Cold quark matter at N3LO: soft contributions

High-order perturbative calculations for thermodynamic quantities in QCD are complicated by the physics of dynamical screening that affects the soft, long-wavelength modes of the system. Here, we provide details for the evaluation of this soft contribution to the next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order (N3LO) pressure of high-density, zero-temperature quark matter (QM), complementing our accompanying paper in arXiv:2103.05658. Our calculation requires the determination of the pressure of the hard-thermal-loop (HTL) effective theory to full two-loop order at zero temperature, which we go through in considerable detail. In addition to this, we comprehensively discuss the structure of the weak-coupling expansion of the QM pressure, and lay out a roadmap towards the evaluation of the contributions missing from a full N3LO result for this quantity.

Holographic approach to compact stars and their binary mergers

In this review article, we describe the role of holography in deciphering the physics of dense QCD matter, relevant for the description of compact stars and their binary mergers. We review the strengths and limitations of the holographic duality in describing strongly interacting matter at large baryon density, walk the reader through the most important results derived using the holographic approach so far, and highlight a number of outstanding open problems in the field. Finally, we discuss how we foresee holography contributing to compact-star physics in the coming years.

Multimessenger constraints for ultra-dense matter

Recent rapid progress in neutron-star (NS) observations offers great potential to constrain the properties of strongly interacting matter under the most extreme conditions. In order to fully exploit the current observational inputs and to study the impact of future observations of NS masses, radii, and tidal deformabilities, we analyze a large ensemble of randomly generated viable NS-matter equations of state (EoSs) and the corresponding rotating stellar structures. We discuss the compatibility and impact of various hypotheses and measurements on the EoS, including those involving the merger product of the gravitational-wave (GW) event GW170817, the binary merger components in GW190814, and radius measurements of the pulsar PSR J0740+6620. We obtain an upper limit for the dimensionless spin of a rigidly rotating NS, $|χ| < 0.81$, an upper limit for the compactness of a NS, $GM/(Rc^2) < 0.33$, and find that the conservative hypothesis that the remnant in GW170817 ultimately collapsed to a black hole strongly constrains the EoS and the maximal mass of NSs, implying $M_\text{TOV} < 2.53 M_\odot$ (or $M_\text{TOV} < 2.19 M_\odot$ if we assume that a hypermassive NS was created). Additionally, we derive a novel lower limit for the tidal deformability as a function of NS mass and provide fitting formulae that can be used to set priors for parameter estimation and to discern whether neutron stars or other compact objects are involved in future low-mass GW events. Finally, we find that the recent NICER results for the radius of the massive NS PSR J0740+6620 place strong constraints for the behavior of the EoS, and that the indicated radius values $R(2M_\odot) \gtrsim 11$ km are compatible with moderate speeds of sound in NS matter and thus with the existence of quark matter cores in massive NSs.

Soft interactions in cold quark matter

Accurate knowledge of the thermodynamic properties of zero-temperature, high-density quark matter plays an integral role in attempts to constrain the behavior of the dense QCD matter found inside neutron-star cores, irrespective of the phase realized inside the stars. In this Letter, we consider the weak-coupling expansion of the dense QCD equation of state and compute the next-to-next-to-next-to-leading-order contribution arising from the non-Abelian interactions among long-wavelength, dynamically screened gluonic fields. Accounting for these interactions requires an all-loop resummation, which can be performed using hard-thermal-loop (HTL) kinematic approximations. Concretely, we perform a full two-loop computation using the HTL effective theory, valid for the long-wavelength, or soft, modes. We find that the soft sector is well-behaved within cold quark matter, contrary to the case encountered at high temperatures, and find that the new contribution decreases the renormalization-scale dependence of the equation of state at high density.

Holographic approach to transport in dense QCD matter

The transport properties of dense QCD matter play a crucial role in the physics of neutron stars and their mergers, but are notoriously difficult to study with traditional quantum field theory tools. Specializing to the case of unpaired quark matter in beta equilibrium, we approach the problem through the machinery of holography, in particular the V-QCD and D3-D7 models, and derive results for the electrical and thermal conductivities and the shear and bulk viscosities. In addition we compare the bulk to shear viscosity ratio to the speed of sound and find that it violates the so-called Buchel bound. Our results differ dramatically from earlier predictions of perturbative QCD, the root causes and implications of which we analyze in detail.

Quasinormal modes and thermalization in Improved Holographic QCD

Following a series of similar calculations in simpler non-conformal holographic setups, we determine the quasinormal mode spectrum for an operator dual to a gauge-invariant scalar field within the Improved Holographic QCD framework. At temperatures somewhat above the critical temperature of the deconfinement transition, we find a small number of clearly separated modes followed by a branch-cut-like structure parallel to the real axis, the presence of which is linked to the form of the IHQCD potential employed. The temperature dependence of the lowest nonzero mode is furthermore used to study the thermalization time of the corresponding correlator, which is found to be of the order of the inverse critical temperature near the phase transition and decrease slightly faster than $1/T$ at higher temperatures.

Transport in strongly coupled quark matter

Motivated by the possible presence of deconfined quark matter in neutron stars and their mergers and the important role of transport phenomena in these systems, we perform the first-ever systematic study of different viscosities and conductivities of dense quark matter using the gauge/gravity duality. Utilizing the V-QCD model, we arrive at results that are in qualitative disagreement with the predictions of perturbation theory, which highlights the differing transport properties of the system at weak and strong coupling and calls for caution in the use of the perturbative results in neutron-star applications.

Breaking the sound barrier in AdS/CFT

It has been conjectured that the speed of sound in holographic models with UV fixed points has an upper bound set by the value of the quantity in conformal field theory. If true, this would set stringent constraints for the presence of strongly coupled quark matter in the cores of physical neutron stars, as the existence of two-solar-mass stars appears to demand a very stiff Equation of State. In this article, we present a family of counterexamples to the speed of sound conjecture, consisting of strongly coupled theories at finite density. The theories we consider include ${\cal N}=4$ super Yang-Mills at finite R-charge density and non-zero gaugino masses, while the holographic duals are Einstein-Maxwell theories with a minimally coupled scalar in a charged black hole geometry. We show that for a small breaking of conformal invariance, the speed of sound approaches the conformal value from above at large chemical potentials.

Cool quark matter

We generalize the state-of-the-art perturbative Equation of State of cold quark matter to nonzero temperatures, needed in the description of neutron star mergers and core collapse processes. The new result is accurate to order g^5 in the gauge coupling, and is based on a novel framework for dealing with the infrared sensitive soft field modes of the theory. The zero Matsubara mode sector is treated using a dimensionally reduced effective theory, while the soft non-zero modes are resummed using the Hard Thermal Loop approximation. This combination of known effective descriptions offers unprecedented access to small but nonzero temperatures, both in and out of beta equilibrium.

Holographic quark matter and neutron stars

We use a top-down holographic model for strongly interacting quark matter to study the properties of neutron stars. When the corresponding Equation of State (EoS) is matched with state-of-the-art results for dense nuclear matter, we consistently observe a first order phase transition at densities between two and seven times the nuclear saturation density. Solving the Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkov equations with the resulting hybrid EoSs, we find maximal stellar masses in the excess of two solar masses, albeit somewhat smaller than those obtained with simple extrapolations of the nuclear matter EoSs. Our calculation predicts that no quark matter exists inside neutron stars.

On high-order perturbative calculations at finite density

We discuss the prospects of performing high-order perturbative calculations in systems characterized by a vanishing temperature but finite density. In particular, we show that the determination of generic Feynman integrals containing fermionic chemical potentials can be reduced to the evaluation of three-dimensional phase space integrals over vacuum on-shell amplitudes - a result reminiscent of a previously proposed "naive real-time formalism" for vacuum diagrams. Applications of these rules are discussed in the context of the thermodynamics of cold and dense QCD, where it is argued that they facilitate an extension of the Equation of State of cold quark matter to higher perturbative orders.

Finite coupling corrections to holographic predictions for hot QCD

Finite 't Hooft coupling corrections to multiple physical observables in strongly coupled $N=4$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills plasma are examined, in an attempt to assess the stability of the expansion in inverse powers of the 't Hooft coupling $λ$. Observables considered include thermodynamic quantities, transport coefficients, and quasinormal mode frequencies. Although large $λ$ expansions for quasinormal mode frequencies are notably less well behaved than the expansions of other quantities, we find that a partial resummation of higher order corrections can significantly reduce the sensitivity of the results to the value of $λ$.

Gravitational collapse of thin shells: Time evolution of the holographic entanglement entropy

We study the dynamics of gravitationally collapsing massive shells in AdS spacetime, and show in detail how one can determine extremal surfaces traversing them. The results are used to solve the time evolution of the holographic entanglement entropy in strongly coupled dual conformal gauge theory, which is is seen to exhibit a regime of linear growth independent of the shape of the boundary entangling region and the equation of state of the shell. Our exact results are finally compared to those of two commonly used approximation schemes, the Vaidya metric and the quasistatic limit, whose respective regions of validity are quantitatively determined.

Heavy ion theory: Review of recent developments with a first principles bias

We discuss a number of prominent theoretical challenges in the physics of ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions, and review some recent attempts to tackle them. These examples cover most stages of the collision process, but emphasis is given to approaches that rely on first principles methods or well-established Effective Field Theory frameworks. The topics discussed in most detail include the early dynamics of a collision as well as the properties of quark gluon plasma in thermal equilibrium.

Neutron star structure from QCD

In this review article, we argue that our current understanding of the thermodynamic properties of cold QCD matter, originating from first principles calculations at high and low densities, can be used to efficiently constrain the macroscopic properties of neutron stars. In particular, we demonstrate that combining state-of-the-art results from Chiral Effective Theory and perturbative QCD with the current bounds on neutron star masses, the Equation of State of neutron star matter can be obtained to an accuracy better than 30% at all densities.

On the infrared behavior of the shear spectral function in hot Yang-Mills theory

We revisit the determination of the two-loop spectral function in the shear channel of hot Yang-Mills theory. Correcting a technical error in an earlier computation and extending the result with a leading order Hard Thermal Loop resummation is seen to improve the infrared behavior of the quantity significantly. This makes it possible to straightforwardly use the result in the corresponding imaginary time correlator and the shear sum rule.

Small black holes in global AdS spacetime

We study finite temperature correlation functions and quasinormal modes in a strongly coupled conformal field theory holographically dual to a small black hole in global Anti-de Sitter spacetime. Upon variation of the black hole radius, our results smoothly interpolate between known limits corresponding to large black holes and thermal AdS space. This implies that the quantities are continuous functions of energy density in the microcanonical ensemble, thus smoothly connecting the deconfined and confined phases that are separated by a first order phase transition in the canonical description.

Constraining neutron star matter with QCD

In recent years, there have been several successful attempts to constrain the equation of state of neutron star matter using input from low-energy nuclear physics and observational data. We demonstrate that significant further restrictions can be placed by additionally requiring the pressure to approach that of deconfined quark matter at high densities. Remarkably, the new constraints turn out to be highly insensitive to the amount --- or even presence --- of quark matter inside the stars.

Effective Lagrangians for quantum many-body systems

The low-energy and low-momentum dynamics of systems with a spontaneously broken continuous symmetry is dominated by the ensuing Nambu-Goldstone bosons. It can be conveniently encoded in a model-independent effective field theory whose structure is fixed by symmetry up to a set of effective coupling constants. We construct the most general effective Lagrangian for the Nambu-Goldstone bosons of spontaneously broken global internal symmetry up to the fourth order in derivatives. Rotational invariance and spatial dimensionality of one, two or three are assumed in order to obtain compact explicit expressions, but our method is completely general and can be applied without modifications to condensed matter systems with a discrete space group as well as to higher-dimensional theories. The general low-energy effective Lagrangian for relativistic systems follows as a special case. We also discuss the effects of explicit symmetry breaking and classify the corresponding terms in the Lagrangian. Diverse examples are worked out in order to make the results accessible to a wide theoretical physics community.

In these conference proceedings, I describe recent developments in the study of thermalization dynamics in strongly, but not infinitely strongly coupled field theories using holography. Interacting quark matter equation of state for compact stars

Lattice QCD studies of the thermodynamics of the hot quark-gluon plasma (QGP) demonstrate the importance of accounting for the interactions of quarks and gluons, if one wants to investigate the phase structure of strongly interacting matter. Motivated by this observation and using state-of-the-art results from perturbative QCD, we construct a simple effective equation of state for cold quark matter that consistently incorporates the effects of interactions and furthermore includes a built-in estimate of the inherent systematic uncertainties. This goes beyond the MIT bag model description in a crucial way, yet leads to an equation of state that is equally straightforward to use.

Universality in holographic entropy production

We consider the time evolution of two entropy-like quantities, the holographic entanglement entropy and causal holographic information, in a model of holographic thermalization dual to the gravitational collapse of a thin planar shell. Unlike earlier calculations valid in different limits, we perform a full treatment of the dynamics of the system, varying both the shell's equation of state and initial position. In all cases considered, we find that between an early period related to the acceleration of the shell and a late epoch of saturation towards the thermal limit, the entanglement entropy exhibits universal linear growth in time in accordance with the prediction of Liu and Suh. As intermediate steps of our analysis, we explicitly construct a coordinate system continuous at the location of an infinitely thin shell and derive matching conditions for geodesics and extremal surfaces traversing this region.

Bulk and shear spectral functions in weakly and strongly coupled Yang-Mills theory

In this talk, we discuss a number of recent calculations aimed at determining the spectral functions corresponding to various components of the energy momentum tensor in high-temperature SU(N) Yang-Mills theory. The computations reviewed include applications of both weak coupling and gauge/gravity techniques, and thus enable one to access different limits of the quantities. The motivation for the work is twofold: On one hand, the results are hoped to aid the eventual nonperturbative extraction of the bulk and shear viscosities from lattice data, while on the other hand they also enable an immediate comparison of the lattice, perturbative and holographic predictions for certain Euclidean correlators.

Energy momentum tensor correlators in hot Yang-Mills theory: holography confronts lattice and perturbation theory

We investigate the behavior of energy momentum tensor correlators in strongly coupled large-N_c Yang-Mills theory at nonzero temperature, working within the Improved Holographic QCD model. In particular, we determine the spectral functions and corresponding imaginary time correlators in the bulk and shear channels, and compare the results to recent perturbative and lattice calculations where available. For the bulk channel imaginary time correlator, for which all three results exist, lattice data is seen to favor the holographic prediction over the perturbative one over a wide range of temperatures.

Equation of State of hot and dense QCD: Resummed perturbation theory confronts lattice data

We perform a detailed analysis of the predictions of resummed perturbation theory for the pressure and the second-, fourth-, and sixth-order diagonal quark number susceptibilities in a hot and dense quark-gluon plasma. First, we present an exact one-loop calculation of the equation of state within hard-thermal-loop perturbation theory (HTLpt) and compare it to a previous one-loop HTLpt calculation that employed an expansion in the ratios of thermal masses and the temperature. We find that this expansion converges reasonably fast. We then perform a resummation of the existing four-loop weak coupling expression for the pressure, motivated by dimensional reduction. Finally, we compare the exact one-loop HTLpt and resummed dimensional reduction results with state-of-the-art lattice calculations and a recent mass-expanded three-loop HTLpt calculation.

Probing the pattern of holographic thermalization with photons

We investigate the behavior of the retarded Green's function of a U(1) gauge field in holographic N=4 Super Yang-Mills plasma, taking the leading strong coupling corrections into account. First, we use the thermal limit of this quantity to determine the flow of the photon quasinormal mode spectrum away from the infinite 't Hooft coupling limit, and after this specialize to a specific model of holographic thermalization, in which we evaluate the corresponding spectral density. In the latter case, our primary interest lies in the pattern, with which the spectral density approaches its equilibrium form, and how this process depends on the value of the coupling as well as the photon virtuality. All of the results obtained point consistently towards the weakening of the usual top/down pattern of holographic thermalization, once the coupling is decreased from the λ=infinity limit.

Quark number susceptibilities from resummed perturbation theory

We evaluate the second and fourth order quark number susceptibilities in hot QCD using two variations of resummed perturbation theory. On one hand, we carry out a one-loop calculation within hard-thermal-loop perturbation theory, and on the other hand perform a resummation of the four-loop finite density equation of state derived using a dimensionally reduced effective theory. Our results are subsequently compared with recent high precision lattice data, and their agreement thoroughly analyzed.

Computing the temperature dependence of effective CP violation in the standard model

CP violation in the standard model originates from the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa mixing matrix. Upon integrating all fermions out of the theory, its effects are captured by a series of effective nonrenormalizable operators for the bosonic gauge and Higgs fields. We compute the CP-violating part of the effective action to the leading nontrivial, sixth order in the covariant gradient expansion as a function of temperature. In the limit of zero temperature, our result addresses the discrepancy between two independent calculations existing in the literature [1,2]. We find that CP violation in the standard model is strongly suppressed at high temperature, but that at T<1GeV it may be relevant for certain scenarios of baryogenesis. We also identify a selected class of operators at the next, eighth order and discuss the convergence of the covariant gradient expansion.

Holographic dilepton production in a thermalizing plasma

We determine the out-of-equilibrium production rate of dileptons at rest in strongly coupled N=4 Super Yang-Mills plasma using the AdS/CFT correspondence. Thermalization is achieved via the gravitational collapse of a thin shell of matter in AdS_5 space and the subsequent formation of a black hole, which we describe in a quasistatic approximation. Prior to thermalization, the dilepton spectral function is observed to oscillate as a function of frequency, but the amplitude of the oscillations decreases when thermal equilibrium is approached. At the same time, we follow the flow of the quasinormal spectrum of the corresponding U(1) vector field towards its equilibrium limit.

Production of Prompt Photons: Holographic Duality and Thermalization

We study the production of prompt photons in strongly coupled out-of-equilibrium Super Yang-Mills plasma using the AdS/CFT correspondence. Our goal is to determine the photon emission spectrum at different stages of a thermalization process, which is modeled via the gravitational collapse of a thin spherical shell in AdS$_5$ space. Particular emphasis is placed on the limit of large frequencies, which we are able to treat analytically.

Temperature Dependence of Standard Model CP Violation

We analyze the temperature dependence of CP violation effects in the Standard Model by determining the effective action of its bosonic fields, obtained after integrating out the fermions from the theory and performing a covariant gradient expansion. We find non-vanishing CP violating terms starting at the sixth order of the expansion, albeit only in the C odd/P even sector, with coefficients that depend on quark masses, CKM matrix elements, temperature and the magnitude of the Higgs field. The CP violating effects are observed to decrease rapidly with temperature, which has important implications for the generation of a matter-antimatter asymmetry in the early Universe. Our results suggest that the cold electroweak baryogenesis scenario may be viable within the Standard Model, provided the electroweak transition temperature is at most of order 1 GeV.

The shear channel spectral function in hot Yang-Mills theory

We determine a next-to-leading order result for the shear channel thermal spectral function in SU(N) Yang-Mills theory, working in the limit of vanishing external three-momentum. The result is subsequently applied to the evaluation of the corresponding imaginary time correlator, and its use in the context of sum rules is discussed. Our hope is that the calculation will eventually find use in the nonperturbative determination of the shear viscosity of the theory.

Thermalization at intermediate coupling

We use the AdS/CFT conjecture to investigate the thermalization of large-N_c N=4 Super Yang-Mills plasma in the limit of large but finite 't Hooft coupling. On the gravity side, we supplement the type IIB supergravity action by the full set of O(α'^3) operators, which enables us to derive O(λ^{-3/2}) corrections to the emission spectrum of prompt photons in one model of holographic thermalization. Decreasing the coupling strength from the λ=\infty limit, we observe a qualitative change in the way the photon spectral density approaches its thermal limit as a function of the photon energy. We interpret this behavior as a sign of the thermalization pattern of the plasma shifting from top/down towards bottom/up.

Two-color QCD via dimensional reduction

We study the thermodynamics of two-color QCD at high temperature and/or density using a dimensionally reduced superrenormalizable effective theory, formulated in terms of a coarse grained Wilson line. In the absence of quarks, the theory is required to respect the Z(2) center symmetry, while the effects of quarks of arbitrary masses and chemical potentials are introduced via soft Z(2) breaking operators. Perturbative matching of the effective theory parameters to the full theory is carried out explicitly, and it is argued how the new theory can be used to explore the phase diagram of two-color QCD.

Frequency and wave number dependence of the shear correlator in strongly coupled hot Yang-Mills theory

We use AdS/QCD duality to compute the finite temperature Green's function G(omega,k;T) of the shear operator T_12 for all omega,k in hot Yang-Mills theory. The goal is to assess how the existence of scales like the transition temperature and glueball masses affects the correlator computed in the scalefree conformal N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory. We observe sizeable effects for T close to T_c which rapidly disappear with increasing T. Quantitative agreement of these predictions with future lattice Monte Carlo data would suggest that QCD matter in this temperature range is strongly interacting.

The QCD Equation of State - From Nuclear Physics to Perturbation Theory

In this talk, we briefly review the current understanding of the behavior of the QCD equation of state throughout the phase diagram. Special emphasis is given to regions of phenomenological interest, and a number of important open questions as well as directions of ongoing research are pointed out. These include in particular the region of low temperatures and (moderately) high densities, where at the moment we have extremely few first principles tools available.

Cold Quark Matter

We perform an O(alpha_s^2) perturbative calculation of the equation of state of cold but dense QCD matter with two massless and one massive quark flavor, finding that perturbation theory converges reasonably well for quark chemical potentials above 1 GeV. Using a running coupling constant and strange quark mass, and allowing for further non-perturbative effects, our results point to a narrow range where absolutely stable strange quark matter may exist. Absent stable strange quark matter, our findings suggest that quark matter in compact star cores becomes confined to hadrons only slightly above the density of atomic nuclei. Finally, we show that equations of state including quark matter lead to hybrid star masses up to M~2M_solar, in agreement with current observations. For strange stars, we find maximal masses of M~2.75M_solar and conclude that confirmed observations of compact stars with M>2M_solar would strongly favor the existence of stable strange quark matter.

Hyperfine Splitting and the Zeeman Effect in Holographic Heavy-Light Mesons

We inspect the mass spectrum of heavy-light mesons in deformed N=2 super Yang-Mills theory using the AdS/CFT correspondence. We demonstrate how some of the degeneracies of the supersymmetric meson spectrum can be removed upon breaking the supersymmetry, thus leading to the emergence of hyperfine structure. The explicit SUSY breaking scenarios we consider involve on one hand tilting one of the two fundamental D7 branes inside the internal R^6 space, and on the other hand applying an external magnetic field on the (untilted) branes. The latter scenario leads to the well-known Zeeman effect, which we inspect for both weak and strong magnetic fields.

Looking inside neutron stars: Microscopic calculations confront observations

While QCD appears not to be accurately solvable in the regime of interest for neutron star physics, microscopic calculations are feasible at both low and very high densities. In this work, we propose using the most realistic calculations in these two regimes of nuclear physics and perturbative QCD, and construct equations of state by matching the results requiring thermodynamic consistency. We find that the resulting equations of state --- in contrast to several hadronic ones --- are able to reproduce current observational data on neutron stars without any fine tuning, and allow stable hybrid stars with masses up to 2.1M_{sun}. Using recent observations of star radii, we perform a maximum likelihood analysis to further constrain the equation of state, and in addition show that the effects of rotation on radii and masses should not be neglected in future precision studies.

Scalar and Pseudoscalar Correlators in Yang-Mills Theory

Correlation functions of the FF and F\tilde{F} operators in hot SU(3) Yang-Mills theory have recently been studied both on the lattice and in perturbation theory, and the results subsequently compared to the strong coupling limit of large-N_c N=4 Super Yang-Mills theory, available through the AdS/CFT correspondence. Here, we review the perturbative calculations, covering both Euclidean spatial correlators and the UV limit of spectral densities, and comment on the emerging physical picture as well as on possible extensions of the present studies.

Perturbative nuclear physics

We present a new formulation of effective field theory for nucleon-nucleon (NN) interactions which treats pion interactions perturbatively, and we offer evidence that the expansion converges satisfactorily to third order in the expansion, which we have computed analytically for s and d wave NN scattering. Starting with the Kaplan-Savage-Wise (KSW) expansion about the nontrivial fixed point corresponding to infinite NN scattering length, we cure the convergence problems with that theory by summing to all orders the singular short distance part of the pion tensor interaction. This method makes possible a host of high precision analytic few-body calculations in nuclear physics.
