Convergence of improper Iwasawa Continued Fractions

We prove the convergence of a wide class of continued fractions, including generalized continued fractions over quaternions and octonions. Fractional points in these systems are not bounded away from the unit sphere, so that the iteration map is not uniformly expanding. We bypass this problem by analyzing digit sequences for points that converge to the unit sphere under iteration, expanding on previous methods of Dani-Nogueira.

Ergodicity of Iwasawa continued fractions via markable hyperbolic geodesics

We prove the convergence and ergodicity of a wide class of real and higher-dimensional continued fraction algorithms, including folded and $α$-type variants of complex, quaternionic, octonionic, and Heisenberg continued fractions, which we combine under the framework of Iwasawa continued fractions. The proof is based on the interplay of continued fractions and hyperbolic geometry, the ergodicity of geodesic flow in associated modular manifolds, and a variation on the notion of geodesic coding that we refer to as geodesic marking. As a corollary of our study of markable geodesics, we obtain a generalization of Serret's tail-equivalence theorem for almost all points. The results are new even in the case of complex continued fractions.

Heisenberg quasiregular ellipticity

Following the Euclidean results of Varopoulos and Pankka--Rajala, we provide a necessary topological condition for a sub-Riemannian 3-manifold $M$ to admit a nonconstant quasiregular mapping from the sub-Riemannian Heisenberg group $\mathbb{H}$. As an application, we show that a link complement $S^3\backslash L$ has a sub-Riemannian metric admitting such a mapping only if $L$ is empty, the unknot or Hopf link. In the converse direction, if $L$ is empty, a specific unknot or Hopf link, we construct a quasiregular mapping from $\mathbb{H}$ to $S^3\backslash L$. The main result is obtained by translating a growth condition on $π_1(M)$ into the existence of a supersolution to the $4$-harmonic equation, and relies on recent advances in the study of analysis and potential theory on metric spaces.

Separated Nets in Nilpotent Groups

In this paper we generalize several results on separated nets in Euclidean space to separated nets in connected simply connected nilpotent Lie groups. We show that every such group $G$ contains separated nets that are not biLipschitz equivalent. We define a class of separated nets in these groups arising from a generalization of the cut-and-project quasi-crystal construction and show that generically any such separated net is bounded displacement equivalent to a separated net of constant covolume. In addition, we use a generalization of the Laczkovich criterion to provide `exotic' perturbations of such separated nets.

Intrinsic Diophantine approximation in Carnot groups and in the Siegel model of the Heisenberg group

We initiate the study of an intrinsic notion of Diophantine approximation on a rational Carnot group $G$. If $G$ has Hausdorff dimension $Q$, we show that its Diophantine exponent is equal to $(Q+1)/Q$, generalizing the case $G=\mathbb R^n$. We furthermore obtain a precise asymptotic on the count of rational approximations. We then focus on the case of the Heisenberg group $\mathbb H^n$, distinguishing between two notions of Diophantine approximation by rational points in $\mathbb H^n$: Carnot Diophantine approximation and Siegel Diophantine approximation. After computing the Siegel Diophantine exponent (surprisingly, equal to 1 for all $\mathbb H^n$), we consider Siegel-badly approximable points to show that Siegel approximation is linked to both Heisenberg continued fractions and to geodesics in complex hyperbolic space. We conclude by showing that Carnot and Siegel approximation are qualitatively different: Siegel-badly approximable points are Schmidt winning in any complete Ahlfors regular subset of $\mathbb H^n$, while the set of Carnot-badly approximable points does not have this property.

On the lack of density of Lipschitz mappings in Sobolev spaces with Heisenberg target

We study the question: when are Lipschitz mappings dense in the Sobolev space $W^{1,p}(M,\mathbf{H}^n)$? Here $M$ denotes a compact Riemannian manifold with or without boundary, while $\mathbf{H}^n$ denotes the $n$th Heisenberg group equipped with a sub-Riemannian metric. We show that Lipschitz maps are dense in $W^{1,p}(M,\mathbf{H}^n)$ for all $1\le p<\infty$ if $\dim M \le n$, but that Lipschitz maps are not dense in $W^{1,p}(M,\mathbf{H}^n)$ if $\dim M \ge n+1$ and $n\le p<n+1$. The proofs rely on the construction of smooth horizontal embeddings of the sphere $S^n$ into $\mathbf{H}^n$. We provide two such constructions, one arising from complex hyperbolic geometry and the other arising from symplectic geometry. The nondensity assertion can be interpreted as nontriviality of the $n$th Lipschitz homotopy group of $\mathbf{H}^n$. We initiate a study of Lipschitz homotopy groups for sub-Riemannian spaces.

Continued fractions on the Heisenberg group

We provide a generalization of continued fractions to the Heisenberg group. We prove an explicit estimate on the rate of convergence of the infinite continued fraction and several surprising analogs of classical formulas about continued fractions. We then discuss dynamical properties of the associated Gauss map, comparing them with base-$b$ expansions on the Heisenberg group and continued fractions on the complex plane.

Quasiregular mappings on sub-Riemannian manifolds

We study mappings on sub-Riemannian manifolds which are quasi-regular with respect to the Carnot-Caratheodory distances and discuss several related notions. On H-type Carnot groups, quasiregular mappings have been introduced earlier using an analytic definition, but so far, a good working definition in the same spirit is not available in the setting of general sub-Riemannian manifolds. In the present paper we adopt therefore a metric rather than analytic viewpoint. As a first main result, we prove that the sub-Riemannian lens space admits nontrivial uniformly quasiregular (UQR) mappings, that is, quasiregular mappings with a uniform bound on the distortion of all the iterates. In doing so, we also obtain new examples of UQR maps on the standard sub-Riemannian spheres. The proof is based on a method for building conformal traps on sub-Riemannian spheres using quasiconformal flows, and an adaptation of this approach to quotients of spheres. One may then study the quasiregular semigroup generated by a UQR mapping. In the second part of the paper we follow Tukia to prove the existence of a measurable conformal structure which is invariant under such a semigroup. Here, the conformal structure is specified only on the horizontal distribution, and the pullback is defined using the Margulis--Mostow derivative (which generalizes the classical and Pansu derivatives).

Bi-Lipschitz extension from boundaries of certain hyperbolic spaces

Tukia and Vaisala showed that every quasi-conformal map of $\R^n$ extends to a quasi-conformal self-map of $\R^{n+1}$. The restriction of the extended map to the upper half-space $\R^n \times \R^+$ is, in fact, bi-Lipschitz with respect to the hyperbolic metric. More generally, every homogeneous negatively curved manifold decomposes as $M = N \rtimes \R^+$ where $N$ is a nilpotent group with a metric on which $\R^+$ acts by dilations. We show that under some assumptions on $N$, every quasi-symmetry of $N$ extends to a bi-Lipschitz map of $M$. The result applies to a wide class of manifolds $M$ including non-compact rank one symmetric spaces and certain manifolds that do not admit co-compact group actions. Although $M$ must be Gromov hyperbolic, its curvature need not be strictly negative.
