We give a set of foundations for cellular $E_k$-algebras which are especially convenient for applications to homological stability. We provide conceptual and computational tools in this setting, such as filtrations, a homology theory for $E_k$-algebras with a Hurewicz theorem, CW approximations, and many spectral sequences, which shall be used for such applications in future papers.
In this note we prove that the Fulton-MacPherson compactification of configuration spaces of smooth manifolds can not be extended to topological manifolds in a natural manner, using recent work of Chen and Mann.
We explain the existence of a smooth $HP^2$-bundle over $S^4$ whose total space has nontrivial $\hat{A}$-genus. Combined with an argument going back to Hitchin, this answers a question of Schick and implies that the space of Riemannian metrics of positive sectional curvature on a closed manifold can have nontrivial higher rational homotopy groups.
We compute the set of framings of $W_{g,1} = D^{2n} \# (S^n \times S^n)^{\# g}$, up to homotopy and diffeomorphism relative to the boundary.
We completely describe the algebraic part of the rational cohomology of the Torelli groups of the manifolds $\#^g S^n \times S^n$ relative to a disc in a stable range, for $2n \geq 6$. Our calculation is also valid for $2n=2$ assuming that the rational cohomology groups of these Torelli groups are finite dimensional in a stable range.
We compute the first two symplectic quadratic K-theory groups of the integers, or equivalently, the first two stable homology groups of the group of symplectic integral matrices preserving the standard quadratic refinement. The main novelty in our calculation lies in its method, which is based on high-dimensional manifold theory.
We describe an $E_k$-cell structure on the free $E_{k+1}$-algebra on a point, and more generally describe how the May-Milgram filtration of $Ω^m Σ^m S^{k}$ lifts to a filtration of the free $E_{k+m}$-algebra on a point by iterated pushouts of free $E_k$-algebras.
We prove a new kind of stabilisation result, "secondary homological stability", for the homology of mapping class groups of orientable surfaces with one boundary component. These results are obtained by constructing CW approximations to the classifying spaces of these groups, in the category of $E_2$-algebras, which have no $E_2$-cells below a certain vanishing line.
Let $K$ be the K3 manifold. In this note, we discuss two methods to prove that certain generalized Miller--Morita--Mumford classes for smooth bundles with fiber $K$ are non-zero. As a consequence, we fill a gap in a paper of the first author, and prove that the homomorphism $Diff(K)\to π_0 Diff(K)$ does not split. One of the two methods of proof uses a result of Franke on the stable cohomology of arithmetic groups that strengthens work of Borel, and may be of independent interest.
