Novel elementary excitations in spin-1/2 antiferromagnets on the triangular lattice

We discuss spin-$\frac12$ Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the triangular lattice using the recently proposed bond-operator technique (BOT). We use the variant of the BOT which takes into account all spin degrees of freedom in the magnetic unit cell containing three spins. Apart from conventional magnons known from the spin-wave theory (SWT), there are novel high-energy collective excitations in the BOT which are built from high-energy excitations of the magnetic unit cell. We obtain also another novel high-energy quasiparticle which has no counterpart not only in the SWT but also in the harmonic approximation of the BOT. All observed elementary excitations produce visible anomalies in dynamical spin correlators. We show that quantum fluctuations considerably change properties of conventional magnons predicted by the SWT. The effect of a small easy-plane anisotropy is discussed. The anomalous spin dynamics with multiple peaks in the dynamical structure factor is explained that was observed recently experimentally in $\rm Ba_3CoSb_2O_9$ and which the SWT could not describe even qualitatively.

Critical temperature and low-energy excitations in gapped spin systems with defects

We discuss theoretically the magnetically ordered phase induced by magnetic and nonmagnetic impurities in three-dimensional and quasi-low-dimensional systems with singlet ground states separated by a gap from excited triplet states. Using ideas of the percolation theory, we estimate the transition temperature $T_N(n)$ to the Néel phase at a small concentration $n$ of defects, derive the density of states of low-energy elementary excitations, and examine the contribution of these excitations to the specific heat and magnetization. Our expressions for $T_N(n)$ and for the specific heat describe well available experimental findings obtained in various appropriate systems: spin-$\frac12$ dimer materials, spin-ladder compounds, spin-Peierls and Haldane chain materials. However, our expression for $T_N(n)$ differs considerably from many of those proposed before.

Multiple magnon modes in spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet on simple square lattice in strong magnetic field

We discuss spin-$\frac12$ Heisenberg antiferromagnet on simple square lattice in magnetic field $H$ using recently proposed bond-operator technique. It is well known that magnetically ordered phases of quantum magnets are well described at least qualitatively by the conventional spin-wave theory that only introduces quantum corrections into the classical solution of the problem. We observe that quantum fluctuations change drastically dynamical properties of the considered model at $H$ close to its saturation value: the dynamical structure factor shows anomalies corresponding to Green's function poles which have no counterparts in the spin-wave theory. That is, quantum fluctuations produce multiple short-wavelength magnon modes not changing qualitatively the long-wavelength spin dynamics. Our results are in agreement with previous quantum Monte-Carlo simulations and exact diagonalization of finite clusters.

Phase competition in frustrated anisotropic antiferromagnet in strong magnetic field

We discuss theoretically a frustrated Heisenberg antiferromagnet in magnetic field close to the saturation one. It is demonstrated that a small biaxial anisotropy and/or the magnetic dipolar interaction produce a delicate balance between phases with a commensurate canted, incommensurate helical (conical), and fan spin orderings. As a result, different sequences of phase transitions are realized depending on values of these small anisotropic interactions. We derive analytical expressions for critical fields and ground-state energies of the phases which are in a quantitative agreement with our and previous Monte-Carlo simulations.

Order-by-disorder effects in antiferromagnets on face-centered cubic lattice

We discuss the role of quantum fluctuations in Heisenberg antiferromagnets on face-centered cubic lattice with small dipolar interaction in which the next-nearest-neighbor exchange coupling dominates over the nearest-neighbor one. It is well known that a collinear magnetic structure which contains (111) ferromagnetic planes arranged antiferromagnetically along one of the space diagonals of the cube is stabilized in this model via order-by-disorder mechanism. On the mean-field level, the dipolar interaction forces spins to lie within (111) planes. By considering 1/S - corrections to the ground state energy, we demonstrate that quantum fluctuations lead to an anisotropy within (111) planes favoring three equivalent directions for the staggered magnetization (e.g., $[11\overline{2}]$, $[1\overline{2}1]$, and $[\overline{2}11]$ directions for (111) plane). Such in-plane anisotropy was obtained experimentally in related materials MnO, $α$-MnS, $α$-MnSe, EuTe, and EuSe. We find that the order-by-disorder mechanism can contribute significantly to the value of the in-plane anisotropy in EuTe. Magnon spectrum is also derived in the first order in 1/S.

Spin-ice behavior of three-dimensional inverse opal-like magnetic structures: micromagnetic simulations

We perform micromagnetic simulations of the magnetization distribution in inverse opal-like structures (IOLS) made from ferromagnetic materials (nickel and cobalt). It is shown that the unit cell of these complex structures, whose characteristic length is approximately 700 nm, can be divided into a set of structural elements some of which behave like Ising-like objects. A spin-ice behavior of IOLS is observed in a broad range of external magnetic fields. Numerical results describe successfully the experimental hysteresis curves of the magnetization in Ni- and Co-based IOLS. We conclude that ferromagnetic IOLS can be considered as the first realization of three-dimensional artificial spin ice.

Breakdown of long-wavelength magnons in cubic antiferromagnets with dipolar forces at small temperature

Using $1/S$ expansion, we discuss the magnon spectrum of Heisenberg antiferromagnet (AF) on a simple cubic lattice with small dipolar interaction at small temperature $T\ll T_N$, where $T_N$ is the Neel temperature. Similar to 3D and 2D ferromagnets, quantum and thermal fluctuations renormalize greatly the bare gapless spectrum leading to a gap $Δ\sim ω_0$, where $ω_0$ is the characteristic dipolar energy. This gap is accompanied by anisotropic corrections to the free energy which make the cube edges easy directions for the staggered magnetization (dipolar anisotropy). In accordance with previous results, we find that dipolar forces split the magnon spectrum into two branches. This splitting makes possible two types of processes which lead to a considerable enhance of the damping compared to the Heisenberg AF: a magnon decay into two other magnons and a confluence of two magnons. It is found that magnons are well defined quasiparticles in quantum AF. We demonstrate however that a small fraction of long-wavelength magnons can be overdamped in AFs with $S\gg1$ and in quantum AFs with a single-ion anisotropy competing with the dipolar anisotropy. Particular materials are pointed out which can be suitable for experimental observation of this long-wavelength magnons breakdown that contradicts expectation of the quasiparticle concept.

Low-energy singlet excitations in spin- 1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet on square lattice

We present an approach based on a dimer expansion which describes low-energy singlet excitations (singlons) in spin-$\frac12$ Heisenberg antiferromagnet on simple square lattice. An operator ("effective Hamiltonian") is constructed whose eigenvalues give the singlon spectrum. The "effective Hamiltonian" looks like a Hamiltonian of a spin-$\frac12$ magnet in strong external magnetic field and it has a gapped spectrum. It is found that singlet states lie above triplet ones (magnons) in the whole Brillouin zone except in the vicinity of the point $(π,0)$, where their energies are slightly smaller. Based on this finding, we suggest that a magnon decay is possible near $(π,0)$ into another magnon and a singlon which may contribute to the dip of the magnon spectrum near $(π,0)$ and reduce the magnon lifetime. It is pointed out that the singlon-magnon continuum may contribute to the continuum of excitations observed recently near $(π,0)$.

Self-consistent T-matrix approach to Bose-glass in one dimension

Based on self-consistent T-matrix approximation (SCTMA), the Mott insulator - Bose-glass phase transition of one-dimensional noninteracting bosons subject to binary disorder is considered. The results obtained differ essentially from the conventional case of box distribution of the disorder. The Mott insulator - Bose-glass transition is found to exist at arbitrary strength of the impurities. The single particle density of states is calculated within the frame of SCTMA, numerically, and (for infinite disorder strength) analytically. A good agreement is reported between all three methods. We speculate that certain types of the interaction may lead to the Bose-glass - superfluid transition absent in our theory.

Spiral magnets with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction containing defect bonds

We present a theory describing spiral magnets with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) subject to bond disorder at small concentration $c$ of defects. It is assumed that both DMI and exchange coupling are changed on imperfect bonds. Qualitatively the same physical picture is obtained in two models which are considered in detail: B20 cubic helimagnets and layered magnets in which DMI leads to a long-period spiral ordering perpendicular to layers. We find that the distortion of the spiral magnetic ordering around a single imperfect bond is long-range: values of additional turns of spins decay with the distance $r$ to the defect as $1/r^2$ being governed by the Poisson's equation for electric dipole. At finite concentration of randomly distributed imperfect bonds, we calculate correction to the spiral vector. We show that this correction can change the sign of spin chirality even at $c\ll1$ if defects are strong enough. It is demonstrated that impurities lead to a diffuse elastic neutron scattering which has power-law singularities at magnetic Bragg peaks positions. Then, each Bragg peak acquires power-law decaying tails. Corrections are calculated to the magnon energy and to its damping caused by scattering on impurities.

Localized and propagating excitations in gapped phases of spin systems with bond disorder

Using the conventional $T$-matrix approach, we discuss gapped phases in 1D, 2D, and 3D spin systems (both with and without a long range magnetic order) with bond disorder and with weakly interacting bosonic elementary excitations. This work is motivated by recent experimental and theoretical activity in spin-liquid-like systems with disorder and in the disordered interacting boson problem. In particular, we apply our theory to both paramagnetic low-field and fully polarized high-field phases in dimerized spin-$\frac12$ systems and in integer-spin magnets with large single-ion easy-plane anisotropy $\cal D$ with disorder in exchange coupling constants (and/or $\cal D$). The elementary excitation spectrum and the density of states are calculated in the first order in defects concentration $c\ll1$. In 2D and 3D systems, the scattering on defects leads to a finite damping of all propagating excitations in the band except for states lying near its edges. We demonstrate that the analytical approach is inapplicable for states near the band edges and our numerical calculations reveal their localized nature. We find that the damping of propagating excitations can be much more pronounced in considered systems than in magnetically ordered gapless magnets with impurities. In 1D systems, the disorder leads to localization of all states in the band, while those lying far from the band edges (short-wavelength excitations) can look like conventional wavepackets.

Theory of field-induced quantum phase transition in spin dimer system Ba$_3$Cr$_2$O$_8$

Motivated by recent experiments on Ba$_3$Cr$_2$O$_8$, we propose a theory describing low-temperature properties in magnetic field $h$ of dimer spin-$\frac12$ systems on a stacked triangular lattice with spatially anisotropic exchange interactions. Considering the interdimer interaction as a perturbation we derive in the second order the elementary excitations (triplon) spectrum and the effective interaction between triplons at the quantum critical point $h=h_c$ separating the paramagnetic phase ($h<h_c$) and a magnetically ordered one ($h_c<h<h_s$, where $h_s$ is the saturation field). Expressions are derived for $h_c(T)$ and the staggered magnetization $M_\perp(h)$ at $h$ close to $h_c$. We apply the theory to Ba$_3$Cr$_2$O$_8$ and determine exchange constants of the model by fitting the triplon spectrum obtained experimentally. It is demonstrated that in accordance with experimental data the system follows the 3D BEC scenario at $T<1$ K only due to a pronounced anisotropy of the spectrum near its minimum. Our expressions for $h_s$, $h_c(T)$ and $M_\perp(h)$ fit well available experimental data.

Chiral Spin Liquid in two-dimensional XY Helimagnets

We carry out Monte-Carlo simulations to discuss critical properties of a classical two-dimensional XY frustrated helimagnet on a square lattice. We find two successive phase transitions upon the temperature decreasing: the first one is associated with breaking of a discrete Z_2 symmetry and the second one is of the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) type at which the SO(2) symmetry breaks. Thus, a narrow region exists on the phase diagram between lines of the Ising and the BKT transitions that corresponds to a chiral spin liquid.

Spin nematic phase in (quasi-)one-dimensional frustrated magnet in strong magnetic field

We discuss spin-1/2 one-dimensional (1D) and quasi-1D magnets with competing ferromagnetic nearest-neighbor $J_1$ and antiferromagnetic next-nearest-neighbor $J$ exchange interactions in strong magnetic field $H$. It is well known that due to attraction between magnons quantum phase transitions (QPTs) take place at $H=H_s$ from the fully polarized phase to nematic ones if $J>|J_1|/4$. Such a transition at $J>0.368|J_1|$ is characterized by softening of the two-magnon bound-state spectrum. Using a bond operator formalism we propose a bosonic representation of the spin Hamiltonian containing, aside from bosons describing one-magnon spin-1 excitations, a boson describing spin-2 excitations which spectrum coincides at $H\ge H_s$ with the two-magnon bound-state spectrum obtained before. The presence of the bosonic mode in the theory that softens at $H=H_s$ makes substantially standard the QPT consideration. In 1D case at $H<H_s$, we find an expression for the magnetization which describes well existing numerical data. Expressions for spin correlators are obtained which coincide with those derived before either in the limiting case of $J\gg|J_1|$ or using a phenomenological theory. In quasi-1D magnets, we find that the boundary in the $H$--$T$ plane between the fully polarized and the nematic phases is given by $H_s(0)-H_s(T)\propto T^{3/2}$. Simple expressions are obtained in the nematic phase for static spin correlators, spectra of magnons and the soft mode, magnetization and the nematic order parameter. All static two-spin correlation functions are short ranged with the correlation length proportional to $1/\ln(1+|J_1|/J)$. Dynamical spin susceptibilities are discussed and it is shown that the soft mode can be observed experimentally in the longitudinal channel.

Quantum magnets with large single-ion easy-plane anisotropy in transverse magnetic field

We discuss low-temperature properties of magnets with integer spin and large single-ion easy-plane anisotropy $D$ in transverse magnetic field $h$. Considering the exchange interaction between spins as a perturbation and using the diagram technique we derive at $h\sim D$ in the first nonvanishing orders of the perturbation theory thermal corrections to the elementary excitation spectrum, magnetization and specific heat. An expression for the boundary $h_{c1}(T)$ is found in the $h$-$T$ plane between the paramagnetic phase and that with the long range magnetic order. The effective interaction is derived between bosons near the quantum critical point $h_{c1}(0)$. The proposed theory describes well experimental data obtained in $\rm NiCl_2$-$\rm 4SC(NH_2)_2$ (DTN).

Anomalously large damping of long-wavelength quasiparticles caused by long-range interaction

We demonstrate that long-range interaction in a system can lead to a very strong interaction between long-wavelength quasiparticles and make them heavily damped. In particular, we discuss magnon spectrum using 1/S expansion in 3D Heisenberg ferromagnet (FM) with arbitrary small dipolar forces at T<<T_C. We obtain that a fraction of long-wavelength magnons with energies e_k<T has anomalously large damping G_k (ratio G_k/e_k reaches 0.3 for certain k). This effect is observed both in quantum and classical FMs. Remarkably, this result contradicts expectation of the quasiparticle concept according which a weakly excited state of a many-body system can be represented as a collection of weakly interacting elementary excitations. Particular materials are pointed out which are suitable for corresponding experiments.

Spectrum of short-wavelength magnons in two-dimensional quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnet on a square lattice: third order expansion in 1/S

The spectrum of short-wavelength magnons in two-dimensional quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnet on a square lattice is calculated in the third order in $1/S$ expansion. It is shown that $1/S$ series for $S=1/2$ converges fast in the whole Brillouin zone except for the neighborhood of the point ${\bf k}=(π,0)$, at which absolute values of the third and the second order $1/S$-corrections are approximately equal to each other. It is shown that the third order corrections make deeper the roton-like local minimum at ${\bf k}=(π,0)$ improving the agreement with the recent experiments and numerical results in the neighborhood of this point. It is suggested that $1/S$ series converges slowly near ${\bf k}=(π,0)$ also for $S=1$ although the spectrum renormalization would be small in this case due to very small values of high-order $1/S$ corrections.
