Gravitational instability in partially ionized plasmas: A two-fluid approach

We propose a new two-fluid model for a partially ionized magnetoplasma under gravity, where electrons and neutrals are treated as a single fluid, and singly charged positive ions are a separate fluid. We observe that the classical result of gravitational instability (also known as Rayleigh-Taylor instability) in fully ionized plasmas is significantly modified by the influence of ion-neutral collisions (with frequency $ν_{\rm{in}}$) and transverse wave numbers ($k_x$ and $k_y$). The instability growth rate can be enhanced or decreased depending on the values of the ratios $κ\equiv k_x/k_y$ and $f\equivν_{\rm{in}}/Ω_{\rm{ci}}$, where $Ω_{\rm{ci}}$ is the ion-cyclotron frequency. We also estimate the growth rates relevant to the ionospheric E-region and solar atmosphere, noting that such growth rates can be maximized for $κ,~f\ll1$, or for $κ>1$ and $f\sim0.64$, and minimized for $f\gg1$ irrespective of the value of $κ$. Furthermore, the timescale of instability ranges from $1$ minute to $2$ minutes in the solar atmosphere, while in the E region, it ranges from $1$ minute to $80$ minutes. The latter can be a satisfactory result for the reported lifetime of solar prominence threads.

Drift ion-acoustic waves in a nonuniform rotating magnetoplasma with two-temperature superthermal electrons

The theory of low-frequency (in comparison with the ion cyclotron frequency), long wavelength, electrostatic drift ion-acoustic waves (IAWs) is studied in a nonuniform rotating magnetoplasma with two temperature superthermal electrons. In the linear limit, the coupling of IAWs and drift waves by the density inhomogeneity is shown to produce a new wave mode which typically depends on the density gradient, the rotational frequency and the spectral indexes of superthermal electrons. In the nonlinear regime, an evolution equation for the drift IAWs is derived by the dispersion approach, and using the Jacobi elliptic function expansion technique its exact solitary and periodic wave solutions (namely, cnoidal and dnoidal) are also obtained. The properties of these solutions are numerically examined and it is found that they are significantly modified by the effects of the background density gradient, the superthermality of electrons and the Coriolis force associated with the rotational motion of ions.

Internal Gravity Waves in the Earth's Ionosphere

The theory of low-frequency internal gravity waves (IGWs) is readdressed in the stable stratified weakly ionized Earth's ionosphere. The formation of dipolar vortex structures and their dynamical evolution, as well as, the emergence of chaos in the wave-wave interactions are studied both in presence and absence of the Pedersen conductivity. The latter is shown to inhibit the formation of solitary vortices and the onset of chaos.

Nonlinear evolution of internal gravity waves in the Earth's ionosphere: Analytical and numerical approach

The nonlinear propagation of internal gravity waves in the weakly ionized, incompressible Earth's ionosphere is studied using the fluid theory approach. Previous theory in the literature is advanced by the effects of the terrestrial inhomogeneous magnetic field embedded in weakly ionized ionospheric layers ranging in altitude from about $50$ to $500$ km. It is shown that the ionospheric conducting fluids can support the formation of solitary dipolar vortices (or modons). Both analytical and numerical solutions of the latter are obtained and analyzed. It is found that in absence of the Pedersen conductivity, different vortex structures with different space localization can be formed which can move with the supersonic velocity without any energy loss. However, its presence can cause the amplitude of the solitary vortices to decay with time and the vortex structure can completely disappear owing to the energy loss. Such energy loss can be delayed, i.e., the vortex structure can prevail for relatively a longer time if the nonlinear effects associated with either the stream function or the density variation become significantly higher than the dissipation due to the Pedersen conductivity. The main characteristic dynamic parameters are also defined which are in good correlation with the existing experimental data.

Generation of wakefields and electromagnetic solitons in relativistic degenerate plasmas

The nonlinear interaction of intense linearly polarized electromagnetic waves (EMWs) with longitudinal electron density perturbations is revisited in relativistic degenerate plasmas. The nonlinear dynamics of the EMWs and the longitudinal field, driven by the EMW ponderomotive force, is governed by a coupled set of nonlinear partial differential equations. A numerical simulation of these coupled equations reveals that the generation of wakefields is possible in weakly relativistic degenerate plasmas with $R_0\equiv p_F/mc\ll1$ and $v_g/c\sim1$, where $p_F$ is the Fermi momentum, $m$ is the mass of electrons, $c$ is the speed of light in vacuum, and $v_g$ is the EMW group velocity. However, when the ratio $v_g/c$ is reduced to $\sim0.1$, the wakefield generation is suppressed, instead the longitudinal fields get localized to form soliton-like structures. On the other hand, in the regimes of moderate $(R_0\lesssim1)$ or strong relativistic degeneracy $(R_0>1)$ with $v_g/c\sim0.1$, only the EM solitons can be formed.

Stability and evolution of electromagnetic solitons in relativistic degenerate laser plasmas

The dynamical behaviors of electromagnetic (EM) solitons formed due to nonlinear interaction of linearly polarized intense laser light and relativistic degenerate plasmas are studied. In the slow motion approximation of relativistic dynamics, the evolution of weakly nonlinear EM envelope is described by the generalized nonlinear Schr{ö}dinger (GNLS) equation with local and nonlocal nonlinearities. Using the Vakhitov-Kolokolov criteria, the stability of an EM soliton solution of the GNLS equation is studied. Different stable and unstable regions are demonstrated with the effects of soliton velocity, soliton eigenfrequency, as well as the degeneracy parameter $R=p_{Fe}/m_ec$, where $p_{Fe}$ is the Fermi momentum and $m_e$ the electron mass, and $c$ is the speed of light in vacuum. It is found that the stability region shifts to an unstable one and is significantly reduced as one enters from the regimes of weakly relativistic $(R\ll1)$ to ultrarelativistic $(R\gg1)$ degeneracy of electrons. The analytically predicted results are in good agreement with the simulation results of the GNLS equation. It is shown that the standing EM soliton solutions are stable. However, the moving solitons can be stable or unstable depending on the values of soliton velocity, the eigenfrequency or the degeneracy parameter. The latter with strong degeneracy $(R>1)$ can eventually lead to soliton collapse.

Synchronization in networks of coupled hyperchaotic CO$_2$ lasers

A non-autonomous dynamical system is proposed to study the synchronization in networks of mutually coupled optically modulated hyperchaotic CO$_2$ lasers. By the method of master stability function (MSF) it is shown that the stable synchronous state can be reached for both the ring of diffusively coupled (RDC) and star-coupled (SC) networks of at most $24$ nodes or oscillators. A numerical simulation of the coupled $24$ hyperchaotic CO$_2$ lasers is also performed to show that the corresponding synchronization error $\lesssim10^{-6}$. Furthermore, the chimera states of the networks are found to coexist in some intervals of time and the coupling strengths where the networks are not synchronized, implying that the synchronization occurs only in some specific ranges of values of the coupling strengths.

Elliptically polarized electromagnetic waves in a magnetized quantum electron-positron plasma with effects of exchange-correlation

The dispersion properties of elliptically polarized electromagnetic (EM) waves in a magnetized electron-positron-pair (EP-pair) plasma are studied with the effects of particle dispersion associated with the Bohm potential, the Fermi degenerate pressure, and the exchange-correlation force. Two possible modes of the extraordinary or X wave, modified by these quantum effects, are identified and their propagation characteristics are investigated numerically. It is shown that the upper-hybrid frequency, and the cutoff and resonance frequencies are no longer constants but are dispersive due to these quantum effects. It is found that the particle dispersion and the exchange-correlation force can have different dominating roles on each other depending on whether the X waves are of short or long wavelengths (in comparison with the Fermi Debye length). The present investigation should be useful for understanding the collective behaviors of EP plasma oscillations and the propagation of extraordinary waves in magnetized dense EP-pair plasmas.

Modulation and nonlinear evolution of multi-dimensional Langmuir wave envelopes in a relativistic plasma

The modulational instability (MI) and the evolution of weakly nonlinear two-dimensional (2D) Langmuir wave (LW) packets are studied in an unmagnetized collisionless plasma with weakly relativistic electron flow. By using a 2D self-consistent relativistic fluid model and employing the standard multiple-scale technique, a coupled set of Davey-Stewartson (DS)-like equations is derived which governs the slow modulation and the evolution of LW packets in relativistic plasmas. It is found that the relativistic effects favor the instability of LW envelopes in the kθ plane, where k is the wave number and θ the angle of modulation. It is also found that as the electron thermal velocity or θ increases, the growth rate of MI increases with cutoffs at higher wave numbers of modulation. Furthermore, in the nonlinear evolution of the DS-like equations, it is seen that with an effect of the relativistic flow, a Gaussian wave beam collapses in a finite time, and the collapse can be arrested when the effect of the thermal pressure or the relativistic flow is slightly relaxed. The present results may be useful to the MI and the formation of localized LW envelopes in cosmic plasmas with a relativistic flow of electrons.

Nonlinear Landau damping of wave envelopes in a quantum plasma

The nonlinear theory of Landau damping of electrostatic wave envelopes (WEs) is revisited in a quantum electron-positron (EP) pair plasma. Starting from a Wigner-Moyal equation coupled to the Poisson equation and applying the multiple scale technique, we derive a nonlinear Schr{ö}dinger (NLS) equation which governs the evolution of electrostatic WEs. It is shown that the coefficients of the NLS equation, including the nonlocal nonlinear term, which appears due to the resonant particles having group velocity of the WEs, are significantly modified by the particle dispersion. The effects of the quantum parameter $H$ (the ratio of the plasmon energy to the thermal energy densities), associated with the particle dispersion, are examined on the Landau damping rate of carrier waves, as well as on the modulational instability of WEs. It is found that the Landau damping rate and the decay rate of the solitary wave amplitude are greatly reduced compared to their classical values $(H=0)$.

Dust-acoustic solitary waves and shocks in strongly coupled quantum plasmas

We investigate the propagation characteristics of electrostatic dust-acoustic (DA) solitary waves and shocks in a strongly coupled dusty plasma consisting of intertialess electrons and ions, and strongly coupled inertial charged dust particles. A generalized viscoelastic hydrodynamic model with the effects of electrostatic dust pressure associated with the strong coupling of dust particles, and a quantum hydrodynamic model with the effects of quantum forces associated with the Bohm potential and the exchange-correlation potential for electrons and ions are considered. Both the linear and weakly nonlinear theory of DA waves are studied by the derivation and analysis of dispersion relations as well as Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) and KdV-Burgers (KdVB)-like equations. It is shown that in the kinetic regime ($ωτ_m\gg1$, where $ω$ is the wave frequency and $τ_m$ is the viscoelastic relaxtation time), the amplitude of the DA solitary waves decays slowly with time with the effect of a small amount of dust viscosity. However, the DA shock-like perturbations can be excited in the hydrodynamic regime with $ωτ_m\ll1$. The analytical and numerical solutions of the KdV and KdVB equations are also presented and analyzed with the system parameters.

Landau damping of Gardner solitons in a dusty bi-ion plasma

The effects of linear Landau damping on the nonlinear propagation of dust-acoustic solitary waves (DASWs) are studied in a collisionless unmagnetized dusty plasma with two species of positive ions. The extremely massive, micron-seized, cold and negatively charged dust particles are described by fluid equations, whereas the two species of positive ions, namely the cold (heavy) and hot (light) ions are described by the kinetic Vlasov equations. Following Ott and Sudan [Phys. Fluids {\bf 12}, 2388 (1969)], and by considering lower and higher-order perturbations, the evolution of DASWs with Landau damping is shown to be governed by Korteweg-de Vries (KdV), modified KdV (mKdV) or Gardner (KdV-mKdV)-like equations. The properties of the phase velocity and the Landau damping rate of DASWs are studied for different values of the ratios of the temperatures $(σ)$ and the number densities $(μ)$ of hot and cold ions as well the cold to hot ion mass ratio $m$. The distinctive features of the decay rates of the amplitudes of the KdV, mKdV and Gardner solitons with a small effect of Landau damping are also studied in different parameter regimes. It is found that the Gardner soliton points to lower wave amplitudes than the KdV and mKdV solitons. The results may be useful for understanding the localization of solitary pulses and associated wave damping (collisionless) in laboratory and space plasmas (e.g., the F-ring of Saturn) in which the number density of free electrons is much smaller than that of ions and the heavy, micron seized dust grains are highly charged.

Modulation of ion-acoustic waves in a nonextensive plasma with two-temperature electrons

We study the amplitude modulation of ion-acoustic wave (IAW) packets in an unmagnetized electron-ion plasma with two-temperature (cool and hot) electrons in the context of the Tsallis' nonextensive statistics. Using the multiple-scale technique, a nonlinear Schr{ö}dinger (NLS) equation is derived which governs the dynamics of modulated wave packets. It is shown that in nonextensive plasmas, the IAW envelope is always stable for long-wavelength modes $(k\rightarrow0)$ and unstable for short-wavelengths with $k \gtrsim1$. However, the envelope can be unstable at an intermediate scale of perturbations with $0<k<1$. Thus, the modulated IAW packets can propagate in the form of bright envelope solitons or rogons (at small- and medium scale perturbations) as well as dark envelope solitons (at large scale). The stable and unstable regions are obtained for different values of temperature and density ratios as well as the nonextensive parameters $q_c$ and $q_h$ for cool and hot electrons. It is found that the more (less) the population of superthermal cool (hot) electrons, the smaller is the growth rate of instability with cutoffs at smaller wave numbers of modulation.

preprint2015arXiv

Nonlinear Landau damping and modulation of electrostatic waves in a nonextensive electron-positron-pair plasma

The nonlinear theory of amplitude modulation of electrostatic wave envelopes in a collisionless electron-positron (EP) pair plasma is studied by using a set of Vlasov-Poisson equations in the context of Tsallis' $q$-nonextensive statistics. In particular, the previous linear theory of Langmuir oscillations in EP plasmas [Phys. Rev. E {\bf87}, 053112 (2013)] is rectified and modified. Applying the multiple scale technique (MST), it is shown that the evolution of electrostatic wave envelopes is governed by a nonlinear Schr{ö}dinger (NLS) equation with a nonlocal nonlinear term $\propto {\cal{P}}\int|ϕ(ξ',τ)|^2dξ'ϕ/(ξ-ξ') $ [where ${\cal P}$ denotes the Cauchy principal value, $ϕ$ is the small-amplitude electrostatic (complex) potential, and $ξ$ and $τ$ are the stretched coordinates in MST] which appears due to the wave-particle resonance. It is found that a subregion $1/3<q\lesssim3/5$ of superextensivity $(q<1)$ exists where the carrier wave frequency can turn over with the group velocity going to zero and then to negative values. The effects of the nonlocal nonlinear term and the nonextensive parameter $q$ are examined on the modulational instability (MI) of wave envelopes as well as on the solitary wave solution of the NLS equation. It is found that the modulated wave packet is always unstable (nonlinear Landau damping) due to the nonlocal nonlinearity in the NLS equation. Furthermore, the effect of the nonlinear Landau damping is to slow down the amplitude of the wave envelope, and the corresponding decay rate can be faster the larger is the number of superthermal particles in pair plasmas.

Dust-acoustic solitary waves in a magnetized dusty plasma with nonthermal electrons and trapped ions

The nonlinear propagation of electrostatic dust-acoustic (DA) waves in a magnetized dusty plasma consisting of negatively charged mobile dusts, nonthermal fast electrons and trapped ions with vortex-like distribution is studied. Using the reductive perturbation technique, a Korteweg-de Vries (KdV)-like equation is derived which governs the dynamics of the small-amplitude solitary waves in a magnetized dusty nonthermal plasma. It is found that due to the dust thermal pressure, there exists a critical value $(β_c)$ of the nothermal parameter $β~(>1)$, denoting the percentage of energetic electrons, below which the DA solitary waves cease to propagate. The soliton solution (travelling wave) of the KdV-like equation is obtained, and is shown to be only of the rarefactive type. The properties of the solitons are analyzed numerically with the system parameters. It is also seen that the effect of the static magnetic field (which only modifies the soliton width) becomes significant when the dust gyrofrequency is smaller than one-tenth of the dust plasma frequency. Furthermore, the amplitude of the soliton is found to increase (decrease) when the ratio of the free to trapped ion temperatures $(σ)$ is positive (negative). The effects of the system parameters including the obliqueness of propagation $(l_z)$ and $σ$ on the dynamics of the DA solitons are also discussed numerically, and it is found that the soliton structures can withstand perturbations and turbulence during a considerable time. The results should be useful for understanding the nonlinear propagation of DA solitary waves in laboratory and space plasmas (e.g., Earth's magnetosphere, auroral region, heliospheric environments etc.).

Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (KP) Burgers equation in dusty negative ion plasmas: Evolution of dust-ion acoustic shocks

We study the nonlinear propagation of dust-ion acoustic (DIA) solitary waves in an unmagnetized dusty plasma which consists of electrons, both positive and negative ions and negatively charged immobile dust grains. Starting from a set of hydrodynamic equations with the ion thermal pressures and ion kinematic viscosities included, and using a standard reductive perturbation method, the Kadomtsev-Petviashivili Burgers (KPB) equation is derived, which governs the evolution of DIA shocks. A stationary solution of the KPB equation is obtained and its properties are analysed with different plasma number densities, ion temperatures and masses. It is shown that a transition from shocks with negative potential to positive one occurs depending on the negative ion concentration in the plasma and the obliqueness of propagation of DIA waves.

Landau damping effects on dust-acoustic solitary waves in a dusty negative-ion plasma

The nonlinear theory of dust-acoustic waves (DAWs) with Landau damping is studied in an unmagnetized dusty negative-ion plasma in the extreme conditions when the free electrons are absent. The cold massive charged dusts are described by fluid equations, whereas the two-species of ions (positive and negative) are described by the kinetic Vlasov equations. A Korteweg de-Vries (KdV) equation with Landau damping, governing the dynamics of weakly nonlinear and weakly dispersive DAWs, is derived following Ott and Sudan [Phys. Fluids {\bf 12}, 2388 (1969)]. It is shown that for some typical laboratory and space plasmas, the Landau damping (and the nonlinear) effects are more pronounced than the finite Debye length (dispersive) effects for which the KdV soliton theory is not applicable to DAWs in dusty pair-ion plasmas. The properties of the linear phase velocity, solitary wave amplitudes (in presence and absence of the Landau damping) as well as the Landau damping rate are studied with the effects of the positive ion to dust density ratio $(μ_{pd})$ as well as the ratios of positive to negative ion temperatures $(σ)$ and masses $(m)$.

Modulation of drift-wave envelopes in a nonuniform quantum magnetoplasma

We study the amplitude modulation of low-frequency, long-wavelength electrostatic drift-wave envelopes in a nonuniform quantum magnetoplasma consisting of cold ions and degenerate electrons. The effects of tunneling associated with the quantum Bohm potential and the Fermi pressure for nonrelativistic degenerate electrons, as well as the equilibrium density and magnetic field inhomogeneities are taken into account. Starting from a set of quantum magnetohydrodynamic (QMHD) equations, we derive a nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLSE) that governs the dynamics of the modulated quantum drift-wave packets. The NLSE is used to study the modulational instability (MI) of a Stoke's wave train to a small plane wave perturbation. It is shown that the quantum tunneling effect as well as the scale length of inhomogeneity play crucial roles for the MI of the drift-wave packets. Thus, the latter can propagate in the form of bright and dark envelope solitons or as drift-wave rogons in degenerate dense magnetoplasmas.

Multidimensional ion-acoustic solitary waves and shocks in quantum plasmas

The nonlinear theory of two-dimensional ion-acoustic (IA) solitary waves and shocks (SWS) is revisited in a dissipative quantum plasma. The effects of dispersion, caused by the charge separation of electrons and ions and the quantum force associated with the Bohm potential for degenerate electrons, as well as, the dissipation due to the ion kinematic viscosity are considered. Using the reductive perturbation technique, a Kadomtsev-Petviashvili Burgers (KPB)-type equation, which governs the evolution of small-amplitude SWS in quantum plasmas, is derived, and its different solutions are obtained and analyzed. It is shown that the KPB equation can admit either compressive or rarefactive SWS according to when $H\lessgtr2/3$, or the particle number density satisfies $n_0\gtrless 1.3\times10^{31}$ cm$^{-3}$, where $H$ is the ratio of the electron plasmon energy to the Fermi energy densities. Furthermore, the properties of large-amplitude stationary shocks are studied numerically in the case when the wave dispersion due to charge separation is negligible. It is also shown that a transition from monotonic to oscillatory shocks occurs by the effects of the quantum parameter $H$.

Oblique propagation of dust ion-acoustic solitary waves in a magnetized dusty pair-ion plasma

We investigate the propagation characteristics of electrostatic waves in a magnetized pair-ion plasma with immobile charged dusts. It is shown that obliquely propagating (OP) low-frequency (in comparison with the negative-ion cyclotron frequency) long-wavelength "slow" and "fast" modes can propagate, respectively, as dust ion-acoustic (DIA) and dust ion-cyclotron (DIC)-like waves. The properties of these modes are studied with the effects of obliqueness of propagation $(θ)$, the static magnetic field, the ratios of the negative to positive ion masses $(m)$ and temperatures $(T)$ as well as the dust to negative-ion number density ratio $(δ)$. Using the standard reductive perturbation technique, we derive a Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation which governs the evolution of small-amplitude OP DIA waves. It is found that the KdV equation admits only rarefactive solitons in plasmas with $m$ well below its critical value $m_c~(\gg1)$ which typically depends on $T$ and $δ$. It is shown that the nonlinear coefficient of the KdV equation vanishes at $m=m_c$, i.e., for plasmas with much heavier negative ions, and the evolution of the DIA waves is then described by a modified KdV (mKdV) equation. The latter is shown to have only compressive soliton solution. The properties of both the KdV and mKdV solitons are studied with the system parameters as above, and possible applications of our results to laboratory and space plasmas are briefly discussed.

Electrostatic solitary waves in dusty pair-ion plasmas

The propagation of electrostatic waves in an unmagnetized collisionless pair-ion plasma with immobile positively charged dusts is studied for both large- and small-amplitude perturbations. Using a two-fluid model for pair-ions, it is shown that there appear two linear ion modes, namely the "fast" and "slow" waves in dusty pair-ion plasmas. The properties of these wave modes are studied with different mass $(m)$ and temperature $(T)$ ratios of negative to positive ions, as well as the effects of immobile charged dusts $(δ)$. For large-amplitude waves, the pseudopotential approach is performed, whereas the standard reductive perturbation technique (RPT) is used to study the small-amplitude Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) solitons. The profiles of the pseudopotential, the large amplitude solitons as well as the dynamical evolution of KdV solitons are numerically studied with the system parameters as above. It is found that the pair-ion plasmas with positively charged dusts support the propagation of solitary waves (SWs) with only the negative potential. The results may be useful for the excitation of SWs in laboratory dusty pair-ion plasmas, electron-free industrial plasmas as well as for observation in space plasmas where electron density is negligibly small compared to that of negative ions.

Amplitude modulated drift wave packets in a nonuniform magnetoplasma

We consider the amplitude modulation of low-frequency, long wavelength electrostatic drift wave packets in a nonuniform magnetoplasma with the effects of equilibrium density, electron temperature and magnetic field inhomogeneities. The dynamics of the modulated drift wave packet is governed by a nonlinear Schrödinger equation. The latter is used to study the modulational instability of a Stoke's wave train to a small longitudinal perturbation. It is shown that the drift wave packet is stable (unstable) against the modulation when the drift wave number lies in $0< k < 1/\sqrt{2}$ $(1/\sqrt{2}<k<1)$. Thus, the modulated drift wave packet can propagate in the form of bright and dark envelope solitons or as a drift wave rogon.

Characteristics of ion-acoustic solitary wave in a laboratory dusty plasma under the influence of ion-beam

We study the influence of ion beam and charged dust impurity on the propagation of dust ion-acoustic (DIA) solitary wave (SW) in an unmagnetized plasma consisting of Boltzmann distributed electrons, positive ions, positive ion beam and negatively charged immobile dusts in a double plasma device. On interacting with an ion beam, the solitary wave is bifurcated into a compressive fast and a rarefactive slow beam mode, and appears along with the primary wave. However, there exists a critical velocity of the beam beyond which the amplitude of the fast solitary wave starts diminishing and rarefactive slow beam mode propagates with growing amplitude. Whereas, the presence of charged dust impurity in the plasma reduces this critical beam velocity and a substantial modification in the phase velocity of the slow beam mode is observed with increasing dust density. Furthermore, the nonlinear wave velocity (Mach number) as well as the width of the compressive solitons are measured for different beam velocity and dust density, and are compared with those obtained from the K-dV equation. The experimental results are found in a well agreement with the theoretical predictions.

Ion-acoustic solitary waves and shocks in a collisional dusty negative ion plasma

We study the effects of ion-dust collisions and ion kinematic viscosities on the linear ion-acoustic instability as well as the nonlinear propagation of small amplitude solitary waves and shocks (SWS) in a negative ion plasma with immobile charged dusts. {The existence of two linear ion modes, namely the `fast' and `slow' waves is shown, and their properties are analyzed in the collisional negative ion plasma.} {Using the standard reductive perturbation technique, we derive a modified Korteweg-de Vries-Burger (KdVB) equation which describes the evolution of small amplitude SWS.} {The profiles of the latter are numerically examined with parameters relevant for laboratory and space plasmas where charged dusts may be positively or negatively charged.} It is found that negative ion plasmas containing positively charged dusts support the propagation of SWS with negative potential. However, the perturbations with both positive and negative potentials may exist when dusts are negatively charged. The results may be useful for the excitation of SWS in laboratory negative ion plasmas as well as for observation in space plasmas where charged dusts may be positively or negatively charged.

Rossby rogons in atmosphere and in the solar photosphere

The generation of Rossby rogue waves (Rossby rogons), as well as the excitation of bright and dark Rossby envelpe solitons are demonstrated on the basis of the modulational instability (MI) of a coherent Rossby wave packet. The evolution of an amplitude modulated Rossby wave packet is governed by one-dimensional (1D) nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLSE). The latter is used to study the amplitude modulation of Rossby wave packets for fluids in Earth's atmosphere and in the solar photosphere. It is found that an ampitude modulated Rossby wave packet becomes stable (unstable) against quasi-stationary, long wavelength (in comparision with the Rossby wave length) perturbations, when the carrier Rossby wave number satisfies $k^2 < 1/2$ or $\sqrt{2}+1<k^2<3$ ($k^2 >3$ or $1/2<k^2<\sqrt{2}+1$). It is also shown that a Rossby rogon or a bright Rossby envelope soliton may be excited in the shallow water approximation for the Rossby waves in solar photosphere. However, the excitation of small or large scale perturbations may be possible for magnetized plasmas in the ionosphereic $E-$layer.

Stability and evolution of wave packets in strongly coupled degenerate plasmas

We study the nonlinear propagation of electrostatic wave packets in a collisional plasma composed of strongly coupled ions and relativistically degenerate electrons. The equilibrium of ions is maintained by an effective temperature associated with their strong coupling, whereas that of electrons is provided by the relativistic degeneracy pressure. Using a multiple scale technique, a (3+1)-dimensional coupled set of nonlinear Schrödinger-like equations with nonlocal nonlinearity is derived from a generalized viscoelastic hydrodynamic model. These coupled equations, which govern the dynamics of wave packets, are used to study the oblique modulational instability of a Stoke's wave train to a small plane wave perturbation. We show that the wave packets, though stable to the parallel modulation, becomes unstable against oblique modulations. In contrast to the long-wavelength carrier modes, the wave packets with short-wavelengths are shown to be stable in the weakly relativistic case, whereas they can be stable or unstable in the ultra-relativistic limit. Numerical simulation of the coupled equations reveals that a steady state solution of the wave amplitude exists together with the formation of a localized structure in (2+1) dimensions. However, in the (3+1)-dimensional evolution, a Gaussian wave beam self-focuses after interaction and blows up in a finite time. The latter is, however, arrested when the dispersion predominates over the nonlinearities. This occurs when the Coulomb coupling strength is higher or a choice of obliqueness of modulation, or a wavelength of excitation is different. Possible application of our results to the interior as well as in an outer mantle of white dwarfs are discussed.

Electromagnetic surface modes in a magnetized quantum electron-hole plasma

The propagation of surface electromagnetic waves along a uniform magnetic field is studied in a quantum electron-hole semiconductor plasma. A new forward propagating mode, not reported before, is found by the effect of quantum tunneling, which otherwise does not exist. In the classical limit ($\hbar\rightarrow 0$) one of the low-frequency modes is found similar to an experimentally observed one in $n$-type InSb at room temperature. The surface modes are shown to be significantly modified in the case of high-conductivity semiconductor plasmas where electrons and holes may be degenerate. The effects of the external magnetic field and the quantum tunneling on the surface wave modes are discussed.

Large amplitude solitary waves in ion-beam plasmas with charged dust impurities

The nonlinear propagation of large amplitude dust ion-acoustic (DIA) solitary waves (SWs) in an ion-beam plasma with stationary charged dusts is investigated. For typical plasma parameters relevant for experiments [J. Plasma Phys. \textbf{60}, 69 (1998)], when the beam speed is larger than the DIA speed ($v_{b0}\gtrsim1.7c_s$), three stable waves, namely the "fast" and "slow" ion-beam modes and the plasma DIA wave are shown to exist. These modes can propagate as SWs in the beam plasmas. However, in the other regime ($c_s<v_{b0}<1.7c_s$), one of the beam modes when coupled to the DIA mode may become unstable. The SWs with positive (negative) potential may exist when the difference of the nonlinear wave speed ($M$) and the beam speed is such that $1.2\lesssim M-v_{b0}\lesssim1.6$ ($M-v_{b0}\gtrsim1.6$). Furthermore, for real density perturbations, the wave potential $(>0)$ is found to be limited by a critical value which typically depends on $M$, $v_{b0}$ as well as the ion/beam temperature. The conditions for the existence of DIA solitons are obtained and their properties are analyzed numerically in terms of the system parameters. While the system supports both the compressive and rarefactive large amplitude SWs, the small amplitude solitons exist only of the compressive type. The theoretical results may be useful for observation of soliton excitations in laboratory ion-beam driven plasmas as well as in space plasmas where the charged dusts play as impurities.

Modulational instability and nonlinear evolution of two-dimensional electrostatic wave packets in ultra-relativistic degenerate dense plasmas

We consider the nonlinear propagation of electrostatic wave packets in an ultra-relativistic (UR) degenerate dense electron-ion plasma, whose dynamics is governed by the nonlocal two-dimensional nonlinear Schr{ö}dinger-like equations. The coupled set of equations are then used to study the modulational instability (MI) of a uniform wave train to an infinitesimal perturbation of multi-dimensional form. The condition for the MI is obtained, and it is shown that the nondimensional parameter, $β\proptoλ_C n_0^{1/3}$ (where $λ_C$ is the reduced Compton wavelength and $n_0$ is the particle number density), associated with the UR pressure of degenerate electrons, shifts the stable (unstable) regions at $n_{0}\sim10^{30}$ cm$^{-3}$ to unstable (stable) ones at higher densities, i.e. $n_{0}\gtrsim7\times10^{33}$. It is also found that {the} higher the values of $n_{0}$, the lower is the growth rate of MI with cut-offs at lower wave numbers of modulation. Furthermore, the dynamical evolution of the wave packets is studied numerically. We show that either they disperse away or they blowup in a finite time, when the wave action is below or above the threshold. The results could be useful for understanding the properties of modulated wave packets and their multi-dimensional evolution in UR degenerate dense plasmas, such as those in the interior of white dwarfs {and/or} pre-Supernova stars.

Spatiotemporal evolution in a (2+1)-dimensional chemotaxis model

Simulations are performed to investigate the nonlinear dynamics of a (2+1)-dimensional chemotaxis model of Keller-Segel (KS) type with a logistic growth term. Because of its ability to display auto-aggregation, the KS model has been widely used to simulate self-organization in many biological systems. We show that the corresponding dynamics may lead to a steady-state, divergence in a finite time as well as the formation of spatiotemporal irregular patterns. The latter, in particular, appear to be chaotic in part of the range of bounded solutions, as demonstrated by the analysis of wavelet power spectra. Steady states are achieved with sufficiently large values of the chemotactic coefficient $(χ)$ and/or with growth rates $r$ below a critical value $r_c$. For $r > r_c$, the solutions of the differential equations of the model diverge in a finite time. We also report on the pattern formation regime for different values of $χ$, $r$ and the diffusion coefficient $D$.

Synchronization of spatiotemporal semiconductor lasers and its application in color image encryption

Optical chaos is a topic of current research characterized by high-dimensional nonlinearity which is attributed to the delay-induced dynamics, high bandwidth and easy modular implementation of optical feedback. In light of these facts, which adds enough confusion and diffusion properties for secure communications, we explore the synchronization phenomena in spatiotemporal semiconductor laser systems. The novel system is used in a two-phase colored image encryption process. The high-dimensional chaotic attractor generated by the system produces a completely randomized chaotic time series, which is ideal in the secure encoding of messages. The scheme thus illustrated is a two-phase encryption method, which provides sufficiently high confusion and diffusion properties of chaotic cryptosystem employed with unique data sets of processed chaotic sequences. In this novel method of cryptography, the chaotic phase masks are represented as images using the chaotic sequences as the elements of the image. The scheme drastically permutes the positions of the picture elements. The next additional layer of security further alters the statistical information of the original image to a great extent along the three-color planes. The intermediate results during encryption demonstrate the infeasibility for an unauthorized user to decipher the cipher image. Exhaustive statistical tests conducted validate that the scheme is robust against noise and resistant to common attacks due to the double shield of encryption and the infinite dimensionality of the relevant system of partial differential equations.

Upper-hybrid wave driven Alfvenic turbulence in magnetized dusty plasmas

The nonlinear dynamics of coupled electrostatic upper-hybrid (UH) and Alfven waves (AWs) is revisited in a magnetized electron-ion plasma with charged dust impurities. A pair of nonlinear equations that describe the interaction of UH wave envelopes (including the relativistic electron mass increase) and the density as well as the compressional magnetic field perturbations associated with the AWs is solved numerically to show that many coherent solitary patterns can be excited and saturated due to modulational instability of unstable UH waves. The evolution of these solitary patterns is also shown to appear in the states of spatiotemporal coherence, temporal as well as spatiotemporal chaos due to collision and fusion among the patterns in stochastic motion. Furthermore, these spatiotemporal features are demonstrated by the analysis of wavelet power spectra. It is found that a redistribution of wave energy takes place to higher harmonic modes with small wavelengths which, in turn, results into the onset of Alfvenic turbulence in dusty magnetoplasmas. Such a scenario can occur in the vicinity of Saturn's magnetosphere as many electrostatic solitary structures have been observed there by the Cassini spacecraft.

Circularly polarized modes in magnetized spin plasmas

The influence of the intrinsic spin of electrons on the propagation of circularly polarized waves in a magnetized plasma is considered. New eigenmodes are identified, one of which propagates below the electron cyclotron frequency, one above the spin-precession frequency, and another close to the spin-precession frequency.\ The latter corresponds to the spin modes in ferromagnets under certain conditions. In the nonrelativistic motion of electrons, the spin effects become noticeable even when the external magnetic field $B_{0}$ is below the quantum critical\ magnetic field strength, i.e., $B_{0}<$ $B_{Q} =4.4138\times10^{9}\, \mathrm{T}$ and the electron density satisfies $n_{0} \gg n_{c}\simeq10^{32}$m$^{-3}$. The importance of electron spin (paramagnetic) resonance (ESR) for plasma diagnostics is discussed.

Double-layer shocks in a magnetized quantum plasma

The formation of small but finite amplitude electrostatic shocks in the propagation of quantum ion-acoustic waves (QIAWs) obliquely to an external magnetic field is reported in a quantum electron-positron-ion (e-p-i) plasma. Such shocks are seen to have double-layer (DL) structures composed of the compressive and accompanying rarefactive slow-wave fronts. Existence of such DL shocks depends critically on the quantum coupling parameter $H$ associated with the Bohm potential and the positron to electron density ratio $δ$. The profiles may, however, steepen initially and reach a steady state with a number of solitary waves in front of the shocks. Such novel DL shocks could be a good candidate for particle acceleration in intense laser-solid density plasma interaction experiments as well as in compact astrophysical objects, e.g., magnetized white dwarfs.

Generation of wakefields by whistlers in spin quantum magnetoplasmas

The excitation of electrostatic wakefields in a magnetized spin quantum plasma by the classical as well as the spin-induced ponderomotive force (CPF and SPF, respectively) due to whistler waves is reported. The nonlinear dynamics of the whistlers and the wakefields is shown to be governed by a coupled set of nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) and driven Boussinesq-like equations. It is found that the quantum force associated with the Bohm potential introduces two characteristic length scales, which lead to the excitation of multiple wakefields in a strongly magnetized dense plasma (with a typical magnetic field strength $B_{0}\gtrsim10^{9}$ T and particle density $n_{0}\gtrsim10^{36}$ m$^{-3}$), where the SPF strongly dominates over the CPF. In other regimes, namely $B_{0}\lesssim10^{8}$ T and $\ n_{0}\lesssim10^{35}$ m$^{-3}$, where the SPF is comparable to the CPF, a plasma wakefield can also be excited self-consistently with one characteristic length scale. Numerical results reveal that the wakefield amplitude is enhanced by the quantum tunneling effect, however it is lowered by the external magnetic field. Under appropriate conditions, the wakefields can maintain high coherence over multiple plasma wavelengths and thereby accelerate electrons to extremely high energies. The results could be useful for particle acceleration at short scales, i.e. at nano- and micrometer scales, in magnetized dense plasmas where the driver is the whistler wave instead of a laser or a particle beam.

Ion-beam driven dust ion-acoustic solitary waves in dusty plasmas

The nonlinear propagation of small but finite amplitude dust ion-acoustic waves (DIAWs) in an ion-beam driven plasma with Boltzmannian electrons, positive ions and stationary charged dust grains, is studied by using the standard reductive perturbation technique (RPT). It is shown that there exist two critical values $(γ_{c1}$ and $γ_{c2})$ of ion-beam to ion phase speed ratio $(γ)$, beyond which the beam generated solitons are not possible. The effects of the parameters, namely $γ$, the ratio of the ion-beam to plasma ion density $(μ_{i})$, the dust to ion density ratio $(μ_{d})$ as well as the ion-beam to plasma ion mass ratio $(μ)$ on both the amplitude and width of the stationary DIAWs are analyzed numerically, and applications of the results to laboratory ion-beam as well as space plasmas (e.g., auroral plasmas) are explained.

Localized whistlers in magnetized spin quantum plasmas

The nonlinear propagation of electromagnetic (EM) electron-cyclotron waves (whistlers) along an external magnetic field, and their modulation by electrostatic small but finite amplitude ion-acoustic density perturbations are investigated in a uniform quantum plasma with intrinsic spin of electrons. The effects of the quantum force associated with the Bohm potential and the combined effects of the classical as well as the spin-induced ponderomotive forces (CPF and SPF respectively) are taken into consideration. The latter modify the local plasma density in a self-consistent manner. The coupled modes of wave propagation is shown to be governed by a modified set of nonlinear Schrödinger-Boussinesq-like equations which admit exact solutions in form of stationary localized envelopes. Numerical simulation reveals the existence of large-scale density fluctuations that are self-consistently created by the localized whistlers in a strongly magnetized high density plasma. The conditions for the modulational instability (MI) and the value of its growth rate are obtained. Possible applications of our results, e.g., in strongly magnetized dense plasmas and in the next generation laser-solid density plasma interaction experiments are discussed.

Modulational instability of ion-acoustic wave packets in quantum pair-ion plasmas

Amplitude modulation of quantum ion-acoustic waves (QIAWs) in a quantum electron-pair-ion plasma is studied. It is shown that the quantum coupling parameter $H$ (being the ratio of the plasmonic energy density to the Fermi energy) is ultimate responsible for the modulational stability of QIAW packets, without which the wave becomes modulational unstable. New regimes for the modulational stability (MS) and instability (MI) are obtained in terms of $H$ and the positive to negative ion density ratio $β$. The growth rate of MI is obtained, the maximum value of which increases with $β$ and decreases with $H$. The results could be important for understanding the origin of modulated QIAW packets in the environments of dense astrophysical objects, laboratory negative ion plasmas as well as for the next generation laser solid density plasma experiments.

Nonlinear wave-wave interactions in quantum plasmas

Wave-wave interaction in plasmas is a topic of important research since the 16th century. The formation of Langmuir solitons through the coupling of high-frequency (hf) Langmuir and low-frequency (lf) ion-acoustic waves, is one of the most interesting features in the context of turbulence in modern plasma physics. Moreover, quantum plasmas, which are ubiquitous in ultrasmall electronic devices, micromechanical systems as well as in dense astrophysical environments are a topic of current research. In the light of notable interests in such quantum plasmas, we present here a theoretical investigation on the nonlinear interaction of quantum Langmuir waves (QLWs) and quantum ion-acoustic waves (QIAWs), which are governed by the one-dimensional quantum Zakharov equations (QZEs). It is shown that a transition to spatiotemporal chaos (STC) occurs when the length scale of excitation of linear modes is larger than that of the most unstable ones. Such length scale is, however, to be larger (compared to the classical one) in presence of the quantum tunneling effect. The latter induces strong QIAW emission leading to the occurrence of collision and fusion among the patterns at an earlier time than the classical case. Moreover, numerical simulation of the QZEs reveals that many solitary patterns can be excited and saturated through the modulational instability (MI) of unstable harmonic modes. In a longer time, these solitons are seen to appear in the state of STC due to strong QIAW emission as well as by the collision and fusion in stochastic motion. The energy in the system is thus strongly redistributed, which may switch on the onset of Langmuir turbulence in quantum plasmas.

Spatiotemporal chaos and the dynamics of coupled Langmuir and ion-acoustic waves in plasmas

A simulation study is performed to investigate the dynamics of coupled Langmuir waves (LWs) and ion-acoustic waves (IAWs) in an unmagnetized plasma. The effects of dispersion due to charge separation and the density nonlinearity associated with the IAWs, are considered to modify the properties of Langmuir solitons, as well as to model the dynamics of relatively large amplitude wave envelopes. It is found that the Langmuir wave electric field, indeed, increases by the effect of ion-wave nonlinearity (IWN). Use of a low-dimensional model, based on three Fourier modes shows that a transition to temporal chaos is possible, when the length scale of the linearly excited modes is larger than that of the most unstable ones. The chaotic behaviors of the unstable modes are identified by the analysis of Lyapunov exponent spectra. The space-time evolution of the coupled LWs and IAWs shows that the IWN can cause the excitation of many unstable harmonic modes, and can lead to strong IAW emission. This occurs when the initial wave field is relatively large or the length scale of IAWs is larger than the soliton characteristic size. Numerical simulation also reveals that many solitary patterns can be excited and generated through the modulational instability (MI) of unstable harmonic modes. As time goes on, these solitons are seen to appear in the spatially partial coherence (SPC) state due to the free ion-acoustic radiation as well as in the state of spatiotemporal chaos (STC) due to collision and fusion in the stochastic motion. The latter results the redistribution of initial wave energy into a few modes with small length scales, which may lead to the onset of Langmuir turbulence in laboratory as well as space plasmas.

Spin contribution to the ponderomotive force in a plasma

The concept of a ponderomotive force due to the intrinsic spin of electrons is developed. An expression containing both the classical as well as the spin-induced ponderomotive force is derived. The results are used to demonstrate that an electromagnetic pulse can induce a spin-polarized plasma. Furthermore, it is shown that for certain parameters, the nonlinear back-reaction on the electromagnetic pulse from the spin magnetization current can be larger than that from the classical free current. Suitable parameter values for a direct test of this effect are presented.

Temporal dynamics in the one-dimensional quantum Zakharov equations for plasmas

The temporal dynamics of the quantum Zakharov equations (QZEs) in one spatial dimension, which describes the nonlinear interaction of quantum Langmuir waves (QLWs) and quantum ion-acoustic waves (QIAWs) is revisited by considering their solution as a superposition of three interacting wave modes in Fourier space. Previous results in the literature are modified and rectified. Periodic, chaotic as well as hyperchaotic behaviors of the Fourier-mode amplitudes are identified by the analysis of Lyapunov exponent spectra and the power spectrum. The periodic route to chaos is explained through an one-parameter bifurcation analysis. The system is shown to be destabilized via a supercritical Hopf-bifurcation. The adiabatic limits of the fully spatio-temporal and reduced systems are compared from the viewpoint of integrability properties.

The ponderomotive force due to the intrinsic spin in extended fluid and kinetic models

In this paper we calculate the contribution to the ponderomotive force in a plasma from the electron spin using a recently developed model. The spin-fluid model used in the present paper contains spin-velocity correlations, in contrast to previous models used for the same purpose. Is its then found that previous terms for the spin-ponderomotive force are recovered, but also that additional terms appear. Furthermore, the results due to the spin-velocity correlations are confirmed using the spin-kinetic theory. The significance of our results is discussed.
