Lie Theory for Asymptotic Symmetries in General Relativity: The BMS Group

We study the Lie group structure of asymptotic symmetry groups in General Relativity from the viewpoint of infinite-dimensional geometry. To this end, we review the geometric definition of asymptotic simplicity and emptiness due to Penrose and the coordinate-wise definition of asymptotic flatness due to Bondi et al. Then we construct the Lie group structure of the Bondi--Metzner--Sachs (BMS) group and discuss its Lie theoretic properties. We find that the BMS group is regular in the sense of Milnor, but not real analytic. This motivates us to conjecture that it is not locally exponential. Finally, we verify the Trotter property as well as the commutator property. As an outlook, we comment on the situation of related asymptotic symmetry groups. In particular, the much more involved situation of the Newman--Unti group is highlighted, which will be studied in future work.

Lie Theory for Asymptotic Symmetries in General Relativity: The NU Group

We study the Newman--Unti (NU) group from the viewpoint of infinite-dimensional geometry. The NU group is a topological group in a natural coarse topology, but it does not become a manifold and hence a Lie group in this topology. To obtain a manifold structure we consider a finer Whitney-type topology. This turns the unit component of the NU group into an infinite-dimensional Lie group. We then study the Lie theoretic properties of this group. Surprisingly, the group operations of the full NU group become discontinuous, whence the NU group does not support a Lie group structure. The NU group contains the Bondi--Metzner--Sachs (BMS) group as a subgroup, whose Lie group structure was constructed in a previous article. It is well known that the NU Lie algebra splits into a direct sum of Lie ideals of the Lie algebras of the BMS group and conformal rescalings of scri. However, the lack of a Lie group structure on the NU group implies that the BMS group cannot be embedded as a Lie subgroup therein.

Continuity of Formal Power Series Products in Nonlinear Control Theory

Formal power series products appear in nonlinear control theory when systems modeled by Chen-Fliess series are interconnected to form new systems. In fields like adaptive control and learning systems, the coefficients of these formal power series are estimated sequentially with real-time data. The main goal of the present article is to prove the continuity and analyticity of such products with respect to several natural (locally convex) topologies on spaces of locally convergent formal power series in order to establish foundational properties behind these technologies. In addition, it is shown that a transformation group central to describing the output feedback connection is in fact an analytic Lie group in this setting with certain regularity properties.

Manifolds of mappings on cartesian products

Given smooth manifolds $M_1,\ldots, M_n$ (which may have a boundary or corners), a smooth manifold $N$ modeled on locally convex spaces and $α\in({\mathbb N}_0\cup\{\infty\})^n$, we consider the set $C^α(M_1\times\cdots\times M_n,N)$ of all mappings $f\colon M_1\times\cdots\times M_n\to N$ which are $C^α$ in the sense of Alzaareer. Such mappings admit, simultaneously, continuous iterated directional derivatives of orders $\leq α_j$ in the $j$th variable for $j\in\{1,\ldots, n\}$, in local charts. We show that $C^α(M_1\times\cdots\times M_n,N)$ admits a canonical smooth manifold structure whenever each $M_j$ is compact and $N$ admits a local addition. The case of non-compact domains is also considered.

Extending Whitney's extension theorem: nonlinear function spaces

We consider a global, nonlinear version of the Whitney extension problem for manifold-valued smooth functions on closed domains $C$, with non-smooth boundary, in possibly non-compact manifolds. Assuming $C$ is a submanifold with corners, or is compact and locally convex with rough boundary, we prove that the restriction map from everywhere-defined functions is a submersion of locally convex manifolds and so admits local linear splittings on charts. This is achieved by considering the corresponding restriction map for locally convex spaces of compactly-supported sections of vector bundles, allowing the even more general case where $C$ only has mild restrictions on inward and outward cusps, and proving the existence of an extension operator.

Complexifications of infinite-dimensional manifolds and new constructions of infinite-dimensional Lie groups

Let M be a real analytic manifold modeled on a locally convex space and K be a non-empty compact subset of M. We show that if an open neighborhood of K in M admits a complexification which is a regular topological space, then the germ of the latter (as a complex manifold) is uniquely determined. If M is regular and the complexified modeling space of M is normal, then a regular complexification exists for some neighborhood of K. For each (real or complex) analytic regular manifold M modeled on a metrizable locally convex space and Banach-Lie group H, this allows the group Germ(K,H) of germs of H-valued analytic maps around K in M to be turned into an analytic Lie group which is regular in Milnor's sense. A special case is a regular real analytic Lie group structure on the group of real analytic H-valued maps on a compact real analytic manifold M (which, previously, had only been treated in the convenient setting of analysis). Combining our results concerning groups of germs with an idea by Neeb and Wagemann, one can also obtain a regular Lie group structure on the group of all real analytic H-valued mappings on the real line.

Shape Analysis on Lie Groups with Applications in Computer Animation

Shape analysis methods have in the past few years become very popular, both for theoretical exploration as well as from an application point of view. Originally developed for planar curves, these methods have been expanded to higher dimensional curves, surfaces, activities, character motions and many other objects. In this paper, we develop a framework for shape analysis of curves in Lie groups for problems of computer animations. In particular, we will use these methods to find cyclic approximations of non-cyclic character animations and interpolate between existing animations to generate new ones.

The tame Butcher group

The Butcher group is a powerful tool to analyse integration methods for ordinary differential equations, in particular Runge--Kutta methods. Recently, a natural Lie group structure has been constructed for this group. Unfortunately, the associated topology is too coarse for some applications in numerical analysis. In the present paper, we propose to remedy this problem by replacing the Butcher group with the subgroup of all exponentially bounded elements. This "tame Butcher group" turns out to be an infinite-dimensional Lie group with respect to a finer topology. As a first application we then show that the correspondence of elements in the tame Butcher group with their associated B-series induces certain Lie group (anti)morphisms.

(Re)constructing Lie groupoids from their bisections and applications to prequantisation

This paper is about the relation of the geometry of Lie groupoids over a fixed compact manifold and the geometry of their (infinite-dimensional) bisection Lie groups. In the first part of the paper we investigate the relation of the bisections to a given Lie groupoid, where the second part is about the construction of Lie groupoids from candidates for their bisection Lie groups. The procedure of this second part becomes feasible due to some recent progress in the infinite-dimensional Frobenius theorem, which we heavily exploit. The main application to the prequantisation of (pre)symplectic manifolds comes from an integrability constraint of closed Lie subalgebras to closed Lie subgroups. We characterise this constraint in terms of a modified discreteness conditions on the periods of that manifold.

Character groups of Hopf algebras as infinite-dimensional Lie groups

In this article character groups of Hopf algebras are studied from the perspective of infinite-dimensional Lie theory. For a graded and connected Hopf algebra we construct an infinite-dimensional Lie group structure on the character group with values in a locally convex algebra. This structure turns the character group into a Baker--Campbell--Hausdorff--Lie group which is regular in the sense of Milnor. Furthermore, we show that certain subgroups associated to Hopf ideals become closed Lie subgroups of the character group. If the Hopf algebra is not graded, its character group will in general not be a Lie group. However, we show that for any Hopf algebra the character group with values in a weakly complete algebra is a pro-Lie group in the sense of Hofmann and Morris.

The diffeomorphism group of a non-compact orbifold

We endow the diffeomorphism group of a paracompact (reduced) orbifold with the structure of an infinite dimensional Lie group modelled on the space of compactly supported sections of the tangent orbibundle. For a second countable orbifold, we prove that this Lie group is C^0-regular and thus regular in the sense of Milnor. Furthermore an explicit characterization of the Lie algebra associated to the diffeomorphism group of an orbifold is given.

The Lie group of real analytic diffeomorphisms is not real analytic

We construct an infinite dimensional real analytic manifold structure for the space of real analytic mappings from a compact manifold to a locally convex manifold. Here a map is real analytic if it extends to a holomorphic map on some neighbourhood of the complexification of its domain. As is well known the construction turns the group of real analytic diffeomorphisms into a smooth locally convex Lie group. We prove then that the diffeomorphism group is regular in the sense of Milnor. In the inequivalent "convenient setting of calculus" the real analytic diffeomorphisms even form a real analytic Lie group. However, we prove that the Lie group structure on the group of real analytic diffeomorphisms is in general not real analytic in our sense.

Differentiable mappings on products with different degrees of differentiability in the two factors

We develop differential calculus of $C^{r,s}$-mappings on products of locally convex spaces and prove exponential laws for such mappings. As an application, we consider differential equations in Banach spaces depending on a parameter in a locally convex space. Under suitable assumptions, the associated flows are mappings of class $C^{r,s}$.
