A Cornucopia of AdS$_5$ Vacua

We report on a systematic search for AdS$_5$ vacua corresponding to critical points of the potential in the five-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=8$ SO(6) gauged supergravity. By employing Google's TensorFlow Machine Learning library, we find the total of 32 critical points including 5 previously known ones. All 27 new critical points are non-supersymmetric. We compute the mass spectra of scalar fluctuatons for all points and find that the non-supersymmetric AdS$_5$ vacua are perturbatively unstable. Many of the new critical points can be found analytically within consistent truncations of the $\mathcal{N}=8$ supergravity with respect to discrete subgroups of the S(O(6)$\times$ GL(2,$\mathbb{R}$)) symmetry of the potential. In particular, we discuss in detail a $\mathbb{Z}_2^3$-invariant truncation with 10 scalar fields and 15 critical points. We also compute explicitly the scalar potential in a $\mathbb{Z}_2^2$-invariant extension of that truncation to 18 scalar fields and reproduce 17 of the 32 critical points from the numerical search. Finally, we show that the full potential as a function of 42 scalar fields can be studied analytically using the so-called solvable parametrization. In particular, we find that all critical points lie in a $\mathbb{Z}_2$-invariant subspace spanned by 22 scalar fields.

Holographic Interfaces in N=4 SYM: Janus and J-folds

We find the holographic dual to the three classes of superconformal Janus interfaces in $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM that preserve three-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=4$, $\mathcal{N}=2$, and $\mathcal{N}=1$ supersymmetry. The solutions are constructed in five-dimensional SO(6) maximal gauged supergravity and are then uplifted to type IIB supergravity. Corresponding to each of the three classes of Janus solutions, there are also AdS$_4\times S^1\times S^5$ J-fold backgrounds. These J-folds have a non-trivial SL$(2,\mathbb{Z})$ monodromy for the axio-dilaton on the $S^1$ and are dual to three-dimensional superconformal field theories.

Holographic Uniformization and Black Hole Attractors

We establish an attractor mechanism for the horizon metric of asymptotically locally AdS4 supersymmetric black holes. The Kähler moduli of the metric are not fixed in the asymptotic region, however supersymmetry dictates that the near horizon metric must be the constant curvature one. We show how this mechanism is realized in detail for four-dimensional N=2 gauged supergravity coupled to vector multiplets by focusing on the STU model. A similar analysis is performed for gauged supergravity theories in five, six, and seven dimensions where we establish the same mechanism by extending previous results on holographic uniformization.

Janus and J-fold solutions in type IIB supergravity

I discuss recent supergravity constructions of type IIB holographic interfaces in four-dimensional ${\cal N}=1$ and ${\cal N}=4$ field theories. I explain how each holographic interface can be compactified on a circle with an SL$(2,{\bf Z})$ monodromy leading to a novel AdS$_4$ supergravity solution. These AdS$_4$ backgrounds are argued to be dual to so-called J-fold superconformal field theories in three dimensions.

A Holographic Kaleidoscope for $\mathcal{N}=1^*$

We study in detail the recently-found family of asymptotically AdS$_5\times S^5$ type IIB supergravity solutions dual to the $\mathcal{N}=1^*$ SYM theory with equal masses. The backgrounds exhibit a naked singularity and are labelled by a dimensionless parameter, $λ$, which is interpreted as the ratio of the gaugino condensate and the mass in the dual field theory. When $|λ|<1$ we show that the naked singularity is due to a smeared distribution of polarized $(p,q)$ five-branes. For this range of parameters we study the nature of the singularity using probe strings and show that the dual line operators exhibit screening behavior. These features are in line with the physics anticipated in the work of Polchinski-Strassler. For $|λ|=1$ the naked singularity has qualitatively different behavior which has no clear brane interpretation. We show that when $λ=1$ the singularity can be excised and replaced by a smooth Euclidean supergravity solution with an $S^4$ boundary.

Supersymmetric Yang-Mills, Spherical Branes, and Precision Holography

Using supersymmetric localization we compute the free energy and BPS Wilson loop vacuum expectation values for planar maximally supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory on $S^d$ in the strong coupling limit for $2\leq d<6$. The same calculation can also be performed in supergravity using the recently found spherical brane solutions. We find excellent agreement between the two sets of results. This constitutes a non-trivial precision test of holography in a non-conformal setting. The free energy of maximal SYM on $S^6$ diverges in the strong coupling limit which might signify the onset of little string theory. We show how this divergence can be regularized both in QFT and in supergravity. We also consider $d=7$ with a small negative 't Hooft coupling and show that the free energy and Wilson loop vacuum expectation value agree with the results from supergravity after addressing some subtleties.

Wrapped Branes and Punctured Horizons

Large classes of AdS$_p$ supergravity backgrounds describing the IR dynamics of $p$-branes wrapped on a Riemann surface are determined by a solution to the Liouville equation. The regular solutions of this equation lead to the well-known wrapped brane supergravity solutions associated with the constant curvature metric on a compact Riemann surface. We show that some singular solutions of the Liouville equation have a physical interpretation as explicit point-like brane sources on the Riemann surface. We uncover the details of this picture by focusing on $\mathcal{N}=1$ theories of class $\mathcal{S}$ arising from M5-branes on a punctured Riemann surface. We present explicit AdS$_5$ solutions dual to these SCFTs and check the holographic duality by showing the non-trivial agreement of 't Hooft anomalies.

Is inflation from unwinding fluxes IIB?

In this paper we argue that the mechanism of unwinding inflation is naturally present in warped compactifications of type IIB string theory with local throats. The unwinding of flux is caused by its annihilation against branes. The resulting inflaton potential is linear with periodic modulations. We initiate an analysis of the inflationary dynamics and cosmological observables, which are highly constrained by moduli stabilization. For the simplified model of single-Kähler Calabi-Yau spaces we find that many, though not all of the consistency constraints can be satisfied. Particularly, in this simple model geometric constraints are in tension with obtaining the observed amplitude of the scalar power spectrum. However, we do find 60 efolds of inflation with a trans-Planckian field excursion which offers the hope that slightly more complicated models can lead to a fully consistent explicit construction of large field inflation of this kind.

Polarised antibranes from Smarr relations

We study the backreaction of smeared and localised anti M2-branes placed at the tip of the CGLP background. To this end we derive a Smarr relation for backreacted antibranes at zero and finite temperature. For extremal antibranes we show that if smeared they cannot have regular horizons, whereas localised M2-branes can potentially be regular when polarised into M5-branes, in agreement with the probe result of Klebanov and Pufu. We further discuss antibranes at finite temperature and argue that localised antibrane solutions with regular horizons are not excluded.

Smeared antibranes polarise in AdS

In the recent literature it has been questioned whether the local backreaction of antibranes in flux throats can induce a perturbative brane-flux decay. Most evidence for this can be gathered for D6 branes and Dp branes smeared over 6-p compact directions, in line with the absence of finite temperature solutions for these cases. The solutions in the literature have flat worldvolume geometries and non-compact transversal spaces. In this paper we consider what happens when the worldvolume is AdS and the transversal space is compact. We show that in these circumstances brane polarisation smoothens out the flux singularity, which is an indication that brane-flux decay is prevented. This is consistent with the fact that the cosmological constant would be less negative after brane-flux decay. Our results extend recent results on AdS_7 solutions from D6 branes to AdS_(p+1) solutions from Dp branes. We show that supersymmetry of the AdS solutions depend on p non-trivially.

The many faces of brane-flux annihilation

Fluxes can decay via the nucleation of Brown-Teitelboim bubbles, but when the decaying fluxes induce D-brane charges this process must be accompanied with an annihilation of D-branes. This occurs via dynamics inside the bubble wall as was well described for (anti-)D3 branes branes annihilating against 3-form fluxes. In this paper we extend this to the other Dp branes with p smaller than seven. Generically there are two decay channels: one for the RR flux and one for the NSNS flux. The RR channel is accompanied by brane annihilation that can be understood from the Dp branes polarising into D(p+2) branes, whereas the NSNS channel corresponds to Dp branes polarising into NS5 branes or KK5 branes. We illustrate this with the decay of antibranes probing local toroidal throat geometries obtained from T-duality of the D6 solution in massive type IIA. We show that anti-Dp branes are metastable against annihilation in these backgrounds, at least at the probe level.

Wilson lines and Chern-Simons flux in explicit heterotic Calabi-Yau compactifications

We study to what extent Wilson lines in heterotic Calabi-Yau compactifications lead to non-trivial H-flux via Chern-Simons terms. Wilson lines are basic ingredients for Standard Model constructions but their induced H-flux may affect the consistency of the leading order background geometry and of the two-dimensional worldsheet theory. Moreover H-flux in heterotic compactifications would play an important role for moduli stabilization and could strongly constrain the supersymmetry breaking scale. We show how to compute H-flux and the corresponding superpotential, given an explicit complete intersection Calabi-Yau compactification and choice of Wilson lines. We do so by classifying special Lagrangian submanifolds in the Calabi-Yau, understanding how the Wilson lines project onto these submanifolds, and computing their Chern-Simons invariants. We illustrate our procedure with the quintic hypersurface as well as the split-bicubic, which can provide a potentially realistic three generation model.

Effective actions of non-geometric fivebranes

An interesting consequence of string dualities is that they reveal situations where the geometry of a string background appears to be globally ill-defined, a phenomenon usually referred to as non-geometry. On the other hand, string theory contains extended objects with non-trivial monodromy around them, often dubbed defect or exotic branes in co-dimension two. We determine and examine the worldvolume actions and the couplings of certain such branes. In particular, based on specific chains of T and S-dualities, we derive the DBI and WZ actions, which describe the dynamics of type IIB fivebranes as well as their couplings to the appropriate gauge potentials associated to mixed symmetry tensors. Based on these actions we discuss how these branes act as sources of non-geometric fluxes. In one case this flux is what is usually termed Q flux, associated to a T-fold compactification, while in the S-dual case a type of non-geometry related to the Ramond-Ramond sector is encountered.

Generalized Yang-Mills theory and the D-brane effective action

Non-abelian gauge theories in the context of generalized complex geometry are discussed. The generalized connection naturally contains standard gauge and scalar fields, unified in a purely geometric way. We define the corresponding Yang-Mills theory on particular subbundles of a Courant algebroid, known as Dirac structures, where the generalized curvature is a tensor. Different Dirac structures correspond to different known theories, such as the bosonic sector of maximally supersymmetric Yang-Mills in ten and four dimensions and reduced matrix models. Furthermore, we revisit the non-abelian world volume effective action of D-branes in this formalism, where the gauge field on the brane and the transverse scalars are unified, while the action does not contain pullbacks of fields and its consistency with T-duality is verified at face value.
