Well posedness of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation with isolated singularities

We study the well posedness of the nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation with a point interaction and power nonlinearity in dimension two and three. Behind the autonomous interest of the problem, this is a model of the evolution of so called singular solutions that are well known in the analysis of semilinear elliptic equations. We show that the Cauchy problem for the NLS considered enjoys local existence and uniqueness of strong (operator domain) solutions, and that the solutions depend continuously from initial data. In dimension two well posedness holds for any power nonlinearity and global existence is proved for powers below the cubic. In dimension three local and global well posedness are restricted to low powers.

Standing waves of the quintic NLS equation on the tadpole graph

The tadpole graph consists of a circle and a half-line attached at a vertex. We analyze standing waves of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation with quintic power nonlinearity equipped with the Neumann-Kirchhoff boundary conditions at the vertex. The profile of the standing wave with the frequency $ω\in (-\infty,0)$ is characterized as a global minimizer of the quadratic part of energy constrained to the unit sphere in $L^6$. The set of minimizers includes the set of ground states of the system, which are the global minimizers of the energy at constant mass ($L^2$-norm), but it is actually wider. While ground states exist only for a certain interval of masses, the standing waves exist for every $ω\in (-\infty,0)$ and correspond to a bigger interval of masses. It is shown that there exist critical frequencies $ω_0$ and $ω_1$ such that the standing waves are the ground states for $ω\in [ω_0,0)$, local minimizers of the energy at constant mass for $ω\in (ω_1,ω_0)$, and saddle points of the energy at constant mass for $ω\in (-\infty,ω_1)$. Proofs make use of both the variational methods and the analytical theory for differential equations.

The 1-D Dirac equation with concentrated nonlinearity

We define and study the Cauchy problem for a 1-D nonlinear Dirac equation with nonlinearities concentrated at one point. Global well-posedness is provided and conservation laws for mass and energy are shown. Several examples, including nonlinear Gesztesy-Šeba models and the concentrated versions of the Bragg Resonance, Gross-Neveu, and Soler type models, all within the scope of the present paper, are given. The key point of the proof consists in the reduction of the original equation to a nonlinear integral equation for an auxiliary, space-independent variable (the "charge").

Asymptotic stability for standing waves of a NLS equation with concentrated nonlinearity in dimension three. II

We investigate the asymptotic stability of standing waves for a model of Schrödinger equation with spatially concentrated nonlinearity in space dimension three. The nonlinearity studied is a power nonlinearity concentrated at the point $x=0$ obtained considering a contact (or $δ$) interaction with strength $α$, and letting the strength $α$ depend on the wavefunction in a prescribed way. For power nonlinearities in the range $(\frac{1}{\sqrt 2},1)$ there exist orbitally stable standing waves $Φ_ω$, and the linearization around them admits two imaginary eigenvalues which in principle could correspond to non decaying states, so preventing asymptotic relaxation towards an equilibrium orbit. Without using the Fermi Golden Rule we prove that, in the range $(\frac{1}{\sqrt 2},σ^*)$ for a certain $σ^* \in (\frac{1}{\sqrt{2}}, \frac{\sqrt{3} +1}{2 \sqrt{2}}]$, the dynamics near the orbit of a standing wave asymptotically relaxes towards a standing state. Contrarily to the main results in the field, the admitted nonlinearity is $L^2$-subcritical.

Stable standing waves for a NLS on star graphs as local minimizers of the constrained energy

On a star graph made of $N \geq 3$ halflines (edges) we consider a Schrödinger equation with a subcritical power-type nonlinearity and an attractive delta interaction located at the vertex. From previous works it is known that there exists a family of standing waves, symmetric with respect to the exchange of edges, that can be parametrized by the mass (or $L^2$-norm) of its elements. Furthermore, if the mass is small enough, then the corresponding symmetric standing wave is a ground state and, consequently, it is orbitally stable. On the other hand, if the mass is above a threshold value, then the system has no ground state. Here we prove that orbital stability holds for every value of the mass, even if the corresponding symmetric standing wave is not a ground state, since it is anyway a {\em local} minimizer of the energy among functions with the same mass. The proof is based on a new technique that allows to restrict the analysis to functions made of pieces of soliton, reducing the problem to a finite-dimensional one. In such a way, we do not need to use direct methods of Calculus of Variations, nor linearization procedures.

Bifurcations and stability of standing waves in the nonlinear Schrödinger equation on the tadpole graph

We develop a detailed rigorous analysis of edge bifurcations of standing waves in the nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation on a tadpole graph (a ring attached to a semi-infinite line subject to the Kirchhoff boundary conditions at the junction). It is shown in the recent work [7] by using explicit Jacobi elliptic functions that the cubic NLS equation on a tadpole graph admits a rich structure of standing waves. Among these, there are different branches of localized waves bifurcating from the edge of the essential spectrum of an associated Schrödinger operator. We show by using a modified Lyapunov-Schmidt reduction method that the bifur- cation of localized standing waves occurs for every positive power nonlinearity. We distinguish a primary branch of never vanishing standing waves bifurcating from the trivial solution and an infinite sequence of higher branches with oscillating behavior in the ring. The higher branches bifurcate from the branches of degenerate standing waves with vanishing tail outside the ring. Moreover, we analyze stability of bifurcating standing waves. Namely, we show that the primary branch is composed by orbitally stable standing waves for subcritical power nonlinearities, while all nontrivial higher branches are linearly unstable near the bifurcation point. The stability character of the degenerate branches remains inconclusive at the analytical level, whereas heuristic arguments based on analysis of embedded eigenvalues of negative Krein signatures support the conjecture of their linear instability at least near the bifurcation point. Numerical results for the cubic NLS equation show that this conjecture is valid and that the degenerate branches become spectrally stable far away from the bifurcation point.

Exactly solvable models and bifurcations: the case of the cubic $NLS$ with a $δ$ or a $δ'$ interaction

We explicitly give all stationary solutions to the focusing cubic NLS on the line, in the presence of a defect of the type Dirac's delta or delta prime. The models proves interesting for two features: first, they are exactly solvable and all quantities can be expressed in terms of elementary functions. Second, the associated dynamics is far from being trivial. In particular, the $NLS$ with a delta prime potential shows two symmetry breaking bifurcations: the first concerns the ground states and was already known. The second emerges on the first excited states, and up to now had not been revealed. We highlight such bifurcations by computing the nonlinear and the no-defect limits of the stationary solutions.

Nonlinear Schrödinger equation on graphs: recent results and open problems

In the present paper an introduction to the new subject of nonlinear dispersive hamiltonian equations on graphs is given. The focus is on recently established properties of solutions in the case of nonlinear Schrödinger equation. Special consideration is given to existence and behaviour of solitary solutions. Two subjects are discussed in some detail concerning NLS equation on a star graph: the standing waves of NLS equation on a graph with a $δ$ interaction at the vertex; the scattering of fast solitons through an Y-junction in the cubic case. The emphasis is on description of concepts and results and on physical context, without reporting detailed proofs; some perspectives and more ambitious open problems are discussed.

Constrained energy minimization and ground states for NLS with point defects

We investigate the ground states of the one-dimensional nonlinear Schrödinger equation with a defect located at a fixed point. The nonlinearity is focusing and consists of a subcritical power. The notion of ground state can be defined in several (often non-equivalent) ways. We define a ground state as a minimizer of the energy functional among the functions endowed with the same mass. This is the physically meaningful definition in the main fields of application of NLS. In this context we prove an abstract theorem that revisits the concentration-compactness method and which is suitable to treat NLS with inhomogeneities. Then we apply it to three models, describing three different kinds of defect: delta potential, delta prime interaction, and dipole. In the three cases we explicitly compute ground states and we show their orbital stability. This problem had been already considered for the delta and for the delta prime defect with a different constrained minimization problem, i.e. defining ground states as the minimizers of the action on the Nehari manifold. The case of dipole defect is entirely new.

On the structure of critical energy levels for the cubic focusing NLS on star graphs

We provide information on a non trivial structure of phase space of the cubic NLS on a three-edge star graph. We prove that, contrarily to the case of the standard NLS on the line, the energy associated to the cubic focusing Schrödinger equation on the three-edge star graph with a free (Kirchhoff) vertex does not attain a minimum value on any sphere of constant $L^2$-norm. We moreover show that the only stationary state with prescribed L^2-norm is indeed a saddle point.

Orbital and asymptotic stability for standing waves of a NLS equation with concentrated nonlinearity in dimension three

We begin to study in this paper orbital and asymptotic stability of standing waves for a model of Schrödinger equation with concentrated nonlinearity in dimension three. The nonlinearity is obtained considering a {point} (or contact) interaction with strength $α$, which consists of a singular perturbation of the laplacian described by a selfadjoint operator $H_α$, where the strength $α$ depends on the wavefunction: $i\dot u= H_αu$, $α=α(u)$. If $q$ is the so-called charge of the domain element $u$, i.e. the coefficient of its singular part, we let the strength $α$ depend on $u$ according to the law $α=-ν|q|^σ$, with $ν> 0$. This characterizes the model as a focusing NLS with concentrated nonlinearity of power type. For such a model we prove the existence of standing waves of the form $u (t)=e^{iωt}Φ_ω$, which are orbitally stable in the range $σ\in (0,1)$, and orbitally unstable for $σ\geq 1.$ Moreover, we show that for $σ\in (0,\frac{1}{\sqrt 2})$ every standing wave is asymptotically stable in the following sense. Choosing initial data close to the stationary state in the energy norm, and belonging to a natural weighted $L^p$ space which allows dispersive estimates, the following resolution holds: $u(t) = e^{iω_{\infty} t} Φ_{ω_{\infty}} +U_t*ψ_{\infty} +r_{\infty}, \quad \textrm{as} \;\; t \rightarrow +\infty$, where $U$ is the free Schrödinger propagator, $ω_{\infty} > 0$ and $ψ_{\infty}$, $r_{\infty} \in L^2(\R^3)$ with $\| r_{\infty} \|_{L^2} = O(t^{-5/4}) \quad \textrm{as} \;\; t \rightarrow +\infty$. Notice that in the present model the admitted nonlinearity for which asymptotic stability of solitons is proved is subcritical.

Stationary States of NLS on Star Graphs

We consider a generalized nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLS) with a power nonlinearity |ψ|^2μψ, of focusing type, describing propagation on the ramified structure given by N edges connected at a vertex (a star graph). To model the interaction at the junction, it is there imposed a boundary condition analogous to the δpotential of strength αon the line, including as a special case (α=0) the free propagation. We show that nonlinear stationary states describing solitons sitting at the vertex exist both for attractive (α<0, representing a potential well) and repulsive (α>0, a potential barrier) interaction. In the case of sufficiently strong attractive interaction at the vertex and power nonlinearity μ<2, including the standard cubic case, we characterize the ground state as minimizer of a constrained action and we discuss its orbital stability. Finally we show that in the free case, for even N only, the stationary states can be used to construct traveling waves on the graph.

Fast solitons on star graphs

We define the Schrödinger equation with focusing, cubic nonlinearity on one-vertex graphs. We prove global well-posedness in the energy domain and conservation laws for some self-adjoint boundary conditions at the vertex, i.e. Kirchhoff boundary condition and the so called $δ$ and $δ'$ boundary conditions. Moreover, in the same setting we study the collision of a fast solitary wave with the vertex and we show that it splits in reflected and transmitted components. The outgoing waves preserve a soliton character over a time which depends on the logarithm of the velocity of the ingoing solitary wave. Over the same timescale the reflection and transmission coefficients of the outgoing waves coincide with the corresponding coefficients of the linear problem. In the analysis of the problem we follow ideas borrowed from the seminal paper \cite{[HMZ07]} about scattering of fast solitons by a delta interaction on the line, by Holmer, Marzuola and Zworski; the present paper represents an extension of their work to the case of graphs and, as a byproduct, it shows how to extend the analysis of soliton scattering by other point interactions on the line, interpreted as a degenerate graph.

Stability and symmetry-breaking bifurcation for the ground states of a NLS with a $δ^\prime$ interaction

We determine and study the ground states of a focusing Schrödinger equation in dimension one with a power nonlinearity $|ψ|^{2μ} ψ$ and a strong inhomogeneity represented by a singular point perturbation, the so-called (attractive) $δ^\prime$ interaction, located at the origin. The time-dependent problem turns out to be globally well posed in the subcritical regime, and locally well posed in the supercritical and critical regime in the appropriate energy space. The set of the (nonlinear) ground states is completely determined. For any value of the nonlinearity power, it exhibits a symmetry breaking bifurcation structure as a function of the frequency (i.e., the nonlinear eigenvalue) $ω$. More precisely, there exists a critical value $\om^*$ of the nonlinear eigenvalue $\om$, such that: if $\om_0 < \om < \om^*$, then there is a single ground state and it is an odd function; if $\om > \om^*$ then there exist two non-symmetric ground states. We prove that before bifurcation (i.e., for $\om < \om^*$) and for any subcritical power, every ground state is orbitally stable. After bifurcation ($\om =\om^*+0$), ground states are stable if $μ$ does not exceed a value $μ^\star$ that lies between 2 and 2.5, and become unstable for $μ> μ^*$. Finally, for $μ> 2$ and $\om \gg \om^*$, all ground states are unstable. The branch of odd ground states for $\om < \om^*$ can be continued at any $\om > \om^*$, obtaining a family of orbitally unstable stationary states. Existence of ground states is proved by variational techniques, and the stability properties of stationary states are investigated by means of the Grillakis-Shatah-Strauss framework, where some non standard techniques have to be used to establish the needed properties of linearization operators.

Wave Equations with Point Interactions in Finite Energy Space

Given the abstract wave equation $\ddotϕ-Δ_αϕ=0$, where $Δ_α$ is the Laplace operator with a point interaction of strength $α$, we define and study $\bar W_α$, the associated wave generator in the phase space of finite energy states. We prove the existence of the phase flow generated by $\bar W_α$, and describe its most relevant properties with particular emphasis on the associated symplectic structure and scattering theory
