Quantum gravity phenomenology at the dawn of the multi-messenger era -- A review

The exploration of the universe has recently entered a new era thanks to the multi-messenger paradigm, characterized by a continuous increase in the quantity and quality of experimental data that is obtained by the detection of the various cosmic messengers (photons, neutrinos, cosmic rays and gravitational waves) from numerous origins. They give us information about their sources in the universe and the properties of the intergalactic medium. Moreover, multi-messenger astronomy opens up the possibility to search for phenomenological signatures of quantum gravity. On the one hand, the most energetic events allow us to test our physical theories at energy regimes which are not directly accessible in accelerators; on the other hand, tiny effects in the propagation of very high energy particles could be amplified by cosmological distances. After decades of merely theoretical investigations, the possibility of obtaining phenomenological indications of Planck-scale effects is a revolutionary step in the quest for a quantum theory of gravity, but it requires cooperation between different communities of physicists (both theoretical and experimental). This review is aimed at promoting this cooperation by giving a state-of-the art account of the interdisciplinary expertise that is needed in the effective search of quantum gravity footprints in the production, propagation and detection of cosmic messengers.

Analogy between the Schwarzschild solution in a noncommutative gauge theory and the Reissner-Nordström metric

We study modifications of the Schwarzschild solution within the noncommutative gauge theory of gravity. In the present analysis, the deformed solutions are obtained by solving the field equations perturbatively, up to the second order in the noncommutativity parameter $Θ$, for both exterior and interior solutions of the equations of motion for $e_μ^a \left(x\right)$. Remarkably, we find that this new noncommutive solution is analogous to the Reissner-Nordström solution in the ordinary spacetime, in which the square of electric charge is replaced by the square of the noncommutativity parameter, but with opposite sign. This amounts to the noncommutative Schwarzschild radius $r_{NCS}$ becoming larger than the usual radius $r_S =2M$, instead of smaller as it happens to the Reissner-Nordström radius $r_{RN}$, implying that $r_{NCS}>r_{S} >r_{RN}$. An intuitive interpretation of this result is mentioned.

How unimodular gravity theories differ from general relativity at quantum level

We investigate path integral quantization of two versions of unimodular gravity. First a fully diffeomorphism-invariant theory is analyzed, which does not include a unimodular condition on the metric, while still being equivalent to other unimodular gravity theories at the classical level. The path integral has the same form as in general relativity (GR), except that the cosmological constant is an unspecified value of a variable, and it thus is unrelated to any coupling constant. When the state of the universe is a superposition of vacuum states, the path integral is extended to include an integral over the cosmological constant. Second, we analyze the standard unimodular theory of gravity, where the metric determinant is fixed by a constraint. Its path integral differs from the one of GR in two ways: the metric of spacetime satisfies the unimodular condition only in average over space, and both the Hamiltonian constraint and the associated gauge condition have zero average over space. Finally, the canonical relation between the given unimodular theories of gravity is established.

Standard Model and Graviweak Unification with (Super)Renormalizable Gravity. Part I: Visible and Invisible Sectors of the Universe

We develop a self-consistent $Spin(4,4)$-invariant model of the unification of gravity with weak $SU(2)$ gauge and Higgs fields in the visible and invisible sectors of our Universe. We consider a general case of the graviweak unification, including the higher-derivative super-renormalizable theory of gravity, which is a unitary, asymptotically-free and perturbatively consistent theory of the quantum gravity.

BRST-Invariant Deformations of Geometric Structures in Topological Field Theories

We study a Lie algebra of formal vector fields $W_n$ with its application to the perturbative deformed holomorphic symplectic structure in the A-model, and a Calabi-Yau manifold with boundaries in the B-model. A relevant concept in the vertex operator algebra and the BRST cohomology is that of the elliptic genera (the one-loop string partition function). We show that the elliptic genera can be written in terms of spectral functions of the hyperbolic three-geometry (which inherits the cohomology structure of BRST-like operator). We show that equivalence classes of deformations are described by a Hochschild cohomology theory of the DG-algebra ${\mathfrak A} = (A, Q)$, $Q =\bar{\partial}+\partial_{\rm deform}$, which is defined to be the cohomology of $(-1)^n Q +d_{\rm Hoch}$. Here $\bar{\partial}$ is the initial non-deformed BRST operator while $\partial_{\rm deform}$ is the deformed part whose algebra is a Lie algebra of linear vector fields ${\rm gl}_n$. We discuss the identification of the harmonic structure $(HT^\bullet(X); HΩ_\bullet(X))$ of affine space $X$ and the group ${\rm Ext}_{X}^n({\cal O}_{\triangle}, {\cal O}_{\triangle})$ (the HKR isomorphism), and bulk-boundary deformation pairing.

Gravi-Weak Unification and Multiple Point Principle

We construct a model unifying gravity with weak $SU(2)$ gauge and "Higgs" scalar fields. We assume the existence of a visible and an invisible (hidden) sector of the Universe. We used the extension of Plebanski's 4-dimensional gravitational theory, in which the fundamental fields are two-forms containing tetrads, spin connections and additional auxiliary fields. Considering a $Spin(4,4)$ invariant extended Plebanski action, we recover the actions in both (visible and invisible) sectors of the Universe. After symmetry breaking of the graviweak (GW) unification, its physical constants (Newton's constants, cosmological constants, YM-couplings, etc.), are determined by a parameter $g_{uni}$ of the GW unification. It is discussed that if this "Higgs" field coming in the GW unification could be the Higgs of the Standard Model, then the idea that its vacuum value could be, according to the Multiple Point Principle, a second minimum of the Higgs field effective potential, turns out not to be viable. Then other scalar "Higgs" field, giving the inflation and axion fields, has a Planck scale expectation value, and could have a better chance of being the scalar field unified with gravity.

Graviweak Unification, Invisible Universe and Dark Energy

We consider a Graviweak Unification model with the assumption of the existence of the hidden (invisible) sector of our Universe parallel to the visible world. This Hidden World (HW) is assumed to be a Mirror World (MW) with broken mirror parity. We start with a diffeomorphism invariant theory of a gauge field valued in a Lie algebra g, which is broken spontaneously to the direct sum of the spacetime Lorentz algebra and the Yang-Mills algebra: $\tilde {\mathfrak g} = {\mathfrak su}(2)^{(grav)}_L \oplus {\mathfrak su}(2)_L$ -- in the ordinary world, and $\tilde {\mathfrak g}' = {{\mathfrak su}(2)'}^{(grav)}_R \oplus {\mathfrak su}(2)'_R$ -- in the hidden world. Using an extension of the Plebanski action for general relativity, we recover the actions for gravity, SU(2) Yang-Mills and Higgs fields in both (visible and invisible) sectors of the Universe, and also the total action. After symmetry breaking, all physical constants, including the Newton's constants, cosmological constants, Yang-Mills couplings, and other parameters, are determined by a single parameter $g$ presented in the initial action, and by the Higgs VEVs. The Dark Energy problem of this model predicts a too large supersymmetric breaking scale ($\sim 10^{10}-10^{12}$ GeV), which is not within the reach of the LHC experiments.

Quantum Black Holes, Elliptic Genera and Spectral Partition Functions

We study M-theory and D-brane quantum partition functions for microscopic black hole ensembles within the context of the AdS/CFT correspondence in terms of highest weight representations of infinite-dimensional Lie algebras, elliptic genera, and Hilbert schemes, and describe their relations to elliptic modular forms. The common feature in our examples lie in the modular properties of the characters of certain representations of the pertinent affine Lie algebras, and in the role of spectral functions of hyperbolic three-geometry associated with q-series in the calculation of elliptic genera. We present new calculations of supergravity elliptic genera on local Calabi-Yau threefolds in terms of BPS invariants and spectral functions, and also of equivariant D-brane elliptic genera on generic toric singularities. We use these examples to conjecture a link between the black hole partition functions and elliptic cohomology.

Quantum Corrections to Bekenstein-Hawking Black Hole Entropy and Gravity Partition Functions

Algebraic aspects of the computation of partition functions for quantum gravity and black holes in $AdS_3$ are discussed. We compute the sub-leading quantum corrections to the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy. It is shown that the quantum corrections to the classical result can be included systematically by making use of the comparison with conformal field theory partition functions, via the $AdS_3/CFT_2$ correspondence. This leads to a better understanding of the role of modular and spectral functions, from the point of view of the representation theory of infinite-dimensional Lie algebras. Besides, the sum of known quantum contributions to the partition function can be presented in a closed form, involving the Patterson-Selberg spectral function. These contributions can be reproduced in a holomorphically factorized theory whose partition functions are associated with the formal characters of the Virasoro modules. We propose a spectral function formulation for quantum corrections to the elliptic genus from supergravity states.

Extended Poincaré supersymmetry in three dimensions and supersymmetric anyons

We classify the unitary representations of the extended Poincaré supergroups in three dimensions. Irreducible unitary representations of any spin can appear, which correspond to supersymmetric anyons. Our results also show that all irreducible unitary representations necessarily have physical momenta. This is in sharp contrast to the ordinary Poincaré group in three dimensions, that admits in addition irreducible unitary representations with non-physical momenta, which are discarded on physical grounds.

Gravity and Mirror Gravity in Plebanski Formulation

We present several theories of four-dimensional gravity in the Plebanski formulation, in which the tetrads and the connections are the independent dynamical variables. We consider the relation between different versions of gravitational theories: Einstenian, dual, 'mirror' gravities and gravity with torsion. According to Plebanski's assumption, our world, in which we live, is described by the self-dual left-handed gravity. We propose that if the Mirror World exists in Nature, then the 'mirror gravity' is the right-handed anti-self-dual gravity with broken mirror parity. Considering a special version of the Riemann--Cartan space-time, which has torsion as additional geometric property, we have shown that in the Plebanski formulation the ordinary and dual sectors of gravity, as well as the gravity with torsion, are equivalent. In this context, we have also developed a 'pure connection gravity' -- a diffeomorphism-invariant gauge theory of gravity. We have calculated the partition function and the effective Lagrangian of this four-dimensional gravity and have investigated the limit of this theory at small distances.

Thermal Casimir-Polder interaction of different atoms with graphene

The thermal correction to the energy of Casimir-Polder interaction of atoms with a suspended graphene membrane described by the Dirac model is investigated. We show that a major impact on the thermal correction is made by the size of the gap in the energy spectrum of graphene quasiparticles. Specifically, if the temperature is much smaller than the gap parameter (alternatively, larger or of the order of the gap parameter), the thermal correction is shown to be relatively small (alternatively, large). We have calculated the free energy of the thermal Casimir-Polder interaction of atoms of He, Na, Rb, and Cs with graphene described by both the hydrodynamic and Dirac models. It is shown that in exact computations using the Dirac model, one should use the polarization operator at nonzero temperature. The computational results for the Casimir-Polder free energy obtained in the framework of hydrodynamic model of graphene are several times larger than in the Dirac model within the separation region below 2$μ$m. We conclude that the theoretical predictions following from the two models can be reliably discriminated in experiments on quantum reflection of different atoms on graphene.

Mirror World and Superstring-Inspired Hidden Sector of the Universe, Dark Matter and Dark Energy

We develop a concept of parallel existence of the ordinary (O) and hidden (H) worlds. We compare two cases: 1) when the hidden sector of the Universe is a mirror counterpart of the ordinary world, and 2) when it is a superstring-inspired shadow world described, in contrast to the mirror world, by a symmetry group (or by a chain of groups), which does not coincide with the ordinary world symmetry group. We construct a cosmological model assuming the existence of the superstring-inspired E_6 unification, broken at the early stage of the Universe to SO(10)\times U(1)_Z - in the O-world, and to SU(6)'\times SU(2)'_θ- in the H-world. As a result, we obtain the low energy symmetry group G'_SM\times SU(2)'_θin the shadow world, instead of the Standard Model group G_SM existing in the O-world. The additional non-Abelian SU(2)'_θgroup with massless gauge fields, "thetons", is responsible for dark energy. Considering a quintessence model of cosmology with an inflaton σand an axion a_θ, which is a pseudo Nambu-Goldstone boson induced by the SU(2)'_θ-group anomaly, we explain the origin of Dark Energy, Dark Matter and Ordinary Matter. In the present model we review all cosmological epochs (inflation, reheating, recombination and nucleosynthesis), and give our version of the baryogenesis. The cosmological constant problem is also briefly discussed.

Towards an Axiomatic Formulation of Noncommutative Quantum Field Theory

We propose new Wightman functions as vacuum expectation values of products of field operators in the noncommutative space-time. These Wightman functions involve the $\star$-product among the fields, compatible with the twisted Poincaré symmetry of the noncommutative quantum field theory (NC QFT). In the case of only space-space noncommutativity ($θ_{0i}=0$), we prove the CPT theorem using the noncommutative form of the Wightman functions. We also show that the spin-statistics theorem, demonstrated for the simplest case of a scalar field, holds in NC QFT within this formalism.

Baryogenesis in Cosmological Model with Superstring-Inspired E_6 Unification

We have developed a concept of parallel existence of the ordinary (O) and hidden (H) worlds with a superstring-inspired E_6 unification, broken at the early stage of the Universe into SO(10) X U(1) - in the O-world, and SU(6)' X SU(2)' - in the H-world. As a result, we have obtained in the hidden world the low energy symmetry group G'_SM X SU(2)'_θ, instead of the Standard Model group G_SM. The additional non-Abelian SU(2)'_θgroup with massless gauge fields, "thetons", is responsible for the dark energy. We present a baryogenesis mechanism with the B-L asymmetry produced by the conversion of ordinary leptons into particles of the hidden sector.

Covariant star product on symplectic and Poisson spacetime manifolds

A covariant Poisson bracket and an associated covariant star product in the sense of deformation quantization are defined on the algebra of tensor-valued differential forms on a symplectic manifold, as a generalization of similar structures that were recently defined on the algebra of (scalar-valued) differential forms. A covariant star product of arbitrary smooth tensor fields is obtained as a special case. Finally, we study covariant star products on a more general Poisson manifold with a linear connection, first for smooth functions and then for smooth tensor fields of any type. Some observations on possible applications of the covariant star products to gravity and gauge theory are made.

Light-Like Noncommutativity, Light-Front Quantization and New Light on UV/IR Mixing

We revisit the problem of quantizing field theories on noncommutative Moyal spacetime with \emph{light-like} noncommutativity. To tackle the issues arising from noncommuting and hence nonlocal time, we argue that for this case light-front quantization procedure should be employed. In this appropriate quantization scheme we perform the non-planar loop analysis for the light-like noncommutative field theories. One of the important and peculiar features of light-front quantization is that the UV cutoff of the light-cone Hamiltonian manifests itself as an IR cutoff for the light-cone momentum, $p^+$. Due to this feature, the naive results of covariant quantization for the light-like case allude to the absence of the UV/IR mixing in the light-front quantization. However, by a careful analysis of non-planar loop integrals we show that this is not the case and the UV/IR mixing persists. In addition, we argue in favour of the perturbative unitarity of light-like noncommutative field theories in the light-front quantization scheme.

Massless Chiral Supermultiplets of Higher Spins and the $θ$-Twistor

Recently N. Berkovits, motivated by the supertwistor description of ${\cal N}=4 D=4$ super Yang-Mills, considered the generalization of the ${\cal N}=1 D=4$ $θ$-twistor construction to D=10 and applied it for a compact covariant description of ${\cal N}=1 D=10$ super Yang-Mills. This supports the relevance of the $θ$-twistor as a supersymmetric twistor alternative to the well-known supertwistor. The minimal breaking of superconformal symmetry is an inherent property of the $θ$-twistor received from its fermionic components, described by a Grassmannian vector instead of a Grassmannian scalar in the supertwistor. The $θ$-twistor description of the ${\cal N}=1 D=4$ massless chiral supermultiplets $(S, S + 1/2)$ with spins $S=0,1/2,1,3/2,2,...$ is considered here. The description permits to restore the auxiliary $F$ fields of the chiral supermultiplets absent in the supertwistor approach. The proposed formalism is naturally generalized to ${\cal N}=4 D=4 $ and can be used for an off-shell description of the corresponding super Yang-Mills theory.

Noncommutative gauge theory using covariant star product defined between Lie-valued differential forms

We develop an internal gauge theory using a covariant star product. The space-time is a symplectic manifold endowed only with torsion but no curvature. It is shown that, in order to assure the restrictions imposed by the associativity property of the star product, the torsion of the space-time has to be covariant constant. An illustrative example is given and it is concluded that in this case the conditions necessary to define a covariant star product on a symplectic manifold completely determine its connection.

Solution of the Stochastic Langevin Equations for Clustering of Particles in Turbulent Flows in Terms of Wiener Path Integral

We propose to take advantage of using the Wiener path integrals as the formal solution for the joint probability densities of coupled Langevin equations describing particles suspended in a fluid under the effect of viscous and random forces. Our obtained formal solution, giving the expression for the Lyapunov exponent, i) will provide the description of all the features and the behaviour of such a system, e.g. the aggregation phenomenon recently studied in the literature using appropriate approximations, ii) can be used to determine the occurrence and the nature of the aggregation - non-aggregation phase transition which we have shown for the one-dimensional case and iii) allows the use of a variety of approximative methods appropriate for the physical conditions of the problem such as instanton solutions in the WKB approximation in the aggregation phase for the one-dimensional case as presented in this paper. The use of instanton approximation gives the same result for the Lyapunov exponent in the aggregation phase, previously obtained by other authors using a different approximative method. The case of non-aggregation is also considered in a certain approximation using the general path integral expression for the one-dimensional case.

Astrophysical Implications of the Superstring-Inspired E_6 Unification and Shadow Theta-Particles

We have developed a concept of parallel existence of the ordinary (O) and mirror (M), or shadow (Sh) worlds. E_6 unification, inspired by superstring theory, restores the broken mirror parity at the scale ~ 10^18 GeV. With the aim to explain the tiny cosmological constant, we consider the breakings: E_6 -> SO(10) X U(1)_Z - in the O-world, and E'_6 -> SU(6)' X SU(2)'_θ- in the Sh-world. We assume the existence of shadow θ-particles and the low energy symmetry group SU(3)'_C X SU(2)'_L X SU(2)'_θX U(1)'_Y in the shadow world, instead of the Standard Model. The additional non-Abelian SU(2)'_θgroup with massless gauge fields, "thetons", has a macroscopic confinement radius 1/Λ'_θ. The assumption that Λ'_θ\approx 2.3 X 10^-3 eV explains the tiny cosmological constant given by recent astrophysical measurements. Searching for the Dark Matter (DM), it is possible to observe and study various signals of theta-particles.

Can Seiberg-Witten Map Bypass Noncommutative Gauge Theory No-Go Theorem?

There are strong restrictions on the possible representations and in general on the matter content of gauge theories formulated on noncommutative Moyal spaces, termed as noncommutative gauge theory no-go theorem. According to the no-go theorem \cite{no-go}, matter fields in the noncommutative U(1) gauge theory can only have $\pm 1$ or zero charges and for a generic noncommutative $\prod_{i=1}^n U(N_i)$ gauge theory matter fields can be charged under at most two of the $U(N_i)$ gauge group factors. On the other hand, it has been argued in the literature that, since a noncommutative U(N) gauge theory can be mapped to an ordinary U(N) gauge theory via the Seiberg-Witten map, seemingly it can bypass the no-go theorem. In this note we show that the Seiberg-Witten map \cite{SW} can only be consistently defined and used for the gauge theories which respect the no-go theorem. We discuss the implications of these arguments for the particle physics model building on noncommutative space.

Cosmological Constant in a Model with Superstring-Inspired E_6 Unification and Shadow Theta-Particles

We have developed a concept of parallel existence of the ordinary (O) and mirror (M), or shadow (Sh) worlds. In the first part of the paper we consider a mirror world with broken mirror parity and the breaking $E_6\to SU(3)^3$ in both worlds. We show that in this case the evolutions of coupling constants in the O- and M-worlds are not identical, having different parameters for similar evolutions. $E_6$ unification, inspired by superstring theory, restores the broken mirror parity at the scale $\sim 10^{18}$ GeV. With the aim to explain the tiny cosmological constant, in the second part we consider the breakings: $E_6 \to SO(10)\times U(1)_Z$ -- in the O-world, and $E'_6 \to SU(6)'\times SU(2)'_θ$ -- in the Sh-world. We assume the existence of shadow $θ$-particles and the low energy symmetry group $SU(3)'_C\times SU(2)'_L\times SU(2)'_θ\times U(1)'_Y$ in the shadow world, instead of the Standard Model. The additional non-Abelian $SU(2)'_θ$ group with massless gauge fields, "theton", has a macroscopic confinement radius $1/Λ'_θ$. The assumption that $Λ'_θ\approx 2.3\cdot 10^{-3}$ eV explains the tiny cosmological constant given by recent astrophysical measurements. In this way the present work opens the possibility to specify a grand unification group, such as $E_6$, from Cosmology.

A Realization of the Cohen-Glashow Very Special Relativity

We show that the Cohen-Glashow Very Special Relativity (VSR) theory [1] can be realized as the part of the Poincaré symmetry preserved on a noncommutative Moyal plane with light-like noncommutativity. Moreover, we show that the three subgroups relevant to the Cohen-Glashow VSR can also be realized in the noncommutative space-time setting. For all these three cases the noncommutativity parameter $θ^{μν}$ should be light-like ($θ^{μν}θ_{μν}=0$). A fixed constant noncommutativity parameter respects the T(2) subgroup of Lorentz, while for the E(2) and SIM(2) cases the form of noncommutativity among the coordinates should be of linear (Lie algebra) and quadratic (quantum group) type, respectively. We discuss some physical implications of this realization of the Cohen-Glashow VSR.

An Arena for Model Building in the Cohen-Glashow Very Special Relativity

The Cohen-Glashow Very Special Relativity (VSR) algebra [arXiv:hep-ph/0601236] is defined as the part of the Lorentz algebra which upon addition of CP or T invariance enhances to the full Lorentz group, plus the space-time translations. We show that noncommutative space-time, in particular noncommutative Moyal plane, with light-like noncommutativity provides a robust mathematical setting for quantum field theories which are VSR invariant and hence set the stage for building VSR invariant particle physics models. In our setting the VSR invariant theories are specified with a single deformation parameter, the noncommutativity scale Λ_{NC}. Preliminary analysis with the available data leads to Λ_{NC}\gtrsim 1-10 TeV. This note is prepared for the Proceedings of the G27 Mathematical Physics Conference, Yerevan 2008, and is based on arXiv:0806.3699[hep-th].

Noncommutative Quantum Field Theory: A Confrontation of Symmetries

The concept of a noncommutative field is formulated based on the interplay between twisted Poincaré symmetry and residual symmetry of the Lorentz group. Various general dynamical results supporting this construction, such as the light-wedge causality condition and the integrability condition for Tomonaga-Schwinger equation, are presented. Based on this analysis, the claim of the identity between commutative QFT and noncommutative QFT with twisted Poincaré symmetry is refuted.

Analyticity and Forward Dispersion Relations in Noncommutative Quantum Field Theory

We derive the analytical properties of the elastic forward scattering amplitude of two scalar particles from the axioms of the noncommutative quantum field theory. For the case of only space-space noncommutativity, i.e. $θ_{0i}=0$, we prove the dispersion relation which is similar to the one in commutative quantum field theory. The proof in this case is based on the existence of the analog of the usual microcausality condition and uses the Lehmann-Symanzik-Zimmermann (LSZ) or equivalently the Bogoliubov-Medvedev-Polivanov (BMP) reduction formalisms. The existence of the latter formalisms is also shown. We remark on the general noncommutative case, $θ_{0i}\neq0$, as well as on the nonforward scattering amplitude and mention their peculiarities.

Noncommutative Standard Model: Model Building

A noncommutative version of the usual electro-weak theory is constructed. We discuss how to overcome the two major problems: 1) although we can have noncommutative U(n) (which we denote by $U_{\star}(n)$) gauge theory we cannot have noncommutative SU(n) and 2) the charges in noncommutative QED are quantized to just $0, \pm 1$. We show how the problem with charge quantization, as well as with the gauge group, can be resolved by taking $U_{\star}(3)\times U_{\star}(2)\times U_{\star}(1)$ gauge group and reducing the extra U(1) factors in an appropriate way. Then we proceed with building the noncommutative version of the standard model by specifying the proper representations for the entire particle content of the theory, the gauge bosons, the fermions and Higgs. We also present the full action for the noncommutative Standard Model (NCSM). In addition, among several peculiar features of our model, we address the {\it inherent} CP violation and new neutrino interactions.
