Instantaneous Type I blow-up and non-uniqueness of smooth solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations

For any smooth, divergence-free initial data, we construct a solution of the Navier--Stokes equations that exhibits Type~I blow-up of the $L^\infty$ norm at time $T_*>0$, while remaining smooth in space and time on $\mathbb T^d\times([0,T]\setminus\{T_*\})$. An instantaneous injection of energy from infinite wavenumber initiates a bifurcation from the classical solution, producing an infinite family of spatially smooth solutions with the same data and thereby violating uniqueness of the Cauchy problem. A key ingredient is the first known construction of a complete inverse energy cascade realized by a classical Navier--Stokes flow, which transfers energy from infinitely high to low frequencies. The result holds in all dimensions $d\geq2$.

Anomalous Dissipation at Onsager-Critical Regularity

We construct solutions to the three-dimensional Euler equations exhibiting anomalous dissipation in finite time through a vanishing viscosity limit. Inspired by \cite{BDL23} and \cite{cheskidov2023dissipation}, we extend the \(2\frac{1}{2}\)-dimensional constructions and establish an Onsager-critical energy criterion adapted to such flows, showing its sharpness. Moreover, we provide a fully three-dimensional dissipative Euler example, sharp in Onsager's sense, driven by a slightly rough external force, following the framework of \cite{CL21}.

Global boundedness and absorbing sets in two-dimensional chemotaxis-Navier-Stokes systems with weakly singular sensitivity and a sub-logistic source

This paper studies the following chemotaxis-fluid system in a two-dimensional bounded domain $Ω$: \begin{equation*} \begin{cases} n_t + u \cdot \nabla n &= Δn - χ\nabla \cdot \left (n \frac{\nabla c}{c^k} \right ) + r n - \frac{μn^2}{\log^η(n+e)}, c_t + u \cdot \nabla c &= Δc - αc + βn, u_t + u \cdot \nabla u &= Δu - \nabla P + n \nabla ϕ+ f, \nabla \cdot u &= 0, \end{cases} \end{equation*} where $r, μ, α, β, χ$ are positive parameters, $k, η\in (0,1)$, $ϕ\in W^{2,\infty}(Ω)$, and $f \in C^1\left(\barΩ\times [0, \infty)\right) \cap L^\infty\left(Ω\times (0, \infty)\right)$. We show that, under suitable conditions on the initial data and with no-flux/no-flux/Dirichlet boundary conditions, this system admits a globally bounded classical solution. Furthermore, the system possesses an absorbing set in the topology of $C^0(\barΩ) \times W^{1, \infty}(Ω) \times C^0(\barΩ; \mathbb{R}^2)$.

Extreme temporal intermittency in the linear Sobolev transport: almost smooth nonunique solutions

In this paper, we revisit the notion of temporal intermittency to obtain sharp nonuniqueness results for linear transport equations. We construct divergence-free vector fields with sharp Sobolev regularity $L^1_t W^{1,p}$ for all $p<\infty$ in space dimensions $d\geq 2$ whose transport equations admit nonunique weak solutions belonging to $L^p_tC^k$ for all $p<\infty$ and $k\in \mathbb{N}$. In particular, our result shows that the time-integrability assumption in the uniqueness of the DiPerna-Lions theory is sharp. The same result also holds for transport-diffusion equations with diffusion operators of arbitrarily large order in any dimensions $d \geq 2$.

Stationary and discontinuous weak solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations

We prove that there exists a nontrivial finite energy periodic stationary weak solution to the 3D Navier-Stokes equations (NSE). The construction relies on a convex integration scheme utilizing new stationary building blocks designed specifically for the NSE. The constructed family of approximate stationary solutions is also used to prove the existence of weak solutions of the NSE with energy profiles discontinuous on a dense set of positive Lebesgue measure.

Global attractor for a Ginzburg-Landau type model of rotating Bose-Einstein condensates

We study the long time behavior of solutions to a nonlinear partial differential equation arising in the description of trapped rotating Bose-Einstein condensates. The equation can be seen as a hybrid between the well-known nonlinear Schrödinger/Gross-Pitaevskii equation and the Ginzburg-Landau equation. We prove existence and uniqueness of global in-time solutions in the physical energy space and establish the existence of a global attractor within the associated dynamics. We also obtain basic structural properties of the attractor and an estimate on its Hausdorff and fractal dimensions.

Degenerate pullback attractors for the 3D Navier-Stokes equations

As in our previous paper, the 3D Navier-Stokes equations with a translationally bounded force contain pullback attractors in a weak sense. Moreover, those attractors consist of complete bounded trajectories. In this paper, we present a sufficient condition under which the pullback attractors are degenerate. That is, if the Grashof constant is small enough, the pullback attractor will be a single point on a unique, complete, bounded, strong solution. We then apply our results to provide a new proof of the existence of a unique, strong, periodic solution to the 3D Navier-Stokes with a small, periodic forcing term.

Ill-posedness of the Navier-Stokes and magneto-hydrodynamics systems

We demonstrate that the three dimensional incompressible magneto-hydrodynamics (MHD) system is ill-posed due to the discontinuity of weak solutions in a wide range of spaces. Specifically, we construct initial data which has finite energy and is small in certain spaces, such that any Leray-Hopf type of weak solution to the MHD system starting from this initial data is discontinuous at time $t=0$ in such spaces. An analogous result is also obtained for the Navier-Stokes equation which extends the previous result of ill-posedness in $\dot B^{-1}_{\infty,\infty}$ by Cheskidov and Shvydkoy to spaces that are not necessarily critical. The region of the spaces where the norm inflation occurs almost touches $L^2$.

Pullback Attractors for Generalized Evolutionary Systems

We give an abstract framework for studying nonautonomous PDEs, called a generalized evolutionary system. In this setting, we define the notion of a pullback attractor. Moreover, we show that the pullback attractor, in the weak sense, must always exist. We then study the structure of these attractors and the existence of a strong pullback attractor. We then apply our framework to both autonomous and nonautonomous evolutionary systems as they first appeared in earlier works by Cheskidov, Foias, and Lu. In this context, we compare the pullback attractor to both the global attractor (in the autonomous case) and the uniform attractor (in the nonautonomous case). Finally, we apply our results to the nonautonomous 3D Navier-Stokes equations on a periodic domain with a translationally bounded force. We show that the Leray-Hopf weak solutions form a generalized evolutionary system and must then have a weak pullback attractor.

Regularizing Effect of the Forward Energy Cascade in the Inviscid Dyadic Model

We study the inviscid dyadic model of the Euler equations and prove some regularizing properties of the nonlinear term that occur due to forward energy cascade. We show every solution must have 3/5 L^2-based (or 1/10 L^3-based) regularity for all positive time. We conjecture this holds up to Onsager's scaling, where the L^2-based exponent is 5/6 and the L^3-based exponent is 1/3.

Norm Inflation for Generalized Navier-Stokes Equations

We consider the incompressible Navier-Stokes equation with a fractional power $α\in[1,\infty)$ of the Laplacian in the three dimensional case. We prove the existence of a smooth solution with arbitrarily small in $\dot{B}_{\infty,p}^{-α}$ ($2<p \leq \infty$) initial data that becomes arbitrarily large in $\dot{B}_{\infty,\infty}^{-s}$ for all $s> 0$ in arbitrarily small time. This extends the result of Bourgain and Pavlović for the classical Navier-Stokes equation which utilizes the fact that the energy transfer to low modes increases norms with negative smoothness indexes. It is remarkable that the space $\dot{B}_{\infty,\infty}^{-α}$ is supercritical for $α>1$. Moreover, the norm inflation occurs even in the case $α\geq 5/4$ where the global regularity is known.

A continuous model for turbulent energy cascade

In this paper we introduce a new PDE model in frequency space for the inertial energy cascade that reproduces the classical scaling laws of Kolmogorov's theory of turbulence. Our point of view is based upon studying the energy flux through a continuous range of scales rather than the discrete set of dyadic scales. The resulting model is a variant of Burgers equation on the half line with a boundary condition which represents a constant energy input at integral scales. The viscous dissipation is modeled via a damping term. We show existence of a unique stationary solution, both in the viscous and inviscid cases, which replicates the classical dissipation anomaly in the limit of vanishing viscosity. A survey of recent developments in the deterministic approach to the laws of turbulence, and in particular, to Onsager's conjecture is given.

A unified approach to regularity problems for the 3D Navier-Stokes and Euler equations: the use of Kolmogorov's dissipation range

Motivated by Kolmogorov's theory of turbulence we present a unified approach to the regularity problems for the 3D Navier-Stokes and Euler equations. We introduce a dissipation wavenumber $Λ(t)$ that separates low modes where the Euler dynamics is predominant from the high modes where the viscous forces take over. Then using an indifferent to the viscosity technique we obtain a new regularity criterion which is weaker than every Ladyzhenskaya-Prodi-Serrin condition in the viscous case, and reduces to the Beale-Kato-Majda criterion in the inviscid case. In the viscous case we also we prove that Leray-Hopf solutions are regular provided $Λ\in L^{5/2}$, which improves our previous $Λ\in L^\infty$ condition. We also show that $Λ\in L^1$ for all Leray-Hopf solutions. Finally, we prove that Leray-Hopf solutions are regular when the time-averaged spatial intermittency is small, i.e., close to Kolmogorov's regime.
