Multi-component Toda lattice hierarchy

We give a detailed account of the N -component Toda lattice hierarchy. This hierarchy is an extended version of the one introduced by Ueno and Takasaki. Our version contains N discrete variables rather than one. We start from the Lax formalism, deduce the bilinear relation for the wave functions from it and then, based on the latter, prove existence of the tau-function. We also show how the multi-component Toda lattice hierarchy is embedded into the universal hierarchy which is basically the multi-component KP hierarchy. At last, we show how the bilinear integral equation for the tau-function can be obtained using the free fermion technique. An example of exact solutions (a multi-component analogue of one-soliton solutions) is given.

Time discretization of the deformed Ruijsenaars-Schneider system

We obtain Bäcklund transformations and integrable time discretization of the recently introduced deformed Ruijsenaars-Schneider many-body system which is the dynamical system for poles of elliptic solutions to the Toda lattice with constraint of type B. We also show that the deformed Ruijsenaars-Schneider system in discrete time is the dynamical system for poles of elliptic solutions to the fully discrete Kadomtsev-Petviashvili equation of type B. Besides, we suggest a field analogue of the deformed Ruijsenaars-Schneider system on a space-time lattice.

Dyson gas on a curved contour

We introduce and study a model of a logarithmic gas with inverse temperature $β$ on an arbitrary smooth closed contour in the plane. This model generalizes Dyson's gas (the $β$-ensemble) on the unit circle. We compute the non-vanishing terms of the large $N$ expansion of the free energy ($N$ is the number of particles) by iterating the "loop equation" that is the Ward identity with respect to reparametrizations and dilatation of the contour. We show that the main contribution to the free energy is expressed through the spectral determinant of the Neumann jump operator associated with the contour, or equivalently through the Fredholm determinant of the Neumann-Poincare (double layer) operator. This result connects the statistical mechanics of the Dyson gas to the spectral geometry of the interior and exterior domains of the supporting contour.

Scalar products of Bethe vectors in the 8-vertex model

We obtain a determinant representation of normalized scalar products of on-shell and off-shell Bethe vectors in the inhomogeneous 8-vertex model. We consider the case of rational anisotropy parameter and use the generalized algebraic Bethe ansatz approach. Our method is to obtain a system of linear equations for the scalar products, prove its solvability and solve it in terms of determinants of explicitly known matrices.

Constrained Toda hierarchy and turning points of the Ruijsenaars-Schneider model

We introduce a new integrable hierarchy of nonlinear differential-difference equations which we call constrained Toda hierarchy (C-Toda). It can be regarded as a certain subhierarchy of the 2D Toda lattice obtained by imposing the constraint $\bar {\cal L}={\cal L}^†$ on the two Lax operators (in the symmetric gauge). We prove the existence of the tau-function of the C-Toda hierarchy and show that it is the square root of the 2D Toda lattice tau-function. In this and some other respects the C-Toda is a Toda analogue of the CKP hierarchy. It is also shown that zeros of the tau-function of elliptic solutions satisfy the dynamical equations of the Ruijsenaars-Schneider model restricted to turning points in the phase space. The spectral curve has holomorphic involution which interchange the marked points in which the Baker-Akhiezer function has essential singularities.

Loewner equations and reductions of dispersionless hierarchies

The equations of Loewner type can be derived in two very different contexts: one of them is complex analysis and the theory of parametric conformal maps and the other one is the theory of integrable systems. In this paper we compare the both approaches. After recalling the derivation of Löwner equations based on complex analysis we review one- and multi-variable reductions of dispersionless integrable hierarhies (dKP, dBKP, dToda, and dDKP). The one-vaiable reductions are described by solutions of different versions of Loewner equation: chordal (rational) for dKP, quadrant for dBKP, radial (trigonometric) for dToda and elliptic for DKP. We also discuss multi-variable reductions which are given by a system of Loewner equations supplemented by a system of partial differential equations of hydrodynamic type. The solvability of the hydrodynamic type system can be proved by means of the generalized hodograph method.

Quantum-classical duality for Gaudin magnets with boundary

We establish a remarkable relationship between the quantum Gaudin models with boundary and the classical many-body integrable systems of Calogero-Moser type associated with the root systems of classical Lie algebras (B, C and D). We show that under identification of spectra of the Gaudin Hamiltonians $H_j^{\rm G}$ with particles velocities $\dot q_j$ of the classical model all integrals of motion of the latter take zero values. This is the generalization of the quantum-classical duality observed earlier for Gaudin models with periodic boundary conditions and Calogero-Moser models associated with the root system of the type A.

KP hierarchy and trigonometric Calogero-Moser hierarchy

We consider trigonometric solutions of the KP hierarchy. It is known that their poles move as particles of the Calogero-Moser model with trigonometric potential. We show that this correspondence can be extended to the level of hierarchies: the evolution of the poles with respect to the $k$-th hierarchical time of the KP hierarchy is governed by a Hamiltonian which is a linear combination of the first $k$ higher Hamiltonians of the trigonometric Calogero-Moser hierarchy.

Toda lattice hierarchy and trigonometric Ruijsenaars-Schneider hierarchy

We consider solutions of the 2D Toda lattice hierarchy which are trigonometric functions of the ``zeroth'' time $t_0=x$. It is known that their poles move as particles of the trigonometric Ruijsenaars-Schneider model. We extend this correspondence to the level of hierarchies: the dynamics of poles with respect to the $m$-th hierarchical time $t_m$ (respectively, $\bar t_m$) of the 2D Toda lattice hierarchy is shown to be governed by the Hamiltonian which is proportional to the $m$-th Hamiltonian $\mbox{tr}\, L^m$ (respectively, $\mbox{tr}\, L^{-m}$) of the Ruijsenaars-Schneider model, where $L$ is the Lax matrix.

Theta vocabulary I

This paper is an annotated list of transformation properties and identities satisfied by the four theta functions $θ_1$, $θ_2$, $θ_3$, $θ_4$ of one complex variable, presented in a ready-to-use form. An attempt is made to reveal a pattern behind various identities for the theta-functions. It is shown that all possible 3, 4 and 5-term identities of degree four emerge as algebraic consequences of the six fundamental bilinear 3-term identities connecting the theta-functions with modular parameters $τ$ and $2τ$.

Trigonometric version of quantum-classical duality in integrable systems

We extend the quantum-classical duality to the trigonometric (hyperbolic) case. The duality establishes an explicit relationship between the classical N-body trigonometric Ruijsenaars-Schneider model and the inhomogeneous twisted XXZ spin chain on N sites. Similarly to the rational version, the spin chain data fixes a certain Lagrangian submanifold in the phase space of the classical integrable system. The inhomogeneity parameters are equal to the coordinates of particles while the velocities of classical particles are proportional to the eigenvalues of the spin chain Hamiltonians (residues of the properly normalized transfer matrix). In the rational version of the duality, the action variables of the Ruijsenaars-Schneider model are equal to the twist parameters with some multiplicities defined by quantum (occupation) numbers. In contrast to the rational version, in the trigonometric case there is a splitting of the spectrum of action variables (eigenvalues of the classical Lax matrix). The limit corresponding to the classical Calogero-Sutherland system and quantum trigonometric Gaudin model is also described as well as the XX limit to free fermions.

Dispersionless DKP hierarchy and elliptic Lowner equation

We show that the dispersionless DKP hierarchy (the dispersionless limit of the Pfaff lattice) admits a suggestive reformulation through elliptic functions. We also consider one-variable reductions of the dispersionless DKP hierarchy and show that they are described by an elliptic version of the Lowner equation. With a particular choice of the driving function, the latter appears to be closely related to the Painleve VI equation with special choice of parameters.

Laplacian growth in a channel and Hurwitz numbers

We study the integrable structure of the 2D Laplacian growth problem with zero surface tension in an infinite channel with periodic boundary conditions in the transverse direction. Similar to the Laplacian growth in radial geometry, this problem can be embedded into the 2D Toda lattice hierarchy in the zero dispersion limit. However, the relevant solution to the hierarchy is different. We characterize this solution by the string equations and construct the corresponding dispersionless tau-function. This tau-function is shown to coincide with the genus-zero part of the generating function for double Hurwitz numbers.

Quantum Gaudin model and classical KP hierarchy

This short note is a review of the intriguing connection between the quantum Gaudin model and the classical KP hierarchy recently established in [1]. We construct the generating function of integrals of motion for the quantum Gaudin model with twisted boundary conditions (the master T-operator) and show that it satisfies the bilinear identity and Hirota equations for the classical KP hierarchy. This implies that zeros of eigenvalues of the master $T$-operator in the spectral parameter have the same dynamics as the Calogero-Moser system of particles.

Spectrum of Quantum Transfer Matrices via Classical Many-Body Systems

In this paper we clarify the relationship between inhomogeneous quantum spin chains and classical integrable many-body systems. It provides an alternative (to the nested Bethe ansatz) method for computation of spectra of the spin chains. Namely, the spectrum of the quantum transfer matrix for the inhomogeneous ${\mathfrak g}{\mathfrak l}_n$-invariant XXX spin chain on $N$ sites with twisted boundary conditions can be found in terms of velocities of particles in the rational $N$-body Ruijsenaars-Schneider model. The possible values of the velocities are to be found from intersection points of two Lagrangian submanifolds in the phase space of the classical model. One of them is the Lagrangian hyperplane corresponding to fixed coordinates of all $N$ particles and the other one is an $N$-dimensional Lagrangian submanifold obtained by fixing levels of $N$ classical Hamiltonians in involution. The latter are determined by eigenvalues of the twist matrix. To support this picture, we give a direct proof that the eigenvalues of the Lax matrix for the classical Ruijsenaars-Schneider model, where velocities of particles are substituted by eigenvalues of the spin chain Hamiltonians, calculated through the Bethe equations, coincide with eigenvalues of the twist matrix, with certain multiplicities. We also prove a similar statement for the ${\mathfrak g}{\mathfrak l}_n$ Gaudin model with $N$ marked points (on the quantum side) and the Calogero-Moser system with $N$ particles (on the classical side). The realization of the results obtained in terms of branes and supersymmetric gauge theories is also discussed.

Symmetric solutions of the dispersionless Toda hierarchy and associated conformal dynamics

Under certain reality conditions, a general solution to the dispersionless Toda lattice hierarchy describes deformations of simply-connected plane domains with a smooth boundary. The solution depends on an arbitrary (real positive) function of two variables which plays the role of a density or a conformal metric in the plane. We consider in detail the important class of symmetric solutions characterized by the density functions that depend only on the distance from the origin and that are positive and regular in an annulus $r_0< |z|<r_1$. We construct the dispersionless tau-function which gives formal local solution to the inverse potential problem and to the Riemann mapping problem and discuss the associated conformal dynamics related to viscous flows in the Hele-Shaw cell.

Classical-Quantum Correspondence and Functional Relations for Painleve Equations

In the light of the Quantum Painleve-Calogero Correspondence established in our previous papers [1,2], we investigate the inverse problem. We imply that this type of the correspondence (Classical-Quantum Correspondence) holds true and find out what kind of potentials arise from the compatibility conditions of the related linear problems. The latter conditions are written as functional equations for the potentials depending on a choice of a single function - the left-upper element of the Lax connection. The conditions of the Correspondence impose restrictions on this function. In particular, it satisfies the heat equation. It is shown that all natural choices of this function (rational, hyperbolic and elliptic) reproduce exactly the Painleve list of equations. In this sense the Classical-Quantum Correspondence can be regarded as an alternative definition of the Painleve equations.

The master T-operator for vertex models with trigonometric $R$-matrices as classical tau-function

The construction of the master T-operator recently suggested in Alexandrov et al. (arXiv:1112.3310) is applied to integrable vertex models and associated quantum spin chains with trigonometric R-matrices. The master T-operator is a generating function for commuting transfer matrices of integrable vertex models depending on infinitely many parameters. At the same time it turns out to be the tau-function of an integrable hierarchy of classical soliton equations in the sense that it satisfies the the same bilinear Hirota equations. The class of solutions of the Hirota equations that correspond to eigenvalues of the master T-operator is characterized and its relation to the classical Ruijsenaars-Schneider system of particles is discussed.

Intertwining operators for Sklyanin algebra and elliptic hypergeometric series

Intertwining operators for infinite-dimensional representations of the Sklyanin algebra with spins l and -l-1 are constructed using the technique of intertwining vectors for elliptic L-operator. They are expressed in terms of elliptic hypergeometric series with operator argument. The intertwining operators obtained (W-operators) serve as building blocks for the elliptic R-matrix which intertwines tensor product of two L-operators taken in infinite-dimensional representations of the Sklyanin algebra with arbitrary spin. The Yang-Baxter equation for this R-matrix follows from simpler equations of the star-triangle type for the W-operators. A natural graphic representation of the objects and equations involved in the construction is used.

Quantum Painleve-Calogero Correspondence

The Painleve-Calogero correspondence is extended to auxiliary linear problems associated with Painleve equations. The linear problems are represented in a new form which has a suggestive interpretation as a "quantized" version of the Painleve-Calogero correspondence. Namely, the linear problem responsible for the time evolution is brought into the form of non-stationary Schrodinger equation in imaginary time, $\p_t ψ=(1/2\, \p_x^2 +V(x,t))ψ$, whose Hamiltonian is a natural quantization of the classical Calogero-like Hamiltonian $H=1/2\, p^2 +V(x,t)$ for the corresponding Painleve equation.

Canonical and grand canonical partition functions of Dyson gases as tau-functions of integrable hierarchies and their fermionic realization

The partition function for a canonical ensemble of 2D Coulomb charges in a background potential (the Dyson gas) is realized as a vacuum expectation value of a group-like element constructed in terms of free fermionic operators. This representation provides an explicit identification of the partition function with a tau-function of the 2D Toda lattice hierarchy. Its dispersionless (quasiclassical) limit yields the tau-function for analytic curves encoding the integrable structure of the inverse potential problem and parametric conformal maps. A similar fermionic realization of partition functions for grand canonical ensembles of 2D Coulomb charges in the presence of an ideal conductor is also suggested. Their representation as Fredholm determinants is given and their relation to integrable hierarchies, growth problems and conformal maps is discussed.

Whitham hierarchy in growth problems

We discuss the recently established equivalence between the Laplacian growth in the limit of zero surface tension and the universal Whitham hierarchy known in soliton theory. This equivalence allows one to distinguish a class of exact solutions to the Laplacian growth problem in the multiply-connected case. These solutions corerespond to finite-dimensional reductions of the Whitham hierarchy representable as equations of hydrodynamic type which are solvable by means of the generalized hodograph method.

Vacuum curves of elliptic L-operators and representations of Sklyanin algebra

An algebro-geometric approach to representations of Sklyanin algebra is proposed. To each 2 \times 2 quantum L-operator an algebraic curve parametrizing its possible vacuum states is associated. This curve is called the vacuum curve of the L-operator. An explicit description of the vacuum curve for quantum L-operators of the integrable spin chain of XYZ type with arbitrary spin $\ell$ is given. The curve is highly reducible. For half-integer $\ell$ it splits into $\ell +{1/2}$ components isomorphic to an elliptic curve. For integer $\ell$ it splits into $\ell$ elliptic components and one rational component. The action of elements of the L-operator to functions on the vacuum curve leads to a new realization of the Sklyanin algebra by difference operators in two variables restricted to an invariant functional subspace.

A survey of Hirota's difference equations

A review of selected topics in Hirota's bilinear difference equation (HBDE) is given. This famous 3-dimensional difference equation is known to provide a canonical integrable discretization for most important types of soliton equations. Similarly to the continuous theory, HBDE is a member of an infinite hierarchy. The central point of our exposition is a discrete version of the zero curvature condition explicitly written in the form of discrete Zakharov-Shabat equations for M-operators realized as difference or pseudo-difference operators. A unified approach to various types of M-operators and zero curvature representations is suggested. Different reductions of HBDE to 2-dimensional equations are considered. Among them discrete counterparts of the KdV, sine-Gordon, Toda chain, relativistic Toda chain and other typical examples are discussed in detail.

Discrete Hirota's equation in quantum integrable models

The recent progress in revealing classical integrable structures in quantum models solved by Bethe ansatz is reviewed. Fusion relations for eigenvalues of quantum transfer matrices can be written in the form of classical Hirota's bilinear difference equation. This equation is also known as the completely discretized version of the 2D Toda lattice. We explain how one obtains the specific quantum results by solving the classical equation. The auxiliary linear problem for the Hirota equation is shown to generalize Baxter's T-Q relation.

Spin generalization of the Ruijsenaars-Schneider model, non-abelian 2D Toda chain and representations of Sklyanin algebra

Action-angle type variables for spin generalizations of the elliptic Ruijsenaars-Schneider system are constructed. The equations of motion of these systems are solved in terms of Riemann theta-functions. It is proved that these systems are isomorphic to special elliptic solutions of the non-abelian 2D Toda chain. A connection between the finite gap solutions of solitonic equations and representations of the Sklyanin algebra is revealed and discrete analogs of the Lame operators are introduced. A simple way to construct representations of the Sklyanin algebra by difference operators is suggested.

The Asymptotics of the Correlations Functions in $(1+1)d$ Quantum Field Theory From Finite Size Effects in Conformal Theories

Using the finite-size effects the scaling dimensions and correlation functions of the main operators in continuous and lattice models of 1d spinless Bose-gas with pairwise interaction of rather general form are obtained. The long-wave properties of these systems can be described by the Gaussian model with central charge $c=1$. The disorder operators of the extended Gaussian model are found to correspond to some non-local operators in the {\it XXZ} Heisenberg antiferromagnet. Just the same approach is applicable to fermionic systems. Scaling dimensions of operators and correlation functions in the systems of interacting Fermi-particles are obtained. We present a universal treatment for $1d$ systems of different kinds which is independent of the exact integrability and gives universal expressions for critical exponents through the thermodynamic characteristics of the system.

Towards unified theory of $2d$ gravity

We introduce a new 1-matrix model with arbitrary potential and the matrix-valued background field. Its partition function is a $τ$-function of KP-hierarchy, subjected to a kind of ${\cal L}_{-1}$-constraint. Moreover, partition function behaves smoothly in the limit of infinitely large matrices. If the potential is equal to $X^{K+1}$, this partition function becomes a $τ$-function of $K$-reduced KP-hierarchy, obeying a set of ${\cal W} _K$-algebra constraints identical to those conjectured in \cite{FKN91} for double-scaling continuum limit of $(K-1)$-matrix model. In the case of $K=2$ the statement reduces to the early established \cite{MMM91b} relation between Kontsevich model and the ordinary $2d$ quantum gravity . Kontsevich model with generic potential may be considered as interpolation between all the models of $2d$ quantum gravity with $c<1$ preserving the property of integrability and the analogue of string equation.
