QDQ vs. UCT

This is a survey of recent progress in the structure and classification theory of nuclear C*-algebras. In particular, I outline how the Universal Coefficient Theorem ensures a positive answer to the quasidiagonality question in the presence of faithful traces. This has strong consequences for the regularity conjecture and the classification problem for separable, simple, nuclear C*-algebras. Moreover, it entails a positive solution to Rosenberg's conjecture on quasidiagonality of reduced C*-algebras of discrete amenable groups. This note is largely based on a joint paper with Aaron Tikuisis and Stuart White.

Quasidiagonality of nuclear C*-algebras

We prove that faithful traces on separable and nuclear C*-algebras in the UCT class are quasidiagonal. This has a number of consequences. Firstly, by results of many hands, the classification of unital, separable, simple and nuclear C*-algebras of finite nuclear dimension which satisfy the UCT is now complete. Secondly, our result links the finite to the general version of the Toms-Winter conjecture in the expected way and hence clarifies the relation between decomposition rank and nuclear dimension. Finally, we confirm the Rosenberg conjecture: discrete, amenable groups have quasidiagonal C*-algebras.

Classifying crossed product C*-algebras

I combine recent results in the structure theory of nuclear C*-algebras and in topological dynamics to classify certain types of crossed products in terms of their Elliott invariants. In particular, transformation group C*-algebras associated to free minimal Z^d-actions on the Cantor set with compact space of ergodic measures are classified by their ordered K-theory. In fact, the respective statement holds for finite dimensional compact metrizable spaces, provided that projections of the crossed products separate tracial states. Moreover, C*-algebras associated to certain minimal homeomorphisms of odd dimensional spheres are only determined by their spaces of invariant Borel probability measures (without a condition on the space of ergodic measures). Finally, I show that for a large collection of classifiable C*-algebras, crossed products by Z^d-actions are generically again classifiable.

The Rokhlin property vs. Rokhlin dimension 1 on unital Kirchberg algebras

We investigate symmetries on unital Kirchberg algebras with respect to the Rokhlin property and finite Rokhlin dimension. In stark contrast to the restrictiveness of the Rokhlin property, every such outer action has Rokhlin dimension at most 1. A consequence of these observations is a relationship between the nuclear dimension of an $\mathcal{O}_\infty$-absorbing C*-algebra and its $\mathcal{O}_2$-stabilization. A more direct and alternative approach to this is given as well. Several applications of this relationship are discussed to cover a fairly large class of $\mathcal{O}_\infty$-absorbing C*-algebras that turn out to have finite nuclear dimension.

Rokhlin dimension and C*-dynamics

We develop the concept of Rokhlin dimension for integer and for finite group actions on C*-algebras. Our notion generalizes the so-called Rokhlin property, which can be thought of as Rokhlin dimension 0. We show that finite Rokhlin dimension is prevalent and appears in cases in which the Rokhlin property cannot be expected: the property of having finite Rokhlin dimension is generic for automorphisms of Z-stable C*-algebras, where Z denotes the Jiang-Su algebra. Moreover, crossed products by automorphisms with finite Rokhlin dimension preserve the property of having finite nuclear dimension, and under a mild additional hypothesis also preserve Z-stability. In topological dynamics our notion may be interpreted as a topological version of the classical Rokhlin lemma: automorphisms arising from minimal homeomorphisms of finite dimensional compact metrizable spaces always have finite Rokhlin dimension. The latter result has by now been generalized by Szabo to the case of free and aperiodic integer (in fact, Z^d) actions on compact metrizable and finite dimensional spaces.

The Cuntz semigroup and stability of close C*-algebras

We prove that separable C*-algebras which are completely close in a natural uniform sense have isomorphic Cuntz semigroups, continuing a line of research developed by Kadison - Kastler, Christensen, and Khoshkam. This result has several applications: we are able to prove that the property of stability is preserved by close C*-algebras provided that one algebra has stable rank one; close C*-algebras must have affinely homeomorphic spaces of lower-semicontinuous quasitraces; strict comparison is preserved by sufficient closeness of C*-algebras. We also examine C*-algebras which have a positive answer to Kadison's Similarity Problem, as these algebras are completely close whenever they are close. A sample consequence is that sufficiently close C*-algebras have isomorphic Cuntz semigroups when one algebra absorbs the Jiang-Su algebra tensorially.

UHF slicing and classification of nuclear C*-algebras

In this paper we show that certain simple locally recursive subhomogeneous (RSH) C*-algebras are tracially approximately interval algebras after tensoring with the universal UHF algebra. This involves a linear algebraic encoding of the structure of the local RSH algebra allowing us to find a path through the algebra which looks like a discrete version of [0,1] and exhausts most of the algebra. We produce an actual copy of the interval and use properties of C*-algebras tensored with UHF algebras to move the honest interval underneath the discrete version. It follows from our main result that such C*-algebras are classifiable by Elliott invariants. Our theorem requires finitely many tracial states that all induce the same state on the K_0-group; in particular we do not require that projections separate tracial states. We apply our results to classify some examples of C*-algebras constructed by Elliott to exhaust the invariant. We also give an alternate way to classify examples of Lin and Matui of C*-algebras of minimal dynamical systems. In this way our result can be viewed as a first step towards removing the requirement that projections separate tracial states in the classification theorem for C*-algebras of minimal dynamical systems given by Toms and the second named author.

Decomposition rank of Z-stable C*-algebras

We show that C*-algebras of the form C(X) \otimes Z, where X is compact and Hausdorff and Z denotes the Jiang--Su algebra, have decomposition rank at most 2. This amounts to a dimension reduction result for C*-bundles with sufficiently regular fibres. It establishes an important case of a conjecture on the fine structure of nuclear C*-algebras of Toms and the second named author, even in a nonsimple setting, and gives evidence that the topological dimension of noncommutative spaces is governed by fibres rather than base spaces.

The generator problem for Z-stable C*-algebras

The generator problem was posed by Kadison in 1967, and it remains open until today. We provide a solution for the class of C*-algebras absorbing the Jiang-Su algebra Z tensorially. More precisely, we show that every unital, separable, Z-stable C*-algebras A is singly generated, which means that there exists an element x in A that is not contained in any proper sub-C*-algebra of A. To give applications of our result, we observe that Z can be embedded into the reduced group C*-algebra of a discrete group that contains a non-cyclic, free subgroup. It follows that certain tensor products with reduced group C*-algebras are singly generated. In particular, the tensor product of two reduced free group C*-algebras is singly generated.

Nuclear dimension and Z-stability of pure C*-algebras

In this article I study a number of topological and algebraic dimension type properties of simple C*-algebras and their interplay. In particular, a simple C*-algebra is defined to be (tracially) (m,\bar{m})-pure, if it has (strong tracial) m-comparison and is (tracially) \bar{m}-almost divisible. These notions are related to each other, and to nuclear dimension. The main result says that if a separable, simple, nonelementary, unital C*-algebra A with locally finite nuclear dimension is (m,\bar{m})-pure, then it absorbs the Jiang-Su algebra Z tensorially. It follows that A is Z-stable if and only if it has the Cuntz semigroup of a Z-stable C*-algebra. The result may be regarded as a version of Kirchberg's celebrated theorem that separable, simple, nuclear, purely infinite C*-algebras absorb the Cuntz algebra O_\infty tensorially. As a corollary we obtain that finite nuclear dimension implies Z-stability for separable, simple, nonelementary, unital C*-algebras; this settles an important case of a conjecture by Toms and the author. The main result also has a number of consequences for Elliott's program to classify nuclear C*-algebras by their K-theory data. In particular, it completes the classification of simple, unital, approximately homogeneous algebras with slow dimension growth by their Elliott invariants, a question left open in the Elliott-Gong-Li classification of simple AH algebras. Another consequence is that for simple, unital, approximately subhomogeneous algebras, slow dimension growth and Z-stability are equivalent. In the case where projections separate traces, this completes the classification of simple, unital, approximately subhomogeneous algebras with slow dimension growth by their ordered K-groups.

An algebraic approach to the radius of comparison

The radius of comparison is an invariant for unital C*-algebras which extends the theory of covering dimension to noncommutative spaces. We extend its definition to general C*-algebras, and give an algebraic (as opposed to functional-theoretic) reformulation. This yields new permanence properties for the radius of comparison which strengthen its analogy with covering dimension for commutative spaces. We then give several applications of these results. New examples of C*-algebras with finite radius of comparison are given, and the question of when the Cuntz classes of finitely generated Hilbert modules form a hereditary subset of the Cuntz semigroup is addressed. Most interestingly, perhaps, we treat the question of when a full hereditary subalgebra B of a stable C*-algebra A is itself stable, giving a characterization in terms of the radius of comparison. We also use the radius of comparison to quantify the least n for which a C*-algebra D without bounded 2-quasitraces or unital quotients has the property that M_n(D) is stable.

Minimal dynamics and Z-stable classification

Let X be an infinite compact metric space, α: X \to X a minimal homeomorphism, u the unitary implementing αin the transformation group C*-algebra, and S a class of separable nuclear C*-algebras that contains all unital hereditary C*-subalgebras of C*-algebras in S. Motivated by the success of tracial approximation by finite dimensional C*-algebras as an abstract characterization of classifiable C*-algebras and the idea that classification results for C*-algebras tensored with UHF algebras can be used to derive classification results up to tensoring with the Jiang-Su algebra Z, we prove that the transformation group C*-algebra tensored with a UHF algebra is tracially approximately S if there exists a y in X such that a certain C*-subalgebra is tracially approximately S. If the class S consists of finite dimensional C*-algebras, this can be used to deduce classification up to tensoring with Z for C*-algebras associated to minimal dynamical systems where projections separate tracial states. This is done without making any assumptions on the real rank or stable rank of either the transformation group C*-algebra or the C*-subalgebra, nor on the dimension of X. The result is a key step in the classification of C*-algebras associated to uniquely ergodic minimal dynamical systems by their ordered K-groups. It also sets the stage to provide further classification results for those C*-algebras of minimal dynamical systems where projections do not necessarily separate traces.

Perturbations of nuclear C*-algebras

Kadison and Kastler introduced a natural metric on the collection of all C*-subalgebras of the bounded operators on a separable Hilbert space. They conjectured that sufficiently close algebras are unitarily conjugate. We establish this conjecture when one algebra is separable and nuclear. We also consider one-sided versions of these notions, and we obtain embeddings from certain near inclusions involving separable nuclear C*-algebras. At the end of the paper we demonstrate how our methods lead to improved characterisations of some of the types of algebras that are of current interest in the classification programme.
