Effective density for inhomogeneous quadratic forms II: fixed forms and generic shifts

We establish effective versions of Oppenheim's conjecture for generic inhomogeneous quadratic forms. We prove such results for fixed quadratic forms and generic shifts. Our results complement our companion paper where we considered generic forms and fixed shifts. In this paper, we use ergodic theorems and in particular we establish a strong spectral gap with effective bounds for some representations of orthogonal groups which do not possess Kazhdan's property (T).

Exact approximation order and well-distributed sets

We prove that for any proper metric space $X$ and a function $ψ:(0,\infty)\to(0,\infty)$ from a suitable class of approximation functions, the Hausdorff dimensions of the set $W_ψ(Q)$ of all points $ψ$-well-approximable by a well-distributed subset $Q\subset X$, and the set $E_ψ(Q)$ of points that are exactly $ψ$-approximable by $Q$, coincide. This answers in a general setting, a question of Beresnevich-Dickinson-Velani in the case of approximation of reals by rationals, and answered by Bugeaud in that case using the continued-fraction expansion of reals. Our main result applies in particular to approximation by orbits of fixed points of a wide class of discrete groups of isometries acting on the boundary of hyperbolic metric spaces.

$S$-arithmetic Inhomogeneous Diophantine approximation on manifolds

We prove $S$-arithmetic inhomogeneous Khintchine type theorems on analytic nondegenerate manifolds. The divergence case, which constitutes the main substance of this paper, is proved in the general context of Hausdorff measures using ubiquitous systems. For $S$ consisting of more than one prime, finite or infinite, the divergence results are new even in the homogeneous setting. We also prove the convergence case of the theorem, including in particular, the $S$-arithmetic inhomogeneous counterpart of the Baker-Sprindžuk conjectures using nondivergence estimates for flows on homogeneous spaces in conjunction with the transference principle of Beresnevich and Velani.

Effective density for inhomogeneous quadratic forms I: generic forms and fixed shifts

We establish effective versions of Oppenheim's conjecture for generic inhomogeneous quadratic forms. We prove such results for fixed shift vectors and generic quadratic forms. When the shift is rational we prove a counting result which implies the optimal density for values of generic inhomogeneous forms. We also obtain a similar density result for fixed irrational shifts satisfying an explicit Diophantine condition. The main technical tool is a formula for the second moment of Siegel transforms on certain congruence quotients of $\operatorname{SL}_n(\mathbb{R})$ which we believe to be of independent interest. In a sequel, we use different techniques to treat the companion problem concerning generic shifts and fixed quadratic forms.

Equidistribution on homogeneous spaces and the distribution of approximates in Diophantine approximation

The present paper is concerned with equidistribution results for certain flows on homogeneous spaces and related questions in Diophantine approximation. Firstly, we answer in the affirmative, a question raised by Kleinbock, Shi and Weiss regarding equidistribution of orbits of arbitrary lattices under diagonal flows and with respect to unbounded functions. We then consider the problem of Diophantine approximation with respect to rationals in a fixed number field. We prove a number field analogue of a famous result of W. M.Schmidt which counts the number of approximates to Diophantine inequalities for a certain class of approximating functions. Further we prove "spiraling" results for the distribution of approximates of Diophantine inequalities in number fields. This generalizes the work of Athreya, Ghosh and Tseng as well as Kleinbock, Shi and Weiss.

Best possible rates of distribution of dense lattice orbits in homogeneous spaces

The present paper establishes upper and lower bounds on the speed of approximation in a wide range of natural Diophantine approximation problems. The upper and lower bounds coincide in many cases, giving rise to optimal results in Diophantine approximation which were inaccessible previously. Our approach proceeds by establishing, more generally, upper and lower bounds for the rate of distribution of dense orbits of a lattice subgroup $Γ$ in a connected Lie (or algebraic) group $G$, acting on suitable homogeneous spaces $G/H$. The upper bound is derived using a quantitative duality principle for homogeneous spaces, reducing it to a rate of convergence in the mean ergodic theorem for a family of averaging operators supported on $H$ and acting on $G/Γ$. In particular, the quality of the upper bound on the rate of distribution we obtain is determined explicitly by the spectrum of $H$ in the automorphic representation on $L^2(Γ\setminus G)$. We show that the rate is best possible when the representation in question is tempered, and show that the latter condition holds in a wide range of examples.

Diophantine approximation exponents on homogeneous varieties

Recent years have seen very important developments at the interface of Diophantine approximation and homogeneous dynamics. In the first part of the paper we give a brief exposition of a dictionary developed by Dani and Kleinbock-Margulis which relates Diophantine properties of vectors to distribution of orbits of flows on the space of unimodular lattices. In the second part of the paper we briefly describe an extension of this dictionary recently developed by the authors, which establishes an analogous dynamical correspondence for general lattice orbits on homogeneous spaces. We concentrate specifically on the problem of estimating exponents of Diophantine approximation by arithmetic lattices acting on algebraic varieties. In the third part of the paper, we exemplify our results by establishing explicit bounds for the Diophantine exponent of dense lattice orbits in a number of basic cases. These include the linear and affine actions on affine spaces, and the action on the variety of matrices of fixed determinant. In some cases, these exponents are shown to be best possible.

Spiraling of approximations and spherical averages of Siegel transforms

We consider the question of how approximations satisfying Dirichlet's theorem spiral around vectors in $\mathbb{R}^d$. We give pointwise almost everywhere results (using only the Birkhoff ergodic theorem on the space of lattices). In addition, we show that for $\textit{every}$ unimodular lattice, on average, the directions of approximates spiral in a uniformly distributed fashion on the $d-1$ dimensional unit sphere. For this second result, we adapt a very recent proof of Marklof and Strömbergsson \cite{MS3} to show a spherical average result for Siegel transforms on $\operatorname{SL}_{d+1}(\mathbb{R})/\operatorname{SL}_{d+1}(\mathbb{Z})$. Our techniques are elementary. Results like this date back to the work of Eskin-Margulis-Mozes \cite{EMM} and Kleinbock-Margulis \cite{KM} and have wide-ranging applications. We also explicitly construct examples in which the directions are not uniformly distributed.

Metric Diophantine approximation on homogeneous varieties

We develop the metric theory of Diophantine approximation on homogeneous varieties of semisimple algebraic groups and prove results analogous to the classical Khinchin and Jarnik theorems. In full generality our results establish simultaneous Diophantine approximation with respect to several completions, and Diophantine approximation over general number fields using S-algebraic integers. In several important examples, the metric results we obtain are optimal. The proof uses quantitative equidistribution properties of suitable averaging operators, which are derived from spectral bounds in automorphic representations.

Projective metric number theory

In this paper we consider the probabilistic theory of Diophantine approximation in projective space over a completion of Q. Using the projective metric studied by Bombieri, van der Poorten, and Vaaler we prove the analogue of Khintchine's Theorem in projective space. For finite places and in higher dimension, we are able to completely remove the condition of monotonicity and establish the analogue of the Duffin-Schaeffer conjecture.

Diophantine approximation and automorphic spectrum

The present paper establishes qunatitative estimates on the rate of diophantine approximation in homogeneous varieties of semisimple algebraic groups. The estimates established generalize and improve previous ones, and are sharp in a number of cases. We show that the rate of diophantine approximation is controlled by the spectrum of the automorphic representation, and is thus subject to the generalised Ramanujan conjectures.
