Bistability and chaos-assisted tunneling in the dissipative quantum systems

We revisit the problem of quantum bi- and multi-stability by considering the dissipative Double Resonance Model. For a large driving frequency, this system has a simpler phase structure than the driven dissipative nonlinear oscillator -- the paradigm model for classical and quantum bistability. This allows us to obtain an analytical estimate for the lifetime of quantum limit cycles. On the other hand, for a small driving frequency, the system is much reacher than the nonlinear oscillator. This allows us to address a novel phenomenon of dissipation- and chaos-assisted tunneling between quantum limits cycles.

Josephson oscillation in the dissipative Bose-Hubbard dimer

We analyze Josephson's oscillation of Bose particles in the open (dissipative) Bose-Hubbard dimer. First, we excite the dimer from the vacuum state into a state suitable for observing the oscillation by using a special protocol for external driving. Next, we switch off the driving and observe the oscillation. It is shown that the main mechanism for the decay of Josephson's oscillation is the dephasing due to fluctuating number of particles in open systems. An analytical estimate for the decay time is obtained.

Non-Markovian master equation for quantum transport of fermionic carriers

We propose a simple, yet feasible, model for quantum transport of fermionic carriers across tight-binding chain connecting two reservoirs maintained at arbitrary temperatures and chemical potentials. The model allows for elementary derivation of the master equation for the reduced single particle density matrix in a closed form in both Markov and Born approximations. In the Markov approximation the master equation is solved analytically, whereas in the Born approximation the problem is reduced to an algebraic equation for the single particle density matric in the Redfield form. The non-Markovian equation is shown to lead to resonant transport similar to Landauer's conductance.

Quantum entanglement and the Born-Markov approximation for an open quantum system

We revisit the Born-Markov approximation for an open quantum system by considering a microscopic model of the bath, namely, the Bose-Hubbard chain in the parameter region where it is chaotic in the sense of Quantum Chaos. It is shown that strong ergodic properties of the bath justify all approximations required for deriving the Markovian master equation from the first principles.

Evaporative cooling and self-thermalization in an open system of interacting fermions

We study depletion dynamics of an open system of weakly interacting fermions with two-body random interactions. In this model fermions are escaping from the high-energy one-particle orbitals, that mimics the evaporation process used in laboratory experiments with neutral atoms to cool them to ultra-low temperatures. It is shown that due to dynamical thermalization the system instantaneously adjusts to the new chemical potential and temperature, so that occupation numbers of the one-particle orbitals always obey the Fermi-Dirac distribution. In this way we are able to describe the evaporation process which leads to a significant cooling of particles remaining inside the system. We also briefly discuss the evaporation process in the SYK black hole model that corresponds to strongly interacting fermions.

Mott-insulator state of cold atoms in tilted optical lattices: doublon dynamics and multi-level Landau-Zener tunneling

We discuss the dynamical response of strongly interacting Bose atoms in an adiabatically tilted optical lattice. The analysis is performed in terms of the multi-level Landau-Zenner tunneling. Different regimes of tunneling are identified and analytical expressions for the doublon number, which is the quantity measured in laboratory experiments, are derived.

Bose-Hubbard Hamiltonian: Quantum Chaos approach

We discuss applications of the theory of Quantum Chaos to one of the paradigm models of many-body quantum physics -- the Bose-Hubbard model, which describes, in particular, interacting ultracold Bose atoms in an optical lattice. After preliminary, pure quantum analysis of the system we introduce the classical counterpart of the Bose-Hubbard model and the governing semiclassical equations of motion. We analyze these equations for the problem of Bloch oscillations of cold atoms where a number of experimental results are available. The review is written for non-experts and can be viewed as an introduction to the field.

On quantum phase transitions in tilted 2D lattices

We discuss the quantum phase transition from the Mott-insulator state to the density-wave state for cold Bose atoms in a 2D square lattice as the lattice is adiabatically tilted along one of its primary axes. It is shown that a small misalignment of the tilt drastically changes the result of the adiabatic passage and, instead of the density-wave state, one obtains a disordered state. Intrinsic relation of the problem to Bloch oscillations of hard-core bosons in a 2D lattice is illuminated.

Escape dynamics of Bose-Hubbard dimer out of a trap

We consider a potential scattering of Bose-Hubbard dimer in 1D optical lattice. A numerical approach based on effective non-Hermitian Hamiltonian has been developed for solving the scattering problem. It allows to compute the tunneling and dissociation probabilities for arbitrary shape of the potential barrier and arbitrary kinetic energy of the dimer. The developed approach has been used to address the problem of two-particle decay out of a trap. In particular, it is shown that the presence of dissociation channels significantly decreases non-escape probability due to single-particle escape to those channels.

Landau-Stark states and cyclotron-Bloch oscillations of a quantum particle

Recent experimental progress in the creation of synthetic electric and magnetic fields, acting on cold atoms in a two-dimensional lattice, has attracted renewed interest to the problem of a quantum particle in the Hall configuration. The present work contains a detailed analysis of the eigenstates of this system, called Landau-Stark states, and of the associated dynamical phenomenon of cyclotron-Bloch oscillations. It is shown that Landau-Stark states and cyclotron-Bloch oscillations crucially depend on two factors. The first is the orientation of the electric field relative to the primary axes of the lattice. The second is ratio between the frequencies of Bloch and cyclotron oscillations, that is also the ratio between the magnitudes of electric and magnetic fields. The analysis is first carried out in the tight-binding approximation, where the magnetic field is characterized by the Peierls phase entering the hopping matrix elements. Agreement of this analysis with the full quantum theory is also studied.

Landau-Stark states and edge-induced Bloch oscillations in topological lattices

We consider dynamics of a charged particle in a finite along the $x$ direction square lattice in the presence of normal to the lattice plane magnetic field and in-plane electric field aligned with the $y$ axis. For vanishing magnetic field this dynamics would be common Bloch oscillations where the particle oscillates in the $y$ direction with amplitude inverse proportional to the electric field. We show that a non-zero magnetic field crucially modifies this dynamics. Namely, the new Bloch oscillations consist of time intervals where the particle moves with constant velocity in the $x$ direction intermitted by intervals where it is accelerated or decelerated along the lattice edges. The analysis is done in terms of the Landau-Stark states which are eigenstates of a quantum particle in a two-dimensional lattice subject to (real or synthetic) electric and magnetic fields.

Quantum particle in a parabolic lattice in the presence of a gauge field

We analyze the eigenstates of a two-dimensional lattice with additional harmonic confinement in the presence of an artificial magnetic field. While the softness of the confinement makes a distinction between bulk and edge states difficult, the interplay of harmonic potential and lattice leads to a different classification of states in three energy regions: In the low-energy regime, where lattice effects are small, all states are transporting topologically non-trivial states. For large energies above a certain critical value, the periodic lattice causes localization of all states through a mechanism similar to Wannier-Stark localization. In the intermediate energy regime transporting, topologically non- trivial states coexist with topologically trivial counter-transporting chaotic states. The character of the eigenstates, in particular their transport properties are studied numerically and are explained using a semiclassical analysis.

Induced tunneling and localization for a quantum particle in tilted two-dimensional lattices

We consider a quantum particle in tilted two-dimensional lattices in the tight-binding approximations. We found that for some lattice geometries and certain orientations of the static force with respect to the lattice primary axes the particle can freely move across the lattice in the direction perpendicular to the vector of the static force. This effect is argued to be analogue of the photon-induced tunneling in driven one-dimensional lattices. The obtained dispersion relation for the transverse motion of the particle draws this analogy further by eventually showing band collapses when a control parameter is varied.

Master equation approach to conductivity of bosonic and fermionic carriers in one- and two-dimensional lattices

We discuss the master equation approach to diffusive current of bosonic or fermionic carriers in one- and two-dimensional lattices. This approach is shown to reproduce all known results of the linear response theory, including the integer quantum Hall effect for fermionic carriers. The main advantage of the approach is that it allows to calculate the current beyond the linear response regime where new effects are found. In particular, we show that the Hall current can be inverted by changing orientation of the static force (electric field) relative to the primary axes of the lattice.

Landau-Zener tunneling in 2D periodic structures in the presence of a gauge field I: Tunneling rates

We study the interband Landau-Zener tunneling of a quantum particle in the Hall configuration, i.e., in the presence of normal to the lattice plane gauge field (for example, magnetic field for a charged particle) and in-plane potential field (electric field for a charged particle). The interband tunneling is induced by the potential field and for vanishing gauge field is described by the common Landau-Zener theory. We generalize this theory for non-zero gauge field. The depletion rates of low-energy bands are calculated by using semi-analytical method of the truncated Floquet matrix.

Nucleation in finite topological systems during continuous metastable quantum phase transitions

Finite topological quantum systems can undergo continuous metastable quantum phase transitions to change their topological nature. Here we show how to nucleate the transition between ring currents and dark soliton states in a toroidally trapped Bose-Einstein condensate. An adiabatic passage to wind and unwind its phase is achieved by explicit global breaking of the rotational symmetry. This could be realized with current experimental technology.

The driven Harper model

We analyze the driven Harper model, which appears in the problem of tight-binding electrons in the Hall configuration (normal to the lattice plane magnetic field plus in-plane electric field). The presence of an electric field extends the celebrated Harper model, which is parametrized by the Peierls phase, into the driven Harper model, which is additionally parametrized by two Bloch frequencies associated with the two components of the electric field. We show that the eigenstates of the driven Harper model are either extended or localized, depending on the commensurability of Bloch frequencies. This results holds for both rational and irrational values of the Peierls phase. In the case of incommensurate Bloch frequencies we provide an estimate for the wave-function localization length.

Wannier-Stark states and Bloch oscillations in the honeycomb lattice

We study a quantum particle in a tilted honeycomb lattice in the tight-binding approximation. First we discuss the particle eigenstates, i.e., the stationary Wannier-Stark states. These states are proved to be extended states for the rational directions of the static field and localized states for the irrational directions. We find energy bands of the extended states and analyze the localized states. It is shown, in particular, that the localized `honeycomb' Wannier-Stark states are chaotic states with irregular dependence of the localization length on the static field magnitude. Second we discuss Bloch oscillations of the quantum particle. Irregular Bloch oscillations for irrational directions are observed.

Creating artificial magnetic fields for cold atoms by photon-assisted tunneling

This paper proposes a simple setup for introducing an artificial magnetic field for neutral atoms in 2D optical lattices. This setup is based on the phenomenon of photon-assisted tunneling and involves a low-frequency periodic driving of the optical lattice. This low-frequency driving does not affect the electronic structure of the atom and can be easily realized by the same means which employed to create the lattice. We also address the problem of detecting this effective magnetic field. In particular, we study the center of mass wave-packet dynamics, which is shown to exhibit certain features of cyclotron dynamics of a classical charged particle.

Energetically constrained co-tunneling of cold atoms

We study under-barrier tunneling for a pair of energetically bound bosonic atoms in an optical lattice with a barrier. We identify conditions under which this exotic molecule tunnels as a point particle with the coordinate given by the bound pair center of mass and discuss the atomic co-tunneling beyond this regime. In particular, we quantitatively analyze resonantly enhanced co-tunneling, where two interacting atoms penetrate the barrier with higher probability than a single atom.

preprint2011arXiv

Hall conductivity beyond the linear response regime

The paper introduces a semi-analytical method for calculating the Hall conductivity in the single-band approximations. The method goes beyond the linear response theory and, thus, imposes no limitation on the electric fields magnitude. It is shown that the Hall current decreases with increase of the electric field, if the Bloch frequency (which is proportional to the electric field) exceeds the cyclotron frequency (which is proportional to the magnetic field). The obtained results can be directly applied to the system of cold Bose atoms in a 2D optical lattice, where the single-band approximation is well justified.

Simulating cyclotron-Bloch dynamics of a charged particle in a 2D lattice by means of cold atoms in driven quasi 1D optical lattices

Quantum dynamics of a charged particle in a 2D lattice subject to magnetic and electric fields is a rather complicated interplay between cyclotron oscillations (the case of vanishing electric field) and Bloch oscillations (zero magnetic field), details of which has not yet been completely understood. In the present work we suggest to study this problem by using cold atoms in optical lattices. We introduce a 1D model which can be easily realized in laboratory experiments with quasi 1D optical lattices and show that this model captures many features of the cyclotron-Bloch dynamics of the quantum particle in 2D square lattices.

Bright solitons and self-trapping with a BEC of cold atoms in driven tilted optical lattices

We suggest a method for creating bright matter solitons by loading a BEC of atoms in a driven tilted optical lattice. It is shown that one can realize the self-focussing regime for the wave-packet dynamics by properly adjusting the phase of the driving field with respect to the phase of Bloch oscillations. If atom-atom interactions are larger than some critical value $g_{min}$, this self-focussing regime is followed by the formation of bright solitons. Increasing the interactions above another critical value $g_{max}$ makes this process unstable. Instead of soliton formation one now meets the phenomenon of incoherent self-trapping. In this regime a fraction of atoms is trapped in incoherent localized wave-packets, while the remaining atoms spread ballistically.

Dynamics of interacting atoms in driven tilted optical lattices

The dynamics of cold Bose atoms in driven tilted optical lattices is analyzed focusing on destruction of Wannier-Stark localization and the phenomenon of band collapse. It is argued that an understanding of the experimental results requires thorough account for interaction effects. These are suppression of the ballistic spreading of atoms for resonant driving (a multiple of the driving frequency coincides with the Bloch frequency) and unbounded sub-diffusive spreading of atoms for off-resonant driving.

Bloch oscillations of Bose-Einstein condensates: Quantum counterpart of dynamical instability

We study the Bloch dynamics of a quasi one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate of cold atoms in a tilted optical lattice modeled by a Hamiltonian of Bose-Hubbard type: The corresponding mean-field system described by a discrete nonlinear Schrödinger equation can show a dynamical (or modulation) instability due to chaotic dynamics and equipartition over the quasimomentum modes. It is shown, that these phenomena are related to a depletion of the Floquet-Bogoliubov states and a decoherence of the condensate in the many-particle description. Three different types of dynamics are distinguished: (i) decaying oscillations in the region of dynamical instability, and (ii) persisting Bloch oscillations or (iii) periodic decay and revivals in the region of stability.

Bose-Einstein condensates on tilted lattices: coherent, chaotic and subdiffusive dynamics

The dynamics of a (quasi)one-dimensional interacting atomic Bose-Einstein condensate in a tilted optical lattice is studied in a discrete mean-field approximation, i.e., in terms of the discrete nonlinear Schrödinger equation. If the static field is varied the system shows a plethora of dynamical phenomena. In the strong field limit we demonstrate the existence of (almost) non-spreading states which remain localized on the lattice region populated initially and show coherent Bloch oscillations with fractional revivals in the momentum space (so called quantum carpets). With decreasing field, the dynamics becomes irregular, however, still confined in configuration space. For even weaker fields we find sub-diffusive dynamics with a wave-packet width spreading as $t^{1/4}$.
