Axion gravitodynamics, Lense-Thirring effect, and gravitational waves

We investigate physical implications of a gravitational analog of axion electrodynamics with a parity-violating gravitoelectromagnetic theta term. This is related to the Nieh-Yan topological invariant in gravity with torsion, in contrast to the well-studied gravitational Chern-Simons term quadratic in curvature, coupled via a dynamical axionlike scalar field. Axion gravitodynamics is the corresponding linearized theory. We find that potentially observable effects are over 80 orders of magnitude stronger than for its Chern-Simons counterpart and could be in reach for detection by experiments in the near future. For a near-Earth scenario, we derive corrections to the Lense-Thirring effect and compare them to data from satellite-based experiments (Gravity Probe B). For gravitational waves, we find modified dispersion relations, derive the corresponding polarization-dependent modified group and phase velocities, and compare them to data from neutron star mergers (GW170817) to derive even stronger bounds.

Duality, generalized global symmetries and jet space isometries

We revisit universal features of duality in linear and nonlinear relativistic scalar and Abelian 1-form theories with single or multiple fields, which exhibit ordinary or generalized global symmetries. We show that such global symmetries can be interpreted as generalized Killing isometries on a suitable, possibly graded, target space of fields or its jet space when the theory contains higher derivatives. This is realized via a generalized sigma model perspective motivated from the fact that higher spin particles can be Nambu-Goldstone bosons of spontaneously broken generalized global symmetries. We work out in detail the 2D examples of a compact scalar and the massless Heisenberg pion fireball model and the 4D examples of Maxwell, Born-Infeld and ModMax electrodynamics. In all cases we identify the 't Hooft anomaly that obstructs the simultaneous gauging of both global symmetries and confirm the anomaly matching under duality. These results readily generalize to higher gauge theories for p-forms. For multifield theories we discuss the transformation of couplings under duality as two sets of Buscher rules for even or odd differential forms.

Twisted R-Poisson Sigma Models

The AKSZ construction was developed as a geometrical formalism to find the solution to the classical master equation in the BV quantization of topological branes based on the concept of QP manifolds. However, the formalism does not apply in presence of Wess-Zumino terms, as demonstrated recently by Ikeda and Strobl in the simplest example of WZW-Poisson sigma models. In this contribution, we review a class of topological field theories in arbitrary dimensions, the twisted R-Poisson sigma models, which suitably generalize Poisson or twisted Poisson sigma models. Their relation to differential graded manifolds and higher geometry is discussed and we sketch how to identify the solution to the classical master equation even though the target space does not have a QP structure.

Non-Relativistic Supersymmetry on Curved Three-Manifolds

We construct explicit examples of non-relativistic supersymmetric field theories on curved Newton-Cartan three-manifolds. These results are obtained by performing a null reduction of four-dimensional supersymmetric field theories on Lorentzian manifolds and the Killing spinor equations that their supersymmetry parameters obey. This gives rise to a set of algebraic and differential Killing spinor equations that are obeyed by the supersymmetry parameters of the resulting three-dimensional non-relativistic field theories. We derive necessary and sufficient conditions that determine whether a Newton-Cartan background admits non-trivial solutions of these Killing spinor equations. Two classes of examples of Newton-Cartan backgrounds that obey these conditions are discussed. The first class is characterised by an integrable foliation, corresponding to so-called twistless torsional geometries, and includes manifolds whose spatial slices are isomorphic to the Poincaré disc. The second class of examples has a non-integrable foliation structure and corresponds to contact manifolds.

Relation between standard and exotic duals of differential forms

Exotic duality suggests a link between gauge theories for differential p-forms and tensor fields of mixed symmetry [D-2,p] in D spacetime dimensions. On the other hand, standard Hodge duality relates p-form to (D-p-2)-form gauge potentials by exchanging their field equations and Bianchi identities. Following the methodology and the recent proposal of Henneaux, Lekeu and Leonard that the double dual of the free graviton is algebraically related to the original graviton and does not provide a new, independent description of the gravitational field, we examine the status of exotic duality for p-forms. We find that the exotic dual is algebraically related to the standard dual of a differential form and therefore they provide equivalent descriptions as free fields. Introducing sources then leads to currents being proportional. This relation is extended in a straightforward way for higher exotic duals of the mixed symmetry type [D-2,...,D-2,p].

BRST symmetry of doubled membrane sigma-models

Courant sigma-models encode the geometric and non-geometric fluxes of compactified closed string theory as generalized Wess-Zumino terms and exhibit their relation to Courant algebroids. In recent work, we proposed a doubled membrane sigma-model that establishes the corresponding connection to double field theory and its algebroid structure. The strategy is to consider a "large" Courant sigma-model over a doubled target spacetime and identify a suitable projection that leads to a sigma-model for doubled fields. In this note, we provide further details for this construction. Starting from the BRST symmetry of the BV action that satisfies the classical master equation, we consistently project the BRST transformations of the superfields of the "large" Courant sigma-model to obtain the gauge transformations of the doubled membrane sigma-model. We show that demanding gauge invariance and the closure of gauge transformations of the worldvolume theory, leads to a condition that is in direct correspondence to the strong constraint of the target space double field theory.

T-duality without isometry via extended gauge symmetries of 2D sigma models

Target space duality is one of the most profound properties of string theory. However it customarily requires that the background fields satisfy certain invariance conditions in order to perform it consistently; for instance the vector fields along the directions that T-duality is performed have to generate isometries. In the present paper we examine in detail the possibility to perform T-duality along non-isometric directions. In particular, based on a recent work of Kotov and Strobl, we study gauged 2D sigma models where gauge invariance for an extended set of gauge transformations imposes weaker constraints than in the standard case, notably the corresponding vector fields are not Killing. This formulation enables us to follow a procedure analogous to the derivation of the Buscher rules and obtain two dual models, by integrating out once the Lagrange multipliers and once the gauge fields. We show that this construction indeed works in non-trivial cases by examining an explicit class of examples based on step 2 nilmanifolds.

Dynamical phase space from a SO(d,d) matrix model

It is shown that a matrix model with SO(d,d) global symmetry is derived from a generalized Yang-Mills theory on the standard Courant algebroid. This model keeps all the positive features of the well-studied type IIB matrix model, and it has many additional welcome properties. We show that it does not only capture the dynamics of spacetime, but it should be associated with the dynamics of phase space. This is supported by a large set of classical solutions of its equations of motion, which corresponds to phase spaces of noncommutative curved manifolds and points to a new mechanism of emergent gravity. The model possesses an additional symmetry that exchanges positions and momenta, in analogy to quantum mechanics. It is argued that the emergence of phase space in the model is an essential feature for the investigation of the precise relation of matrix models to string theory and quantum gravity.

Sigma models for genuinely non-geometric backgrounds

The existence of genuinely non-geometric backgrounds, i.e. ones without geometric dual, is an important question in string theory. In this paper we examine this question from a sigma model perspective. First we construct a particular class of Courant algebroids as protobialgebroids with all types of geometric and non-geometric fluxes. For such structures we apply the mathematical result that any Courant algebroid gives rise to a 3D topological sigma model of the AKSZ type and we discuss the corresponding 2D field theories. It is found that these models are always geometric, even when both 2-form and 2-vector fields are neither vanishing nor inverse of one another. Taking a further step, we suggest an extended class of 3D sigma models, whose world volume is embedded in phase space, which allow for genuinely non-geometric backgrounds. Adopting the doubled formalism such models can be related to double field theory, albeit from a world sheet perspective.

Dirac structures on nilmanifolds and coexistence of fluxes

We study some aspects of the generalized geometry of nilmanifolds and examine to which extent different types of fluxes can coexist on them. Nilmanifolds constitute a class of homogeneous spaces which are interesting in string compactifications with fluxes since they carry geometric flux by construction. They are generalized Calabi-Yau spaces and therefore simple examples of generalized geometry at work. We identify and classify Dirac structures on nilmanifolds, which are maximally isotropic subbundles closed under the Courant bracket. In the presence of non-vanishing fluxes, these structures are twisted and closed under appropriate extensions of the Courant bracket. Twisted Dirac structures on a nilmanifold may carry multiple coexistent fluxes of any type. We also show how dual Dirac structures combine to Courant algebroids and work out an explicit example where all types of generalized fluxes coexist. These results may be useful in the context of general flux compactifications in string theory.

Effective actions of non-geometric fivebranes

An interesting consequence of string dualities is that they reveal situations where the geometry of a string background appears to be globally ill-defined, a phenomenon usually referred to as non-geometry. On the other hand, string theory contains extended objects with non-trivial monodromy around them, often dubbed defect or exotic branes in co-dimension two. We determine and examine the worldvolume actions and the couplings of certain such branes. In particular, based on specific chains of T and S-dualities, we derive the DBI and WZ actions, which describe the dynamics of type IIB fivebranes as well as their couplings to the appropriate gauge potentials associated to mixed symmetry tensors. Based on these actions we discuss how these branes act as sources of non-geometric fluxes. In one case this flux is what is usually termed Q flux, associated to a T-fold compactification, while in the S-dual case a type of non-geometry related to the Ramond-Ramond sector is encountered.

Generalized Yang-Mills theory and the D-brane effective action

Non-abelian gauge theories in the context of generalized complex geometry are discussed. The generalized connection naturally contains standard gauge and scalar fields, unified in a purely geometric way. We define the corresponding Yang-Mills theory on particular subbundles of a Courant algebroid, known as Dirac structures, where the generalized curvature is a tensor. Different Dirac structures correspond to different known theories, such as the bosonic sector of maximally supersymmetric Yang-Mills in ten and four dimensions and reduced matrix models. Furthermore, we revisit the non-abelian world volume effective action of D-branes in this formalism, where the gauge field on the brane and the transverse scalars are unified, while the action does not contain pullbacks of fields and its consistency with T-duality is verified at face value.

Phase space quantization, noncommutativity and the gravitational field

In this paper we study the structure of the phase space in noncommutative geometry in the presence of a nontrivial frame. Our basic assumptions are that the underlying space is a symplectic and parallelizable manifold. Furthermore, we assume the validity of the Leibniz rule and the Jacobi identities. We consider noncommutative spaces due to the quantization of the symplectic structure and determine the momentum operators that guarantee a set of canonical commutation relations, appropriately extended to include the nontrivial frame. We stress the important role of left vs. right acting operators and of symplectic duality. This enables us to write down the form of the full phase space algebra on these noncommutative spaces, both in the noncompact and in the compact case. We test our results against the class of 4D and 6D symplectic nilmanifolds, thus presenting a large set of nontrivial examples that realize the general formalism.

Generalized fluxes in matrix compactifications

In the recent years a lot of attention is focused on unconventional string compactifications. A variety of different but related frameworks was developed in order to address issues such as duality invariance, non-geometry and non-commutativity in string theory. In this contribution we review and clarify the approach that goes through matrix models. Furthermore, we discuss some connections of this framework to other related approaches.

Axiology

Axions might play a crucial role for the solution of the strong CP-problem and explanation of cold dark matter in the universe. In addition they may find applications in the formulation of inflationary models for the early universe and can serve as candidates for quintessence. We show that all these phenomena can be described within a single framework exhibiting a specific pattern of mass scales: the axionic see-saw. We also discuss the role of supersymmetry (susy) in this axionic system in two specific examples: weak scale susy in the (multi) TeV range and tele-susy with a breakdown scale coinciding with the decay constant of the QCD axion: $f_a\sim 10^{11}-10^{12}$ GeV.

Matrix theory compactifications on twisted tori

We study compactifications of Matrix theory on twisted tori and non-commutative versions of them. As a first step, we review the construction of multidimensional twisted tori realized as nilmanifolds based on certain nilpotent Lie algebras. Subsequently, matrix compactifications on tori are revisited and the previously known results are supplemented with a background of a non-commutative torus with non-constant non-commutativity and an underlying non-associative structure on its phase space. Next we turn our attention to 3- and 6-dimensional twisted tori and we describe consistent backgrounds of Matrix theory on them by stating and solving the conditions which describe the corresponding compactification. Both commutative and non-commutative solutions are found in all cases. Finally, we comment on the correspondence among the obtained solutions and flux compactifications of 11-dimensional supergravity, as well as on relations among themselves, such as Seiberg-Witten maps and T-duality.

Matrix theory origins of non-geometric fluxes

We explore the origins of non-geometric fluxes within the context of M theory described as a matrix model. Building upon compactifications of Matrix theory on non-commutative tori and twisted tori, we formulate the conditions which describe compactifications with non-geometric fluxes. These turn out to be related to certain deformations of tori with non-commutative and non-associative structures on their phase space. Quantization of flux appears as a natural consequence of the framework and leads to the resolution of non-associativity at the level of the unitary operators. The quantum-mechanical nature of the model bestows an important role on the phase space. In particular, the geometric and non-geometric fluxes exchange their properties when going from position space to momentum space thus providing a duality among the two. Moreover, the operations which connect solutions with different fluxes are described and their relation to T-duality is discussed. Finally, we provide some insights on the effective gauge theories obtained from these matrix compactifications.

Nearly Kähler heterotic compactifications with fermion condensates

We revisit AdS_4 heterotic compactifications on nearly Kähler manifolds in the presence of H-flux and certain fermion condensates. Unlike previous studies, we do not assume the vanishing of the supersymmetry variations. Instead we determine the full equations of motion originating from the ten-dimensional action, and subsequently we provide explicit solutions to them on nearly Kähler manifolds at first order in alpha'. The Bianchi identity is also taken into account in order to guarantee the absence of all anomalies. In the presence of H-flux, which is identified with the torsion of the internal space, as well as of fermion condensates in the gaugino and dilatino sectors, new solutions are determined. These solutions provide a full classification of consistent backgrounds of heterotic supergravity under our assumptions. All the new solutions are non-supersymmetric, while previously known supersymmetric ones are recovered too. Our results indicate that fully consistent (supersymmetric or not) heterotic vacua on nearly Kähler manifolds are scarce, even on AdS_4, and they can be completely classified.

Orbifold matrix models and fuzzy extra dimensions

We revisit an orbifold matrix model obtained as a restriction of the type IIB matrix model on a Z_3-invariant sector. An investigation of its moduli space of vacua is performed and issues related to chiral gauge theory and gravity are discussed. Modifications of the orbifolded model triggered by Chern-Simons or mass deformations are also analyzed. Certain vacua of the modified models exhibit higher-dimensional behaviour with internal geometries related to fuzzy spheres.

Fuzzy extra dimensions and particle physics models

In the present contribution the construction of particle physics models in theories with fuzzy extra dimensions is discussed. We focus on a bottom-up approach where the structure of a higher-dimensional theory arises within ordinary four-dimensional field theory via an appropriate mechanism based on spontaneous symmetry breaking. Subsequently, possible ways to obtain particle physics models with realistic spectrum in this framework are exhibited.

Intersecting branes and a standard model realization in matrix models

We consider intersecting brane solutions of the type IIB matrix model. It is shown that fermionic zero-modes arise on such backgrounds, localized at the brane intersections. They lead to chiral fermions in four dimensions under certain conditions. Such configurations reproduce many of the welcome features in similar string-theoretic constructions. Therefore they can be used to construct semi-realistic particle physics models in the framework of Yang-Mills matrix models. In particular, we present a brane configuration which realizes the correct chiral spectrum of the standard model in the matrix model. Furthermore, the stability of intersecting branes is discussed by analyzing the 1-loop effective action. It is shown that intersecting branes may form a bound state for certain flux configurations. The four-dimensional geometry of the branes is generic, and determined by the (emergent) gravity sector of the matrix model.

On Lie-algebraic solutions of the type IIB matrix model

A systematic search for Lie algebra solutions of the type IIB matrix model is performed. Our survey is based on the classification of all Lie algebras for dimensions up to five and of all nilpotent Lie algebras of dimension six. It is shown that Lie-type solutions of the equations of motion of the type IIB matrix model exist and they correspond to certain nilpotent and solvable Lie algebras. Their representation in terms of Hermitian matrices is discussed in detail. These algebras give rise to certain non-commutative spaces for which the corresponding star-products are provided. Finally the issue of constructing quantized compact nilmanifolds and solvmanifolds based on the above algebras is addressed.

Higher-Dimensional Unified Theories with Fuzzy Extra Dimensions

Theories defined in higher than four dimensions have been used in various frameworks and have a long and interesting history. Here we review certain attempts, developed over the last years, towards the construction of unified particle physics models in the context of higher-dimensional gauge theories with non-commutative extra dimensions. These ideas have been developed in two complementary ways, namely (i) starting with a higher-dimensional gauge theory and dimensionally reducing it to four dimensions over fuzzy internal spaces and (ii) starting with a four-dimensional, renormalizable gauge theory and dynamically generating fuzzy extra dimensions. We describe the above approaches and moreover we discuss the inclusion of fermions and the construction of realistic chiral theories in this context.

Nearly-Kaehler dimensional reduction of the heterotic string

The effective action in four dimensions resulting from the ten-dimensional N=1 heterotic supergravity coupled to N=1 supersymmetric Yang-Mills upon dimensional reduction over nearly-Kaehler manifolds is discussed. Nearly-Kaehler manifolds are an interesting class of manifolds admitting an SU(3)-structure and in six dimensions all homogeneous nearly-Kaehler manifolds are included in the class of the corresponding non-symmetric coset spaces plus a group manifold. Therefore it is natural to apply the Coset Space Dimensional Reduction scheme using these coset spaces as internal manifolds in order to determine the four-dimensional theory.

Orbifolds, fuzzy spheres and chiral fermions

Starting with a N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory in four dimensions with gauge group SU(3N) we perform an orbifold projection leading to a N=1 supersymmetric SU(N)^3 Yang-Mills theory with matter supermultiplets in bifundamental representations of the gauge group, which is chiral and anomaly free. Subsequently, we search for vacua of the projected theory which can be interpreted as spontaneously generated twisted fuzzy spheres. We show that by adding the appropriate soft supersymmetry breaking terms we can indeed reveal such vacua. Three cases are studied, where the gauge group is spontaneously broken further to the low-energy gauge groups SU(4)xSU(2)xSU(2), SU(4)^3 and SU(3)^3. Such models behave in intermediate scales as higher-dimensional theories with a finite Kaluza-Klein tower, while their low-energy physics is governed by the corresponding zero-modes and exhibit chirality in the fermionic sector. The most interesting case from the phenomenological point of view turns out to be the SU(3)^3 unified theory, which has several interesting features such as (i) it can be promoted to a finite theory, (ii) it breaks further spontaneously first to the MSSM and then to SU(3)xU(1)_{em} due to its own scalar sector, i.e. without the need of additional superfields and (iii) the corresponding vacua lead to spontaneously generated fuzzy spheres.

On the fermion spectrum of spontaneously generated fuzzy extra dimensions with fluxes

We consider certain vacua of four-dimensional SU(N) gauge theory with the same field content as the N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory, resulting from potentials which break the N=4 supersymmetry as well as its global SO(6) symmetry down to SO(3) x SO(3). We show that the theory behaves at intermediate scales as Yang-Mills theory on M^4 x S^2 x S^2, where the extra dimensions are fuzzy spheres with magnetic fluxes. We determine in particular the structure of the zero modes due to the fluxes, which leads to low-energy mirror models.
