions with a power law tail which have received considerable attention during the last few years. This area of research is in its early stages and while several aspects have become clear by now, there are a number of issues which have only been partially understood or not understood at all. We first discuss the aspects which are reasonably well known and then address in some detail the issues which are only partially or not understood at all. We present a wide class of higher (than sixth) order field theory models admitting implicit kink as well as mirror kink solutions where the two tails facing each other have a power law or a power-tower type fall off while the other two ends not facing each other could have either an exponential or a power law tail. The models admitting implicit kink solutions where the two ends facing each other have an exponential tail while the other two ends have a power law tail are also discussed. Moreover, we present several field theory models which admit explicit kink solutions with a power law fall off. We note that in all the polynomial models while the potential $V(ϕ)$ is continuous, its derivative is discontinuous. We also discuss one of the most important and only partially understood issues of the kink-kink and the kink-antikink forces in case the tails facing each other have a power law fall off. Finally, we briefly discuss the kink-antikink collisions at finite velocity and present some open questions.

Stability of exact solutions of the $(2+1)$-dimensional nonlinear Schrödinger equation with arbitrary nonlinearity parameter $κ$

In this work, we consider the nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLSE) in $2+1$ dimensions with arbitrary nonlinearity exponent $κ$ in the presence of an external confining potential. Exact solutions to the system are constructed, and their stability over their "mass" (i.e., the $L^2$ norm) and the parameter $κ$ is explored. We observe both theoretically and numerically that the presence of the confining potential leads to wider domains of stability over the parameter space compared to the unconfined case. Our analysis suggests the existence of a stable regime of solutions for all $κ$ as long as their mass is less than a critical value $M^{\ast}(κ)$. Furthermore, we find that there are two different critical masses, one corresponding to width perturbations and the other one to translational perturbations. The results of Derrick's theorem are also obtained by studying the small amplitude regime of a four-parameter collective coordinate (4CC) approximation. A numerical stability analysis of the NLSE shows that the instability curve $M^{\ast}(κ)$ vs. $κ$ lies below the two curves found by Derrick's theorem and the 4CC approximation. In the absence of the external potential, $κ=1$ demarcates the separation between the blowup regime and the stable regime. In this 4CC approximation, for $κ<1$, when the mass is above the critical mass for the translational instability, quite complicated motions of the collective coordinates are possible. Energy conservation prevents the blowup of the solution as well as confines the center of the solution to a finite spatial domain. We call this regime the "frustrated" blowup regime and give some illustrations. In an appendix, we show how to extend these results to arbitrary initial ground state solution data and arbitrary spatial dimension $d$.

Superposed Hyperbolic Kink and Pulse Solutions of Coupled $ϕ^4$, NLS and MKdV Equations

We obtain novel solutions of a coupled $ϕ^4$, a coupled nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) and a coupled modified Korteweg de Vries (MKdV) model which can be re-expressed as a linear superposition of either the sum or the difference of two hyperbolic kink or two hyperbolic pulse solutions. These results demonstrate that the notion of superposed solutions extends to coupled nonlinear equations as well.

Supersymmetry and Shape Invariance of exceptional orthogonal polynomials

We discuss the exceptional Laguerre and the exceptional Jacobi orthogonal polynomials in the framework of the supersymmetric quantum mechanics (SUSYQM). We express the differential equations for the Jacobi and the Laguerre exceptional orthogonal polynomials (EOP) as the eigenvalue equations and make an analogy with the time independent Schrödinger equation to define "Hamiltonians" enables us to study the EOPs in the framework of the SUSYQM and to realize the underlying shape invariance associated with such systems. We show that the underlying shape invariance symmetry is responsible for the solubility of the differential equations associated with these polynomials.

Explicit Kink Solutions in Several One-Parameter Family of Higher Order Field Theory Models

We present several one-parameter family of higher order field theory models some of which admit explicit kink solutions with an exponential tail while others admit explicit kink solutions with a power-law tail. Various properties of these families of kink solutions are examined in detail. In particular for models harboring kink solutions with a power-law tail, we show that there is no gap between the zero mode and the beginning of the continuum in the kink stability potential. Further, by applying the recent Manton formalism, we provide estimates for the kink-kink and antikink-kink acceleration and hence the ratio of the corresponding antikink-kink and kink-kink forces.

Novel Deformation Function Creating or Destroying any Number of Even Kink Solutions

We present a one-parameter family of deformation functions $f(ϕ)$ which have novel properties. Firstly, the deformation function is its own inverse. We show that a class of potentials remains invariant under this deformation. Further, when applied to a certain class of kink bearing potentials, one obtains potentials which are not bounded from below. Besides, we show that there is a wide class of potentials having power law kink tails which are connected by this deformation but the corresponding kink tails of the two potentials have different asymptotic behavior. Finally, we show that when this deformation function is applied to an appropriate one-parameter family of potentials having two kink solutions, it creates new potentials with an arbitrary even number ($2n$) of kink solutions. Conversely, by starting from this potential with $2n$ kink solutions the deformation function annihilates $2n-2$ kinks and we get back the potential which we started with having only two kink solutions.

A pedestrian introduction to coherent and squeezed states

This review is intended for readers who want to have a quick understanding on the theoretical underpinnings of coherent states and squeezed states which are conventionally generated from the prototype harmonic oscillator but not always restricting to it. Noting that the treatments of building up such states have a long history, we collected the important ingredients and reproduced them from a fresh perspective but refrained from delving into detailed derivation of each topic. By no means we claim a comprehensive presentation of the subject but have only tried to re-capture some of the essential results and pointed out their inter-connectivity.

Modulational instability, inter-component asymmetry and formation of quantum droplets in one-dimensional binary Bose gases

Quantum droplets are ultradilute liquid states which emerge from the competitive interplay of two Hamiltonian terms, the mean-field energy and beyond-mean-field correction, in a weakly interacting binary Bose gas. We relate the formation of droplets in symmetric and asymmetric two-component one-dimensional boson systems to the modulational instability of a spatially uniform state driven by the beyond-mean-field term. Asymmetry between the components may be caused by their unequal populations or unequal intra-component interaction strengths. Stability of both symmetric and asymmetric droplets is investigated. Robustness of the symmetric solutions against symmetry-breaking perturbations is confirmed.

One parameter family of rationally extended isospectral potentials

We start from a given one dimensional rationally extended potential associated with $X_m$ exceptional orthogonal polynomials and using the idea of supersymmetry in quantum mechanics, we obtain one continuous parameter ($λ$) family of rationally extended strictly isospectral potentials whose solutions are also associated with Xm exceptional orthogonal polynomials. We illustrate this construction by considering three well known rationally extended potentials, two with pure discrete spectrum (the extended radial oscillator and the extended Scarf-I) and one with both the discrete and the continuous spectrum (the extended generalized Poschl-Teller) and explicitly construct the corresponding one continuous parameter family of rationally extended strictly isospectral potentials. Further, in the special case of $λ= 0$ and $-1$, we obtain two new exactly solvable rationally extended potentials, namely the rationally extended Pursey and the rationally extended Abhrahm-Moses potentials respectively. We illustrate the whole procedure by discussing in detail the particular case of the $X_1$ rationally extended one parameter family of potentials including the corresponding Pursey and the Abraham Moses potentials.

Logarithmic Potential with Super-Super-Exponential Kink Profiles and Tails

We consider a novel one dimensional model of a logarithmic potential which has super-super-exponential kink profiles as well as kink tails. We provide analytic kink solutions of the model -- it has 3 kinks, 3 mirror kinks and the corresponding antikinks. While some of the kink tails are super-super-exponential, some others are super-exponential whereas the remaining ones are exponential. The linear stability analysis reveals that there is a gap between the zero mode and the onset of continuum. Finally, we compare this potential and its kink solutions with those of very high order field theories harboring seven degenerate minima and their attendant kink solutions, specifically $ϕ^{14}$, $ϕ^{16}$ and $ϕ^{18}$.

Parametrically driven nonlinear Dirac equation with arbitrary nonlinearity

The damped and parametrically driven nonlinear Dirac equation with arbitrary nonlinearity parameter $κ$ is analyzed, when the external force is periodic in space and given by $f(x) =r\cos(K x)$, both numerically and in a variational approximation using five collective coordinates (time dependent shape parameters of the wave function). Our variational approximation satisfies exactly the low-order moment equations. Because of competition between the spatial period of the external force $λ=2 π/K$, and the soliton width $l_s$, which is a function of the nonlinearity $κ$ as well as the initial frequency $ω_0$ of the solitary wave, there is a transition (at fixed $ω_0$) from trapped to unbound behavior of the soliton, which depends on the parameters $r$ and $K$ of the external force and the nonlinearity parameter $κ$. We previously studied this phenomena when $κ=1$ (2019 J. Phys. A: Math. Theor. {\bf 52} 285201) where we showed that for $λ\gg l_s$ the soliton oscillates in an effective potential, while for $λ\ll l_s$ it moves uniformly as a free particle. In this paper we focus on the $κ$ dependence of the transition from oscillatory to particle behavior and explicitly compare the curves of the transition regime found in the collective coordinate approximation as a function of $r$ and $K$ when $κ=1/2,1,2$ at fixed value of the frequency $ω_0$. Since the solitary wave gets narrower for fixed $ω_0$ as a function of $κ$, we expect and indeed find that the regime where the solitary wave is trapped is extended as we increase $κ$.

Wide Class of Logarithmic Potentials with Power-Tower Kink Tails

We present a wide class of potentials which admit kinks and corresponding mirror kinks with either a power law or an exponential tail at the two extreme ends and a power-tower form of tails at the two neighbouring ends, i.e. of the forms $ette$ or $pttp$ where $e, p$ and $t$ denote exponential, power law and power-tower tail, respectively. We analyze kink stability equation in all these cases and show that there is no gap between the zero mode and the beginning of the continuum. Finally, we provide a recipe for obtaining logarithmic potentials with power-tower kink tails and estimate kink-kink interaction strength.

Connections Between Complex PT-Invariant Solutions and Complex Periodic Solutions of Several Nonlinear Equations

We point out novel connections between complex PT-invariant solutions of several nonlinear equations such as $ϕ^4$, $ϕ^6$, sine-Gordon, hyperbolic sine-Gordon, double sine-Gordon, double hyperbolic sine-Gordon, mKdV, etc. We then use these connections to obtain several new complex PT-invariant periodic solutions of some of these equations.

Novel PT-invariant Kink and Pulse Solutions For a Large Number of Real Nonlinear Equations

For a large number of real nonlinear equations, either continuous or discrete, integrable or nonintegrable, uncoupled or coupled, we show that whenever a real nonlinear equation admits kink solutions in terms of $\tanh βx$, where $β$ is the inverse of the kink width, it also admits solutions in terms of the PT-invariant combinations $\tanh 2βx \pm i \sech 2 βx$, i.e. the kink width is reduced by half to that of the real kink solution. We show that both the kink and the PT-invariant kink are linearly stable and obtain expressions for the zero mode in the case of several PT-invariant kink solutions. Further, for a number of real nonlinear equations we show that whenever a nonlinear equation admits periodic kink solutions in terms of $\sn(x,m)$, it also admits periodic solutions in terms of the PT-invariant combinations $\sn(x,m) \pm i \cn(x,m)$ as well as $\sn(x,m)\pm i \dn(x,m)$. Finally, for coupled equations we show that one cannot only have complex PT-invariant solutions with PT eigenvalue $+1$ or $-1$ in both the fields but one can also have solutions with PT eigenvalue $+1$ in one field and $-1$ in the other field.

Stability of exact solutions of the nonlinear Schroedinger equation in an external potential having supersymmetry and parity-time symmetry

We discuss the stability properties of the solutions of the general nonlinear Schroedinger equation (NLSE) in 1+1 dimensions in an external potential derivable from a parity-time (PT) symmetric superpotential $W(x)$ that we considered earlier [Kevrekedis et al Phys. Rev. E 92, 042901 (2015)]. In particular we consider the nonlinear partial differential equation $\{ i \partial_t + \partial_x^2 - V^{-}(x) +| ψ(x,t) |^{2κ} \} \, ψ(x,t) = 0$, for arbitrary nonlinearity parameter $κ$. We study the bound state solutions when $V^{-}(x) = (1/4- b^2)$ sech$^2(x)$, which can be derived from two different superpotentials $W(x)$, one of which is complex and $PT$ symmetric. Using Derrick's theorem, as well as a time dependent variational approximation, we derive exact analytic results for the domain of stability of the trapped solution as a function of the depth $b^2$ of the external potential. We compare the regime of stability found from these analytic approaches with a numerical linear stability analysis using a variant of the Vakhitov-Kolokolov (V-K) stability criterion. The numerical results of applying the V-K condition give the same answer for the domain of stability as the analytic result obtained from applying Derrick's theorem. Our main result is that for $κ>2$ a new regime of stability for the exact solutions appears as long as $b > b_{crit}$, where $b_{crit}$ is a function of the nonlinearity parameter $κ$. In the absence of the potential the related solitary wave solutions of the NLSE are unstable for $κ>2$.

Variational Approach to studying solitary waves in the nonlinear Schrodinger equation with Complex Potentials

We discuss the behavior of solitary wave solutions of the nonlinear Schr{ö}dinger equation (NLSE) as they interact with complex potentials, using a four parameter variational approximation based on a dissipation functional formulation of the dynamics. We concentrate on spatially periodic potentials with the periods of the real and imaginary part being either the same or different. Our results for the time evolution of the collective coordinates of our variational ansatz are in good agreement with direct numerical simulation of the NLSE. We compare our method with a collective coordinate approach of Kominis and give examples where the two methods give qualitatively different answers. In our variational approach, we are able to give analytic results for the small oscillation frequency of the solitary wave oscillating parameters which agree with the numerical solution of the collective coordinate equations. We also verify that instabilities set in when the slope of $dp(t)/dv(t)$ becomes negative when plotted parametrically as a function of time, where $p(t)$ is the momentum of the solitary wave and $v(t)$ the velocity.

Group theoretic approach to rationally extended shape invariant potentials

The exact bound state spectrum of rationally extended shape invariant real as well as $PT$ symmetric complex potentials are obtained by using potential group approach. The generators of the potential groups are modified by introducing a new operator $U (x, J_3 \pm 1/2 )$ to express the Hamiltonian corresponding to these extended potentials in terms of Casimir operators. Connection between the potential algebra and the shape invariance is elucidated.

Nonlinear Dirac equation solitary waves in the presence of external driving forces

We consider the nonlinear Dirac (NLD) equation in 1+1 dimension with scalar-scalar self-interaction in the presence of external forces as well as damping of the form $ f(x,t) - i μγ^0 Ψ$, where both $f$ and $Ψ$ are two-component spinors. We develop an approximate variational approach using collective coordinates (CC) for studying the time dependent response of the solitary waves to these external forces. This approach predicts intrinsic oscillations of the solitary waves, i.e. the amplitude, width and phase all oscillate with the same frequency. The translational motion is also affected, because the soliton position oscillates around a mean trajectory. We then compare the results of the variational approximation with numerical simulations of the NLD equation, and find a good agreement, if we take into account a certain linear excitation with specific wavenumber that is excited together with the intrinsic oscillations such that the momentum in a transformed NLD equation is conserved. We also solve explicitly the CC equations of the variational approximation in the non-relativistic regime for a homogeneous external force and obtain excellent agreement with the numerical solution of the CC equations.

Nonparaxial elliptic waves and solitary waves in coupled nonlinear Helmholtz equations

We obtain a class of elliptic wave solutions of coupled nonlinear Helmholtz (CNLH) equations describing nonparaxial ultra-broad beam propagation in nonlinear Kerr-like media, in terms of the Jacobi elliptic functions and also discuss their limiting forms (hyperbolic solutions). Especially, we show the existence of non-trivial solitary wave profiles in the CNLH system. The effect of nonparaxiality on the speed, pulse width and amplitude of the nonlinear waves is analysed in detail. Particularly a mechanism for tuning the speed by altering the nonparaxial parameter is proposed. We also identify a novel phase-unlocking behaviour due to the presence of nonparaxial parameter.

Novel PT-invariant Solutions For a Large Number of Real Nonlinear Equations

For a large number of real nonlinear equations, either continuous or discrete, integrable or nonintegrable, we show that whenever a real nonlinear equation admits a solution in terms of $\sech x$, it also admits solutions in terms of the PT-invariant combinations $\sech x \pm i \tanh x$. Further, for a number of real nonlinear equations we show that whenever a nonlinear equation admits a solution in terms $\sech^2 x$, it also admits solutions in terms of the PT-invariant combinations $\sech^2 x \pm i \sech x \tanh x$. Besides, we show that similar results are also true in the periodic case involving Jacobi elliptic functions.

Reply to the Comment by Zhang and Li [J. Math. Phys. 56, 084101, 2015] on the Paper [J. Math. Phys. {\bf 56}, 032104, 2015]}

In a recent paper Zhang and Li have doubted our claim that whenever a nonlinear equation has solutions in terms of the Jacobi elliptic functions $\cn(x,m)$ and $\dn(x,m)$, then the same nonlinear equation will necessarily also have solutions in terms of $\dn(x,m) \pm \sqrt{m} \cn(x,m)$. We point out the flaw in their argument and show why our assertion is indeed valid.

Solitary waves of a PT-symmetric Nonlinear Dirac equation

In the present work, we consider a prototypical example of a PT-symmetric Dirac model. We discuss the underlying linear limit of the model and identify the threshold of the PT-phase transition in an analytical form. We then focus on the examination of the nonlinear model. We consider the continuation in the PT-symmetric model of the solutions of the corresponding Hamiltonian model and find that the solutions can be continued robustly as stable ones all the way up to the PT-transition threshold. In the latter, they degenerate into linear waves. We also examine the dynamics of the model. Given the stability of the waveforms in the PT-exact phase we consider them as initial conditions for parameters outside of that phase. We find that both oscillatory dynamics and exponential growth may arise, depending on the size of the corresponding "quench". The former can be characterized by an interesting form of bi-frequency solutions that have been predicted on the basis of the SU(1,1) symmetry. Finally, we explore some special, analytically tractable, but not PT-symmetric solutions in the massless limit of the model.

Periodic and Hyperbolic Soliton Solutions of a Number of Nonlocal PT-Symmetric Nonlinear Equations

For a number of nonlocal nonlinear equations such as nonlocal, nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLSE), nonlocal Ablowitz-Ladik (AL), nonlocal, saturable discrete NLSE (DNLSE), coupled nonlocal NLSE, coupled nonlocal AL and coupled nonlocal, saturable DNLSE, we obtain periodic solutions in terms of Jacobi elliptic functions as well as the corresponding hyperbolic soliton solutions. Remarkably, in all the six cases, we find that unlike the corresponding local cases, all the nonlocal models simultaneously admit both the bright and the dark soliton solutions. Further, in all the six cases, not only $\dn(x,m)$ and $\cn(x,m)$ but even their linear superposition is shown to be an exact solution. Finally, we show that the coupled nonlocal NLSE not only admits solutions in terms of Lamé polynomials of order 1, but it also admits solutions in terms of Lamé polynomials of order 2, even though they are not the solutions of the uncoupled nonlocal problem. We also remark on the possible integrability in certain cases.

Stability of solitary waves in the nonlinear Dirac equation with arbitrary nonlinearity

We consider the nonlinear Dirac equation in 1+1 dimension with scalar-scalar self interaction $ \frac{g^2}{κ+1} ({\bar Ψ} Ψ)^{κ+1}$ and with mass $m$. Using the exact analytic form for rest frame solitary waves of the form $Ψ(x,t) = ψ(x) e^{-i ωt}$ for arbitrary $ κ$, we discuss the validity of various approaches to understanding stability that were successful for the nonlinear Schrödinger equation. In particular we study the validity of a version of Derrick's theorem, the criterion of Bogolubsky as well as the Vakhitov-Kolokolov criterion, and find that these criteria yield inconsistent results. Therefore, we study the stability by numerical simulations using a recently developed 4th-order operator splitting integration method. For different ranges of $κ$ we map out the stability regimes in $ω$. We find that all stable nonlinear Dirac solitary waves have a one-hump profile, but not all one-hump waves are stable, while all waves with two humps are unstable. We also find that the time $t_c$, it takes for the instability to set in, is an exponentially increasing function of $ω$ and $t_c$ decreases monotonically with increasing $κ$.

Successive phase transitions and kink solutions in $ϕ^{8}$, $ϕ^{10}$, and $ϕ^{12}$ field theories

We obtain exact solutions for kinks in $ϕ^{8}$, $ϕ^{10}$ and $ϕ^{12}$ field theories with degenerate minima, which can describe a second-order phase transition followed by a first-order one, a succession of two first-order phase transitions and a second-order phase transition followed by two first-order phase transitions, respectively. Such phase transitions are known to occur in ferroelastic and ferroelectric crystals and in meson physics. In particular, we find that the higher-order field theories have kink solutions with algebraically-decaying tails and also asymmetric cases with mixed exponential-algebraic tail decay, unlike the lower-order $ϕ^4$ and $ϕ^6$ theories. Additionally, we construct distinct kinks with equal energies in all three field theories considered, and we show the co-existence of up to three distinct kinks (for a $ϕ^{12}$ potential with six degenerate minima). We also summarize phonon dispersion relations for these systems, showing that the higher-order field theories have specific cases in which only nonlinear phonons are allowed. For the $ϕ^{10}$ field theory, which is a quasi-exactly solvable (QES) model akin to $ϕ^6$, we are also able to obtain three analytical solutions for the classical free energy as well as the probability distribution function in the thermodynamic limit.

Superposition of Elliptic Functions as Solutions For a Large Number of Nonlinear Equations

For a large number of nonlinear equations, both discrete and continuum, we demonstrate a kind of linear superposition. We show that whenever a nonlinear equation admits solutions in terms of both Jacobi elliptic functions $\cn(x,m)$ and $\dn(x,m)$ with modulus $m$, then it also admits solutions in terms of their sum as well as difference. We have checked this in the case of several nonlinear equations such as the nonlinear Schrödinger equation, MKdV, a mixed KdV-MKdV system, a mixed quadratic-cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation, the Ablowitz-Ladik equation, the saturable nonlinear Schrödinger equation, $λϕ^4$, the discrete MKdV as well as for several coupled field equations. Further, for a large number of nonlinear equations, we show that whenever a nonlinear equation admits a periodic solution in terms of $\dn^2(x,m)$, it also admits solutions in terms of $\dn^2(x,m) \pm \sqrt{m} \cn(x,m) \dn(x,m)$, even though $\cn(x,m) \dn(x,m)$ is not a solution of these nonlinear equations. Finally, we also obtain superposed solutions of various forms for several coupled nonlinear equations.

Nonlinear Dirac equation solitary waves in external fields

We consider the nonlinear Dirac equations (NLDE's) in 1+1 dimension with scalar-scalar self interaction $\frac{g^2}{κ+1} ({\bPsi} Ψ)^{κ+1}$ in the presence of various external electromagnetic fields. Starting from the exact solutions for the unforced problem we study the behavior of solitary wave solutions to the NLDE in the presence of a wide variety of fields in a variational approximation depending on collective coordinates which allows the position, width and phase of these waves to vary in time. We find that in this approximation the position $q(t)$ of the center of the solitary wave obeys the usual behavior of a relativistic point particle in an external field. For time independent external fields we find that the energy of the solitary wave is conserved but not the momentum which becomes a function of time. We postulate that similar to the nonlinear Schr{ö}dinger equation (NLSE) that a sufficient dynamical condition for instability to arise is that $ dP(t)/d \dq(t) < 0$. Here $P(t)$ is the momentum of the solitary wave, and $\dq$ is the velocity of the center of the wave in the collective coordinate approximation. We found for our choices of external potentials we always have $ dP(t)/d \dq(t) > 0$ so when instabilities do occur they are due to a different source. We investigate the accuracy of our variational approximation using numerical simulations of the NLDE and find that when the forcing term is small and we are in a regime where the solitary wave is stable, that the behavior of the solutions of the collective coordinate equations agrees very well with the numerical simulations.

Novel symmetries in N = 2 supersymmetric quantum mechanical models

We demonstrate the existence of a novel set of discrete symmetries in the context of N = 2 supersymmetric (SUSY) quantum mechanical model with a potential function f(x) that is a generalization of the potential of the 1D SUSY harmonic oscillator. We perform the same exercise for the motion of a charged particle in the X-Y plane under the influence of a magnetic field in the Z-direction. We derive the underlying algebra of the existing continuous symmetry transformations (and corresponding conserved charges) and establish its relevance to the algebraic structures of the de Rham cohomological operators of differential geometry. We show that the discrete symmetry transformations of our present general theories correspond to the Hodge duality operation. Ultimately, we conjecture that any arbitrary N = 2 SUSY quantum mechanical system can be shown to be a tractable model for the Hodge theory.

Statistical Mechanics of a Discrete Schrödinger Equation with Saturable Nonlinearity

We study the statistical mechanics of the one-dimensional discrete nonlinear Schrödinger (DNLS) equation with saturable nonlinearity. Our study represents an extension of earlier work [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 84}, 3740 (2000)] regarding the statistical mechanics of the one-dimensional DNLS equation with a cubic nonlinearity. As in this earlier study we identify the spontaneous creation of localized excitations with a discontinuity in the partition function. The fact that this phenomenon is retained in the saturable DNLS is non-trivial, since in contrast to the cubic DNLS whose nonlinear character is enhanced as the excitation amplitude increases, the saturable DNLS in fact becomes increasingly linear as the excitation amplitude increases. We explore the nonlinear dynamics of this phenomenon by direct numerical simulations.

The scattering amplitude for these rationally ex- tended potentials is calculated analytically for the generalized mth (m = 1, 2, 3, ...) case by considering the asymptotic behavior of the scattering state wave functions which are written in terms of some new polynomials related to the Jacobi polyno- mials. As expected, in the m = 0 limit, this scattering amplitude goes over to the scattering amplitude for the conventional Eckart potential.

Forced Nonlinear Schroedinger Equation with Arbitrary Nonlinearity

We consider the nonlinear Schr{ö}dinger equation (NLSE) in 1+1 dimension with scalar-scalar self interaction $\frac{g^2}{κ+1} (ψ^\star ψ)^{κ+1}$ in the presence of the external forcing terms of the form $r e^{-i(kx + θ)} -δψ$. We find new exact solutions for this problem and show that the solitary wave momentum is conserved in a moving frame where $v_k=2 k$. These new exact solutions reduce to the constant phase solutions of the unforced problem when $r \rightarrow 0.$ In particular we study the behavior of solitary wave solutions in the presence of these external forces in a variational approximation which allows the position, momentum, width and phase of these waves to vary in time. We show that the stationary solutions of the variational equations include a solution close to the exact one and we study small oscillations around all the stationary solutions. We postulate that the dynamical condition for instability is that $ dp(t)/d \dot{q} (t) < 0$, where $p(t)$ is the normalized canonical momentum $p(t) = \frac{1}{M(t)} \frac {\partial L}{\partial {\dot q}}$, and $\dot{q}(t)$ is the solitary wave velocity. Here $M(t) = \int dx ψ^\star(x,t) ψ(x,t)$. Stability is also studied using a "phase portrait" of the soliton, where its dynamics is represented by two-dimensional projections of its trajectory in the four-dimensional space of collective coordinates. The criterion for stability of a soliton is that its trajectory is a closed single curve with a positive sense of rotation around a fixed point. We investigate the accuracy of our variational approximation and these criteria using numerical simulations of the NLSE.

Mapping Between Generalized Nonlinear Schroedinger Equations and Neutral Scalar Field Theories and New Solutions of the Cubic-Quintic NLS Equation

We highlight an interesting mapping between the moving breather solutions of the generalized Nonlinear Schrodinger (NLS) equations and the static solutions of neutral scalar field theories. Using this connection, we then obtain several new moving breather solutions of the cubic-quintic NLS equation both with and without uniform phase in space. The stability of some stationary solutions is investigated numerically and the results confirmed via dynamical evolution.

New QES Hermitian as well as non-Hermitian PT invariant Potentials

We start with quasi-exactly solvable (QES) Hermitian (and hence real) as well as complex PT-invariant, double sinh-Gordon potential and show that even after adding perturbation terms, the resulting potentials, in both cases, are still QES potentials. Further, by using anti-isospectral transformations, we obtain Hermitian as well as PT-invariant complex QES periodic potentials. We study in detail the various properties of the corresponding Bender-Dunne polynomials.

Solutions of Several Coupled Discrete Models in terms of Lame Polynomials of Arbitrary Order

Coupled discrete models abound in several areas of physics. Here we provide an extensive set of exact quasiperiodic solutions of a number of coupled discrete models in terms of Lamé polynomials of arbitrary order. The models discussed are (i) coupled Salerno model, (ii) coupled Ablowitz-Ladik model, (iii) coupled $ϕ^4$ model, and (iv) coupled $ϕ^6$ model. In all these cases we show that the coefficients of the Lamé polynomials are such that the Lamé polynomials can be reexpressed in terms of Chebyshev polynomials of the relevant Jacobi elliptic function.

Furthermore, we show that most of these coupled models in fact also possess an even broader class of exact solutions.

Exact Solutions of the Two-Dimensional Discrete Nonlinear Schrödinger Equation with Saturable Nonlinearity

We show that the two-dimensional, nonlinear Schrödinger lattice with a saturable nonlinearity admits periodic and pulse-like exact solutions. We establish the general formalism for the stability considerations of these solutions and give examples of stability diagrams. Finally, we show that the effective Peierls-Nabarro barrier for the pulse-like soliton solution is zero.

Solitary wave in the Nonlinear Dirac Equation with arbitrary nonlinearity

We consider the nonlinear Dirac equations (NLDE's) in 1+1 dimension with scalar-scalar self interaction $\frac{g^2}{k+1} ({\bar Ψ} Ψ)^{k+1}$, as well as a vector-vector self interaction $\frac{g^2}{k+1} ({\bar Ψ} γ_μΨ\bPsi γ^μΨ)^{\frac{1}{2}(k+1)}$. We find the exact analytic form for solitary waves for arbitrary $k$ and find that they are a generalization of the exact solutions for the nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLSE) and reduce to these solutions in a well defined nonrelativistic limit. We perform the nonrelativistic reduction and find the $1/2m$ correction to the NLSE, valid when $|ω-m |\ll 2m$, where $ω$ is the frequency of the solitary wave in the rest frame. We discuss the stability and blowup of solitary waves assuming the modified NLSE is valid and find that they should be stable for $k < 2$.

Staggered and short period solutions of the Saturable Discrete Nonlinear Schrödinger Equation

We point out that the nonlinear Schr{ö}dinger lattice with a saturable nonlinearity also admits staggered periodic as well as localized pulse-like solutions. Further, the same model also admits solutions with a short period. We examine the stability of these solutions and find that the staggered as well as the short period solutions are stable in most cases. We also show that the effective Peierls-Nabarro barrier for the pulse-like soliton solutions is zero.

Compactons in PT-symmetric generalized Korteweg-de Vries Equations

In an earlier paper Cooper, Shepard, and Sodano introduced a generalized KdV equation that can exhibit the kinds of compacton solitary waves that were first seen in equations studied by Rosenau and Hyman. This paper considers the PT-symmetric extensions of the equations examined by Cooper, Shepard, and Sodano. From the scaling properties of the PT-symmetric equations a general theorem relating the energy, momentum, and velocity of any solitary-wave solution of the generalized KdV equation is derived, and it is shown that the velocity of the solitons is determined by their amplitude, width, and momentum.

Suppression of quantum tunneling for all spins for easy-axis systems

The semi-classical limit of quantum spin systems corresponds to a dynamical Lagrangian which contains the usual kinetic energy, the couplings and interactions of the spins and an additional, first order kinematical term which corresponds to the Wess-Zumino-Novikov-Witten (WZNW) term for the spin degree of freedom \cite{og}. It was shown that in the case of the kinetic dynamics determined only by the WZNW term, half odd integer spin systems show a lack of tunneling phenomena whereas integer spin systems are subject to it \cite{l} in the case of potentials with easy-plane easy-axis symmetry. Here we prove, for the theory with a normal quadratic kinetic term of arbitrary strength or the first order theory with azimuthal symmetry (which is equivalently the so-called easy-axis situation), that the tunneling is in fact suppressed for all non-zero values of spin. This model exemplifies the concept that in the presence of complex Euclidean action, it is necessary to use the ensuing complex critical points in order to define the quantum (perturbation) theory \cite{ampr}. In the present example, if we do not do so, exactly the opposite, erroneous conclusion, that the tunneling is unsuppressed for all spins, is reached.

Exact Elliptic Compactons in Generalized Korteweg-DeVries Equations

We derive a general theorem relating the energy, momentum and velocity of any solitary wave solution of the generalized KdV equation which enables us to relate the amplitude, width, and momentum to the velocity of these solutions. We obtain the general condition for linear and Lyapunov stability. We then obtain a two parameter family of exact solutions to these equations which include elliptic and hyper-elliptic compacton solutions. For this general family we explicitly verify both the theorem and the stability criteria.

Supersymmetric Quantum Mechanics on Non-Commutative Plane

We study the Pauli equation on non-commutative plane. It is shown that the Supersymmetry algebra holds to all orders in the non-commutative parameter $θ$ in case the gyro-magnetic ratio $g$ is 2. Using Seiberg-Witten map, the first order in $θ$ correction to the spectrum is obtained in the case of uniform magnetic field. We find that the eigenstates in the non-commutative case are identical to the commutative case provided the magnetic field $B$ is everywhere replaced by $B(1+Bθ)$.

Solitons in 2+1 Dimensional Non-Commutative Maxwell Chern-Simons Higgs Theories

We find soliton solutions in the 2+1 dimensional non-commutative Maxwell Chern-Simons Higgs theories. In the limit of the Chern-Simons coefficient going to zero, these solutions go over to the previously found solutions in the non-commutative Maxwell Higgs theories. The new solutions may have relevance in the theory of the fractional quantum Hall effect and possibly in string vacua corresponding to open strings terminating on D2 branes in the presence of D0 branes.

A Quantum Many-body Problem in Two Dimensions: Ground State

We obtain the exact ground state for the Calogero-Sutherland problem in arbitrary dimensions. In the special case of two dimensions, we show that the problem is connected to the random matrix problem for complex matrices, provided the strength of the inverse-square interaction $g = 2$. In the thermodynamic limit, we obtain the ground state energy and the pair-correlation function and show that in this case there is no long-range order.

Anti-isospectral Transformations, Orthogonal Polynomials and Quasi-Exactly Solvable Problems

We consider the double sinh-Gordon potential which is a quasi-exactly solvable problem and show that in this case one has two sets of Bender-Dunne orthogonal polynomials . We study in some detail the various properties of these polynomials and the corresponding quotient polynomials. In particular, we show that the weight functions for these polynomials are not always positive. We also study the orthogonal polynomials of the double sine-Gordon potential which is related to the double sinh-Gordon case by an anti-isospectral transformation. Finally we discover a new quasi-exactly solvable problem by making use of the anti-isospectral transformation.

Compacton Solutions in a Class of Generalized Fifth Order Korteweg-de Vries Equations

We study a class of generalized fifth order Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equations which are derivable from a Lagrangian L(p,m,n,l) which has variable powers of the first and second derivatives of the field with powers given by the parameters p,m,n,l. The resulting field equation has solitary wave solutions of both the usual (non-compact) and compact variety ("compactons"). For the particular case that p=m=n+l, the solitary wave solutions have compact support and the feature that their width is independent of the amplitude. We discuss the Hamiltonian structure of these theories and find that mass, momentum, and energy are conserved. We find in general that these are not completely integrable systems. Numerical simulations show that an arbitrary compact initial wave packet whose width is wider than that of a compacton breaks up into several compactons all having the same width. The scattering of two compactons is almost elastic, with the left over wake eventually turning into compacton-anticompacton pairs. When there are two different compacton solutions for a single set of parameters the wider solution is stable, and this solution is a minimum of the Hamiltonian.

Exact Ground State of Several N-body Problems With an N-body Potential

I consider several N-body problems for which exact (bosonic) ground state and a class of excited states are known in case the N-bodies are also interacting via harmonic oscillator potential. I show that for all these problems the exact (bosonic) ground state and a class of excited states can also be obtained in case they interact via an N-body potential of the form $-e^2/\sqrt{\sumr^2_i}$ (or $-e^2/\sqrt{\sum_{i<j} (r_i - r_j)^2}$). Based on these and previously known examples, I conjecture that whenever an N-body problem is solvable in case the N-bodies are interacting via an oscillator potential, the same problem is also solvable in case they are interacting via the N-body potential. Based on several examples, I also conjecture that in either case one can always add an N-body potential of the form $β^2/{\sum_{i} r_i^2}$ and the problem is still solvable except that the degeneracy in the bound state spectrum is now much reduced.

We show that a Calogero-Sutherland type model with anharmonic interactions of fourth and sixth orders leads to the matrix model corresponding to the branched polymers. We also show that by suitably modifying this model one can also obtain N-particle problems which are connected to matrix models corresponding to the pure gravity phase as well as corresponding to the transition point between the soap bubble and the branched polymer phase.

Chern-Simons Term and Charged Vortices in Abelian and Nonabelian Gauge Theories

In this article we review some of the recent advances regarding the charged vortex solutions in abelian and nonabelian gauge theories with Chern-Simons (CS) term in two space dimensions. Since these nontrivial results are essentially because of the CS term, hence, we first discuss in some detail the various properties of the CS term in two space dimensions. In particular, it is pointed out that this parity (P) and time reversal (T) violating but gauge invariant term when added to the Maxwell Lagrangian gives a massive gauge quanta and yet the theory is still gauge invariant. Further, the vacuum of such a theory shows the magneto-electric effect. Besides, we show that the CS term can also be generated by spontaneous symmetry breaking as well as by radiative corrections. A detailed discussion about Coleman-Hill theorem is also given which aserts that the parity-odd piece of the vacuum polarization tensor at zero momentum transfer is unaffected by two and multi-loop effects. Topological quantization of the coefficient of the CS term in nonabelian gauge theories is also elaborated in some detail. One of the dramatic effect of the CS term is that the vortices of the abelian (as well as nonabelian) Higgs model now acquire finite quantized charge and angular momentum. The various properties of these vortices are discussed at length with special emphasis on some of the recent developments including the discovery of the self-dual charged vortex solutions.

Truncated Harmonic Osillator and Parasupersymmetric Quantum Mechanics

We discuss in detail the parasupersymmetric quantum mechanics of arbitrary order where the parasupersymmetry is between the normal bosons and those corresponding to the truncated harmonic oscillator. We show that even though the parasusy algebra is different from that of the usual parasusy quantum mechanics, still the consequences of the two are identical. We further show that the parasupersymmetric quantum mechanics of arbitrary order p can also be rewritten in terms of p supercharges (i.e. all of which obey $Q_i^{2} = 0$). However, the Hamiltonian cannot be expressed in a simple form in terms of the p supercharges except in a special case. A model of conformal parasupersymmetry is also discussed and it is shown that in this case, the p supercharges, the p conformal supercharges along with Hamiltonian H, conformal generator K and dilatation generator D form a closed algebra.

Supersymmetry and Quantum Mechanics

In the past ten years, the ideas of supersymmetry have been profitably applied to many nonrelativistic quantum mechanical problems. In particular, there is now a much deeper understanding of why certain potentials are analytically solvable and an array of powerful new approximation methods for handling potentials which are not exactly solvable. In this report, we review the theoretical formulation of supersymmetric quantum mechanics and discuss many applications. Exactly solvable potentials can be understood in terms of a few basic ideas which include supersymmetric partner potentials, shape invariance and operator transformations. Familiar solvable potentials all have the property of shape invariance. We describe new exactly solvable shape invariant potentials which include the recently discovered self-similar potentials as a special case. The connection between inverse scattering, isospectral potentials and supersymmetric quantum mechanics is discussed and multi-soliton solutions of the KdV equation are constructed. Approximation methods are also discussed within the framework of supersymmetric quantum mechanics and in particular it is shown that a supersymmetry inspired WKB approximation is exact for a class of shape invariant potentials. Supersymmetry ideas give particularly nice results for the tunneling rate in a double well potential and for improving large $N$ expansions. We also discuss the problem of a charged Dirac particle in an external magnetic field and other potentials in terms of supersymmetric quantum mechanics. Finally, we discuss structures more general than supersymmetric quantum mechanics such as parasupersymmetric quantum mechanics in which there is a symmetry between a boson and a para-fermion of order $p$.
