Quantum sampling for the Euclidean path integral of lattice gauge theory

Although the Hamiltonian formalism is so far favored for quantum computation of lattice gauge theory, the path integral formalism would never be useless. The advantages of the path integral formalism are the knowledge and experience accumulated by classical lattice simulation and manifest Lorentz invariance. We discuss quantum computation of lattice gauge theory in the path integral formalism. We utilize a quantum sampling algorithm to generate gauge configurations, and demonstrate a benchmark test of $Z_2$ lattice gauge theory on a four-dimensional hypercube.

Real-time simulation of (2+1)-dimensional lattice gauge theory on qubits

We study the quantum simulation of Z2 lattice gauge theory in 2+1 dimensions. The dual variable formulation, the so-called Wegner duality, is utilized for reducing redundant gauge degrees of freedom. The problem of artificial charge unconservation is resolved for any charge distribution. As a demonstration, we simulate the real-time evolution of the system with two static electric charges, i.e., with two temporal Wilson lines. Some results obtained by the simulator (with no hardware noise) and the real device (with sizable hardware noise) of a quantum computer are shown.

't Hooft surface in lattice gauge theory

We discuss the lattice formulation of the 't Hooft surface, that is, the two-dimensional surface operator of a dual variable. The 't Hooft surface describes the world sheets of topological vortices. We derive the formulas to calculate the expectation value of the 't Hooft surface in the multiple-charge lattice Abelian Higgs model and in the lattice non-Abelian Higgs model. As the first demonstration of the formula, we compute the intervortex potential in the charge-2 lattice Abelian Higgs model.

Quantum Monte Carlo simulation of intervortex potential in superconductors

We investigate the interaction potential of superconducting vortices at the full quantum level. We formulate the interaction potential in a constrained path integral and calculate it by the quantum Monte Carlo simulation. The vortex-vortex potential is attractive (type-I), repulsive (type-II), and flat (critical) depending on a coupling constant. The vortex-antivortex potential also depends on the coupling constant at long range but is always attractive at short range.

Berry phase in lattice QCD

We propose the lattice QCD calculation of the Berry phase which is defined by the ground state of a single fermion. We perform the ground-state projection of a single-fermion propagator, construct the Berry link variable on a momentum-space lattice, and calculate the Berry phase. As the first application, the first Chern number of the (2+1)-dimensional Wilson fermion is calculated by the Monte Carlo simulation.

Magnetism and rotation in relativistic field theory

We investigate the analogy between magnetism and rotation in relativistic theory. In nonrelativistic theory, the exact correspondence between magnetism and rotation is established in the presence of an external trapping potential. Based on this, we analyze relativistic rotation under external trapping potentials. A Landau-like quantization is obtained by considering an energy-dependent potential.

Nonrelativistic Banks-Casher relation and random matrix theory for multi-component fermionic superfluids

We apply QCD-inspired techniques to study nonrelativistic N-component degenerate fermions with attractive interactions. By analyzing the singular-value spectrum of the fermion matrix in the Lagrangian, we derive several exact relations that characterize the spontaneous symmetry breaking U(1)xSU(N)$\to$Sp(N) through bifermion condensates. These are nonrelativistic analogues of the Banks-Casher relation and the Smilga-Stern relation in QCD. Non-local order parameters are also introduced and their spectral representations are derived, from which a nontrivial constraint on the phase diagram is obtained. The effective theory of soft collective excitations is derived and its equivalence to random matrix theory is demonstrated in the epsilon-regime. We numerically confirm the above analytical predictions in Monte Carlo simulations.

Complex Langevin simulation of quantum vortices in a Bose-Einstein condensate

The ab-initio simulation of quantum vortices in a Bose-Einstein condensate is performed by adopting the complex Langevin techniques. We simulate the nonrelativistic boson field theory at finite chemical potential under rotation. In the superfluid phase, vortices are generated above a critical angular velocity and the circulation is clearly quantized even in the presence of quantum fluctuations.

Inhomogeneous Polyakov loop induced by inhomogeneous chiral condensates

We study the spatial inhomogeneity of the Polyakov loop induced by inhomogeneous chiral condensates. We formulate an effective model of gluons on the background fields of chiral condensates, and perform its lattice simulation. On the background of inhomogeneous chiral condensates, the Polyakov loop exhibits an in-phase spatial oscillation with the chiral condensates. We also analyze the heavy quark potential and show that the inhomogeneous Polyakov loop indicates the inhomogeneous confinement of heavy quarks.

Lattice QCD with mismatched Fermi surfaces

We study two flavor fermions with mismatched chemical potentials in quenched lattice QCD. We first consider a large isospin chemical potential, where a charged pion is condensed, and then introduce a small mismatch between the chemical potentials of the up quark and the anti-down quark. We find that the homogeneous pion condensate is destroyed by the mismatch of the chemical potentials. We also find that the two-point correlation function shows spatial oscillation, which indicates an inhomogeneous ground state, although it is not massless but massive in the present simulation setup.

Temporal Chiral Spiral in Strong Magnetic Fields

Vacuum properties of quantum chromodynamics in strong magnetic and finite electric fields are investigated. We show that when a uniform electric field is instantaneously applied in the parallel direction to a strong magnetic field, it induces temporal oscillation of the chiral and pion condensates. This is a temporal analog to the chiral spiral. The oscillation originates with the propagation of the collective mode, which is protected by the axial anomaly and thus nondissipative.

Charged vector mesons in a strong magnetic field

We show that charged vector mesons cannot be condensed by a magnetic field. Although some hadron models predict the charged vector meson condensation in a strong magnetic field, we prove, by means of the Vafa-Witten theorem, that this is not the case in QCD. We also perform the numerical analysis for the meson mass and condensation in lattice QCD. The lattice QCD data confirm no charged vector meson condensation in a magnetic field.

preprint2013arXiv

Lattice QCD with strong external electric fields

We study particle generation by a strong electric field in lattice QCD. To avoid the sign problem of the Minkowskian electric field, we adopt the "isospin" electric charge. When a strong electric field is applied, the insulating vacuum is broken down and pairs of charged particles are produced by the Schwinger mechanism. The competition against the color confining force is also discussed.

Chiral Magnetic Effect on the Lattice

We review recent progress on the lattice simulations of the chiral magnetic effect. There are two different approaches to analyze the chiral magnetic effect on the lattice. In one approach, the charge density distribution or the current fluctuation is measured under a topological background of the gluon field. In the other approach, the topological effect is mimicked by the chiral chemical potential, and the induced current is directly measured. Both approaches are now developing toward the exact analysis of the chiral magnetic effect.

Quantum Monte Carlo simulation of three-dimensional Bose-Fermi mixtures

Exploratory simulations of Bose-Fermi mixtures on the three-dimensional optical lattice at finite temperature are performed by adopting the lattice quantum chromodynamics technique. We analyze the bosonic superfluid transition and its dependence on the strength of the boson-fermion coupling. The particle densities and the pair occupancies are also studied to understand the effect of the boson-fermion coupling to the microscopic properties of the system. Effect of the induced fermion-fermion interaction by the boson density fluctuation is clearly seen.

Relevant Gluonic Momentum for Confinement and Gauge-Invariant Formalism with Dirac-mode Expansion

We investigate the relevant gluon-momentum region for confinement in lattice QCD on $16^4$ at $β$=5.7, 5.8 and 6.0, based on the Fourier expansion. We find that the string tension $σ$, i.e., the confining force, is almost unchanged even after removing the high-momentum gluon component above 1.5GeV in the Landau gauge. In fact, the confinement property originates from the low-momentum gluon component below 1.5GeV, which is the upper limit to contribute to $σ$. In the relevant region, smaller gluon momentum component is more important for confinement. Next, we develop a manifestly gauge-covariant expansion of the QCD operator such as the Wilson loop, using the eigen-mode of the QCD Dirac operator $γ^μD^μ$. With this method, we perform a direct analysis of the correlation between confinement and chiral symmetry breaking in lattice QCD on $6^4$ at $β$=5.6. As a remarkable fact, the confinement force is almost unchanged even after removing the low-lying Dirac modes, which are responsible to chiral symmetry breaking. This indicates that one-to-one correspondence does not hold for between confinement and chiral symmetry breaking in QCD.

Chiral magnetic effect in lattice QCD with a chiral chemical potential

We perform a first lattice QCD simulation including two-flavor dynamical fermion with a chiral chemical potential. Because the chiral chemical potential gives rise to no sign problem, we can exactly analyze a chirally imbalanced QCD matter by the Monte Carlo simulation. By applying an external magnetic field to this system, we obtain a finite induced current along the magnetic field, which corresponds to the chiral magnetic effect. The obtained induced current is proportional to the magnetic field and to the chiral chemical potential, which is consistent with an analytical prediction.

Four-dimensional Yang-Mills theory with a three-dimensional fermion membrane

We study the four-dimensional Yang-Mills theory in the presence of a three-dimensional membrane of fermions by lattice Monte Carlo simulations. We analyze the phase structure of this theory at finite temperature. Below the phase transition temperature of the pure Yang-Mills theory, we obtain an unconventional phase with spatially-nonuniform vacuum. In this phase, the expectation value of the Polyakov loop is finite on the membrane, and it exponentially decays to zero outside the membrane.

preprint2011arXiv

Lattice QCD simulation at finite chiral chemical potential

Chiral chemical potential does not cause the sign problem in the Monte Carlo simulation of lattice QCD. Using the chiral chemical potential, we study the chiral magnetic effect in two-flavor full QCD. We show that a strong external magnetic field induces an electric current in a chirally imbalanced QCD matter. The qualitative feature of the induced current is consistent with an analytical prediction.

preprint2011arXiv

Lattice study of the chiral magnetic effect in a chirally imbalanced matter

We investigate the chiral magnetic effect by lattice QCD with a chiral chemical potential. In a chirally imbalanced matter, we obtain a finite induced current along an external magnetic field. We analyze the dependence on the lattice spacing, the temperature, the spatial volume, and the fermion mass. The present result indicates that the continuum limit is important for the quantitative argument of the strength of the induced current.

Fourier analysis of the flux-tube distribution in SU(3) lattice QCD

This letter presents a novel analysis of the action/energy density distribution around a static quark-antiquark pair in SU(3) lattice quantum chromodynamics. Using the Fourier transformation of the link variable, we remove the high-momentum gluon and extract the flux-tube component from the action/energy density. When the high-momentum gluon is removed, the statistical fluctuation is drastically suppressed, and the singularities from the quark self-energy disappear. The obtained flux-tube component is broadly distributed around the line connecting the quark and the antiquark.

Lattice QCD Study for Gluon Propagator and Gluon Spectral Function

We study the gluon propagator in the Landau gauge in SU(3) lattice QCD at $β$=5.7, 5.8 and 6.0 at the quenched level. The Euclidean Landau-gauge gluon propagator $D(r)\equiv D_{μμ}^{aa}(x)/24$ is found to be well described by four-dimensional Yukawa-type function $e^{-mr}/r$ in the infrared and intermediate region of $r \equiv (x_μx_μ)^{1/2}$ = 0.1 $\sim$ 1.0fm. The infrared effective gluon mass is obtained as $m \simeq$ 600MeV. Associated with the 4D Yukawa-type gluon propagator, we derive analytical expressions for the zero-spatial-momentum propagator $D_0(t)$, the effective mass $M_{\rm eff}(t)$, and the spectral function $ρ(ω)$ of the gluon field. Remarkably, the obtained gluon spectral function $ρ(ω)$ is almost negative definite, except for a positive $δ$-functional peak at $ω=m$. Since the Yukawa-type propagation indicates a three-dimensional space-time character, we consider a hypothesis of an effective dimensional reduction by generalized Parisi-Sourlas mechanism in a stochastic color-magnetic vacuum of infrared QCD.

QCD Dirac spectrum and components of the gauge field

We analyze the relation between the Dirac spectrum and the gauge field in SU(3) lattice QCD. We focus on how components of the gauge field are related to the Dirac spectrum. First, we consider momentum components of the gauge field. It turns out that the broad region of momentum components is relevant for the low-lying Dirac spectrum and zero modes, i.e., topological charges. The connection with chiral random matrix theory is also discussed. Second, we consider an SU(2) subgroup component of the SU(3) gauge field. The SU(2) subgroup component behaves like the SU(2) gauge field in the low-lying Dirac spectrum.

preprint2010arXiv

Relevant gluonic energy scale of spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking from lattice QCD

We analyze which momentum component of the gluon field induces spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking in lattice QCD. After removing the high-momentum or low-momentum component of the gluon field, we calculate the chiral condensate and observe the roles of these momentum components. The chiral condensate is found to be drastically reduced by removing the zero-momentum gluon. The reduction is about 40% of the total in our calculation condition. The nonzero-momentum infrared gluon also has a sizable contribution to the chiral condensate. From the Banks-Casher relation, this result reflects the nontrivial relation between the infrared gluon and the zero-mode quark.

preprint2010arXiv

Relevant momentum components of gluons for confinement and chiral symmetry breaking

We investigate which momentum components of gluons induce color confinement and spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking in lattice QCD. For this purpose, we formulate a lattice framework to introduce the momentum cutoff of the gluon field. Using this framework, we calculate the quark-antiquark potential, the color flux tube, the chiral condensate, and the Dirac spectrum. Our results suggest that confinement and chiral symmetry breaking are induced by somehow different momentum components of gluons.

Lattice QCD Analysis for Gluons

Nonperturbative properties of gluons are studied in SU(3) lattice QCD at the quenched level. The first subject is a functional-form analysis of the gluon propagator $D_{μν}^{ab}(x)$ in the Landau gauge. We find that the gluon propagator $D_{μμ}^{aa}(r)$ obtained in lattice QCD is well described by the four-dimensional (4D) Yukawa-type function $e^{-mr}/r$ with $m \simeq 600$MeV for the Euclidean 4D distance $r = 0.1 \sim 1.0$ fm. In momentum space, the gluon propagator $\tilde D_{μμ}^{aa}(p^2)$ ($p= 0.5 \sim 3$ GeV) is found to be well approximated with a new-type propagator of $(p^2+m^2)^{-3/2}$, which corresponds to 4D Fourier image of the Yukawa-type function. Associated with the Yukawa-type gluon propagator, we derive analytical expressions for the zero-spatial-momentum propagator $D_0(t)$, the effective mass $M_{\rm eff}(t)$, and the spectral function $ρ(ω)$ of the gluon field. The mass parameter $m$ turns out to be the infrared effective mass of gluons. The obtained gluon spectral function $ρ(ω)$ is almost negative-definite for $ω>m$, except for a positive $δ$-functional peak at $ω=m$. The second subject is a lattice-QCD determination of the relevant gluonic momentum-component for color confinement. As a remarkable fact, the string tension is found to be almost unchanged even after cutting off the high-momentum gluon component above 1.5 GeV in the Landau gauge. In fact, the relevant gluonic scale for color confinement is concluded to be below 1.5 GeV.

preprint2009arXiv

Relevant energy scale of color confinement from lattice QCD

We propose a new lattice framework to extract the relevant gluonic energy scale of QCD phenomena which is based on a "cut" on link variables in momentum space. This framework is expected to be broadly applicable to all lattice QCD calculations. Using this framework, we quantitatively determine the relevant energy scale of color confinement, through the analyses of the quark-antiquark potential and meson masses. The relevant energy scale of color confinement is found to be below 1.5 GeV in the Landau gauge. In fact, the string tension is almost unchanged even after cutting off the high-momentum gluon component above 1.5 GeV. When the relevant low-energy region is cut, the quark-antiquark potential is approximately reduced to a Coulomb-like potential, and each meson becomes a quasi-free quark pair. As an analytical model calculation, we also investigate the dependence of the Richardson potential on the cut, and find the consistent behavior with the lattice result.
