Counter-rotating spiral, zigzag, and 120∘^\circ orders from coupled-chain analysis of Kitaev-Gamma-Heisenberg model, and relations to honeycomb iridates

We study the nearest neighboring spin-1/2 Kitaev-Heisenberg-Gamma (KJΓKJΓ) model on the honeycomb lattice in the parameter region of ferromagnetic (FM) Kitaev and antiferromagnetic (AFM) Heisenberg couplings relevant for honeycomb iridates, using a coupled-chain analysis. Starting from the gapless Luttinger liquid phase of a decoupled KJΓKJΓ chain, the inter-chain interactions in the two-dimensional model is treated within a self-consistent mean field approach based on the Luttinger liquid theory. In the FM Gamma region, our analysis recovers the reported 120∘^\circ magnetic order, previously obtained by classical analysis and exact diagonalization method. On the other hand, new physics is revealed in the AFM Gamma region, where three magnetic orders are found, including 120∘^\circ, commensurate counter-rotating spiral, and zigzag orders. Interestingly, the two first order phase transition lines separating these three magnetic orders merge at a single point at K=−2ΓK = -2 Γ and J=0J=0, which is predicted to be a quantum critical point. The current theory captures the experimentally observed counter-rotating spiral order in αα-Li22_22IrO3_3 and the zigzag order in Na2_2IrO3_3, thereby indicating that the spin-1/2 KJΓKJΓ model may serve as a minimal model for honeycomb iridates. Limitations of the mean field theory presented in this work and the J→0J \rightarrow 0 regime are also discussed.

Origin of nonsymmorphic bosonization formulas in generalized antiferromagnetic Kitaev spin-12\frac{1}{2} chains from a renormalization-group perspective

Recently, in the Luttinger liquid phase of the one-dimensional generalized antiferromagnetic Kitaev spin-1/2 model, it has been found that the abelian bosonization formulas of the local spin operators only respect the exact discrete nonsymmorphic symmetry group of the model, not the emergent U(1) symmetry. In this work, we perform a renormalization group (RG) study to provide explanations for the origin of the U(1) breaking terms in the bosonization formulas. We find that the lack of U(1) symmetry originates from the wavefunction renormalization effects in the spin operators along the RG flow induced by the U(1) breaking interactions in the microscopic Hamiltonian. In addition, the RG analysis can give predictions to the signs and order of magnitudes of the coefficients in the bosonization formulas. Our work is helpful to understand the rich nonsymmorphic physics in one-dimensional Kitaev spin models.

Symmetry analysis of bond-alternating Kitaev spin chains and ladders

In this work, we analyze the nonsymmorphic symmetry group structures for a variety of generalized Kitaev spin chains and ladders with bond alternations, including Kitaev-Gamma chain, Kitaev-Heisenberg-Gamma chain, beyond nearest neighbor interactions, and two-leg spin ladders. The symmetry analysis is applied to determine the symmetry breaking patterns of several magnetically ordered phases in the bond-alternating Kitaev-Gamma spin chains, as well as the dimerization order parameters for spontaneous dimerizations. Our work is useful in understanding the magnetic phases in related models and may provide guidance for the symmetry classifications of mean field solutions in further investigations.

Classical spin order near antiferromagnetic Kitaev point in the spin-1/2 Kitaev-Gamma chain

A minimal Kitaev-Gamma model has been recently investigated to understand various Kitaev systems. In the one-dimensional Kitaev-Gamma chain, an emergent SU(2)1_1 phase and a rank-1 spin ordered phase with Oh→D4O_h\rightarrow D_4 symmetry breaking were identified using non-Abelian bosonization and numerical techniques. However, puzzles near the antiferromagnetic Kitaev region with finite Gamma interaction remained unresolved. Here we focus on this parameter region and find that there are two new phases, namely, a rank-1 ordered phase with an Oh→D3O_h\rightarrow D_3 symmetry breaking, and a peculiar Kitaev phase. Remarkably, the Oh→D3O_h\rightarrow D_3 symmetry breaking corresponds to the classical magnetic order, but appears in a region very close to the antiferromagnetic Kitaev point where the quantum fluctuations are presumably very strong. In addition, a two-step symmetry breaking Oh→D3d→D3O_h\rightarrow D_{3d}\rightarrow D_3 is numerically observed as the length scale is increased: At short and intermediate length scales, the system behaves as having a rank-2 spin nematic order with Oh→D3dO_h\rightarrow D_{3d} symmetry breaking; and at long distances, time reversal symmetry is further broken leading to the Oh→D3O_h\rightarrow D_3 symmetry breaking. Finally, there is no numerical signature of spin orderings nor Luttinger liquid behaviors in the Kitaev phase whose nature is worth further studies.

BCS-BEC crossover in a (t2g)4(t_{2g})^4 Excitonic Magnet

The condensation of spin-orbit-induced excitons in (t2g)4(t_{2g})^4 electronic systems is attracting considerable attention. In the large Hubbard U limit, antiferromagnetism was proposed to emerge from the Bose-Einstein Condensation (BEC) of triplons (Jeff=1J_{\textrm{eff}} = 1). In this publication, we show that even for the weak and intermediate U regimes, the spin-orbit exciton condensation is possible leading also to staggered magnetic order. The canonical electron-hole excitations (excitons) transform into local triplon excitations at large U , and this BEC strong coupling regime is smoothly connected to the intermediate U excitonic insulator region. We solved the degenerate three-orbital Hubbard model with spin-orbit coupling (λλ) in one-dimensional geometry using the Density Matrix Renormalization Group, while in two-dimensional square clusters we use the Hartree-Fock approximation (HFA). Employing these techniques, we provide the full λλ vs U phase diagrams for both one- and two- dimensional lattices. Our main result is that at the intermediate Hubbard U region of our focus, increasing λλ at fixed U the system transitions from an incommensurate spin-density-wave metal to a Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) excitonic insulator, with coherence length r coh of O(a) and O(10a) in 1d and 2d, respectively, with a the lattice spacing. Further increasing λλ, the system eventually crosses over to the BEC limit (with r coh << a).

Comprehensive study of the phase diagram of the spin-1/2 Kitaev-Heisenberg-Gamma chain

A central question on Kitaev materials is the effects of additional couplings on the Kitaev model which is proposed to be a candidate for realizing topological quantum computations. However, two spatial dimension typically suffers the difficulty of lacking controllable approaches. In this work, using a combination of powerful analytical and numerical methods available in one dimension, we perform a comprehensive study on the phase diagram of a one-dimensional version of the spin-1/2 Kitaev-Heisenberg-Gamma model in its full parameter space. A strikingly rich phase diagram is found with nine distinct phases, including four Luttinger liquid phases, a ferromagnetic phase, a Néel ordered phase, an ordered phase of distorted-spiral spin alignments, and two ordered phase which both break a D3D_3 symmetry albeit in different ways, where D3D_3 is the dihedral group of order six. Our work paves the way for studying one-dimensional Kitaev materials and may provide hints to the physics in higher dimensional situations.

Emergence of Superconductivity in Doped Multiorbital Hubbard Chains

We introduce a variational state for one-dimensional two-orbital Hubbard models that intuitively explains the recent computational discovery of pairing in these systems when hole doped. Our Ansatz is an optimized linear superposition of Affleck-Kennedy-Lieb-Tasaki valence bond states, rendering the combination a valence bond liquid dubbed Orbital Resonant Valence Bond. We show that the undoped (one electron/orbital) quantum state of two sites coupled into a global spin singlet is exactly written employing only spin-1/2 singlets linking orbitals at nearest-neighbor sites. Generalizing to longer chains defines our variational state visualized geometrically expressing our chain as a two-leg ladder, with one orbital per leg. As in Anderson's resonating valence-bond state, our undoped variational state contains preformed singlet pairs that via doping become mobile leading to superconductivity. Doped real materials with one-dimensional substructures, two near-degenerate orbitals, and intermediate Hubbard U/W strengths -- W the carrier's bandwidth -- could realize spin-singlet pairing if on-site anisotropies are small. If these anisotropies are robust, spin-triplet pairing emerges.

Phase diagram of the spin-1/2 Kitaev-Gamma chain and emergent SU(2) symmetry

We study the phase diagram of a one-dimensional version of the Kitaev spin-1/2 model with an extra ``ΓΓ-term", using analytical, density matrix renormalization group and exact diagonalization methods. Two intriguing phases are found. In the gapless phase, although the exact symmetry group of the system is discrete, the low energy theory is described by an emergent SU(2)1_1 Wess-Zumino-Witten (WZW) model. On the other hand, the spin-spin correlation functions exhibit SU(2) breaking prefactors, even though the exponents and the logarithmic corrections are consistent with the SU(2)1_1 predictions. A modified nonabelian bosonization formula is proposed to capture such exotic emergent ``partial" SU(2) symmetry. In the ordered phase, there is numerical evidence for an Oh→D4O_h\rightarrow D_4 spontaneous symmetry breaking.

Spectroscopic signatures of next-nearest-neighbor hopping in the charge and spin dynamics of doped one-dimensional antiferromagnets

We study the impact of next-nearest-neighbor (nnn) hopping on the low-energy collective excitations of strongly correlated doped antiferromagnetic cuprate spin chains. Specifically, we use exact diagonalization and the density matrix renormalization group method to study the single-particle spectral function, the dynamical spin and charge structure factors, and the Cu LL-edge resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) intensity of the doped tt-t′t^\prime-JJ model for a set of t′t^\prime values. We find evidence for the breakdown of spin-charge separation as ∣t′∣|t^\prime| increases and identify its fingerprints in the dynamical response functions. The inclusion of nnn hopping couples the spinon and holon excitations, resulting in the formation of a spin-polaron, where a ferromagnetic spin polarization cloud dresses the doped carrier. The spin-polaron manifests itself as additional spectral weight in the dynamical correlation functions, which appear simultaneously in the spin- and charge-sensitive channels. We also demonstrate that RIXS can provide a unique view of the spin-polaron, due to its sensitivity to both the spin and charge degrees of freedom.

Magnetic properties and pairing tendencies of the iron-based superconducting ladder BaFe2_2S3_3: combined ab initio and density matrix renormalization group study

The recent discovery of superconductivity under high pressure in the two-leg ladder compound BaFe2_2S3_3 [H. Takahashi et al., Nature Materials 14, 1008 (2015)] opens a broad avenue of research, because it represents the first report of pairing tendencies in a quasi one-dimensional iron-based high critical temperature superconductor. Similarly as in the case of the cuprates, ladders and chains can be far more accurately studied using many-body techniques and model Hamiltonians than their layered counterparts, particularly if several orbitals are active. In this publication, we derive a two-orbital Hubbard model from first principles that describes individual ladders of BaFe2_2S3_3. The model is studied with the density matrix renormalization group. These first reported results are exciting for two reasons: (i) at half-filling, ferromagnetic order emerges as the dominant magnetic pattern along the rungs of the ladder, and antiferromagnetic order along the legs, in excellent agreement with neutron experiments; (ii) pairs form in the strong coupling regime, as found by studying the binding energy of two holes doped on the half-filled system. In addition, Orbital Selective Mott Phase characteristics develop with doping, with only one Wannier orbital receiving the hole carriers while the other remains half-filled. These results suggest that the analysis of models for iron-based two-leg ladders could clarify the origin of pairing tendencies and other exotic properties of iron-based high critical temperature superconductors.
