Study of Hadron Masses with Faddeev-Popov Eigenmode Projection in the Coulomb Gauge

Using SU(3) lattice QCD, we investigate role of spatial gluons for hadron masses in the Coulomb gauge, considering the relation between QCD and the quark model. From the Coulomb-gauge configurations at the quenched level on a $16^3 \times 32$ lattice at $β$ = 6.0, we consider the $\vec{A} = 0$ projection, where all the spatial gluon fields are set to zero. In this projection, the inter-quark potential is unchanged. We investigate light hadron masses and find that nucleon and delta baryon masses are almost degenerate. This result suggests that the N-$Δ$ mass difference arises from the color-magnetic interactions, which is consistent with the quark model picture. Next, as a generalization of this projection, we expand spatial gluon fields in terms of Faddeev-Popov eigenmodes and leave only some partial components. We find that the ${\rm N}-Δ$ and $0^{++}-2^{++}$ glueball mass splittings are almost reproduced only with 1 \% low-lying components. This suggests that low-lying color-magnetic interaction leads to the hadron mass splitting.

Gluonic-Excitation Energies and Abelian Dominance in SU(3) QCD

We present the first study of the Abelian-projected gluonic-excitation energies for the static quark-antiquark (Q$\bar{\rm Q}$) system in SU(3) lattice QCD at the quenched level, using a $32^4$ lattice at $β= 6.0$. We investigate ground-state and three excited-state Q$\bar{\rm Q}$ potentials, using smeared link variables on the lattice. We find universal Abelian dominance for the quark confinement force of the excited-state Q$\bar{\rm Q}$ potentials as well as the ground-state potential. Remarkably, in spite of the excitation phenomenon in QCD, we find Abelian dominance for the first gluonic-excitation energy of about 1 GeV at long distances in the maximally Abelian gauge. On the other hand, no Abelian dominance is observed for higher gluonic-excitation energies even at long distances. This suggests that there is some threshold between 1 and 2 GeV for the applicable excitation-energy region of Abelian dominance. Also, we find that Abelian projection significantly reduces the short-distance $1/r$-like behavior in gluonic-excitation energies.

Topological Objects in Holographic QCD

We study topological objects in holographic QCD based on the Sakai-Sugimoto model, which is constructed with $N_c$ D4 branes and $N_f$ D8/$\bar{\rm D8}$ branes in the superstring theory, and is infrared equivalent to 1+3 dimensional massless QCD. Using the gauge/gravity duality, holographic QCD is described as 1+4 dimensional U($N_f$) gauge theory in flavor space with a background gravity, and its instanton solutions correspond to baryons. First, using the Witten Ansatz, we reduce holographic QCD into a 1+2 dimensional Abelian Higgs theory in a curved space and consider its topological aspect. We numerically obtain the Abrikosov vortex solution and investigate single baryon properties. Second, we study a single meron and two merons in holographic QCD. The single meron carrying a half-integer baryon number is found to have a infinite energy also in holographic QCD. We propose a new-type baryon excitation of the two-merons oscillation in the extra-direction of holographic QCD.

Non-perturbative Analysis of Various Mass Generation by Gluonic Dressing Effect with the Schwinger-Dyson Formalism in QCD

As a topic of "quantum color dynamics", we study various mass generation of colored particles and gluonic dressing effect in a non-perturbative manner, using the Schwinger-Dyson (SD) formalism in (scalar) QCD. First, we review dynamical quark-mass generation in QCD in the SD approach as a typical fermion-mass generation via spontaneous chiral-symmetry breaking. Second, using the SD formalism for scalar QCD, we investigate the scalar diquark, a bound-state-like object of two quarks, and its mass generation, which is clearly non-chiral-origin. Here, the scalar diquark is treated as an extended colored scalar field, like a meson in effective hadron models, and its effective size $R$ is introduced as a form factor. As a diagrammatical difference, the SD equation for the scalar diquark has an additional 4-point interaction term, in comparison with the single quark case. The diquark size $R$ is taken to be smaller than a hadron, $R\sim 1$ fm, and larger than a constituent quark, $R\sim 0.3$ fm. We find that the compact diquark with $R\simeq 0.3$ fm has a large effective mass of about 900 MeV, and therefore such a compact diquark is not acceptable in effective models for hadrons. We also consider the artificial removal of 3- and 4-point interaction, respectively, to see the role of each term, and find that the 4-point interaction plays the dominant role of the diquark self-energy. From the above two different cases, quarks and diquarks, we guess that the mass generation of colored particles is a general result of non-perturbative gluonic dressing effect.

Analytical Formulae of the Polyakov and the Wilson Loops with Dirac Eigenmodes in Lattice QCD

We derive an analytical gauge-invariant formula between the Polyakov loop $L_P$ and the Dirac eigenvalues $λ_n$ in QCD, i.e., $L_P \propto \sum_n λ_n^{N_t -1} \langle n|\hat U_4|n \rangle$, in ordinary periodic square lattice QCD with odd-number temporal size $N_t$. Here, $|n\rangle$ denotes the Dirac eigenstate, and $\hat U_4$ temporal link-variable operator. This formula is a Dirac spectral representation of the Polyakov loop in terms of Dirac eigenmodes $|n\rangle$. Because of the factor $λ_n^{N_t -1}$ in the Dirac spectral sum, this formula indicates negligibly small contribution of low-lying Dirac modes to the Polyakov loop in both confinement and deconfinement phases, while these modes are essential for chiral symmetry breaking. Next, we find a similar formula between the Wilson loop and Dirac modes on arbitrary square lattices, without restriction of odd-number size. This formula suggests a small contribution of low-lying Dirac modes to the string tension $σ$, or the confining force. These findings support no crucial role of low-lying Dirac modes for confinement, i.e., no direct one-to-one correspondence between confinement and chiral symmetry breaking in QCD, which seems to be natural because heavy quarks are also confined even without light quarks or the chiral symmetry.

Dirac spectrum representation of Polyakov loop fluctuations in lattice QCD

Dirac spectrum representations of the Polyakov loop fluctuations are derived on the temporally odd-number lattice, where the temporal length is odd with the periodic boundary condition. We investigate the Polyakov loop fluctuations based on these analytical relations. It is semianalytically and numerically found that the low-lying Dirac eigenmodes have little contribution to the Polyakov loop fluctuations, which are sensitive probe for the quark deconfinement. Our results suggest no direct one-to-one corresponding between quark confinement and chiral symmetry breaking in QCD.

Perfect Abelian dominance of confinement in quark-antiquark potential in SU(3) lattice QCD

In the context of the dual superconductor picture for the confinement mechanism, we study maximally Abelian (MA) projection of quark confinement in SU(3) quenched lattice QCD with $32^4$ at $β$=6.4 (i.e., $a \simeq$ 0.058 fm). We investigate the static quark-antiquark potential $V(r)$, its Abelian part $V_{\rm Abel}(r)$ and its off-diagonal part $V_{\rm off}(r)$, respectively, from the on-axis lattice data. As a remarkable fact, we find almost perfect Abelian dominance for quark confinement, i.e., $σ_{\rm Abel} \simeq σ$ for the string tension, on the fine and large-volume lattice. We find also a nontrivial summation relation of $V(r) \simeq V_{\rm Abel}(r) + V_{\rm off}(r)$.

Polyakov loop fluctuations in Dirac eigenmode expansion

We investigate correlations of the Polyakov loop fluctuations with eigenmodes of the lattice Dirac operator. Their analytic relations are derived on the temporally odd-number size lattice with the normal non-twisted periodic boundary condition for the link-variables. We find that the low-lying Dirac modes yield negligible contributions to the Polyakov loop fluctuations. This property is confirmed to be valid in confined and deconfined phase by numerical simulations in SU(3) quenched QCD. These results indicate that there is no direct, one-to-one correspondence between confinement and chiral symmetry breaking in QCD in the context of different properties of the Polyakov loop fluctuation ratios.

The three-quark potential and perfect Abelian dominance in SU(3) lattice QCD

We study the static three-quark (3Q) potential for more than 300 different patterns of 3Q systems with high statistics, i.e., 1000-2000 gauge configurations, in SU(3) lattice QCD at the quenched level. For all the distances, the 3Q potential is found to be well described by the Y-ansatz, i.e., one-gluon-exchange (OGE) Coulomb plus Y-type linear potential. Also, we investigate Abelian projection of quark confinement in the context of the dual superconductor picture proposed by Yoichiro~Nambu~{\it et al.} in SU(3) lattice QCD. Remarkably, quark confinement forces in both Q$\bar{\rm Q}$ and 3Q systems can be described only with Abelian variables in the maximally Abelian gauge, i.e., $σ_{\rm Q \bar Q} \simeq σ_{\rm Q \bar Q}^{\rm Abel} \simeq σ_{\rm 3Q} \simeq σ_{\rm 3Q}^{\rm Abel}$, which we call ``perfect Abelian dominance'' of quark confinement.

Three-quark potential and Abelian dominance of confinement in SU(3) QCD

We study the baryonic three-quark (3Q) potential and its Abelian projection in terms of the dual-superconductor picture in SU(3) quenched lattice QCD. The non-Abelian SU(3) gauge theory is projected onto Abelian U(1)$^2$ gauge theory in the maximal Abelian gauge. We investigate the 3Q potential and its Abelian part for more than 300 different patterns of static 3Q systems in total at $β=5.8$ on $16^332$ and at $β=6.0$ on $20^332$ with 1000-2000 gauge configurations. For all the distances, both the 3Q potential and Abelian part are found to be well described by the Y ansatz, i.e., two-body Coulomb term plus three-body Y-type linear term $σ_{3\mathrm{Q}} L_{\mathrm{min}}$, where $L_{\mathrm{min}}$ is the minimum flux-tube length connecting the three quarks. We find equivalence between the three-body string tension $σ_{3\mathrm{Q}}$ and its Abelian part $σ_{3\mathrm{Q}}^{\rm Abel}$ with an accuracy within a few percent deviation, i.e., $σ_{3\mathrm{Q}} \simeq σ_{3\mathrm{Q}}^{\rm Abel}$, which means Abelian dominance of the quark-confining force in 3Q systems.

A non-perturbative effect of gluons for scalar diquark in the Schwinger-Dyson formalism

The diquark has been considered to be important effective degrees of freedom in hadron physics, especially for multi-quark physics and the structure of heavy hadronic states. Using the Schwinger-Dyson formalism, we investigate the non-perturbative effect of gluons for scalar diquarks with renormalization-group improved coupling in the Landau gauge. Here, we treat the scalar diquark as an effective degree of freedom with a peculiar size, while the diquark is originally a bound-state-like object of two quarks. Since the diquark has a non-zero color charge, it strongly interacts with gluons. We evaluate the gluonic non-perturbative effect to the diquark, considering the size effect of the diquark. We investigate the mass function of the diquark in both cases with a constant bare diquark mass and twice of the running quark self-energy. It is found that the diquark, especially the small diquark, obtains a large effective mass by the gluonic dressing effect. The scalar diquark mass seems to be dynamically generated by the non-perturbative effect, although it does not have the chiral symmetry.

Analytical relation between confinement and chiral symmetry breaking in terms of Polyakov loop and Dirac eigenmodes in odd-number lattice QCD

In lattice QCD formalism, we derive an analytical gauge-invariant relation between the Polyakov loop $\langle L_P \rangle$ and the Dirac eigenvalues $λ_n$ in QCD, i.e., $\langle L_P \rangle \propto \sum_n λ_n^{N_t -1} \langle n|\hat U_4|n \rangle$, by considering ${\rm Tr} (\hat{U}_4\hat{\not{D}}^{N_t-1})$ on a temporally odd-number lattice, where the temporal lattice size $N_t$ is odd. This formula is a Dirac spectral representation of the Polyakov loop in terms of Dirac eigenmodes $|n\rangle$. We here use an ordinary square lattice with the normal (nontwisted) periodic boundary condition for link-variables $U_μ(s)$ in the temporal direction. From this relation, one can estimate each contribution of the Dirac eigenmode to the Polyakov loop. Because of the factor $λ_n^{N_t -1}$ in the Dirac spectral sum, this analytical relation generally indicates quite small contribution of low-lying Dirac modes to the Polyakov loop in both confined and deconfined phases, while the low-lying Dirac modes are essential for chiral symmetry breaking. Also in lattice QCD calculations in confined and deconfined phases, we numerically confirm the analytical relation, non-zero finiteness of $\langle n|\hat U_4|n \rangle$ for each Dirac mode, and negligibly small contribution of low-lying Dirac modes to the Polyakov loop, i.e., the Polyakov loop is almost unchanged even by removing low-lying Dirac-mode contribution from the QCD vacuum generated by lattice QCD simulations. Thus, we conclude that low-lying Dirac modes are not essential modes for confinement, which indicates no direct one-to-one correspondence between confinement and chiral symmetry breaking in QCD.

Analytical Relation between Quark Confinement and Chiral Symmetry Breaking in QCD

We study the relation between quark confinement and spontaneous chiral-symmetry breaking directly in QCD. In lattice QCD formalism, we derive an analytical gauge-invariant relation between the Polyakov loop $\langle L_P \rangle$ and the Dirac eigenvalues $λ_n$, i.e., $\langle L_P \rangle \propto \sum_n λ_n^{N_t -1} \langle n|\hat U_4|n \rangle$, on a temporally odd-number lattice, where the temporal lattice size $N_t$ is odd. Here, $|n \rangle$ denotes the Dirac eigenmode, i.e., $\not D|n \rangle=iλ_n|n \rangle$, and $\hat U_4$ the temporal link-variable operator. We here use an ordinary square lattice with the normal periodic boundary condition for link-variables $U_μ(s)$ in the temporal direction. Because of the factor $λ_n^{N_t -1}$ in the analytical relation, the contribution of low-lying Dirac modes to the Polyakov loop is negligibly small in both confined and deconfined phases, while the low-lying Dirac modes are essential for chiral symmetry breaking. Also, in lattice QCD simulations, we numerically confirm the analytical relation, non-zero finiteness of $\langle n|\hat U_4|n \rangle$ for each Dirac mode, and negligibly small contribution of low-lying Dirac modes to the Polyakov loop. Thus, we conclude that low-lying Dirac modes are not essential for confinement, which indicates no direct one-to-one correspondence between confinement and chiral symmetry breaking in QCD.

Lattice QCD analysis for relation between quark confinement and chiral symmetry breaking

The Polyakov loop and the Dirac modes are connected via a simple analytical relation on the temporally odd-number lattice, where the temporal lattice size is odd with the normal (nontwisted) periodic boundary condition. Using this relation, we investigate the relation between quark confinement and chiral symmetry breaking in QCD. In this paper, we discuss the properties of this analytical relation and numerically investigate each Dirac-mode contribution to the Polyakov loop in both confinement and deconfinement phases at the quenched level. This relation indicates that low-lying Dirac modes have little contribution to the Polyakov loop, and we numerically confirmed this fact. From our analysis, it is suggested that there is no direct one-to-one corresponding between quark confinement and chiral symmetry breaking in QCD. Also, in the confinement phase, we numerically find that there is a new "positive/negative symmetry" in the Dirac-mode matrix elements of link-variable operator which appear in the relation and the Polyakov loop becomes zero because of this symmetry. In the deconfinement phase, this symmetry is broken and the Polyakov loop is non-zero.

Lattice QCD analysis of the Polyakov loop in terms of Dirac eigenmodes

Using the Dirac-mode expansion method, which keeps the gauge invariance, we analyze the Polyakov loop in terms of the Dirac modes in SU(3) quenched lattice QCD in both confined and deconfined phases. First, to investigate the direct correspondence between confinement and chiral symmetry breaking, we remove low-lying Dirac-modes from the confined vacuum generated by lattice QCD. In this system without low-lying Dirac modes, while the chiral condensate $\langle \bar{q} q\rangle$ is extremely reduced, we find that the Polyakov loop is almost zero and $Z_3$-center symmetry is unbroken, which indicates quark confinement. We also investigate the removal of ultraviolet (UV) Dirac-modes, and find that the Polyakov loop is almost zero. Second, we deal with the deconfined phase above $T_c$, and find that the behaviors of the Polyakov loop and $Z_3$-symmetry are not changed without low-lying or UV Dirac-modes. Finally, we develop a new method to remove low-lying Dirac modes from the Polyakov loop for a larger lattice of $12^3 \times 4$ at finite temperature, and find almost the same results. These results suggest that each eigenmode has the information of confinement, i.e., the "seed" of confinement is distributed in a wider region of the Dirac eigenmodes unlike chiral symmetry breaking, and there is no direct correspondence between confinement and chiral symmetry breaking through Dirac-eigenmodes.

Lattice QCD study for relation between confinement and chiral symmetry breaking on temporally odd-number lattice

We investigate the contribution from each Dirac modes to the Polyakov loop based on a gauge-invariant analytical relation connecting the Polyakov loop and the Dirac modes on a temporally odd-number lattice, where the temporal lattice size is odd, with the normal (nontwisted) periodic boundary condition. The dumping factor in the relation plays crucial role for the negligible contribution of low-lying Dirac modes to the Polyakov loop. The zero-value of the Polyakov loop in the confinement phase is due to the ``positive/negative symmetry'' of the Dirac-mode contribution to the Polyakov loop. In the deconfinement phase, there is no such symmetry.

Perfect Abelian dominance of quark confinement in SU(3) QCD

We study the Abelian projection of quark confinement in SU(3) quenched lattice QCD, in terms of the dual superconductor picture. In the maximal Abelian gauge, we perform the Cartan decomposition of the non-Abelian gauge field on a $32^4$ lattice with spacing $a \simeq0.058, 0.10$ fm (i.e., $β=6.4, 6.0$), and investigate the interquark potential $V(r)$, the Abelian part $V_{\mathrm{Abel}}(r)$, and the off-diagonal part $V_{\mathrm{off}}(r)$. For the potential analysis, we use both on-axis data and several types of off-axis data, with larger numbers of gauge configurations. Remarkably, we find almost perfect Abelian dominance of the string tension (quark-confining force) on the large-volume lattice. Also, we find a simple but nontrivial relation of $V(r) \simeq V_{\mathrm{Abel}}(r) + V_{\mathrm{off}}(r)$.

Quark scalar, axial, and pseudoscalar charges in the Schwinger-Dyson formalism

We calculate the scalar, axial, and pseudoscalar charges of the quark in the Schwinger-Dyson formalism of Landau gauge QCD. It is found that the dressed quark scalar density of the valence quark is significantly enhanced against the bare quark contribution, and the result explains qualitatively the phenomenologically known value of the pion-nucleon sigma term and also that given by lattice QCD. Moreover, we show that the Richardson's interquark potential suppresses the quark scalar density in the Higashjima-Miransky approximation. This fact suggests that the quark scalar density is an observable that is sensitive to quark confinement. For the quark axial charge, we find that it is suppressed due to the gluon dynamics. The result of the quenched analysis agrees qualitatively with the experimental data of the isovector axial coupling constant $g_A$. We show that the suppression of the quenched axial charge is due to a mechanism similar to that of the quark tensor charge. In the Schwinger-Dyson equation with the leading unquenching quark-loop contribution the quark axial charge is more suppressed, due to the anomaly effect. The quark pseudoscalar density is found to be large, and is divergent as the bare quark becomes massless. This result is in agreement with the phenomenological current algebraic analysis, and explains well the dominance of the pion-pole contribution.

Quark tensor and axial charges within the Schwinger-Dyson formalism

We calculate the tensor and axial charges of the quark in the Schwinger-Dyson formalism of Landau gauge QCD. It is found that the dressed tensor and isovector axial charges of the quark are suppressed against the bare quark contribution, and the result agrees qualitatively with the experimental data. We show that this is due to the superposition of the spin flip of the quark arising from the successive emission of gluons which dress the vertex. For the isoscalar quark axial charge, we have analyzed the Schwinger-Dyson equation by including the leading unquenching quark-loop effect. It is found that the suppression is more significant, due to the axial anomaly effect.

Quark tensor charge and electric dipole moment within the Schwinger-Dyson formalism

We calculate the tensor charge of the quark in the QCD-like theory in the Landau gauge using the Schwinger-Dyson formalism. It is found that the dressed tensor charge of the quark is significantly suppressed against the bare quark contribution, and the result agrees qualitatively with the analyses in the collinear factorization approach and lattice QCD. We also analyze the quark confinement effect with the phenomenological strong coupling given by Richardson, and find that this contribution is small. We show that the suppression of the quark tensor charge is due to the superposition of the spin flip of the quark arising from the successive emission of gluons which dress the tensor vertex. We also consider the relation between the quark and the nucleon electric dipole moments by combining with the simple constituent quark model.

Relation between Confinement and Chiral Symmetry Breaking in Temporally Odd-number Lattice QCD

In the lattice QCD formalism, we investigate the relation between confinement and chiral symmetry breaking. A gauge-invariant analytical relation connecting the Polyakov loop and the Dirac modes is derived on a temporally odd-number lattice, where the temporal lattice size is odd, with the normal (nontwisted) periodic boundary condition for link-variables. This analytical relation indicates that low-lying Dirac modes have little contribution to the Polyakov loop, and it is numerically confirmed at the quenched level in both confinement and deconfinement phases. This fact indicates no direct one-to-one correspondence between confinement and chiral symmetry breaking in QCD. Using the relation, we also investigate the contribution from each Dirac mode to the Polyakov loop. In the confinement phase, we find a new "positive/negative symmetry" of the Dirac-mode matrix element of the link-variable operator, and this symmetry leads to the zero value of the Polyakov loop. In the deconfinement phase, there is no such symmetry and the Polyakov loop is nonzero. Also, we develop a new method for spin-diagonalizing the Dirac operator on the temporally odd-number lattice modifying the Kogut-Susskind formalism.

Analytical relation between quark confinement and chiral symmetry breaking in odd-number lattice QCD

To clarify the relation between confinement and chiral symmetry breaking in QCD, we consider a temporally odd-number lattice, with the temporal lattice size $N_t$ being odd. We here use an ordinary square lattice with the normal (nontwisted) periodic boundary condition for link-variables in the temporal direction. By considering ${\rm Tr} (\hat{U}_4\hat{\not D}^{N_t-1})$, we analytically derive a gauge-invariant relation between the Polyakov loop $\langle L_P \rangle$ and the Dirac eigenvalues $λ_n$ in QCD, i.e., $\langle L_P \rangle \propto \sum_n λ_n^{N_t -1} \langle n|\hat U_4|n \rangle$, which is a Dirac spectral representation of the Polyakov loop in terms of Dirac eigenmodes $|n\rangle$. Owing to the factor $λ_n^{N_t -1}$ in the Dirac spectral sum, this relation generally indicates fairly small contribution of low-lying Dirac modes to the Polyakov loop, while the low-lying Dirac modes are essential for chiral symmetry breaking. Also in lattice QCD calculations in both confined and deconfined phases, we numerically confirm the analytical relation, non-zero finiteness of $\langle n|\hat U_4|n \rangle$ for each Dirac mode, and negligibly small contribution from low-lying Dirac modes to the Polyakov loop, i.e., the Polyakov loop is almost unchanged even by removing low-lying Dirac-mode contribution from the QCD vacuum generated by lattice QCD simulations. Gluon Propagators in Maximally Abelian Gauge in SU(3) Lattice QCD

In SU(3) lattice QCD, we study diagonal and off-diagonal gluon propagators in the maximally Abelian (MA) gauge with U(1)$_3 \timesU(1)_8$ Landau gauge fixing. These propagators are studied both in the coordinate space and in the momentum space. The Monte Carlo simulation is performed on $16^4$ at $β$=6.0 and $32^4$ at $β$=5.8 and 6.0 at the quenched level. In the four-dimensional Euclidean space-time, the effective mass of diagonal gluons is estimated as $M_{\mathrm{diag}} \simeq 0.3\mathrm{GeV}$ and that of off-diagonal gluons as $M_{\mathrm{off}} \simeq 1\mathrm{GeV}$ in the region of $r =0.4-1.0$fm. In the momentum space, the effective mass of diagonal gluons is estimated as $M_{\mathrm{diag}} \simeq 0.3\mathrm{GeV}$ and that of off-diagonal gluons as $M_{\mathrm{off}} \simeq 1\mathrm{GeV}$ in the region of $p <1.1$GeV. The off-diagonal gluon propagator is relatively suppressed in the infrared region and seems to be finite at zero momentum, while the diagonal gluon propagator is enhanced. Furthermore, we also study the functional form of these propagators in momentum space. These propagators are well fitted by $Z/(p^2+m^2)^ν$ with fit parameters, $Z, m$ and $ν$ in the region of $p <3.0$GeV. From the fit results and lattice calculations, all of the spectral functions of diagonal and off-diagonal gluons would have negative regions.

Lattice QCD study for stringy excitation and role of UV gluons

In both cases of quark-antiquark (Q-Qbar) and three-quark (3Q) systems, we study ground-state and low-lying excited-state potentials in terms of the gluon-momentum component in the Coulomb gauge in SU(3) quenched lattice QCD. By introducing UV-cut in the gluon-momentum space, we investigate the "UV-gluon sensitivity" of the ground-state and excited-state potentials quantitatively. Such a non-quark-origin excitation is a purely gluonic excitation, which can be interpreted as a stringy excitation in the color flux-tube picture of hadrons. For both Q-Qbar and 3Q systems, the IR part of the ground-state potential is almost unchanged, even after cutting off high-momentum gluon component. On the other hand, we find more significant change of excited-state potential by the cut of UV-gluons. However, even after the removal of UV-gluons, the magnitude of the low-lying gluonic excitation remains to be of the order of 1GeV.

Lattice QCD study of confinement and chiral symmetry breaking with Dirac-mode expansion

Using the eigen-mode of the QCD Dirac operator $\Slash D=γ^μD^μ$, we develop a manifestly gauge-covariant expansion and projection of the QCD operators such as the Wilson loop and the Polyakov loop. With this method, we perform a direct analysis of the correlation between confinement and chiral symmetry breaking in lattice QCD Monte Carlo calculations. Even after removing the low-lying Dirac modes, which are responsible to chiral symmetry breaking, we find that the Wilson loop obeys the area law, and the string tension or the confinement force is almost unchanged. We find also that the Polyakov loop remains to be almost zero even without the low-lying Dirac modes, which indicates the Z_3-unbroken confinement phase. These results indicate that one-to-one correspondence does not hold between confinement and chiral symmetry breaking in QCD.

Polyakov loop analysis with Dirac-mode expansion

In order to investigate the direct relation between confinement and chiral symmetry breaking in QCD, we investigate the Polyakov loop in terms of the Dirac eigenmodes in both confined and deconfined phases. Using the Dirac-mode expansion method in SU(3) lattice QCD, we analyze the contribution of low-lying and higher Dirac-modes to the Polyakov loop, respectively. In the confined phase below T_c, after removing low-lying Dirac-modes, the chiral condensate $< \bar{q} q>$ is largely reduced, however, the Polyakov loop remains almost zero and Z_3-center symmetry is unbroken. These results indicate that the system is still in the confined phase without low-lying Dirac-modes. By higher Dirac-modes cut, the Polyakov loop also remains almost zero below T_c. We also analyze the Polyakov loop in the deconfined phase above T_c. We find that the Polyakov loop and Z_3-symmetry behavior are insensitive to low-lying and higher Dirac-modes in both confined and deconfined phases.

To calculate the propagators, we adopt a method to extract gauge fields from link-variables analytically in the SU(3) case. The off-diagonal gluons behave as massive vector bosons with the approximate effective mass $M_{\rm off} \simeq 1.1 - 1.2 {\rm GeV}$ in the region of $r = 0.3 - 0.8 {\rm fm}$, and the propagation is limited within a short range. On the other hand, the diagonal gluons behave as light vector bosons with $M_{\rm diag}\simeq 0.3 {\rm GeV} $ and the propagation of diagonal gluons remains even in a large range. In this way, infrared Abelian dominance is shown in terms of short-range propagation of off-diagonal gluons. Furthermore, we investigate the functional form of the off-diagonal gluon propagator. The functional form is well described by the four-dimensional Euclidean Yukawa-type function ${\rm exp}(-m_{\rm off} r)/r$ with $m_{\rm off} = 1.3 -1.4 {\rm GeV}$ for $r = 0.1- 0.8{\rm fm}$. This also indicates that the spectral function of off-diagonal gluons has the negative-value region.

Analytical derivation of gauge fields from link variables in SU(3) lattice QCD and its application in maximally Abelian gauge

In SU(3) lattice QCD, we improve a method to extract gauge fields from link variables analytically. With this method, we perform the first study on the effective mass generation of off-diagonal gluons and infrared Abelian dominance in the maximally Abelian (MA) gauge in the SU(3) case. We investigate the propagator and the effective mass of the off-diagonal gluon field in the MA gauge with ${\rm U(1)}_3 \times {\rm U(1)}_8$ Landau gauge fixing in SU(3) quenched lattice QCD on $16^4$ at $β$=5.7, 5.8 and 6.0. The off-diagonal gluon component behaves as a massive vector boson with the approximate effective mass $M_{\rm off} = 1.1 - 1.2 {\rm GeV}$ in the region of $r = 0.3 - 0.8 {\rm fm}$, and its propagation is limited within a short range. We thus show the origin of infrared Abelian dominance in terms of short-range propagation of off-diagonal gluons. We also investigate the functional form of the off-diagonal gluon propagator. We find that the functional form is well described by the four-dimensional Euclidean Yukawa-type function ${\rm exp}\{-m_{\rm off} r\}/r$ with $m_{\rm off} = 1.3 -1.4 {\rm GeV}$ for $r = 0.1- 0.8{\rm fm}$. This also indicates that the spectral function has a negative region.

Dirac-mode expansion analysis for Polyakov loop

To clarify the relation between chiral symmetry breaking and color confinement, we investigate the Polyakov loop in terms of the Dirac eigenmodes in SU(3) lattice QCD. We analyze the low-lying (IR) and UV Dirac-mode contribution to the Polyakov loop, respectively, using the Dirac-mode expansion method. In the confined phase, the Polyakov loop $< L_P >$ remains almost zero and $Z_3$ center symmetry is thus unbroken, even after removing low-lying Dirac-modes, which are responsible to chiral symmetry breaking. In the confined phase, the Polyakov loop $< L_P >$ also remains almost zero by UV Dirac-modes cut. In addition to the confined phase, we analyze the Polyakov loop in the deconfined phase and its temperature dependence. The behavior of the Polyakov loop $< L_P >$ is found to be almost unchanged by the cut of low-lying or UV Dirac-modes in both confined and deconfined phases.

Gauge-Invariant Formalism with a Dirac-mode Expansion for Confinement and Chiral Symmetry Breaking

Using the eigen-mode of the QCD Dirac operator $\Slash D=γ^μD^μ$, we develop a manifestly gauge-covariant expansion and projection of the QCD operators such as the Wilson loop and the Polyakov loop. With this method, we perform a direct analysis of the correlation between confinement and chiral symmetry breaking in lattice QCD Monte Carlo calculation on $6^4$ at $β$=5.6. Even after removing the low-lying Dirac modes, which are responsible to chiral symmetry breaking, we find that the Wilson loop obeys the area law, and the slope parameter corresponding to the string tension or the confinement force is almost unchanged. We find also that the Polyakov loop remains to be almost zero even without the low-lying Dirac modes, which indicates the $Z_3$-unbroken confinement phase. These results indicate that one-to-one correspondence does not hold for between confinement and chiral symmetry breaking in QCD.

Lattice QCD analysis for Faddeev-Popov eigenmodes in terms of gluonic momentum components in the Coulomb gauge

We analyze the relation between Faddeev-Popov eigenmodes and gluon-momentum components in the Coulomb gauge using SU(3) lattice QCD. In the Coulomb gauge, the color-Coulomb energy is largely enhanced by near-zero Faddeev-Popov eigenmodes, which would lead to the confining potential. By the ultraviolet-momentum gluon cut, the color-Coulomb energy and the Faddeev-Popov spectrum are almost unchanged. In contrast to the ultraviolet insensitivity, the color-Coulomb energy and the Faddeev-Popov eigenmodes drastically change by infrared-momentum gluon cut. Without infrared gluons, the color-Coulomb energy tends to become non-confining, and near-zero Faddeev-Popov eigenmodes vanish. We also investigate the full FP eigenmodes, and find that infrared gluons widely influence both high and low Faddeev-Popov eigenmodes.

Off-diagonal Gluon Mass Generation and Infrared Abelian Dominance in Maximally Abelian Gauge in SU(3) Lattice QCD

With this method, we perform the first study on effective mass generation of off-diagonal gluons and infrared Abelian dominance in the maximally Abelian (MA) gauge in the SU(3) case. Using SU(3) lattice QCD, we investigate the propagator and the effective mass of the gluon fields in the MA gauge with U(1)$_3 \timesU(1)_8$ Landau gauge fixing. The Monte Carlo simulation is performed on $16^4$ at $β$=5.7, 5.8 and 6.0 at the quenched level. The off-diagonal gluons behave as massive vector bosons with the approximate effective mass $M_{\mathrm{off}} \simeq 1.1-1.2\mathrm{GeV}$ in the region of $r =0.3-0.8$fm, and the propagation is limited within a short range, while the propagation of diagonal gluons remains even in a large range. In this way, infrared Abelian dominance is shown in terms of short-range propagation of off-diagonal gluons. Furthermore, we investigate the functional form of the off-diagonal gluon propagator. The functional form is well described by the four-dimensional Euclidean Yukawa-type function $e^{-m_{\rm off}r}/r$ with $m_{\rm off} \simeq 1.3-1.4\mathrm{GeV}$ for $r = 0.1- 0.8$ fm. This also indicates that the spectral function of off-diagonal gluons has the negative-value region.

Relevant Gluonic Momentum for Confinement and Gauge-Invariant Formalism with Dirac-mode Expansion

We investigate the relevant gluon-momentum region for confinement in lattice QCD on $16^4$ at $β$=5.7, 5.8 and 6.0, based on the Fourier expansion. We find that the string tension $σ$, i.e., the confining force, is almost unchanged even after removing the high-momentum gluon component above 1.5GeV in the Landau gauge. In fact, the confinement property originates from the low-momentum gluon component below 1.5GeV, which is the upper limit to contribute to $σ$. In the relevant region, smaller gluon momentum component is more important for confinement. Next, we develop a manifestly gauge-covariant expansion of the QCD operator such as the Wilson loop, using the eigen-mode of the QCD Dirac operator $γ^μD^μ$. With this method, we perform a direct analysis of the correlation between confinement and chiral symmetry breaking in lattice QCD on $6^4$ at $β$=5.6. As a remarkable fact, the confinement force is almost unchanged even after removing the low-lying Dirac modes, which are responsible to chiral symmetry breaking. This indicates that one-to-one correspondence does not hold for between confinement and chiral symmetry breaking in QCD.

Stringy excitation and role of UV gluons in lattice QCD

Using SU(3) quenched lattice QCD, we study ground-state and low-lying even-parity excited-state potentials of quark-antiquark systems in terms of the gluon-momentum component in the Coulomb gauge. By introducing UV-cut in the gluon-momentum space, we investigate the "UV-gluon sensitivity" of the ground-state and excited-state potentials and the stringy excitation quantitatively. Even after cutting off high-momentum gluon component above 1.5GeV, the IR part of the ground-state potential is almost unchanged. On the other hand, the change of excited-state potential is more significant by the cut of UV-gluons. However, even after the removal of UV-gluons, the magnitude of the low-lying gluonic excitation remains to be of the order of 1GeV.

Fast vacuum decay into particle pairs in strong electric and magnetic fields

We discuss fermion pair productions in strong electric and magnetic fields. We point out that, in the case of massless fermions, the vacuum persistency probability per unit time and volume is zero in the strong electric and magnetic fields, while it is finite when the magnetic field is absent. The contribution from the lowest Landau level (LLL) dominates this phenomenon. We also discuss dynamics of the vacuum decay, using an effective theory of the LLL projection, taking into account the back reaction.

Fast Vacuum Decay into Quark Pairs in Strong Color Electric and Magnetic Fields

We study quark-pair creations in strong color electromagnetic fields. We point out that, for massless quarks, the vacuum persistency probability per unit space-time volume is zero, i.e., the quark-pair creation rate w is infinite, in general homogeneous color electromagnetic fields, while it is finite when the color magnetic field is absent. We find that the contribution from the lowest Landau level (LLL) dominates this phenomenon. With an effective theory of the LLL projection, we also discuss dynamics of the vacuum decay, taking into account the back reaction of pair creations.

Instantaneous interquark potential in generalized Landau gauge in SU(3) lattice QCD: a possible gauge for the quark potential model

We investigate "instantaneous interquark potential", an interesting gauge-dependent quantity defined from the spatial correlator $<\mathrm{Tr} [U_4^\dagger(s)U_4(s')]>$ of the temporal link-variable $U_4$, in detail in generalized Landau gauge using SU(3) quenched lattice QCD. While the instantaneous potential has no linear part in the Landau gauge, in the Coulomb gauge, it is expressed by the Coulomb plus linear potential, where the slope is 2-3 times larger than the physical string tension, and the lowest energy state is considered to be a gluon-chain state. Using the generalized Landau gauge, we find that the instantaneous potential can be continuously described between the Landau and the Coulomb gauges, and it approximately reproduces the physical interquark potential in a specific intermediate gauge, which we call "$λ_C$-gauge". This $λ_C$-gauge is expected to provide a quark-potential-model picture, where dynamical gluons do not appear. We also investigate $T$-length terminated Polyakov-line correlator and its corresponding "finite-time potential" in generalized Landau gauge.

Lattice QCD analysis for instantaneous interquark potential in generalized Landau gauge

Using generalized Landau gauge, we study the continuous change of gluon properties from the Landau gauge toward the Coulomb gauge in SU(3) lattice QCD. We investigate "instantaneous interquark potential", which is defined by the spatial correlation of the temporal link-variable $U_4$ and is an interesting gauge-dependent concept. In the Coulomb gauge, the instantaneous potential is expressed by the Coulomb plus linear potential, where the slope is, however, 2-3 times as large as the physical string tension. In the Landau gauge, the instantaneous potential has no linear part. We find that the linear part is continuously growing by varying gauge from the Landau gauge toward the Coulomb gauge. We also find that the instantaneous potential approximately reproduces the physical interquark potential in a specific intermediate gauge, $λ_C$-gauge. This $λ_C$-gauge is expected to be a useful gauge for modeling effective theories such as the quark potential model.

Lattice QCD Study for Gluon Propagator and Gluon Spectral Function

We study the gluon propagator in the Landau gauge in SU(3) lattice QCD at $β$=5.7, 5.8 and 6.0 at the quenched level. The Euclidean Landau-gauge gluon propagator $D(r)\equiv D_{μμ}^{aa}(x)/24$ is found to be well described by four-dimensional Yukawa-type function $e^{-mr}/r$ in the infrared and intermediate region of $r \equiv (x_μx_μ)^{1/2}$ = 0.1 $\sim$ 1.0fm. The infrared effective gluon mass is obtained as $m \simeq$ 600MeV. Associated with the 4D Yukawa-type gluon propagator, we derive analytical expressions for the zero-spatial-momentum propagator $D_0(t)$, the effective mass $M_{\rm eff}(t)$, and the spectral function $ρ(ω)$ of the gluon field. Remarkably, the obtained gluon spectral function $ρ(ω)$ is almost negative definite, except for a positive $δ$-functional peak at $ω=m$. Since the Yukawa-type propagation indicates a three-dimensional space-time character, we consider a hypothesis of an effective dimensional reduction by generalized Parisi-Sourlas mechanism in a stochastic color-magnetic vacuum of infrared QCD.

Relevant gluonic energy scale of spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking from lattice QCD

We analyze which momentum component of the gluon field induces spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking in lattice QCD. After removing the high-momentum or low-momentum component of the gluon field, we calculate the chiral condensate and observe the roles of these momentum components. The chiral condensate is found to be drastically reduced by removing the zero-momentum gluon. The reduction is about 40% of the total in our calculation condition. The nonzero-momentum infrared gluon also has a sizable contribution to the chiral condensate. From the Banks-Casher relation, this result reflects the nontrivial relation between the infrared gluon and the zero-mode quark.

Relevant momentum components of gluons for confinement and chiral symmetry breaking

We investigate which momentum components of gluons induce color confinement and spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking in lattice QCD. For this purpose, we formulate a lattice framework to introduce the momentum cutoff of the gluon field. Using this framework, we calculate the quark-antiquark potential, the color flux tube, the chiral condensate, and the Dirac spectrum. Our results suggest that confinement and chiral symmetry breaking are induced by somehow different momentum components of gluons.

Lattice QCD Analysis for Gluons

Nonperturbative properties of gluons are studied in SU(3) lattice QCD at the quenched level. The first subject is a functional-form analysis of the gluon propagator $D_{μν}^{ab}(x)$ in the Landau gauge. We find that the gluon propagator $D_{μμ}^{aa}(r)$ obtained in lattice QCD is well described by the four-dimensional (4D) Yukawa-type function $e^{-mr}/r$ with $m \simeq 600$MeV for the Euclidean 4D distance $r = 0.1 \sim 1.0$ fm. In momentum space, the gluon propagator $\tilde D_{μμ}^{aa}(p^2)$ ($p= 0.5 \sim 3$ GeV) is found to be well approximated with a new-type propagator of $(p^2+m^2)^{-3/2}$, which corresponds to 4D Fourier image of the Yukawa-type function. Associated with the Yukawa-type gluon propagator, we derive analytical expressions for the zero-spatial-momentum propagator $D_0(t)$, the effective mass $M_{\rm eff}(t)$, and the spectral function $ρ(ω)$ of the gluon field. The mass parameter $m$ turns out to be the infrared effective mass of gluons. The obtained gluon spectral function $ρ(ω)$ is almost negative-definite for $ω>m$, except for a positive $δ$-functional peak at $ω=m$. The second subject is a lattice-QCD determination of the relevant gluonic momentum-component for color confinement. As a remarkable fact, the string tension is found to be almost unchanged even after cutting off the high-momentum gluon component above 1.5 GeV in the Landau gauge. In fact, the relevant gluonic scale for color confinement is concluded to be below 1.5 GeV.

Relevant energy scale of color confinement from lattice QCD

We propose a new lattice framework to extract the relevant gluonic energy scale of QCD phenomena which is based on a "cut" on link variables in momentum space. This framework is expected to be broadly applicable to all lattice QCD calculations. Using this framework, we quantitatively determine the relevant energy scale of color confinement, through the analyses of the quark-antiquark potential and meson masses. The relevant energy scale of color confinement is found to be below 1.5 GeV in the Landau gauge. In fact, the string tension is almost unchanged even after cutting off the high-momentum gluon component above 1.5 GeV. When the relevant low-energy region is cut, the quark-antiquark potential is approximately reduced to a Coulomb-like potential, and each meson becomes a quasi-free quark pair. As an analytical model calculation, we also investigate the dependence of the Richardson potential on the cut, and find the consistent behavior with the lattice result.

In large-$N_c$ holographic QCD, the baryon appears as a topologically non-trivial chiral soliton, which is called ``brane-induced Skyrmion''. We also analyze the features of the baryonic matter in holographic QCD by investigating the system of single brane-induced Skyrmion on a three-dimensional closed manifold $S^3$. Role of Large Gluonic Excitation Energy for Narrow Width of Penta-Quark Baryons in QCD String Theory

We study the narrow decay width of low-lying penta-quark baryons in the QCD string theoryin terms of gluonic excitations. In the QCD string theory, the penta-quark baryon decays via a gluonic-excited state of a baryon and meson system, where a pair of Y-shaped junction and anti-junction is created. Since lattice QCD shows that the lowest gluonic-excitation energy takes a large value of about 1 GeV, the decay of the penta-quark baryon near the threshold is considered as a quantum tunneling process via a highly-excited state (a gluonic-excited state) in the QCD string theory. This mechanism strongly suppresses the decay and leads to an extremely narrow decay width of the penta-quark system.

Dual Higgs Mechanism based on the Dual Gauge Formalism in the Lattice QCD

We study the dual Higgs mechanism induced by monopole condensation based on the dual gauge formalism in the maximally abelian (MA) gauge in the lattice QCD. To examine ``monopole condensation'' in QCD, we study the monopole part or the monopole-current system appearing in the MA gauge by extracting the dual gluon field $B_μ$. First, we investigate the inter-monopole potential using the dual Wilson loop in the lattice QCD simulation. In the monopole part in the MA gauge, the inter-monopole potential is found to be flat, and can be fitted as the Yukawa potential in the infrared region. From more detailed analysis of the inter-monopole potential considering the monopole size, we estimate the effective dual-gluon mass $m_B \simeq 0.5$GeV and the effective monopole size $R_{^{_{\rm M}}} \simeq 0.2$fm. Second, we study the dual gluon propagator $G^D_{μν}(x-y) \equiv < B_μ(x) B_ν(y) >_{\rm MA}$ in the MA gauge, and find that $G^D_{μμ}$ behaves as the massive vector-boson propagator with $m_B \simeq 0.4$ GeV in the infrared region. The effective-mass acquirement of the dual gluon field $B_μ$ at the long distance can be regarded as the lattice QCD evidence of ``infrared monopole condensation'' in the MA gauge.

Flux-Tube Ring and Glueball Properties in the Dual Ginzburg-Landau Theory

An intuitive approach to the glueball using the flux-tube ring solution in the dual Ginzburg-Landau theory is presented. The description of the flux-tube ring as the relativistic closed string with the effective string tension enables us to write the hamiltonian of the flux-tube ring using the Nambu-Goto action. Analyzing the Schrödinger equation, we discuss the mass spectrum and the wave function of the glueball. It is concluded that the annihilation process of two flux-tubes can contribute to the QGP formation with the energy deposition $\sim 4 GeV/fm^3$. Semi-analytical Proof of Abelian Dominance on Confinement in the Maximally Abelian Gauge

We study abelian dominance for confinement in terms of the local gluon properties in the maximally abelian (MA) gauge in a semi-analytical manner with the help of the lattice QCD. The global Weyl symmetry persistently remains as the relic of SU($N_c$) in the MA gauge, and provides the ambiguity on the electric and magnetic charges. We derive the criterion on the SU($N_c$)-gauge invariance in terms of the residual symmetry in the abelian gauge. In the lattice QCD, we find microscopic abelian dominance on the link variable for the whole region of $β$ in the MA gauge. The off-diagonal angle variable, which is not constrained by the MA-gauge fixing condition, tends to be random besides the residual gauge degrees of freedom. Within the random-variable approximation for the off-diagonal angle variable, we prove that off-diagonal gluon contribution to the Wilson loop obeys the perimeter law in the MA gauge, and show exact abelian dominance for the string tension, although small deviation is brought by the finite size effect of the Wilson loop in the actual lattice QCD simulation.

Chiral Symmetry Breaking in the Dual Ginzburg-Landau Theory

Confinement and chiral symmetry breaking are the most fundamental phenomena in Quark Nuclear Physics, where hadrons and nuclei are described in terms of quarks and gluons. The dual Ginzburg-Landau (DGL) theory, which contains monopole fields as the most essential degrees of freedom and their condensation in the vacuum, is modeled to describe quark confinement in strong connection with QCD. We then demonstrate that the DGL theory is able to describe the spontaneous break down of the chiral symmetry.

QCD Phase Transition at Finite Temperature in the Dual Ginzburg-Landau Theory

We study the pure-gauge QCD phase transition at finite temperatures in the dual Ginzburg-Landau theory, an effective theory of QCD based on the dual Higgs mechanism. We formulate the effective potential at various temperatures by introducing the quadratic source term, which is a new useful method to obtain the effective potential in the negative-curvature region. Thermal effects reduce the QCD-monopole condensate and bring a first-order deconfinement phase transition. We find a large reduction of the self-interaction among QCD-monopoles and the glueball masses near the critical temperature by considering the temperature dependence of the self-interaction. We also calculate the string tension at finite temperatures.
