Mean-Field Limits of Deterministic and Stochastic Flocking Models with Nonlinear Velocity Alignment

We study the mean-field limit for a class of agent-based models describing flocking with nonlinear velocity alignment. Each agent interacts through a communication protocol $ϕ$ and a non-linear coupling of velocities given by the power law $A(\bv) = |\bv|^{p-2}\bv$, $p > 2$. The mean-field limit is proved in two settings -- deterministic and stochastic. We then provide quantitative estimates on propagation of chaos for deterministic case in the case of the classical fat-tailed kernels, showing an improved convergence rate of the $k$-particle marginals to a solution of the corresponding Vlasov equation. The stochastic version is addressed with multiplicative noise depending on the local interaction intensity, which leads to the associated Fokker-Planck-Alignment equation. Our results extend the classical Cucker-Smale theory to the nonlinear framework which has received considerable attention in the literature recently.

Geometric Structure of Mass Concentration Sets for Pressureless Euler Alignment Systems

We study the limiting dynamics of the Euler Alignment system with a smooth, heavy-tailed interaction kernel $ϕ$ and unidirectional velocity $\mathbf{u} = (u, 0, \ldots, 0)$. We demonstrate a striking correspondence between the entropy function $e_0 = \partial_1 u_0 + ϕ*ρ_0$ and the limiting 'concentration set', i.e., the support of the singular part of the limiting density measure. In a typical scenario, a flock experiences aggregation toward a union of $C^1$ hypersurfaces: the image of the zero set of $e_0$ under the limiting flow map. This correspondence also allows us to make statements about the fine properties associated to the limiting dynamics, including a sharp upper bound on the dimension of the concentration set, depending only on the smoothness of $e_0$. In order to facilitate and contextualize our analysis of the limiting density measure, we also include an expository discussion of the wellposedness, flocking, and stability of the Euler Alignment system, most of which is new.

Multi-flocks: emergent dynamics in systems with multi-scale collective behavior

We study the multi-scale description of large-time collective behavior of agents driven by alignment. The resulting multi-flock dynamics arises naturally with realistic initial configurations consisting of multiple spatial scaling, which in turn peak at different time scales. We derive a `master-equation' which describes a complex multi-flock congregations governed by two ingredients: (i) a fast inner-flock communication; and (ii) a slow(-er) inter-flock communication. The latter is driven by macroscopic observables which feature the up-scaling of the problem. We extend the current mono-flock theory, proving a series of results which describe rates of multi-flocking with natural dependencies on communication strengths. Both agent-based, kinetic, and hydrodynamic descriptions are considered, with particular emphasis placed on the discrete and macroscopic descriptions.

Topologically-based fractional diffusion and emergent dynamics with short-range interactions

We introduce a new class of models for emergent dynamics. It is based on a new communication protocol which incorporates two main features: short-range kernels which restrict the communication to local geometric balls, and anisotropic communication kernels, adapted to the local density in these balls, which form topological neighborhoods. We prove flocking behavior -- the emergence of global alignment for regular, non-vacuous solutions of the $n$-dimensional models based on short-range topological communication. Moreover, global regularity (and hence unconditional flocking) of the one-dimensional model is proved via an application of a De Giorgi-type method. To handle the non-symmetric singular kernels that arise with our topological communication, we develop a new analysis for local fractional elliptic operators, interesting for its own sake, encountered in the construction of our class of models.

Unidirectional flocks in hydrodynamic Euler Alignment system II: Singular models

In this note we continue our study of unidirectional solutions to hydrodynamic Euler alignment systems with strongly singular communication kernels $ϕ(x):=|x|^{-(n+α)}$ for $α\in(0,2)$. The solutions describe unidirectional parallel motion of agents governing multi-dimensional collective behavior of flocks. Here, we consider the range $1<α<2$ and establish the global regularity of smooth solutions, together with a full description of their long time dynamics. Specifically, we develop the flocking theory of these solutions and show long time convergence to traveling wave with rapidly aligned velocity field.

Existence and stability of unidirectional flocks in hydrodynamic Euler Alignment systems

In this note we reveal new classes of solutions to hydrodynamic Euler alignment systems governing collective behavior of flocks. The solutions describe unidirectional parallel motion of agents, and are globally well-posed in multi-dimensional settings subject to a threshold condition similar to the one dimensional case. We develop the flocking and stability theory of these solutions and show long time convergence to traveling wave with rapidly aligned velocity field. In the context of multi-scale models introduced in \cite{ST-multi} our solutions can be superimposed into Mikado formations -- clusters of unidirectional flocks pointing in various directions. Such formations exhibit multiscale alignment phenomena and resemble realistic behavior of interacting large flocks.

Global existence and stability of nearly aligned flocks

We study regularity of a hydrodynamic singular model of collective behavior introduced in \cite{ST1}. In this note we address the question of global well-posedness in multi-dimensional settings. It is shown that any initial data $(u,ρ)$ with small velocity variations $|u(x) - u(y)| < \e$ relative to its higher order norms, gives rise to a unique global regular solution which aligns and flocks exponentially fast. Moreover, we prove that the limiting flocks are stable.

Eulerian dynamics with a commutator forcing

We study a general class of Euler equations driven by a forcing with a \emph{commutator structure} of the form $[\mathcal{L},\mathbf{u}](ρ)=\mathcal{L}(ρ\mathbf{u})- \mathcal{L}(ρ)\mathbf{u}$, where $\mathbf{u}$ is the velocity field and $\mathcal{L}$ is the "action" which belongs to a rather general class of translation invariant operators. Such systems arise, for example, as the hydrodynamic description of velocity alignment, where action involves convolutions with bounded, positive influence kernels, $\mathcal{L}_ϕ(f)=ϕ*f$. Our interest lies with a much larger class of $\mathcal{L}$'s which are neither bounded nor positive. In this paper we develop a global regularity theory in the one-dimensional setting, considering three prototypical sub-classes of actions. We prove global regularity for \emph{bounded} $ϕ$'s which otherwise are allowed to change sign. Here we derive sharp critical thresholds such that sub-critical initial data $(ρ_0,u_0)$ give rise to global smooth solutions. Next, we study \emph{singular} actions associated with $\mathcal{L}=-(-\partial_{xx})^{α/2}$, which embed the fractional Burgers' equation of order $α$. We prove global regularity for $α\in [1,2)$. Interestingly, the singularity of the fractional kernel $|x|^{-(n+α)}$, avoids an initial threshold restriction. Global regularity of the critical endpoint $α=1$ follows with double-exponential $W^{1,\infty}$-bounds. Finally, for the other endpoint $α=2$, we prove the global regularity of the Navier-Stokes equations with density-dependent viscosity associated with the \emph{local} $\mathcal{L}=Δ$.

The Energy Balance Relation for Weak solutions of the Density-Dependent Navier-Stokes Equations

We consider the incompressible inhomogeneous Navier-Stokes equations with constant viscosity coefficient and density which is bounded and bounded away from zero. We show that the energy balance relation for this system holds for weak solutions if the velocity, density, and pressure belong to a range Besov spaces of smoothness $1/3$. A density-dependent version of the classical Kármán-Howarth-Monin relation is derived.

Global regularity for 2D Muskat equations with finite slope

We consider the 2D Muskat equation for the interface between two constant density fluids in an incompressible porous medium, with velocity given by Darcy's law. We establish that as long as the slope of the interface between the two fluids remains bounded and uniformly continuous, the solution remains regular. The proofs exploit the nonlocal nonlinear parabolic nature of the equations through a series of nonlinear lower bounds for nonlocal operators. These are used to deduce that as long as the slope of the interface remains uniformly bounded, the curvature remains bounded. The nonlinear bounds then allow us to obtain local existence for arbitrarily large initial data in the class $W^{2,p}$, $1<p\leq \infty$. We provide furthermore a global regularity result for small initial data: if the initial slope of the interface is sufficiently small, there exists a unique solution for all time.

Global Well-Posedness Of A Non-Local Burgers Equation: The Periodic Case

This paper is concerned with the study of a non-local Burgers equation for positive bounded periodic initial data. The equation reads $$ u_t - u |\nabla| u + |\nabla|(u^2) = 0. $$ We construct global classical solutions starting from smooth positive data, and global weak solutions starting from data in $L^\infty$. We show that any weak solution is instantaneously regularized into $C^\infty$. We also describe the long-time behavior of all solutions. Our methods follow several recent advances in the regularity theory of parabolic integro-differential equations.

Homogeneous solutions to the 3D Euler system

We study stationary homogeneous solutions to the 3D Euler equation. The problem is motivated be recent exclusions of self-similar blowup for Euler and its relation to Onsager conjecture and intermittency. We reveal several new classes of solutions and prove rigidity properties in specific categories of genuinely 3D solutions. In particular, irrotational solutions are characterized by vanishing of the Bernoulli function; and tangential flows are necessarily 2D axisymmetric pure rotations. In several cases solutions are excluded altogether. The arguments reveal geodesic features of the Euler flow on the sphere. We further show that in the case when homogeneity corresponds to the Onsager-critical state, the anomalous energy flux at the singularity vanishes, which is suggestive of absence of extreme $0$-dimensional intermittencies in dissipative flows.

2D homogeneous solutions to the Euler equation

In this paper we study classification of homogeneous solutions to the stationary Euler equation with locally finite energy. Written in the form $u = \nabla^\perp Ψ$, $Ψ(r,θ) = r^λ ψ(θ)$, for $λ>0$, we show that only trivial solutions exist in the range $0<λ<1/2$, i.e. parallel shear and rotational flows. In other cases many new solutions are exhibited that have hyperbolic, parabolic and elliptic structure of streamlines. In particular, for $λ>9/2$ the number of different non-trivial elliptic solutions is equal to the cardinality of the set $(2,\sqrt{2λ}) \cap \mathbb{N}$. The case $λ= 2/3$ is relevant to Onsager's conjecture. We underline the reasons why no anomalous dissipation of energy occurs for such solutions despite their critical Besov regularity 1/3.

On the energy behavior of locally self-similar blowup for the Euler equation

In this note we study locally self-similar blow up for the Euler equation. The main result states that under a mild $L^p$-growth assumption on the profile $v$, namely, $\int_{|y| \sim L} |v|^p dy \lesssim L^{\g}$ for some $\g <p-2$, the self-similar solution carries a positive amount of energy up to the time of blow-up $T$, namely, $\int_{|y| \sim L} |v|^2 dy \sim L^{N-2\a}$. The result implies and extends several previously known exclusion criteria. It also supports a general conjecture relating fractal local dimensions of the energy measure with the rate of velocity growth at the time of possible blowup.

preprint2012arXiv

A study of energy concentration and drain in incompressible fluids

In this paper we examine two opposite scenarios of energy behavior for solutions of the Euler equation. We show that if $u$ is a regular solution on a time interval $[0,T)$ and if $u \in L^rL^\infty$ for some $r\geq \frac{2}{N}+1$, where $N$ is the dimension of the fluid, then the energy at the time $T$ cannot concentrate on a set of Hausdorff dimension samller than $N - \frac{2}{r-1}$. The same holds for solutions of the three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equation in the range $5/3<r<7/4$. Oppositely, if the energy vanishes on a subregion of a fluid domain, it must vanish faster than $(T-t)^{1-\d}$, for any $\d>0$. The results are applied to find new exclusions of locally self-similar blow-up in cases not covered previously in the literature.

On formation of a locally self-similar collapse in the incompressible Euler equations

The paper addresses the question of existence of a locally self-similar blow-up for the incompressible Euler equations. Several exclusion results are proved based on the $L^p$-condition for velocity or vorticity and for a range of scaling exponents. In particular, in $N$ dimensions if in self-similar variables $u \in L^p$ and $u \sim \frac{1}{t^{\a/(1+\a)}}$, then the blow-up does not occur provided $\a >N/2$ or $-1<\a\leq N/p$. This includes the $L^3$ case natural for the Navier-Stokes equations. For $\a = N/2$ we exclude profiles with an asymptotic power bounds of the form $ |y|^{-N-1+\d} \lesssim |u(y)| \lesssim |y|^{1-\d}$. Homogeneous near infinity solutions are eliminated as well except when homogeneity is scaling invariant.

A continuous model for turbulent energy cascade

In this paper we introduce a new PDE model in frequency space for the inertial energy cascade that reproduces the classical scaling laws of Kolmogorov's theory of turbulence. Our point of view is based upon studying the energy flux through a continuous range of scales rather than the discrete set of dyadic scales. The resulting model is a variant of Burgers equation on the half line with a boundary condition which represents a constant energy input at integral scales. The viscous dissipation is modeled via a damping term. We show existence of a unique stationary solution, both in the viscous and inviscid cases, which replicates the classical dissipation anomaly in the limit of vanishing viscosity. A survey of recent developments in the deterministic approach to the laws of turbulence, and in particular, to Onsager's conjecture is given.

A unified approach to regularity problems for the 3D Navier-Stokes and Euler equations: the use of Kolmogorov's dissipation range

Motivated by Kolmogorov's theory of turbulence we present a unified approach to the regularity problems for the 3D Navier-Stokes and Euler equations. We introduce a dissipation wavenumber $Λ(t)$ that separates low modes where the Euler dynamics is predominant from the high modes where the viscous forces take over. Then using an indifferent to the viscosity technique we obtain a new regularity criterion which is weaker than every Ladyzhenskaya-Prodi-Serrin condition in the viscous case, and reduces to the Beale-Kato-Majda criterion in the inviscid case. In the viscous case we also we prove that Leray-Hopf solutions are regular provided $Λ\in L^{5/2}$, which improves our previous $Λ\in L^\infty$ condition. We also show that $Λ\in L^1$ for all Leray-Hopf solutions. Finally, we prove that Leray-Hopf solutions are regular when the time-averaged spatial intermittency is small, i.e., close to Kolmogorov's regime.

Continuous spectrum of the 3D Euler equation is a solid annulus

In this note we give a description of the continuous spectrum of the linearized Euler equations in three dimensions. Namely, for all but countably many times $t\in \R$, the continuous spectrum of the evolution operator $G_t$ is given by a solid annulus with radii $e^{tμ}$ and $e^{t M}$, where $μ$ and $M$ are the smallest and largest, respectively, Lyapunov exponents of the corresponding bicharacteristic-amplitude system of ODEs.
