Classical-quantum correspondence in bosonic two-mode conversion systems: polynomial algebras and Kummer shapes

Bosonic quantum conversion systems can be modeled by many-particle single-mode Hamiltonians describing a conversion of $n$ molecules of type A into $m$ molecules of type B and vice versa. These Hamiltonians are analyzed in terms of generators of a polynomially deformed $su(2)$ algebra. In the mean-field limit of large particle numbers, these systems become classical and their Hamiltonian dynamics can again be described by polynomial deformations of a Lie algebra, where quantum commutators are replaced by Poisson brackets. The Casimir operator restricts the motion to Kummer shapes, deformed Bloch spheres with cusp singularities depending on $m$ and $n$. It is demonstrated that the many-particle eigenvalues can be recovered from the mean-field dynamics using a WKB type quantization condition. The many-particle state densities can be semiclassically approximated by the time-periods of periodic orbits, which show characteristic steps and singularities related to the fixed points, whose bifurcation properties are analyzed.

Bose-Hubbard dimers, Viviani's windows and pendulum dynamics

The two-mode Bose-Hubbard model in the mean-field approximation is revisited emphasizing a geometric interpretation where the system orbits appear as intersection curves of a (Bloch) sphere and a cylinder oriented parallel to the mode axis, which provide a generalization of Viviani's curve studied already in 1692. In addition, the dynamics is shown to agree with the simple mathematical pendulum. The areas enclosed by the generalised Viviani curves, the action integrals, which can be used to semiclassically quantize the N-particle eigenstates, are evaluated. Furthermore the significance of the original Viviani curve for the quantum system is demonstrated.

Classical and quantum dynamics in the (non-Hermitian) Swanson oscillator

The non-Hermitian quadratic oscillator studied by Swanson is one of the popular $PT$-symmetric model systems. Here a full classical description of its dynamics is derived using recently developed metriplectic flow equations, which combine the classical symplectic flow for Hermitian systems with a dissipative metric flow for the anti-Hermitian part. Closed form expressions for the metric and phase-space trajectories are presented which are found to be periodic in time. Since the Hamiltonian is only quadratic the classical dynamics exactly describes the quantum dynamics of Gaussian wave packets. It is shown that the classical metric and trajectories as well as the quantum wave functions can diverge in finite time even though the $PT$-symmetry is unbroken, i.e., the eigenvalues are purely real.

Dynamics of interacting atoms in driven tilted optical lattices

The dynamics of cold Bose atoms in driven tilted optical lattices is analyzed focusing on destruction of Wannier-Stark localization and the phenomenon of band collapse. It is argued that an understanding of the experimental results requires thorough account for interaction effects. These are suppression of the ballistic spreading of atoms for resonant driving (a multiple of the driving frequency coincides with the Bloch frequency) and unbounded sub-diffusive spreading of atoms for off-resonant driving.

Quantum Classical Correspondence for a non-Hermitian Bose-Hubbard Dimer

We investigate the many-particle and mean-field correspondence for a non-Hermitian N-particle Bose-Hubbard dimer where a complex onsite energy describes an effective decay from one of the modes. Recently a generalized mean-field approximation for this non-Hermitian many-particle system yielding an alternative complex nonlinear Schrödinger equation was introduced. Here we give details of this mean-field approximation and show that the resulting dynamics can be expressed in a generalized canonical form that includes a metric gradient flow. The interplay of nonlinearity and non-Hermiticity introduces a qualitatively new behavior to the mean-field dynamics: The presence of the non-Hermiticity promotes the self-trapping transition, while damping the self-trapping oscillations, and the nonlinearity introduces a strong sensitivity to the initial conditions in the decay of the normalization. Here we present a complete characterization of the mean-field dynamics and the fixed point structure. We also investigate the full many-particle dynamics, which shows a rich variety of breakdown and revival as well as tunneling phenomena on top of the mean-field structure.

Bloch oscillations of Bose-Einstein condensates: Quantum counterpart of dynamical instability

We study the Bloch dynamics of a quasi one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate of cold atoms in a tilted optical lattice modeled by a Hamiltonian of Bose-Hubbard type: The corresponding mean-field system described by a discrete nonlinear Schrödinger equation can show a dynamical (or modulation) instability due to chaotic dynamics and equipartition over the quasimomentum modes. It is shown, that these phenomena are related to a depletion of the Floquet-Bogoliubov states and a decoherence of the condensate in the many-particle description. Three different types of dynamics are distinguished: (i) decaying oscillations in the region of dynamical instability, and (ii) persisting Bloch oscillations or (iii) periodic decay and revivals in the region of stability.

Bose-Einstein condensates on tilted lattices: coherent, chaotic and subdiffusive dynamics

The dynamics of a (quasi)one-dimensional interacting atomic Bose-Einstein condensate in a tilted optical lattice is studied in a discrete mean-field approximation, i.e., in terms of the discrete nonlinear Schrödinger equation. If the static field is varied the system shows a plethora of dynamical phenomena. In the strong field limit we demonstrate the existence of (almost) non-spreading states which remain localized on the lattice region populated initially and show coherent Bloch oscillations with fractional revivals in the momentum space (so called quantum carpets). With decreasing field, the dynamics becomes irregular, however, still confined in configuration space. For even weaker fields we find sub-diffusive dynamics with a wave-packet width spreading as $t^{1/4}$.
