Characterization of a continuous muon source for the Muon-Induced X-ray Emission (MIXE) Technique

The toolbox for material characterization has never been richer than today. Great progress with all kinds of particles and interaction methods provide access to nearly all properties of an object under study. However, a tomographic analysis of the subsurface region remains still a challenge today. In this regard, the Muon-Induced X-ray Emission (MIXE) technique has seen rebirth fueled by the availability of high intensity muon beams. We report here a study conducted at the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI). It demonstrates that the absence of any beam time-structure leads to low pile-up events and a high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) with less than one hour acquisition time per sample or data point. This performance creates the perspective to open this technique to a wider audience for the routine investigation of non-destructive and depth-sensitive elemental compositions, for example in rare and precious samples. Using a hetero-structured sample of known elements and thicknesses, we successfully detected the characteristic muonic X-rays, emitted during the capture of a negative muon by an atom, and the gamma-rays resulting from the nuclear capture of the muon, characterizing the capabilities of MIXE at PSI. This sample emphasizes the quality of a continuous beam, and the exceptional SNR at high rates. Such sensitivity will enable totally new statistically intense aspects in the field of MIXE, e.g. elemental 3D-tomography and chemical analysis. Therefore, we are currently advancing our proof-of-concept experiments with the goal of creating a full fledged permanently operated user station to make MIXE available to the wider scientific community as well as industry.

Observation of a Correlation Between Internal friction and Urbach Energy in Amorphous Oxides Thin Films

We have investigated by spectroscopic ellipsometry (SE, 190-1700 nm) the optical properties of uniform, amorphous thin films of Ta2O5 and Nb2O5 as deposited and after annealing, and after so-called "doping" with Ti atoms which leads to mixed oxides. Ta2O5 and Ti:Ta2O5 are currently used as high-index components in Bragg reflectors for Gravitational Wave Detectors. Parallel to the optical investigation, we measured the mechanical energy dissipation of the same coatings, through the so-called "loss angle" phi = Q^-1, which quantifies the energy loss in materials. By applying the well-known Cody-Lorentz model in the analysis of SE data we have been able to derive accurate information on the fundamental absorption edge through important parameters related to the electronic density of states, such as the optical gap (E_g) and the energy width of the exponential Urbach tail (the Urbach energy E_U). We have found that E_U is neatly reduced by suitable annealing as is also perceptible from direct inspection of SE data. Ti-doping also points to a minor decrease of E_U. The reduction of E_U parallels a lowering of the mechanical losses quantified by the loss angle phi. The correlation highlights that both the electronic states responsible of Urbach tail and the internal friction are sensitive to a self-correlation of defects on a medium-range scale, which is promoted by annealing and in our case, to a lesser extent, by doping. These observations may contribute to a better understanding of the relationship between structural and mechanical properties in amorphous oxides.

Progress in the measurement and reduction of thermal noise in optical coatings for gravitational-wave detectors

Coating thermal noise is a fundamental limit for precision experiments based on optical and quantum transducers. In this review, after a brief overview of the techniques for coating thermal noise measurements, we present the latest world-wide research activity on low-noise coatings, with a focus on the results obtained at the Laboratoire des Matériaux Avancés. We report new updated values for the Ta$_2$O$_5$, Ta$_2$O$_5$-TiO$_2$ and SiO$_2$ coatings of the Advanced LIGO, Advanced Virgo and KAGRA detectors, and new results from sputtered Nb$_2$O$_5$, TiO$_2$-Nb$_2$O$_5$, Ta$_2$O$_5$-ZrO$_2$, MgF$_2$, AlF$_3$ and silicon nitride coatings. Amorphous silicon, crystalline coatings, high-temperature deposition, multi-material coatings and composite layers are also briefly discussed, together with the latest developments of structural analyses and models.

Amorphous optical coatings of present gravitational-wave interferometers

We report on the results of an extensive campaign of optical and mechanical characterization of the ion-beam sputtered oxide layers (Ta$_2$O$_5$, TiO$_2$, Ta$_2$O$_5$-TiO$_2$, SiO$_2$) within the high-reflection coatings of the Advanced LIGO, Advanced Virgo and KAGRA gravitational-wave detectors: refractive index, thickness, optical absorption, composition, density, internal friction and elastic constants have been measured; the impact of deposition rate and post-deposition annealing on coating internal friction has been assessed. For Ta$_2$O$_5$ and SiO$_2$ layers, coating internal friction increases with the deposition rate, whereas the annealing treatment either erases or largely reduces the gap between samples with different deposition history. For Ta$_2$O$_5$-TiO$_2$ layers, the reduction of internal friction due to TiO$_2$ doping becomes effective only if coupled with annealing. All measured samples showed a weak dependence of internal friction on frequency ($ϕ_c(f) = af^{b}$, with $-0.208 < b < 0.140$ depending on the coating material considered). SiO$_2$ films showed a mode-dependent loss branching, likely due to spurious losses at the coated edge of the samples. The reference loss values of the Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo input (ITM) and end (ETM) mirror HR coatings have been updated by using our estimated value of Young's modulus of Ta$_2$O$_5$-TiO$_2$ layers (120 GPa) and are about 10\% higher than previous estimations.

Self-consistent two-gap approach in studying multi-band superconductivity in NdFeAsO$_{0.65}$F$_{0.35}$

High-quality single crystals of NdFeAsO$_{0.65}$F$_{0.35}$ (the transition temperature $T_{\rm c} \simeq 30.6$~K) were studied in zero-field (ZF) and transverse-field (TF) muon-spin rotation/relaxation ($μ$SR) experiments. An upturn in muon-spin depolarization rate at $T\lesssim 3$~K was observed in ZF-$μ$SR measurements and it was associated with the onset of ordering of Nd electronic moments. Measurements of the magnetic field penetration depth ($λ$) were performed in the TF geometry. By applying the external magnetic field $B_{\rm ex}$ parallel to the crystallographic $c$-axis ($B_{\rm ex}\| c$) and parallel to the $ab$-plane ($B_{\rm ex}\| ab$), the temperature dependencies of the in-plane component ($λ_{ab}^{-2}$) and the combination of the in-plane and the out of plane components ($λ_{ab,c}^{-2}$) of the superfluid density were determined, respectively. The out-of-plane superfluid density component ($λ_{c}^{-2}$) was further obtained by combining the results of $B_{\rm ex} \| c$ and $B_{\rm ex} \| {ab}$ set of experiments. The temperature dependencies of $λ_{ab}^{-2}$, $λ_{ab,c}^{-2}$, and $λ_{c}^{-2}$ were analyzed within the framework of a self-consistent two-gap model despite of using the traditional $α$-model. Interband coupling was taken into account, instead of assuming it to be zero as it stated in the $α$-model. A relatively small value of the interband coupling constant $Λ_{12} \simeq 0.01$ was obtained, thus indicating that the energy bands in NdFeAsO$_{0.65}$F$_{0.35}$ are only weakly coupled. In spite of their small magnitude, the coupling between the bands leads to the single value of the superconducting transition temperature $T_{\rm c}$.

Structural phases of elemental Gallium: universal relations in type-I superconductors

The temperature dependent measurements of the thermodynamic critical field and the specific heat for the pressure stabilized Ga-II phase of elemental Gallium are presented. The discussion of these and other Ga phases data in the context of elemental and binary phonon-mediated type-I superconductors allowed to establish simple scaling relations between BCS quantities such as $B_{\rm c}(0)/T_{\rm c}\sqrt{γ_{\rm e}}$ and the specific heat jump at $T_{\rm c}$ versus the coupling strength $2Δ/k_{\rm B} T_{\rm c}$ [$Δ$ and $B_{\rm c}(0)$ are the zero-temperature values of the superconducting energy gap and the thermodynamic critical field, respectively, $T_{\rm c}$ is the transition temperature, and $γ_{\rm e}$ is the electronic specific heat]. The scaling relations can be analytically expressed by taking into account strong-coupling corrections to BCS theory. Such correlations can naturally explain the linear relation between $B_{\rm c}(0)$ and $T_{\rm c}$, which holds for type-I superconducting materials.

We report on the optical, mechanical and structural characterization of the sputtered coating materials of Advanced LIGO, Advanced Virgo and KAGRA gravitational-waves detectors. We present the latest results of our research program aiming at decreasing coating thermal noise through doping, optimization of deposition parameters and post-deposition annealing. Finally, we propose sputtered Si3N4 as a candidate material for the mirrors of future detectors.

Proximity induced superconductivity within the insulating (Li$_{0.84}$Fe$_{0.16}$)OH layers in (Li$_{0.84}$Fe$_{0.16}$)OHFe$_{0.98}$Se

The role played by the insulating intermediate (Li$_{0.84}$Fe$_{0.16}$)OH layer on magnetic and superconducting properties of (Li$_{0.84}$Fe$_{0.16}$)OHFe$_{0.98}$Se was studied by means of muon-spin rotation. It was found that it is not only enhances the coupling between the FeSe layers for temperatures below $\simeq 10$ K, but becomes superconducting by itself due to the proximity to the FeSe ones. Superconductivity in (Li$_{0.84}$Fe$_{0.16}$)OH layers is most probably filamentary-like and the energy gap value, depending on the order parameter symmetry, does not exceed 1-1.5 meV.

Direct evidence for the emergence of a pressure induced nodal superconducting gap in the iron-based superconductor Ba_0.65Rb_0.35Fe_2As_2

Identifying the superconducting (SC) gap structure of the iron-based high-temperature superconductors (Fe-HTS's) remains a key issue for the understanding of superconductivity in these materials. In contrast to other unconventional superconductors, in the Fe-HTS's both $d$-wave and extended s-wave pairing symmetries are close in energy, with the latter believed to be generally favored over the former. Probing the proximity between these very different SC states and identifying experimental parameters that can tune them, are of central interest. Here we report high-pressure muon spin rotation experiments on the temperature-dependent magnetic penetration depth (lambda) in the optimally doped Fe-HTS Ba_0.65Rb_0.35Fe_2As_2. At ambient pressure this material is known to be a nodeless s-wave superconductor. Upon pressure a strong decrease of (lambda) is observed, while the SC transition temperature remains nearly constant. More importantly, the low-temperature behavior of (1/lambda^{2}) changes from exponential saturation at zero pressure to a power-law with increasing pressure, providing unambiguous evidence that hydrostatic pressure promotes nodal SC gaps. Comparison to microscopic models favors a d-wave over a nodal s^{+-}-wave pairing as the origin of the nodes. Our results provide a new route of understanding the complex topology of the SC gap in Fe-HTS's.

Short-range correlations in the magnetic ground state of Na4Ir3O8

The magnetic ground state of the hyper-kagome lattice in Na4Ir3O8 is explored via combined bulk magnetization, muon spin relaxation, and neutron scattering measurements. A short-range, frozen, state comprised of quasi-static moments develops below a characteristic temperature of T_F=6 K, revealing an inhomogeneous distribution of spins occupying the entirety of the sample volume. Quasi-static, short-range, spin correlations persist until at least 20 mK and differ substantially from the nominally dynamic response of a quantum spin liquid. Our data demonstrate that an inhomogeneous magnetic ground state arises in Na4Ir3O8 driven either by disorder inherent to the creation of the hyper-kagome lattice itself or stabilized via quantum fluctuations.

Ground state of bond-disordered quasi-one-dimensional spin system (CH3)2CHNH3Cu(ClxBr1-x)3 with x = 0, 0.25 and 0.3

The ground state of the quasi-one-dimensional system with bond-disorder (CH3)2CHNH3Cu(ClxBr1-x)3 with x = 0, 0.25 and 0.3 has been investigated by muSR. The Fourier spectrum of electron spin fluctuation in x =0.25 and 0.3 obtained by LF-muSR technique shows that there exists a soft-mode toward a possible phase transition to an exotic phase such as Bose-glass. In gapped system with x = 0, the Fourier spectrum is totally different from the other two, indicating the existence of the quantum critical point at a finite x between 0 and 0.25.

Short range magnetic order and effective suppression of superconductivity by manganese-doping in LaFe1-xMnxAsO1-yFy

We present a study of the structural and physical properties of directly hole doped LaFe1-xMnxAsO (x = 0.0-0.2) and the influence of charge compensation / electron-doping by additional F doping in LaFe0.9Mn0.1AsO1-yFy (y = 0.1-0.5). High quality polycrystalline samples were prepared using a solid state metathesis reaction. The unit cell increases upon Mn doping, but decreases again when additional F is inserted. The semiconducting character of LaFe1-xMnxAsO decreases with additional F doping. Muon spin relaxation (muSR) measurements reveal short range magnetic order in LaFe1-xMnxAsO and a suppression of magnetism by additional electron-doping with fluoride in LaFe0.9Mn0.1AsO1-yFy. Superconductivity remains absent even though the electronic preconditions are fulfilled in electron-doped LaFe0.9Mn0.1AsO1-yFy at x > 0.1, which is suggestive of effective pair breaking by Mn in this system.

Effect of external pressure on the magnetic properties of LnFeAsO (Ln = La, Ce, Pr, Sm)

We investigate the effect of external pressure on magnetic order in undoped LnFeAsO (Ln = La, Ce, Pr, La) by using muon-spin relaxation measurements and ab-initio calculations. Both magnetic transition temperature $T_m$ and Fe magnetic moment decrease with external pressure. The effect is observed to be lanthanide dependent with the strongest response for Ln = La and the weakest for Ln = Sm. The trend is qualitatively in agreement with our DFT calculations. The same calculations allow us to assign a value of 0.68(2) $μ_B$ to the Fe moment, obtained from an accurate determination of the muon sites. Our data further show that the magnetic lanthanide order transitions do not follow the simple trend of Fe, possibly as a consequence of the different $f$-electron overlap.

New Perspectives for Cuprate Research: CLBLCO Single Crystals

We report the successful growth of a large (Ca$_{x}$La$_{1-x}$)(Ba$_{1.75-x}$La$_{0.25+x}$)Cu$_{3}$O$_{y}$ (CLBLCO) single crystal. In this material, $x$ controls the maximum of Tc ($T_{c}^{\max}$), with minimal structural changes. Therefore, it allows a search for correlations between material properties and $T_{c}^{\max}$. We demonstrate that the crystals are good enough for neutron scattering and cleave well enough for Raman scattering. These results open new possibilities for cuprate research.

Strong Competition of Superconducting and Magnetic Order Parameters in Ba1-xNaxFe2As2

We study the interplay of magnetic and superconducting order in single crystalline hole doped Ba1-xNaxFe2As2 using muon spin relaxation. We find microscopic coexistence of magnetic order and superconductivity. In a strongly underdoped specimen the two forms of order coexist without any measurable reduction of the ordered magnetic moment by superconductivity, while in a nearly optimally doped sample the ordered magnetic moment is strongly suppressed below the superconducting transition temperature. This coupling can be well described within the framework of an effective two-band model incorporating inter- and intra-band interactions. In optimally doped Ba1-xNaxFe2As2 we observe no traces of static or dynamic magnetism and the temperature dependence of the superfluid density is consistent with two s-wave gaps without nodes.

Microscopic co-existence of superconductivity and magnetism in Ba1-xKxFe2As2

It is widely believed that, in contrast to its electron doped counterparts, the hole doped compound Ba1-xKxFe2As2 exhibits a mesoscopic phase separation of magnetism and superconductivity in the underdoped region of the phase diagram. Here, we report a combined high-resolution x-ray powder diffraction and volume sensitive muon spin rotation study of underdoped Ba1-xKxFe2As2 (0 \leq x \leq 0.25) showing that this paradigm is wrong. Instead we find a microscopic coexistence of the two forms of order. A competition of magnetism and superconductivity is evident from a significant reduction of the magnetic moment and a concomitant decrease of the magneto-elastically coupled orthorhombic lattice distortion below the superconducting phase transition.

Magnetic structure and spin dynamics of quasi-one-dimensional spin-chain antiferromagnet BaCo2V2O8

We report a neutron diffraction and muon spin relaxation muSR study of static and dynamical magnetic properties of BaCo2V2O8, a quasi-one-dimensional spin-chain system. A proposed model for the antiferromagnetic structure includes: a propagation vector k_AF = (0, 0, 1), independent of external magnetic fields for fields below a critical value H_c(T). The ordered moments, of 2.18 μ_B per Co ion, are aligned along the crystallographic c-axis. Within the screw chains, along the c axis, the moments are arranged antiferromagnetically. In the basal planes the spins are arranged ferromagnetically (forming zig-zags paths) along one of the axis and antiferromagnetically along the other. The temperature dependence of the sub-lattice magnetization is consistent with the expectations of the 3D Ising model. A similar behavior is observed for the internal static fields at different muon stopping sites. Muon time spectra measured at weak longitudinal fields and temperatures much higher than T_N can be well described using a single muon site with an exponential muon spin relaxation that gradually changes into an stretched exponential on approaching T_N. The temperature-induced changes of the relaxation suggest that the Co fluctuations dramatically slow down and the system becomes less homogeneous as it approaches the antiferromagnetic state.
