Massively parallel pixel-by-pixel nanophotonic optimization using a Green's function formalism

We introduce an efficient parallelization scheme to implement pixel-by-pixel nanophotonic optimization using a Green's function based formalism. The crucial insight in our proposal is the reframing of the optimization algorithm as a large-scale data processing pipeline, which allows for the efficient distribution of computational tasks across thousands of workers. We demonstrate the utility of our implementation by exercising it to optimize a high numerical aperture focusing metalens at problem sizes that would otherwise be far out of reach for the Green's function based method. Finally, we highlight the connection to powerful ideas from reinforcement learning as a natural corollary of reinterpreting the nanophotonic inverse design problem as a graph traversal enabled by the pixel-by-pixel optimization paradigm.

Topological properties of ferromagnetic superconductors

A variety of heavy fermion superconductors, such as UCoGe, UGe$_2$, and URhGe exhibit a striking coexistence of bulk ferromagnetism and superconductivity. In these systems, the magnetic moment decreases with pressure, and vanishes at a ferromagnetic quantum critical point (qcp). Remarkably, the superconductivity in UCoGe varies smoothly with pressure across the qcp and exists in both the ferromagnetic and paramagnetic regimes. We argue that in UCoGe, spin-orbit interactions stabilize a time-reversal invariant odd-parity superconductor in the high pressure paramagnetic regime. Based on a simple phenomenological model, we predict that the transition from the paramagnetic normal state to the phase where superconductivity and ferromagnetism coexist, is a first-order transition.

Large electropositive cations as surfactants for the growth of polar epitaxial films

Using density functional theory (DFT) we demonstrate that the adsorption of large cations such as potassium or cesium facilitates the epitaxial growth of polar LaAlO$_3$ (LAO) on SrTiO$_3$ (STO). The low ionization potential of K favors efficient electron transfer to the STO conduction band and results in a 2D electron gas which exactly compensates for the diverging potential with increasing layer thickness. For large cations like K or Cs, DFT total energy considerations show that they remain adsorbed on the LAO surface and do not enter substitutionally into LAO. These results suggest a novel scheme for growing clean LAO/STO interface systems, and polar systems in general, by performing the growth process in the presence of large, low ionization potential alkali metal ions.

Phonon-assisted carrier motion on the Wannier-Stark ladder

It is well known that at zero temperature and in the absence of electron-phonon coupling, the presence of an electric field leads to localization of carriers residing in a single band of finite bandwidth. We implement the Self-Consistent Born Approximation (SCBA) to study the effect of weak electron-phonon coupling on the motion of a carrier in a biased system. At moderate and strong electron-phonon coupling we supplement the SCBA, describing the string of phonons left behind by the carrier, with the Momentum Average (MA) approximation to describe the phonon cloud that accompanies the resulting polaron. We find that coupling to the lattice delocalizes the carrier, as expected, although long-lived resonances resulting from the Wannier-Stark states of the polaron may appear in the spectrum in certain regions of the parameter space. The approach we propose here can also be used to implement and check the validity of simple variational approximations.
