Evidence for pressure induced unconventional quantum criticality in the coupled spin ladder antiferromagnet C$_9$H$_{18}$N$_2$CuBr$_4$

Quantum phase transitions in quantum matter occur at zero temperature between distinct ground states by tuning a nonthermal control parameter. Often, they can be accurately described within the Landau theory of phase transitions, similarly to conventional thermal phase transitions. However, this picture can break down under certain circumstances. Here, we present a comprehensive study of the effect of hydrostatic pressure on the magnetic structure and spin dynamics of the spin-1/2 ladder compound C$_9$H$_{18}$N$_2$CuBr$_4$. Single-crystal heat capacity and neutron diffraction measurements reveal that the N$\rm \acute{e}$el-ordered phase breaks down beyond a critical pressure of $P_{\rm c}$$\sim$1.0 GPa through a continuous quantum phase transition. Estimates of the critical exponents suggest that this transition may fall outside the traditional Landau paradigm. The inelastic neutron scattering spectra at 1.3 GPa are characterized by two well-separated gapped modes, including one continuum-like and another resolution-limited excitation in distinct scattering channels, which further indicates an exotic quantum-disordered phase above $P_{\rm c}$.

The Cold Neutron Chopper Spectrometer at the Spallation Neutron Source - A Review of the first 8 Years of Operation

The first eight years of operation of the Cold Neutron Chopper Spectrometer (CNCS) at the Spallation Neutron Source in Oak Ridge is being reviewed. The instrument has been part of the facility user program since 2009, and more than 250 individual user experiments have been performed to date. CNCS is an extremely powerful and versatile instrument and offers leading edge performance in terms of beam intensity, energy resolution, and flexibility to trade one for another. Experiments are being routinely performed with the sample at extreme conditions: T~0.05K, p>=2GPa and B=8T can be achieved individually or in combination. In particular, CNCS is in a position to advance the state of the art with inelastic neutron scattering under pressure, and some of the recent accomplishments in this area will be presented in more detail.

Long-Range Magnetic Interactions in the Multiferroic Antiferromagnet $\rm MnWO_4$

The spin-wave excitations of the multiferroic $\rm MnWO_4$ have been measured in its low-temperature collinear commensurate phase using high-resolution inelastic neutron scattering. These excitations can be well described by a Heisenberg model with competing long-range exchange interactions and a single-ion anisotropy term. The magnetic interactions are strongly frustrated within the zigzag spin chain along c axis and between chains along the a axis, while the coupling between spin along the b axis is much weaker. The balance of these interactions results in the noncollinear incommensurate spin structure associated with the magnetoelectric effect, and the perturbation of the magnetic interactions leads to the observed rich phase diagrams of the chemically-doped materials. This delicate balance can also be tuned by the application of external electric or magnetic fields to achieve magnetoelectric control of this type of materials.
