Vertex separators, chordality and virtually free groups

In this paper we consider some results obtained for graphs using minimal vertex separators and generalized chordality and translate them to the context of Geometric Group Theory. Using these new tools, we are able to give two new characterizations for a group to be virtually free. Furthermore, we prove that the Baumslag-Solitar group $BS(1,n)$ is $k$-chordal for some $k$ if and only if $|n|<3$ and we give an application of generalized chordality to the study of the word problem.

Finite metric and $k$-metric bases on ultrametric spaces

Given a metric space $(X,d)$, a set $S\subseteq X$ is called a $k$-\emph{metric generator} for $X$ if any pair of different points of $X$ is distinguished by at least $k$ elements of $S$. A $k$-\emph{metric basis} is a $k$-metric generator of the minimum cardinality in $X$. We prove that ultrametric spaces do not have finite $k$-metric bases for $k>2$. We also characterize when the metric and 2-metric bases of an ultrametric space are finite and, when they are finite, we characterize them. Finally, we prove that an ultrametric space can be easily recovered knowing only the metric basis and the coordinates of the points in it.

Cheeger isoperimetric constant of Gromov hyperbolic manifolds and graphs

In this paper we study the relationship of hyperbolicity and (Cheeger) isoperimetric inequality in the context of Riemannian manifolds and graphs. We characterize the hyperbolic manifolds and graphs (with bounded local geometry) verifying this isoperimetric inequality, in terms of their Gromov boundary. Furthermore, we characterize the trees with isoperimetric inequality (without any hypothesis). As an application of our results, we obtain the solvability of the Dirichlet problem at infinity for these Riemannian manifolds and graphs, and that the Martin boundary is homeomorphic to the Gromov boundary.

A density-sensitive hierarchical clustering method

We define a hierarchical clustering method: $α$-unchaining single linkage or $SL(α)$. The input of this algorithm is a finite metric space and a certain parameter $α$. This method is sensitive to the density of the distribution and offers some solution to the so called chaining effect. We also define a modified version, $SL^*(α)$, to treat the chaining through points or small blocks. We study the theoretical properties of these methods and offer some theoretical background for the treatment of chaining effects.

Semiflows induced by length metrics: On the way to extinction

Bing and Moise proved, independently, that any Peano continuum admits a length metric d. We treat non-degenerate Peano continua with a length metric as evolution systems instead of stationary objects. For any compact length space (X, d) we consider a semiflow in the hyperspace $2^X$ of all non-empty closed sets in X. This semiflow starts with a canonical copy of the Peano continuum (X,d) at t = 0 and, at some time, collapses everything into a point. We study some properties of this semiflow for several classes of spaces, manifolds, graphs and finite polyhedra among them.

Real valued functions and metric spaces quasi-isometric to trees

We prove that if X is a complete geodesic metric space with uniformly generated first homology group and $f: X\to R$ is metrically proper on the connected components and bornologous, then X is quasi-isometric to a tree. Using this and adapting the definition of hyperbolic approximation we obtain an intrinsic sufficent condition for a metric space to be PQ-symmetric to an ultrametric space.

A metric between quasi-isometric trees

It is known that PQ-symmetric maps on the boundary characterize the quasi-isometry type of visual hyperbolic spaces, in particular, of geodesically complete \br-trees. We define a map on pairs of PQ-symmetric ultrametric spaces which characterizes the branching of the space. We also show that, when the ultrametric spaces are the corresponding end spaces, this map defines a metric between rooted geodesically complete simplicial trees with minimal vertex degree 3 in the same quasi-isometry class. Moreover, this metric measures how far are the trees from being rooted isometric.
