On discrepancy, intrinsic Diophantine approximation, and spectral gaps

In the present paper we establish bounds for the size of the spectral gap for actions of algebraic groups on certain homogeneous spaces. Our approach is based on estimating operator norms of suitable averaging operators, and we develop techniques for establishing both upper and lower bounds for such norms. We shall show that this analytic problem is closely related to the arithmetic problem of establishing bounds on the discrepancy of distribution for rational points on algebraic group varieties. As an application, we show how to establish an effective bound for property $τ$ of congruence subgroups of arithmetic lattices in algebraic groups which are forms of $SL(2)$, using estimates in intrinsic Diophantine approximation which follow from Heath-Brown's analysis of rational points on 3-dimensional quadratic surfaces.

Counting lattice points in norm balls on higher rank simple Lie groups

We establish an error estimate for counting lattice points in Euclidean norm balls (associated to an arbitrary irreducible linear representation) for lattices in simple Lie groups of real rank at least two. Our approach utilizes refined spectral estimates based on the existence of universal pointwise bounds for spherical functions on the groups involved. We focus particularly on the case of the special linear groups where we give a detailed proof of error estimates which constitute the first improvement of the best current bound established by Duke, Rudnick and Sarnak in 1991, and are nearly twice as good in some cases.

Horospherical coordinates of lattice points in hyperbolic space: effective counting and equidistribution

We establish effective counting and equidistribution results for lattice points in families of domains in hyperbolic spaces, of any dimension and over any field. The domains we focus on are defined as product sets with respect to the Iwasawa decomposition. Several classical Diophantine problems can be reduced to counting lattice points in such domains, including distribution of shortest solution to the gcd equation, and angular distribution of primitive vectors in the plane. We give an explicit and effective solution to these problems, and extend them to imaginary quadratic number fields. Further applications include counting lifts of closed horospheres to hyperbolic manifolds and establishing an equidistribution property of integral solutions to the Diophantine equation defined by a Lorentz form.

Best possible rates of distribution of dense lattice orbits in homogeneous spaces

The present paper establishes upper and lower bounds on the speed of approximation in a wide range of natural Diophantine approximation problems. The upper and lower bounds coincide in many cases, giving rise to optimal results in Diophantine approximation which were inaccessible previously. Our approach proceeds by establishing, more generally, upper and lower bounds for the rate of distribution of dense orbits of a lattice subgroup $Γ$ in a connected Lie (or algebraic) group $G$, acting on suitable homogeneous spaces $G/H$. The upper bound is derived using a quantitative duality principle for homogeneous spaces, reducing it to a rate of convergence in the mean ergodic theorem for a family of averaging operators supported on $H$ and acting on $G/Γ$. In particular, the quality of the upper bound on the rate of distribution we obtain is determined explicitly by the spectrum of $H$ in the automorphic representation on $L^2(Γ\setminus G)$. We show that the rate is best possible when the representation in question is tempered, and show that the latter condition holds in a wide range of examples.

Diophantine approximation exponents on homogeneous varieties

Recent years have seen very important developments at the interface of Diophantine approximation and homogeneous dynamics. In the first part of the paper we give a brief exposition of a dictionary developed by Dani and Kleinbock-Margulis which relates Diophantine properties of vectors to distribution of orbits of flows on the space of unimodular lattices. In the second part of the paper we briefly describe an extension of this dictionary recently developed by the authors, which establishes an analogous dynamical correspondence for general lattice orbits on homogeneous spaces. We concentrate specifically on the problem of estimating exponents of Diophantine approximation by arithmetic lattices acting on algebraic varieties. In the third part of the paper, we exemplify our results by establishing explicit bounds for the Diophantine exponent of dense lattice orbits in a number of basic cases. These include the linear and affine actions on affine spaces, and the action on the variety of matrices of fixed determinant. In some cases, these exponents are shown to be best possible.

The lattice point counting problem on the Heisenberg groups

We consider the radial and Heisenberg-homogeneous norms on the Heisenberg groups given by $N_{α,A}((z,t)) = \left(|z|^α+ A |t|^{α/2}\right)^{1/α}$, for $α\ge 2$ and $A>0$. This natural family includes the canonical Cygan-Korányi norm, corresponding to $α=4$. We study the lattice points counting problem on the Heisenberg groups, namely establish an error estimate for the number of points that the lattice of integral points has in a ball of large radius $R$. The exponent we establish for the error in the case $α=2$ is the best possible, in all dimensions.

Amenable equivalence relations and the construction of ergodic averages for group actions

We present a general new method for constructing pointwise ergodic sequences on countable groups, which is applicable to amenable as well as to non-amenable groups and treats both cases on an equal footing. The principle underlying the method is that both cases can be viewed as instances of the general ergodic theory of amenable equivalence relations.

Quantitative ergodic theorems and their number-theoretic applications

We present a survey of ergodic theorems for actions of algebraic and arithmetic groups recently established by the authors, as well as some of their applications. Our approach is based on spectral methods employing the unitary representation theory of the groups involved. This allows the derivation of ergodic theorems with a rate of convergence, an important phenomenon which does not arise in classical ergodic theory. Quantitative ergodic theorems give rise to new and previously inaccessible applications, and we demonstrate the remarkable diversity of such applications by presenting several number-theoretic results. These include, in particular, general uniform error estimates in lattice points counting problems, explicit estimates in sifting problems for almost-prime points on symmetric varieties, bounds for exponents of intrinsic Diophantine approximation, and results on fast distribution of dense orbits on homogeneous spaces.

von-Neumann and Birkhoff ergodic theorems for negatively curved groups

We prove maximal inequalities for concentric ball and spherical shell averages on a general Gromov hyperbolic group, in arbitrary probability preserving actions of the group. Under an additional condition, satisfied for example by all groups acting isometrically and properly discontinuously on CAT(-1) spaces, we prove a pointwise ergodic theorem with respect to a sequence of probability measures supported on concentric spherical shells.

Ergodic theory and the duality principle on homogeneous spaces

We prove mean and pointwise ergodic theorems for the action of a discrete lattice subgroup in a connected algebraic Lie group, on infinite volume homogeneous algebraic varieties. Under suitable necessary conditions, our results are quantitative, namely we establish rates of convergence in the mean and pointwise ergodic theorems, which can be estimated explicitly. Our results give a precise and in most cases optimal quantitative form to the duality principle governing dynamics on homogeneous spaces. We illustrate their scope in a variety of equidistribution problems.

Metric Diophantine approximation on homogeneous varieties

We develop the metric theory of Diophantine approximation on homogeneous varieties of semisimple algebraic groups and prove results analogous to the classical Khinchin and Jarnik theorems. In full generality our results establish simultaneous Diophantine approximation with respect to several completions, and Diophantine approximation over general number fields using S-algebraic integers. In several important examples, the metric results we obtain are optimal. The proof uses quantitative equidistribution properties of suitable averaging operators, which are derived from spectral bounds in automorphic representations.

Pointwise ergodic theorems beyond amenable groups

We prove pointwise and maximal ergodic theorems for probability measure preserving (p.m.p.) actions of any countable group, provided it admits an essentially free, weakly mixing amenable action of stable type $III_1$. We show that this class contains all irreducible lattices in connected semisimple Lie groups without compact factors. We also establish similar results when the stable type is $III_λ$, $0 < λ< 1$, under a suitable hypothesis. Our approach is based on the following two principles. First, we show that it is possible to generalize the ergodic theory of p.m.p. actions of amenable groups to include p.m.p. amenable equivalence relations. Second, we show that it is possible to reduce the proof of ergodic theorems for p.m.p. actions of a general group to the proof of ergodic theorems in an associated p.m.p. amenable equivalence relation, provided the group admits an amenable action with the properties stated above.

Splitting fields of elements in arithmetic groups

We prove that the number of unimodular integral matrices in a norm ball whose characteristic polynomial has Galois group different than the full symmetric group is of strictly lower order of magnitude than the number of all such matrices in the ball, as the radius increases. More generally, we prove a similar result for the Galois groups associated with elements in any connected semisimple linear algebraic group defined and simple over a number field $F$. Our method is based on the abstract large sieve method developed by Kowalski, and the study of Galois groups via reductions modulo primes developed by Jouve, Kowalski and Zywina. The two key ingredients are a uniform quantitative lattice point counting result, and a non-concentration phenomenon for lattice points in algebraic subvarieties of the group variety, both established previously by the authors. The results answer a question posed by Rivin and by Jouve, Kowalski and Zywina, who have considered Galois groups of random products of elements in algebraic groups.

The Poisson boundary of CAT(0) cube complex groups

We consider a finite-dimensional, locally finite CAT(0) cube complex X admitting a co-compact properly discontinuous countable group of automorphisms G. We construct a natural compact metric space B(X) on which G acts by homeomorphisms, the action being minimal and strongly proximal. Furthermore, for any generating probability measure on G, B(X) admits a unique stationary measure, and when the measure has finite logarithmic moment, it constitutes a compact metric model of the Poisson boundary. We identify a dense G-delta subset of B(X) on which the action of G is Borel-amenable, and describe the relation of these two spaces to the Roller boundary. Our construction can be used to give a simple geometric proof of Property A for the complex. Our methods are based on direct geometric arguments regarding the asymptotic behavior of half-spaces and their limiting ultrafilters, which are of considerable independent interest. In particular we analyze the notions of median and interval in the complex, and use the latter in the proof that B(X) is the Poisson boundary via the strip criterion developed by V. Kaimanovich.

Diophantine approximation and automorphic spectrum

The present paper establishes qunatitative estimates on the rate of diophantine approximation in homogeneous varieties of semisimple algebraic groups. The estimates established generalize and improve previous ones, and are sharp in a number of cases. We show that the rate of diophantine approximation is controlled by the spectrum of the automorphic representation, and is thus subject to the generalised Ramanujan conjectures.

Geometric covering arguments and ergodic theorems for free groups

We present a new approach to the proof of ergodic theorems for actions of free groups based on geometric covering and asymptotic invariance arguments. Our approach can be viewed as a direct generalization of the classical geometric covering and asymptotic invariance arguments used in the ergodic theory of amenable groups. We use this approach to generalize the existing maximal and pointwise ergodic theorems for free group actions to a large class of geometric averages which were not accessible by previous techniques. Some applications of our approach to other groups and other problems in ergodic theory are also briefly discussed.

On Arnold's and Kazhdan's equidistribution problems

We consider isometric actions of lattices in semisimple algebraic groups on (possibly non-compact) homogeneous spaces with (possibly infinite) invariant Radon measure. We assume that the action has a dense orbit, and demonstrate two novel and non-classical dynamical phenomena that arise in this context. The first is the existence of a mean ergodic theorem even when the invariant measure is infinite, which implies the existence of an associated limiting distribution, possibly different than the invariant measure. The second is uniform quantitative equidistribution of all orbits in the space, which follows from a quantitative mean ergodic theorem for such actions. In turn, these results imply quantitative ratio ergodic theorems for isometric actions of lattices. This sheds some unexpected light on certain equidistribution problems posed by Arnol'd and also on the equidistribution conjecture for dense subgroups of isometries formulated by Kazhdan. We briefly describe the general problem regarding ergodic theorems for actions of lattices on homogeneous spaces and its solution via the duality principle \cite{GN2}, and give a number of examples to demonstrate our results. Finally, we also prove results on quantitative equidistribution for transitive actions.
