Decomposition rank of approximately subhomogeneous C*-algebras

It is shown that every Jiang-Su stable approximately subhomogeneous C*-algebra has finite decomposition rank. Previously, it was not even known that such algebras have finite nuclear dimension. A key step in the proof is that subhomogeneous C*-algebra are locally approximated by a certain class of more tractable subhomogeneous algebras, namely, a non-commutative generalization of the class of cell complexes. The result is applied to show that Jiang-Su stable minimal Z-crossed products have finite decomposition rank.

Quasidiagonality of nuclear C*-algebras

We prove that faithful traces on separable and nuclear C*-algebras in the UCT class are quasidiagonal. This has a number of consequences. Firstly, by results of many hands, the classification of unital, separable, simple and nuclear C*-algebras of finite nuclear dimension which satisfy the UCT is now complete. Secondly, our result links the finite to the general version of the Toms-Winter conjecture in the expected way and hence clarifies the relation between decomposition rank and nuclear dimension. Finally, we confirm the Rosenberg conjecture: discrete, amenable groups have quasidiagonal C*-algebras.

Relative commutants of strongly self-absorbing C*-algebras

The relative commutant $A'\cap A^{\mathcal{U}}$ of a strongly self-absorbing algebra $A$ is indistinguishable from its ultrapower $A^{\mathcal{U}}$. This applies both to the case when $A$ is the hyperfinite II$_1$ factor and to the case when it is a strongly self-absorbing C*-algebra. In the latter case we prove analogous results for $\ell_\infty(A)/c_0(A)$ and reduced powers corresponding to other filters on $\bf N$. Examples of algebras with approximately inner flip and approximately inner half-flip are provided, showing the optimality of our results. We also prove that strongly self-absorbing algebras are smoothly classifiable, unlike the algebras with approximately inner half-flip.

High-dimensional Z-stable AH algebras

It is shown that a C*-algebra of the form C(X,U), where U is a UHF algebra, is not an inductive limit of subhomogeneous C*-algebras of topological dimension less than that of X. This is in sharp contrast to dimension-reduction phenomenon in (i) simple inductive limits of such algebras, where classification implies low-dimensional approximations, and (ii) when dimension is measured using decomposition rank, as the author and Winter proved that dr(C(X,U)) $\leq$ 2.

Nuclear dimension, Z-stability, and algebraic simplicity for stably projectionless C*-algebras

The main result here is that a simple separable C*-algebra is Z-stable (where Z denotes the Jiang-Su algebra) if (i) it has finite nuclear dimension or (ii) it is approximately subhomogeneous with slow dimension growth. This generalizes the main results of [Toms, "K-theoretic rigidity and slow dimension growth"; Winter, "Nuclear dimension and Z-stability of pure C*-algebras"] to the nonunital setting. As a consequence, finite nuclear dimension implies Z-stability even in the case of a separable C*-algebra with finitely many ideals. Algebraic simplicity is established as a fruitful weakening of being simple and unital, and the proof of the main result makes heavy use of this concept.

Decomposition rank of Z-stable C*-algebras

We show that C*-algebras of the form C(X) \otimes Z, where X is compact and Hausdorff and Z denotes the Jiang--Su algebra, have decomposition rank at most 2. This amounts to a dimension reduction result for C*-bundles with sufficiently regular fibres. It establishes an important case of a conjecture on the fine structure of nuclear C*-algebras of Toms and the second named author, even in a nonsimple setting, and gives evidence that the topological dimension of noncommutative spaces is governed by fibres rather than base spaces.

On the structure of the Cuntz semigroup in (possibly) nonunital C*-algebras

We examine the ranks of operators in semi-finite C*-algebras as measured by their densely defined lower semicontinuous traces. We first prove that a unital simple C*-algebra whose extreme tracial boundary is nonempty and finite contains positive operators of every possible rank, independent of the property of strict comparison. We then turn to nonunital simple algebras and establish criteria that imply that the Cuntz semigroup is recovered functorially from the Murray-von Neumann semigroup and the space of densely defined lower semicontinuous traces. Finally, we prove that these criteria are satisfied by not-necessarily-unital approximately subhomogeneous algebras of slow dimension growth.

Regularity for stably projectionless, simple C*-algebras

This paper explores the following regularity properties and their relationships for simple, not-necessarily-unital C*-algebras: (i) Jiang-Su stability, (ii) Unperforation in the Cuntz semigroup, and (iii) slow dimension growth (applying only in the case that the C*-algebra is approximately subhomogeneous). An example is given of a simple, separable, nuclear, stably projectionless C*-algebra whose Cuntz semigroup is not almost unperforated. This example is in fact approximately subhomogeneous. It is also shown that, in contrast to this example, when an approximately subhomogeneous simple C*-algebra has slow dimension growth, its Cuntz semigroup is necessarily almost unperforated.

Finite dimensional ordered vector spaces with Riesz interpolation and Effros-Shen's unimodularity conjecture

It is shown that, for any field F \subseteq R, any ordered vector space structure of F^n with Riesz interpolation is given by an inductive limit of sequence with finite stages (F^n,\F_{>= 0}^n) (where n does not change). This relates to a conjecture of Effros and Shen, since disproven, which is given by the same statement, except with F replaced by the integers, Z. Indeed, it shows that although Effros and Shen's conjecture is false, it is true after tensoring with Q.

A classification of finite rank dimension groups by their representations in ordered real vector spaces

This paper systematically studies finite rank dimension groups, as well as finite dimensional ordered real vector spaces with Riesz interpolation. We provide an explicit description and classification of finite rank dimension groups, in the following sense. We show that for each n, there are (up to isomorphism) finitely many ordered real vector spaces of dimension n that have Riesz interpolation, and we give an explicit model for each of them in terms of combinatorial data. We show that every finite rank dimension group can be realized as a subgroup of a finite dimensional ordered real vector space with Riesz interpolation via a canonical embedding. We then characterize which of the subgroups of a finite dimensional ordered real vector space have Riesz interpolation (and are therefore dimension groups).

Hilbert C*-modules over a commutative C*-algebra

This paper studies the problems of embedding and isomorphism for countably generated Hilbert C*-modules over commutative C*-algebras. When the fibre dimensions differ sufficiently, relative to the dimension of the spectrum, we show that there is an embedding between the modules. This result continues to hold over recursive subhomogeneous C*-algebras. For certain modules, including all modules over $C_0(X)$ when $dim X \leq 3$, isomorphism and embedding are determined by the restrictions to the sets where the fibre dimensions are constant. These considerations yield results for the Cuntz semigroup, including a computation of the Cuntz semigroup for $C_0(X)$ when $dim X \leq 3$, in terms of cohomological data about $X$.

The Cuntz semigroup of continuous functions into certain simple C*-algebras

This paper contains computations of the Cuntz semigroup of separable C*-algebras of the form C_0(X,A), where A is a unital, simple, Z-stable ASH algebra. The computations describe the Cuntz semigroup in terms of Murray-von Neumann semigroups of C(K,A) for compact subsets K of X. In particular, the computation shows that the Elliott invariant is functorially equivalent to the invariant given by the Cuntz semigroup of C(T,A). These results are a contribution towards the goal of using the Cuntz semigroup in the classification of well-behaved non-simple C*-algebras.
