Inverse wave scattering in the Laplace domain: a factorization method approach

Let $Δ_Λ\le λ_Λ$ be a semi-bounded self-adjoint realization of the Laplace operator with boundary conditions (Dirichlet, Neumann, semi-transparent) assigned on the Lipschitz boundary of a bounded obstacle $Ω$. Let $u^Λ_{f}$ and $u^{0}_{f}$ denote the solutions of the wave equations corresponding to $Δ_Λ$ and to the free Laplacian $Δ$ respectively, with a source term $f$ concentrated at time $t=0$ (a pulse). We show that for any fixed $λ>λ_Λ\ge 0$ and any fixed $B\subset\subset{\mathbb R}^{n}\backslash\barΩ$, the obstacle $Ω$ can be reconstructed by the data $$ F^Λ_λf(x):=\int_{0}^{\infty}e^{-\sqrtλ\,t}\big(u^Λ_{f}(t,x)-u^{0}_{f}(t,x)\big)\,dt\,,\qquad x\in B\,,\ f\in L^{2}({\mathbb R}^{n})\,,\ \mbox{supp}(f)\subset B\,. $$ A similar result holds in the case of screens reconstruction, when the boundary conditions are assigned only on a part of the boundary. Our method exploits the factorized form of the resolvent difference $(-Δ_Λ+λ)^{-1}-(-Δ+λ)^{-1}$.

Scattering from local deformations of a semitransparent plane

We study scattering for the couple $(A_{F},A_{0})$ of Schrödinger operators in $L^2(\mathbb{R}^3)$ formally defined as $A_0 = -Δ+ α\, δ_{π_0}$ and $A_F = -Δ+ α\, δ_{π_F}$, $α>0$, where $δ_{π_F}$ is the Dirac $δ$-distribution supported on the deformed plane given by the graph of the compactly supported, Lipschitz continuous function $F:\mathbb{R}^{2}\to\mathbb{R}$ and $π_{0}$ is the undeformed plane corresponding to the choice $F\equiv 0$. We provide a Limiting Absorption Principle, show asymptotic completeness of the wave operators and give a representation formula for the corresponding Scattering Matrix $S_{F}(λ)$. Moreover we show that, as $F\to 0$, $\|S_{F}(λ)-\mathsf 1\|^{2}_{\mathfrak{B}(L^{2}({\mathbb S}^{2}))}={\mathcal O}\!\left(\int_{\mathbb{R}^{2}}d\textbf{x}|F(\textbf{x})|^γ\right)$, $0<γ<1$. We correct a minor mistake in the computation of the scattering matrix, occurring in the published version of this paper (see J. Math. Anal. Appl. 473(1) (2019), pp. 215-257). The mistake was in Section 7, and affected the statement of Corollary 7.2, specifically, Eq. (7.8). Regrettably the formula for $S_F$ in the Corrigendum J. Math. Anal. Appl. 482(1) (2020), 123554, still contains a misprint, the correct expression is the one given here.

The semi-classical limit with a delta-prime potential

We consider the quantum evolution $e^{-i\frac{t}{\hbar}H_β} ψ_ξ^{\hbar}$ of a Gaussian coherent state $ψ_ξ^{\hbar}\in L^{2}(\mathbb{R})$ localized close to the classical state $ξ\equiv (q,p) \in \mathbb{R}^{2}$, where $H_β$ denotes a self-adjoint realization of the formal Hamiltonian $-\frac{\hbar^{2}}{2m}\,\frac{d^{2}\,}{dx^{2}} + β\,δ'_{0}$, with $δ'_{0}$ the derivative of Dirac's delta distribution at $x = 0$ and $β$ a real parameter. We show that in the semi-classical limit such a quantum evolution can be approximated (w.r.t. the $L^{2}(\mathbb{R})$-norm, uniformly for any $t \in \mathbb{R}$ away from the collision time) by $e^{\frac{i}{\hbar} A_{t}} e^{it L_{B}} ϕ^{\hbar}_{x}$, where $A_{t} = \frac{p^{2}t}{2m}$, $ϕ_{x}^{\hbar}(ξ) := ψ^{\hbar}_ξ(x)$ and $L_{B}$ is a suitable self-adjoint extension of the restriction to $\mathcal{C}^{\infty}_{c}({\mathscr M}_{0})$, ${\mathscr M}_{0} := \{(q,p) \in \mathbb{R}^{2}\,|\,q \neq 0\}$, of ($-i$ times) the generator of the free classical dynamics. While the operator $L_{B}$ here utilized is similar to the one appearing in our previous work [C. Cacciapuoti, D. Fermi, A. Posilicano, The semi-classical limit with a delta potential, Annali di Matematica Pura e Applicata (2020)] regarding the semi-classical limit with a delta potential, in the present case the approximation gives a smaller error: it is of order $\hbar^{7/2-λ}$, $0 < λ< 1/2$, whereas it turns out to be of order $\hbar^{3/2-λ}$, $0 < λ< 3/2$, for the delta potential. We also provide similar approximation results for both the wave and scattering operators.

Inverse Scattering for the Laplace operator with boundary conditions on Lipschitz surfaces

We provide a general scheme, in the combined frameworks of Mathematical Scattering Theory and Factorization Method, for inverse scattering for the couple of self-adjoint operators $(\widetildeΔ,Δ)$, where $Δ$ is the free Laplacian in $L^{2}({\mathbb R}^{3})$ and $\widetildeΔ$ is one of its singular perturbations, i.e., such that the set $\{u\in H^{2}({\mathbb R}^{3})\cap \text{dom}(\widetildeΔ)\, :\, Δu=\widetildeΔu\}$ is dense. Typically $\widetildeΔ$ corresponds to a self-adjoint realization of the Laplace operator with some kind of boundary conditions imposed on a null subset; in particular our results apply to standard, either separating or semi-transparent, boundary conditions at $Γ=\partialΩ$, where $Ω\subset{\mathbb R}^{3}$ is a bounded Lipschitz domain. Similar results hold in the case the boundary conditions are assigned only on $Σ\subsetΓ$, a relatively open subset with a Lipschitz boundary. We show that either $Γ$ or $Σ$ are determined by the knowledge of the Scattering Matrix, equivalently of the Far Field Operator, at a single frequency.

The semi-classical limit with delta potentials

We consider the semi-classical limit of the quantum evolution of Gaussian coherent states whenever the Hamiltonian $\mathsf H$ is given, as sum of quadratic forms, by $\mathsf H= -\frac{\hbar^{2}}{2m}\,\frac{d^{2}\,}{dx^{2}}\,\dot{+}\,αδ_{0}$, with $α\in\mathbb R$ and $δ_{0}$ the Dirac delta-distribution at $x=0$. We show that the quantum evolution can be approximated, uniformly for any time away from the collision time and with an error of order $\hbar^{3/2-λ}$, $0\!<\!λ\!<\!3/2$, by the quasi-classical evolution generated by a self-adjoint extension of the restriction to $\mathcal C^{\infty}_{c}({\mathscr M}_{0})$, ${\mathscr M}_{0}:=\{(q,p)\!\in\!\mathbb R^{2}\,|\,q\!\not=\!0\}$, of ($-i$ times) the generator of the free classical dynamics; such a self-adjoint extension does not correspond to the classical dynamics describing the complete reflection due to the infinite barrier. Similar approximation results are also provided for the wave and scattering operators.

On inverses of Krein's Q-functions

Let $A_{Q}$ be the self-adjoint operator defined by the $Q$-function $Q:z\mapsto Q_{z}$ through the Krein-like resolvent formula $$(-A_{Q}+z)^{-1}= (-A_{0}+z)^{-1}+G_{z}WQ_{z}^{-1}VG_{\bar z}^{*}\,,\quad z\in Z_{Q}\,,$$ where $V$ and $W$ are bounded operators and $$Z_{Q}:=\{z\inρ(A_{0}):\text{$Q_{z}$ and $Q_{\bar z }$ have a bounded inverse}\}\,.$$ We show that $$Z_{Q}\not=\emptyset\quad\Longrightarrow\quad Z_{Q}=ρ(A_{0})\cap ρ(A_{Q})\,.$$ We do not suppose that $Q$ is represented in terms of a uniformly strict, operator-valued Nevanlinna function (equivalently, we do not assume that $Q$ is associated to an ordinary boundary triplet), thus our result extends previously known ones. The proof relies on simple algebraic computations stemming from the first resolvent identity.

Relative-Zeta and Casimir energy for a semitransparent hyperplane selecting transverse modes

We study the relative zeta function for the couple of operators $A_0$ and $A_α$, where $A_0$ is the free unconstrained Laplacian in $L^2(\mathbf{R}^d)$ ($d \geq 2$) and $A_α$ is the singular perturbation of $A_0$ associated to the presence of a delta interaction supported by a hyperplane. In our setting the operatorial parameter $α$, which is related to the strength of the perturbation, is of the kind $α=α(-Δ_{\parallel})$, where $-Δ_{\parallel}$ is the free Laplacian in $L^2(\mathbf{R}^{d-1})$. Thus $α$ may depend on the components of the wave vector parallel to hyperplane; in this sense $A_α$ describes a semitransparent hyperplane selecting transverse modes. As an application we give an expression for the associated thermal Casimir energy. Whenever $α=χ_{I}(-Δ_{\parallel})$, where $χ_{I}$ is the characteristic function of an interval $I$, the thermal Casimir energy can be explicitly computed.

The 1-D Dirac equation with concentrated nonlinearity

We define and study the Cauchy problem for a 1-D nonlinear Dirac equation with nonlinearities concentrated at one point. Global well-posedness is provided and conservation laws for mass and energy are shown. Several examples, including nonlinear Gesztesy-Šeba models and the concentrated versions of the Bragg Resonance, Gross-Neveu, and Soler type models, all within the scope of the present paper, are given. The key point of the proof consists in the reduction of the original equation to a nonlinear integral equation for an auxiliary, space-independent variable (the "charge").

Time dependent delta-prime interactions in dimension one

We solve the Cauchy problem for the Schrödinger equation corresponding to the family of Hamiltonians $H_{γ(t)}$ in $L^{2}(\mathbb{R})$ which describes a $δ'$-interaction with time-dependent strength $1/γ(t)$. We prove that the strong solution of such a Cauchy problem exits whenever the map $t\mapstoγ(t)$ belongs to the fractional Sobolev space $H^{3/4}(\mathbb{R})$, thus weakening the hypotheses which would be required by the known general abstract results. The solution is expressed in terms of the free evolution and the solution of a Volterra integral equation.

Nonlinear Maximal Monotone Extensions of Symmetric Operators

Given a linear semi-bounded symmetric operator $S\ge -ω$, we explicitly define, and provide their nonlinear resolvents, nonlinear maximal monotone operators $A_Θ$ of type $λ>ω$ (i.e. generators of one-parameter continuous nonlinear semi-groups of contractions of type $λ$) which coincide with the Friedrichs extension of $S$ on a convex set containing ${\mathscr D}(S)$. The extension parameter $Θ\subset{\mathfrak h}\times{\mathfrak h}$ ranges over the set of nonlinear maximal monotone relations on an auxiliary Hilbert space $\mathfrak h$ isomorphic to the deficiency subspace of $S$. Moreover $A_Θ+λ$ is a sub-potential operator (i.e. is the sub-differential of a lower semicontinuos convex function) whenever $Θ$ is sub-potential. Examples describing Laplacians with nonlinear singular perturbations supported on null sets and Laplacians with nonlinear boundary conditions on a bounded set are given.

Markovian Extensions of Symmetric Second Order Elliptic Differential Operators

Let $Ω\subset{\mathbb R}^n$ be bounded with a smooth boundary $Γ$ and let $S$ be the symmetric operator in $L^2(Ω)$ given by the minimal realization of a second order elliptic differential operator. We give a complete classification of the Markovian self-adjoint extensions of $S$ by providing an explicit one-to-one correspondence between such extensions and the class of Dirichlet forms in $L^2(Γ)$ which are additively decomposable by the bilinear form of the Dirichlet-to-Neumann operator plus a Markovian form. By such a result two further equivalent classifications are provided: the first one is expressed in terms of an additive decomposition of the bilinear forms associated to the extensions, the second one uses the additive decomposition of the resolvents provided by Krein's formula. The Markovian part of the decomposition allows to characterize the operator domain of the corresponding extension in terms of Wentzell-type boundary conditions. Some properties of the extensions, and of the corresponding Dirichlet forms, semigroups and heat kernels, like locality, regularity, irreducibility, recurrence, transience, ultracontractivity and Gaussian bounds are also discussed.

On the many Dirichlet Laplacians on a non-convex polygon and their approximations by point interactions

By Birman and Skvortsov it is known that if $\Omegasf$ is a planar curvilinear polygon with $n$ non-convex corners then the Laplace operator with domain $H^2(\Omegasf)\cap H^1_0(\Omegasf)$ is a closed symmetric operator with deficiency indices $(n,n)$. Here we provide a Kre\uın-type resolvent formula for any self-adjoint extensions of such an operator, i.e. for the set of self-adjoint non-Friedrichs Dirichlet Laplacians on $\Omegasf$, and show that any element in this set is the norm resolvent limit of a suitable sequence of Friedrichs-Dirichlet Laplacians with $n$ point interactions.

On the spectral theory of Gesztesy-Šeba realizations of 1-D Dirac operators with point interactions on a discrete set

We investigate spectral properties of Gesztesy-Šeba realizations D_{X,α} and D_{X,β} of the 1-D Dirac differential expression D with point interactions on a discrete set $X=\{x_n\}_{n=1}^\infty\subset \mathbb{R}.$ Here $α:= \{α_{n}\}_{n=1}^\infty$ and β:=\{β_{n}\}_{n=1}^\infty \subset\mathbb{R}. The Gesztesy-Šeba realizations $D_{X,α}$ and $D_{X,β}$ are the relativistic counterparts of the corresponding Schrödinger operators $H_{X,α}$ and $H_{X,β}$ with $δ$- and $δ'$-interactions, respectively. We define the minimal operator D_X as the direct sum of the minimal Dirac operators on the intervals $(x_{n-1}, x_n)$. Then using the regularization procedure for direct sum of boundary triplets we construct an appropriate boundary triplet for the maximal operator $D_X^*$ in the case $d_*(X):=\inf\{|x_i-x_j| \,, i\not=j\} = 0$. It turns out that the boundary operators $B_{X,α}$ and $B_{X,β}$ parameterizing the realizations D_{X,α} and D_{X,β} are Jacobi matrices. These matrices substantially differ from the ones appearing in spectral theory of Schrödinger operators with point interactions. We show that certain spectral properties of the operators $D_{X,α}$ and $D_{X,β}$ correlate with the corresponding spectral properties of the Jacobi matrices $B_{X,α}$ and $B_{X,β}$, respectively. Using this connection we investigate spectral properties (self-adjointness, discreteness, absolutely continuous and singular spectra) of Gesztesy--{\vS}eba realizations. Moreover, we investigate the non-relativistic limit as the velocity of light $c\to\infty$. Most of our results are new even in the case $d_*(X)> 0.$

Self-adjoint, globally defined Hamiltonian operators for systems with boundaries

For a general self-adjoint Hamiltonian operator $H_0$ on the Hilbert space $L^2(\RE^d)$, we determine the set of all self-adjoint Hamiltonians $H$ on $L^2(\RE^d)$ that dynamically confine the system to an open set $Ω\subset \RE^d$ while reproducing the action of $ H_0$ on an appropriate operator domain. In the case $H_0=-Δ+V$ we construct these Hamiltonians explicitly showing that they can be written in the form $H=H_0+ B$, where $B$ is a singular boundary potential and $H$ is self-adjoint on its maximal domain. An application to the deformation quantization of one-dimensional systems with boundaries is also presented.

Wave Equations with Point Interactions in Finite Energy Space

Given the abstract wave equation $\ddotϕ-Δ_αϕ=0$, where $Δ_α$ is the Laplace operator with a point interaction of strength $α$, we define and study $\bar W_α$, the associated wave generator in the phase space of finite energy states. We prove the existence of the phase flow generated by $\bar W_α$, and describe its most relevant properties with particular emphasis on the associated symplectic structure and scattering theory
