Neutron shielding and activation of the MASTU device and surrounds

A significant functional upgrade is planned for the Mega Ampere Spherical Tokamak (MAST) device, located at Culham in the UK, including the implementation of a notably greater neutral beam injection power. This upgrade will cause the emission of a substantially increased intensity of neutron radiation for a substantially increased amount of time upon operation of the device. Existing shielding and activation precautions are shown to prove insufficient in some regards, and recommendations for improvements are made, including the following areas: shielding doors to MAST shielded facility enclosure (known as "the blockhouse"); north access tunnel; blockhouse roof; west cabling duct. In addition, some specific neutronic dose rate questions are addressed and answered; those discussed here relate to shielding penetrations and dose rate reflected from the air above the device ("skyshine").

Neutronics Analysis of the ITER In-Vessel Viewing System

The In-Vessel Viewing System (IVVS) in ITER consists of six identical units which are deployed between pulses or during shutdown, to perform visual examination and metrology of plasma facing components. The system is housed in dedicated ports at B1 level, with deployment at the level between the divertor cassettes and the lowermost outboard blanket modules. Boron carbide shielding blocks are envisaged to protect the sensitive components of the IVVS from damage during operations, and personnel from radiation fields. In order to progress the design of the IVVS beyond the pre-conceptual stage, analyses were conducted using MCNP to determine the acceptability of a series of different shielding configurations.

Simplifying the Development, Use and Sustainability of HPC Software

Developing software to undertake complex, compute-intensive scientific processes requires a challenging combination of both specialist domain knowledge and software development skills to convert this knowledge into efficient code. As computational platforms become increasingly heterogeneous and newer types of platform such as Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) cloud computing become more widely accepted for HPC computations, scientists require more support from computer scientists and resource providers to develop efficient code and make optimal use of the resources available to them. As part of the libhpc stage 1 and 2 projects we are developing a framework to provide a richer means of job specification and efficient execution of complex scientific software on heterogeneous infrastructure. The use of such frameworks has implications for the sustainability of scientific software. In this paper we set out our developing understanding of these challenges based on work carried out in the libhpc project.
