Chiral random matrix theory for colorful quark-antiquark condensates

In QCD at high density, the color-octet quark-antiquark condensate $\langle\overlineψγ_0(λ^A)_C (λ^A)_Fψ\rangle$ is generally nonzero and dynamically breaks the $\mathrm{SU}(3)_C\times \mathrm{SU}(3)_L\times\mathrm{SU}(3)_R$ symmetry down to the diagonal $\mathrm{SU}(3)_V$. We evaluate this condensate in the mean-field approximation and find that it is of order $μΔ^2\log(μ/Δ)$ where $Δ$ is the BCS gap of quarks. Next we propose a novel non-Hermitian chiral random matrix theory that describes the formation of colorful quark-antiquark condensates. We take the microscopic large-$N$ limit and find that three phases appear depending on the parameter of the model. They are the color-flavor locked phase, the polar phase, and the normal phase. We rigorously derive the effective theory of Nambu-Goldstone modes and determine the quark-mass dependence of the partition function.

Chiral random matrix theory for single-flavor spin-one Cooper pairing

We propose a new non-Hermitian chiral random matrix model that describes single-flavor spin-one Cooper pairing of quarks. For three colors the model shows spontaneous breaking of color $\mathrm{SU}(3)_C$ and spin $\mathrm{SO}(3)_J$ symmetries down to the diagonal $\mathrm{SO}(3)_{C+J}$ subgroup, in striking analogy to the color-spin locked phase of one-flavor QCD at high density. For two colors, color-singlet spin-one diquarks condense and trigger symmetry breaking $\mathrm{U}(1) \times \mathrm{SO}(3)_J \to \mathrm{SO}(2)_J$. In both cases the microscopic large-$N$ limit is rigorously taken and the effective theory of Nambu-Goldstone modes is derived.

Quantum distillation in QCD

We propose a grading protocol which assigns global symmetry associated phases to states in the Hilbert space. Without modifying the Hilbert space, this changes the state sum, a process that we call quantum distillation. We describe the image of quantum distillation in path integral in terms of (non-dynamical) flavor holonomy dependence of (dynamical) gauge holonomy potentials, in QCD with $N_f=N_c$ fundamental and one massive adjoint fermion on $\mathbb R^3 \times S^1$. The compactified theory possesses an exact zero-form color-flavor center symmetry for a special choice of flavor holonomy (under which Polyakov loop is charged), despite the absence of one-form center-symmetry. We prove that the CFC symmetry is stable at small-$β$. This is the opposite of the high-temperature limit of thermal theory and a dramatic manifestation of quantum distillation. We show chiral symmetry breaking at small $S^1$ and that the vacuum structure of the theory on $\mathbb R^4$ and $\mathbb R^3 \times S^1$ are controlled by the same mixed 't Hooft anomaly condition.

Heavy-tailed chiral random matrix theory

We study an unconventional chiral random matrix model with a heavy-tailed probabilistic weight. The model is shown to exhibit chiral symmetry breaking with no bilinear condensate, in analogy to the Stern phase of QCD. We solve the model analytically and obtain the microscopic spectral density and the smallest eigenvalue distribution for an arbitrary number of flavors and arbitrary quark masses. Exotic behaviors such as non-decoupling of heavy flavors and a power-law tail of the smallest eigenvalue distribution are illustrated.

Nonperturbative RG analysis of five-dimensional O(N) models with cubic interactions

We reconsider critical properties of O(N) scalar models with cubic interactions in $d>4$ dimensions using functional renormalization group equations. Working at next-to-leading order in the derivative expansion, we find non-trivial IR fixed points at small and intermediate N from beta functions for relevant cubic terms. The putative fixed point at large N suggested recently by higher spin holography and the epsilon-expansion is also discussed, with an emphasis on stability of the effective potential.

Nonrelativistic Banks-Casher relation and random matrix theory for multi-component fermionic superfluids

We apply QCD-inspired techniques to study nonrelativistic N-component degenerate fermions with attractive interactions. By analyzing the singular-value spectrum of the fermion matrix in the Lagrangian, we derive several exact relations that characterize the spontaneous symmetry breaking U(1)xSU(N)$\to$Sp(N) through bifermion condensates. These are nonrelativistic analogues of the Banks-Casher relation and the Smilga-Stern relation in QCD. Non-local order parameters are also introduced and their spectral representations are derived, from which a nontrivial constraint on the phase diagram is obtained. The effective theory of soft collective excitations is derived and its equivalence to random matrix theory is demonstrated in the epsilon-regime. We numerically confirm the above analytical predictions in Monte Carlo simulations.

Overscreened Kondo effect, (color) superconductivity and Shiba states in Dirac metals and quark matter

We study the interplay between the Kondo effect and (color) superconductivity in doped Dirac metals with magnetic impurities and in quark matter with colorful impurities. We first point out that the overscreened Kondo effect arises in the normal state of these systems. Next the (color) superconducting gap is incorporated as a mean field and the phase diagram for a varying gap and temperature is constructed nonperturbatively. A rich phase structure emerges from a competition of effects unique to a multichannel system. The Kondo-screened phase is shown to disappear for a sufficiently large gap. Peculiarity of quark matter due to the confining property of non-Abelian gauge fields is noted. We also investigate the spectrum of sub-gap excited states, called Shiba states. Based on a model calculation and physical reasoning we predict that, as the coupling of the impurity to the bulk is increased, there will be more than one quantum phase transition due to level crossing among overscreened states.

U(1) axial symmetry and Dirac spectra in QCD at high temperature

We derive some exact results concerning the anomalous U(1)$_A$ symmetry in the chirally symmetric phase of QCD at high temperature. We discuss the importance of topology and finite-volume effects on the U(1)$_A$ symmetry violation characterized by the difference of chiral susceptibilities. In particular, we present a reliable method to measure the anomaly strength in lattice simulations with fixed topology. We also derive new spectral sum rules and a novel Banks-Casher-type relation. Through our spectral analysis we arrive at a simple alternative proof of the Aoki-Fukaya-Taniguchi "theorem" on the effective restoration of the U(1)$_A$ symmetry at high temperature.

Chiral symmetry breaking with no bilinear condensate revisited

While chiral symmetry breaking in the QCD vacuum is attributed to nonzero chiral condensate, an alternative symmetry breaking pattern with no chiral condensate is also possible, as pointed out by Stern. This hypothetical phase was excluded in QCD at zero density long time ago, but nothing forbids it at finite baryon density. In this work, we study the $θ$ dependence of this unorthodox phase on the basis of chiral perturbation theory. Physical observables such as energy density, topological susceptibility, non-local chiral order parameter and meson masses are computed analytically in the epsilon-regime. At nonzero $θ$ we find an exotic phase that breaks vectorial flavor symmetries in a way analogous to the Aoki phase in lattice QCD.

Magnetic susceptibility of a strongly interacting thermal medium with 2+1 quark flavors

Thermodynamics of the three-flavor quark-meson model with axial anomaly is studied in the presence of external magnetic fields. The nonperturbative functional renormalization group is employed in order to incorporate quantum and thermal fluctuations beyond the mean-field approximation. We calculate the magnetic susceptibility with proper renormalization and find that the system is diamagnetic in the hadron phase and paramagnetic in the hot plasma phase. The obtained values of the magnetic susceptibility are in reasonable agreement with the data from first-principle lattice QCD. Comparison with the mean-field approximation, the Hadron Resonance Gas model and a free gas with temperature-dependent masses is also made.

Phonons, pions and quasi-long-range order in spatially modulated chiral condensates

We investigate low-energy fluctuations in the real kink crystal phase of dense quark matter within the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model. The modulated chiral condensate breaks both the translational symmetry and chiral symmetry spontaneously, which leads to the appearance of phonons and pions that are dominant degrees of freedom in the infrared. Using the Ginzburg-Landau expansion near the Lifshitz point, we derive elastic free energies for phonons and pions in dependence on the temperature and chemical potential. We show that the one-dimensional modulation is destroyed by thermal fluctuations of phonons at nonzero temperature, and compute the exponent that characterizes the anisotropic algebraic decay of quasicondensate correlations at long distance. We also estimate finite-volume effects on the stability of the real kink crystal and briefly discuss the possibility of its existence in neutron stars.

Quasi-instantons in QCD with chiral symmetry restoration

We show, without using semiclassical approximations, that, in high-temperature QCD with chiral symmetry restoration and U(1) axial symmetry breaking, the partition function for sufficiently light quarks can be expressed as an ensemble of noninteracting objects with topological charge that obey the Poisson statistics. We argue that the topological objects are "quasi-instantons" (rather than bare instantons) taking into account quantum effects. Our result is valid even close to the (pseudo)critical temperature of the chiral phase transition.

Structure of Lefschetz thimbles in simple fermionic systems

The Picard-Lefschetz theory offers a promising tool to solve the sign problem in QCD and other field theories with complex path-integral weight. In this paper the Lefschetz-thimble approach is examined in simple fermionic models which share some features with QCD. In zero-dimensional versions of the Gross-Neveu model and the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model, we study the structure of Lefschetz thimbles and its variation across the chiral phase transition. We map out a phase diagram in the complex four-fermion coupling plane using a thimble decomposition of the path integral, and demonstrate an interesting link between anti-Stokes lines and Lee-Yang zeros. In the case of nonzero mass, it is shown that the approach to the chiral limit is singular because of intricate cancellation between competing thimbles, which implies the necessity to sum up multiple thimbles related by symmetry. We also consider a Chern-Simons theory with fermions in $0+1$-dimension and show how Lefschetz thimbles solve the complex phase problem caused by a topological term. These prototypical examples would aid future application of this framework to bona fide QCD.

Banks-Casher-type relations for complex Dirac spectra

For theories with a sign problem there is no analog of the Banks-Casher relation. This is true in particular for QCD at nonzero quark chemical potential. However, for QCD-like theories without a sign problem the Banks-Casher relation can be extended to the case of complex Dirac eigenvalues. We derive such extensions for the zero-temperature, high-density limits of two-color QCD, QCD at nonzero isospin chemical potential, and adjoint QCD. In all three cases the density of the complex Dirac eigenvalues at the origin is proportional to the BCS gap squared.

Chiral dynamics in a magnetic field from the functional renormalization group

We investigate the quark-meson model in a magnetic field using the exact functional renormalization group equation beyond the local-potential approximation. Our truncation of the effective action involves anisotropic wave function renormalization for mesons, which allows us to investigate how the magnetic field distorts the propagation of neutral mesons. Solving the flow equation numerically, we find that the transverse velocity of mesons decreases with the magnetic field at all temperatures, which is most prominent at zero temperature. The meson screening masses and the pion decay constants are also computed. The constituent quark mass is found to increase with magnetic field at all temperatures, resulting in the crossover temperature that increases monotonically with the magnetic field. This tendency is consistent with most model calculations but not with the lattice simulation performed at the physical point. Our work suggests that the strong anisotropy of meson propagation may not be the fundamental origin of the inverse magnetic catalysis.

Stressed Cooper pairing in QCD at high isospin density: effective Lagrangian and random matrix theory

We generalize QCD at asymptotically large isospin chemical potential to an arbitrary even number of flavors. We also allow for small quark chemical potentials, which stress the coincident Fermi surfaces of the paired quarks and lead to a sign problem in Monte Carlo simulations. We derive the corresponding low-energy effective theory in both $p$- and $ε$-expansion and quantify the severity of the sign problem. We construct the random matrix theory describing our physical situation and show that it can be mapped to a known random matrix theory at low baryon density so that new insights can be gained without additional calculations. In particular, we explain the Silver Blaze phenomenon at high isospin density. We also introduce stressed singular values of the Dirac operator and relate them to the pionic condensate. Finally we comment on extensions of our work to two-color QCD.

preprint2013arXiv

Banks-Casher-type relation for the BCS gap at high density

We derive a new Banks-Casher-type relation which relates the density of complex Dirac eigenvalues at the origin to the BCS gap of quarks at high density. Our relation is applicable to QCD and QCD-like theories without a sign problem, such as two-color QCD and adjoint QCD with baryon chemical potential, and QCD with isospin chemical potential. It provides us with a method to measure the BCS gap through the Dirac spectrum on the lattice.

preprint2012arXiv

Singular values of the Dirac operator at nonzero density

At nonzero density the eigenvalues of the Dirac operator move into the complex plane, while its singular values remain real and nonnegative. In QCD-like theories, the singular-value spectrum carries information on the diquark (or pionic) condensate. We have constructed low-energy effective theories in different density regimes and derived a number of exact results for the Dirac singular values, including Banks-Casher-type relations for the diquark (or pionic) condensate, Smilga-Stern-type relations for the slope of the singular-value density, and Leutwyler-Smilga-type sum rules for the inverse singular values. We also present a rigorous index theorem for non-Hermitian Dirac operators.

Exact results for two-color QCD at low and high density

We discuss a random matrix theory that was originally constructed to describe two-color QCD at low density in the phase with a nonzero chiral condensate. With a particular choice of a parameter, the same random matrix theory also describes the high-density phase of two-color QCD. In this phase a BCS superfluid of diquark pairs is formed, and the pattern of chiral symmetry breaking is very different from that at low density. Analytical results for the spectral density obtained from this random matrix theory allow for the extraction of the BCS gap from lattice data.

Singular values of the Dirac operator in dense QCD-like theories

We study the singular values of the Dirac operator in dense QCD-like theories at zero temperature. The Dirac singular values are real and nonnegative at any nonzero quark density. The scale of their spectrum is set by the diquark condensate, in contrast to the complex Dirac eigenvalues whose scale is set by the chiral condensate at low density and by the BCS gap at high density. We identify three different low-energy effective theories with diquark sources applicable at low, intermediate, and high density, together with their overlapping domains of validity. We derive a number of exact formulas for the Dirac singular values, including Banks-Casher-type relations for the diquark condensate, Smilga-Stern-type relations for the slope of the singular value density, and Leutwyler-Smilga-type sum rules for the inverse singular values. We construct random matrix theories and determine the form of the microscopic spectral correlation functions of the singular values for all nonzero quark densities. We also derive a rigorous index theorem for non-Hermitian Dirac operators. Our results can in principle be tested in lattice simulations.

Topological Interactions of Non-Abelian Vortices with Quasi-Particles in High Density QCD

Non-Abelian vortices are topologically stable objects in the color-flavor locked (CFL) phase of dense QCD. We derive a dual Lagrangian starting with the Ginzburg-Landau effective Lagrangian for the CFL phase, and obtain topological interactions of non-Abelian vortices with quasiparticles such as $U(1)_B$ Nambu-Goldstone bosons (phonons) and massive gluons. We find that the phonons couple to the translational zero modes of the vortices while the gluons couple to their orientational zero modes in the internal space.

Chiral random matrix theory for two-color QCD at high density

We identify a non-Hermitian chiral random matrix theory that corresponds to two-color QCD at high density. We show that the partition function of the random matrix theory coincides with the partition function of the finite-volume effective theory at high density, and that the Leutwyler-Smilga-type spectral sum rules of the random matrix theory are identical to those derived from the effective theory. The microscopic Dirac spectrum of the theory is governed by the BCS gap, rather than the conventional chiral condensate. We also show that with a different choice of a parameter the random matrix theory yields the effective partition function at low density.

Chiral Lagrangian and spectral sum rules for two-color QCD at high density

We report on our analytical study of two-color QCD with an even number of flavors at high baryon density. Based on the pattern of chiral symmetry breaking induced by BCS-type diquark pairing we construct the low-energy effective Lagrangian for the Nambu-Goldstone bosons. We also identify a new epsilon-regime at high baryon density and derive Leutwyler-Smilga-type spectral sum rules for the complex eigenvalues of the Dirac operator in terms of the fermion gap. Our results can in principle be tested in lattice QCD simulations.

Generalizing the Tomboulis-Yaffe Inequality to SU(N) Lattice Gauge Theories and General Classical Spin Systems

We extend the inequality of Tomboulis and Yaffe in SU(2) lattice gauge theory (LGT) to SU(N) LGT and to general classical spin systems, by use of reflection positivity. Basically the inequalities guarantee that a system in a box that is sufficiently insensitive to boundary conditions has a non-zero mass gap. We explicitly illustrate the theorem in some solvable models. Strong coupling expansion is then utilized to discuss some aspects of the theorem. Finally a conjecture for exact expression to the off-axis mass gap of the triangular Ising model is presented. The validity of the conjecture is tested in multiple ways.
