A homological approach to pseudoisotopy theory. I

We construct a zig-zag from the once delooped space of pseudoisotopies of a closed 2n2n-disc to the once looped algebraic KK-theory space of the integers and show that the maps involved are pp-locally (2n−4)(2n-4)-connected for n>3n>3 and large primes pp. The proof uses the computation of the stable homology of the moduli space of high-dimensional handlebodies due to Botvinnik--Perlmutter and is independent of the classical approach to pseudoisotopy theory based on Igusa's stability theorem and work of Waldhausen. Combined with a result of Randal-Williams, one consequence of this identification is a calculation of the rational homotopy groups of BDiff∂(D2n+1)\mathrm{BDiff}_\partial(D^{2n+1}) in degrees up to 2n−52n-5.

Diffeomorphisms of discs and the second Weiss derivative of BTop(-)

We compute the rational homotopy groups in degrees up to approximately 32\tfrac{3}{2}d of the group of diffeomorphisms of a closed d-dimensional disc fixing the boundary. Based on this we determine the optimal rational concordance stable range for high-dimensional discs, describe the rational homotopy type of BTop(d) in a range, and calculate the second rational derivative of the functor BTop(-) in the sense of Weiss' orthogonal calculus.

Mapping class groups of simply connected high-dimensional manifolds need not be arithmetic

It is well known that Sullivan showed that the mapping class group of a simply connected high-dimensional manifold is commensurable with an arithmetic group, but the meaning of "commensurable" in this statement seems to be less well known. We explain why this result fails with the now standard definition of commensurability by exhibiting a manifold whose mapping class group is not residually finite. We do not suggest any problem with Sullivan's result: rather we provide a gloss for it.

A note on rational homological stability for automorphisms of manifolds

By work of Berglund and Madsen, the rings of rational characteristic classes of fibrations and smooth block bundles with fibre D2n♯(Sn×Sn)♯gD^{2n}\sharp(S^n\times S^n)^{\sharp g}, relative to the boundary, are for 2n≥62n\ge 6 independent of gg in degrees ∗≤(g−6)/2*\le (g-6)/2. In this note, we explain how this range can be improved to ∗≤g−2*\le g-2 using cohomological vanishing results due to Borel and classical invariant theory. This implies that the analogous ring for smooth bundles is independent of gg in the same range, provided the degree is small compared to the dimension.

Characteristic numbers of manifold bundles over surfaces with highly connected fibers

We study smooth bundles over surfaces with highly connected almost parallelizable fiber MM of even dimension, providing necessary conditions for a manifold to be bordant to the total space of such a bundle and showing that, in most cases, these conditions are also sufficient. Using this, we determine the characteristic numbers realized by total spaces of bundles of this type, deduce divisibility constraints on their signatures and A^\hat{A}-genera, and compute the second integral cohomology of BDiff+(M){\rm BDiff}^+(M) up to torsion in terms of generalized Miller--Morita--Mumford classes. We also prove analogous results for topological bundles over surfaces with fiber MM and discuss the resulting obstructions to smoothing them.

Mapping class groups of highly connected (4k+2)(4k+2)-manifolds

We compute the mapping class group of the manifolds ♯g(S2k+1×S2k+1)\sharp^g(S^{2k+1}\times S^{2k+1}) for k>0k>0 in terms of the automorphism group of the middle homology and the group of homotopy (4k+3)(4k+3)-spheres. We furthermore identify its Torelli subgroup, determine the abelianisations, and relate our results to the group of homotopy equivalences of these manifolds.

On characteristic classes of exotic manifold bundles

Given a closed simply connected manifold MM of dimension 2n≥62n\ge6, we compare the ring of characteristic classes of smooth oriented bundles with fibre MM to the analogous ring resulting from replacing MM by the connected sum M♯ΣM\sharpΣ with an exotic sphere ΣΣ. We show that, after inverting the order of ΣΣ in the group of homotopy spheres, the two rings in question are isomorphic in a range of degrees. Furthermore, we construct infinite families of examples witnessing that inverting the order of ΣΣ is necessary.
