Radiative neutron capture cross section of $^{242}$Pu measured at n_TOF-EAR1 in the unresolved resonance region up to 600 keV

Accurate neutron capture cross sections are essential for the design and operation of fast reactors using MOX fuels. For $^{242}$Pu, the Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA) recommends 8--12% accuracy in the fast energy region (2--500 keV), compared to the current uncertainty of 35%. Moreover, integral experiments and previous measurements suggest the evaluated $^{242}$Pu(n,$γ$) cross section is overestimated, particularly in the JEFF-3.3 library, which shows a 14% overestimation between 1 keV and 1 MeV. Recent measurements from LANSCE reported a 20--30% reduction in the 1--40 keV range relative to evaluations. To solve these discrepancies, the $^{242}$Pu(n,$γ$) cross section was measured from 1 to 600 keV at CERN n_TOF-EAR1 facility using a 95(4) mg $^{242}$Pu target, enriched to 99.959%. Gamma rays from neutron capture were detected with an array of C$_6$D$_6$ scintillators and a novel application of the Pulse Height Weighting Technique was employed. The resulting cross section presents a systematic uncertainty between 8 and 12%, reducing the current uncertainties of 35\% and achieving the accuracy requested by the NEA. Analysis using FITACS produced average resonance parameters, consistent with the analysis of the resolved resonance region. Our data align well with Wisshak and Kaeppeler, and are 10--14\% lower than JEFF-3.3 in the 1--250 keV range, helping to achieve consistency with integral benchmarks. At higher energies, our results are in reasonable agreement with ENDF/B-VIII.1 and JEFF-3.3. In contrast, DANCE results appear to underestimate the cross section by a factor of 2--3 above a few keV.

Angular distribution of $γ$ rays from the p-wave resonance of $^{118}$Sn

The neutron energy-dependent angular distribution of $γ$ rays from $^{117}{\rm Sn}(n,γ)$ reaction was measured with germanium detectors and a pulsed neutron beam. The angular distribution was clearly observed in $γ$-ray emissions with an energy of 9327 keV which corresponds to the transition from a neutron resonance of $^{117}{\rm Sn}+n$ to the ground state of $^{118}{\rm Sn}$. The angular distribution causes an angular-dependent asymmetric resonance shape. An asymmetry $A_{\rm LH}$ was defined as $(N_{\rm L}-N_{\rm H})/(N_{\rm L}+N_{\rm H})$, where $N_{\rm L}$ and $N_{\rm H}$ are integrated values for lower- and higher-energy regions of a neutron resonance, respectively. We found that the $A_{\rm LH}$ has the angular dependence of $(A \cos θ_γ+B)$, where $θ_γ$ is the $γ$-ray emission angle with respect to the incident neutron momentum, with $A=0.394 \pm 0.073$ and $B = 0.118 \pm 0.029$ in the 1.33 eV p-wave resonance.

High accuracy, high resolution 235U(n,f) cross section from n_TOF (CERN) in the thermal to 10 keV energy range

The 235U(n,f) cross section was measured in a wide energy range (25 meV - 170 keV) at the n_TOF facility at CERN, relative to 6Li(n,t) and 10B(n,alpha) standard reactions, with high resolution and accuracy, with a setup based on a stack of six samples and six silicon detectors placed in the neutron beam. In this paper we report on the results in the region between thermal and 10 keV neutron energy. A resonance analysis has been performed up to 200 eV, with the code SAMMY. The resulting fission kernels are compared with the ones extracted on the basis of the resonance parameters of the most recent major evaluated data libraries. A comparison of the n_TOF data with the evaluated cross sections is also performed from thermal to 10 keV neutron energy for the energy-averaged cross section in energy groups of suitably chosen width. A good agreement is found in average between the new results and the latest evaluated data files ENDF-B/VIII and JEFF-3.3, as well as with respect to the IAEA reference files. However, some discrepancies are still present in some specific energy regions. The new dataset here presented, characterized by unprecedented resolution and accuracy, can help improving the evaluations in the Resolved Resonance Region and up to 10 keV, and reduce the uncertainties that affect this region.

The $^{7}$Be(n,p)$^{7}$Li reaction and the Cosmological Lithium Problem: measurement of the cross section in a wide energy range at n_TOF (CERN)

We report on the measurement of the $^{7}$Be($n, p$)$^{7}$Li cross section from thermal to approximately 325 keV neutron energy, performed in the high-flux experimental area (EAR2) of the n_TOF facility at CERN. This reaction plays a key role in the lithium yield of the Big Bang Nucleosynthesis (BBN) for standard cosmology. The only two previous time-of-flight measurements performed on this reaction did not cover the energy window of interest for BBN, and showed a large discrepancy between each other. The measurement was performed with a Si-telescope, and a high-purity sample produced by implantation of a $^{7}$Be ion beam at the ISOLDE facility at CERN. While a significantly higher cross section is found at low-energy, relative to current evaluations, in the region of BBN interest the present results are consistent with the values inferred from the time-reversal $^{7}$Li($p, n$)$^{7}$Be reaction, thus yielding only a relatively minor improvement on the so-called Cosmological Lithium Problem (CLiP). The relevance of these results on the near-threshold neutron production in the p+$^{7}$Li reaction is also discussed.

The CERN n TOF NEAR station for astrophysics- and application-related neutron activation measurements

A new experimental area, the NEAR station, has recently been built at the CERN n TOF facility, at a short distance from the spallation target (1.5 m). The new area, characterized by a neutron beam of very high flux, has been designed with the purpose of performing activation measurements of interest for astrophysics and various applications. The beam is transported from the spallation target to the NEAR station through a hole in the shielding wall of the target, inside which a collimator is inserted. The new area is complemented with a γ-ray spectroscopy laboratory, the GEAR station, equipped with a high efficiency HPGe detector, for the measurement of the activity resulting from irradiation of a sample in the NEAR station. The use of a moderator/filter assembly is envisaged, in order to produce a neutron beam of Maxwellian shape at different thermal energies, necessary for the measurement of Maxwellian Averaged Cross Sections of astrophysical interest. A new fast-cycling activation technique is also being investigated, for measurements of reactions leading to isotopes of very short half life.

Nature of the Dirac gap modulation and surface magnetic interaction in axion antiferromagnetic topological insulator MnBi$_2$Te$_4$

Modification of the gap at the Dirac point (DP) in antiferromagnetic (AFM) axion topological insulator MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ and its electronic and spin structure has been studied by angle- and spin-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) under laser excitation with variation of temperature (9-35~K), light polarization and photon energy. We have distinguished both a large (62-67~meV) and a reduced (15-18~meV) gap at the DP in the ARPES dispersions, which remains open above the Néel temperature ($T_\mathrm{N}=24.5$~K). We propose that the gap above $T_\mathrm{N}$ remains open due to short-range magnetic field generated by chiral spin fluctuations. Spin-resolved ARPES, XMCD and circular dichroism ARPES measurements show a surface ferromagnetic ordering for large-gap sample and significantly reduced effective magnetic moment for the reduced-gap sample. These effects can be associated with a shift of the topological DC state towards the second Mn layer due to structural defects and mechanical disturbance, where it is influenced by a compensated effect of opposite magnetic moments.

Variety of magnetic topological phases in the (MnBi$_2$Te$_4$)(Bi$_2$Te$_3$)$_m$ family

Quantum states of matter combining non-trivial topology and magnetism attract a lot of attention nowadays; the special focus is on magnetic topological insulators (MTIs) featuring quantum anomalous Hall and axion insulator phases. Feasibility of many novel phenomena that \emph{intrinsic} magnetic TIs may host depends crucially on our ability to engineer and efficiently tune their electronic and magnetic structures. Here, using angle- and spin-resolved photoemission spectroscopy along with \emph{ab initio} calculations we report on a large family of intrinsic magnetic TIs in the homologous series of the van der Waals compounds (MnBi$_2$Te$_4$)(Bi$_2$Te$_3$)$_m$ with $m=0, ..., 6$. Magnetic, electronic and, consequently, topological properties of these materials depend strongly on the $m$ value and are thus highly tunable. The antiferromagnetic (AFM) coupling between the neighboring Mn layers strongly weakens on moving from MnBi2Te4 (m=0) to MnBi4Te7 (m=1), changes to ferromagnetic (FM) one in MnBi6Te10 (m=2) and disappears with further increase in m. In this way, the AFM and FM TI states are respectively realized in the $m=0,1$ and $m=2$ cases, while for $m \ge 3$ a novel and hitherto-unknown topologically-nontrivial phase arises, in which below the corresponding critical temperature the magnetizations of the non-interacting 2D ferromagnets, formed by the \MBT\, building blocks, are disordered along the third direction. The variety of intrinsic magnetic TI phases in (MnBi$_2$Te$_4$)(Bi$_2$Te$_3$)$_m$ allows efficient engineering of functional van der Waals heterostructures for topological quantum computation, as well as antiferromagnetic and 2D spintronics.

Experimental setup and procedure for the measurement of the 7Be(n,α)α reaction at n_TOF

The newly built second experimental area EAR2 of the n_TOF spallation neutron source at CERN allows to perform (n, charged particles) experiments on short-lived highly radioactive targets. This paper describes a detection apparatus and the experimental procedure for the determination of the cross-section of the 7Be(n,α) reaction, which represents one of the focal points toward the solution of the cosmological Lithium abundance problem, and whose only measurement, at thermal energy, dates back to 1963. The apparently unsurmountable experimental difficulties stemming from the huge 7Be γ-activity, along with the lack of a suitable neutron beam facility, had so far prevented further measurements. The detection system is subject to considerable radiation damage, but is capable of disentangling the rare reaction signals from the very high background. This newly developed setup could likely be useful also to study other challenging reactions requiring the detectors to be installed directly in the neutron beam.

Precise determination of two-carrier transport properties in the topological insulator TlBiSe$_2$

We report the electric transport study of the three-dimensional topological insulator TlBiSe$_2$. We applied a newly developed analysis procedure and precisely determined two-carrier transport properties. Magnetotransport properties revealed a multicarrier conduction of high- and low-mobility electrons in the bulk, which was in qualitative agreement with angle-resolved photoemission results~[K. Kuroda $et~al.$, Phys. Rev. Lett. $\bm{105}$, 146801 (2010)]. The temperature dependence of the Hall mobility was explained well with the conventional Bloch-Gr{ü}neisen formula and yielded the Debye temperature $\varTheta_{\rm{D}}=113 \pm 14$~K. The results indicate that the scattering of bulk electrons is dominated by acoustic phonons.

Surface Shubnikov-de Hass oscillations and non-zero Berry phases of the topological hole conduction in Tl$_{1-x}$Bi$_{1+x}$Se$_2$

We report the observation of two-dimensional Shubnikov-de Hass (SdH) oscillations in the topological insulator Tl$_{1-x}$Bi$_{1+x}$Se$_2$. Hall effect measurements exhibited electron-hole inversion in samples with bulk insulating properties. The SdH oscillations accompanying the hole conduction yielded a large surface carrier density of $n_{\rm{s}}=5.1 \times10^{12}$/cm$^2$, with the Landau-level fan diagram exhibiting the $π$ Berry phase. These results showed the electron-hole reversibility around the in-gap Dirac point and the hole conduction on the surface Dirac cone without involving the bulk metallic conduction.

Unoccupied topological surface state in Bi$_{2}$Te$_{2}$Se

Bias voltage dependent scattering of the topological surface state is studied by scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy for a clean surface of the topological insulator Bi$_2$Te$_2$Se. A strong warping of constant energy contours in the unoccupied part of the spectrum is found to lead to a spin-selective scattering. The topological surface state persists to higher energies in the unoccupied range far beyond the Dirac point, where it coexists with the bulk conduction band. This finding sheds light on the spin and charge dynamics over the wide energy range and opens a way to designing opto-spintronic devices.

Experimental verification of PbBi$_{2}$Te$_{4}$ as a 3D topological insulator

The first experimental evidence is presented of the topological insulator state in PbBi$_{2}$Te$_{4}$. A single surface Dirac cone is observed by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) with synchrotron radiation. Topological invariants $\mathbb{Z}_2$ are calculated from the {\it ab initio} band structure to be 1; (111). The observed two-dimensional iso-energy contours in the bulk energy gap are found to be the largest among the known three-dimensional topological insulators. This opens a pathway to achieving a sufficiently large spin current density in future spintronic devices.

Observation of a Highly Spin Polarized Topological Surface State in GeBi$_{2}$Te$_{4}$

Spin polarization of a topological surface state for GeBi$_2$Te$_4$, the newly discovered three-dimensional topological insulator, has been studied by means of the state of the art spin- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. It has been revealed that the disorder in the crystal has a minor effect on the surface state spin polarization and it exceeds 75% near the Dirac point in the bulk energy gap region ($\sim$180 meV). This new finding for GeBi$_{2}$Te$_{4}$ promises not only to realize a highly spin polarized surface isolated transport but to add new functionality to its thermoelectric and thermomagnetic properties.

Topological Surface States with Persistent High Spin Polarization across Dirac Point in Bi$_{2}$Te$_{2}$Se and Bi$_{2}$Se$_{2}$Te

Helical spin textures with the marked spin polarizations of topological surface states have been firstly unveiled by the state-of-the-art spin- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy for two promising topological insulators Bi$_2$Te$_2$Se and Bi$_2$Se$_2$Te. The highly spin-polarized natures are found to be persistent across the Dirac point in both compounds. This novel finding paves a pathway to extending their utilization of topological surface state for future spintronic applications.

Two-fold symmetry flattens Dirac cone of surface state at W(110)

The $C_{2v}$ symmetry of the W(110) surface influences strongly the spin-polarized Dirac-cone-like surface state within a spin-orbit-induced symmetry gap. We present a detailed angle-resolved photoemission study with $s$- and $p$-polarized light along three different symmetry lines. The Dirac-cone-like feature appears along $\barΓ\bar{H}$ and $\barΓ\bar{S}$, while it is strongly deformed along $\barΓ\bar{N}$. A two-fold $Σ_{3}$ symmetry of the $d$-type surface state is identified from photoemission experiments using linear polarized light. Our results are well described by model calculations based on an effective Hamiltonian with $C_{2v}$ symmetry including Rashba parameters up to third order. The flattened Dirac cone of the surface state is caused by hybridization with bulk continuum states of $Σ_{1}$ and $Σ_{2}$ symmetry. The spin texture of this state obtained from the model calculations shows a quasi-one dimensional behavior. This finding opens a new avenue in the study of $d$-electron-based persistent spin helix systems and/or weak topological insulators.

Quasiparticle interference on the surface of 3D topological insulator Bi$_{2}$Se$_{3}$ induced by cobalt adatom in the absence of ferromagnetic ordering

Quasiparticle interference induced by cobalt adatoms on the surface of the topological insulator Bi$_{2}$Se$_{3}$ is studied by scanning tunneling microscopy, angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and X-ray magnetic circular dichroism. It is found that Co atoms are selectively adsorbed on top of Se sites and act as strong scatterers at the surface, generating anisotropic standing waves. A long-range magnetic order is found to be absent, and the surface state Dirac cone remains gapless. The anisotropy of the standing wave is ascribed to the heavily warped iso-energy contour of unoccupied states, where the scattering is allowed due to a non-zero out-of-plane spin.

Relocation of the topological surface state of Bi$_{2}$Se$_{3}$ beneath the surface by Ag intercalation

We studied the Ag-intercalated 3D topological insulator Bi$_{2}$Se$_{3}$ by scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, combined with a first principles calculations. We demonstrate that silver atoms deposited on the surface of Bi$_{2}$Se$_{3}$ are intercalated between the quintuple layer (QL) units of the crystal, causing a expansion of the van der Waals gaps and the detachment of topmost QLs from the bulk crystal. This leads to a relocation (in the real space) of the the topological state beneath the detached quintuple layers, accompanied by the emergence of parabolic and "M-shaped" trivial bands localized above the relocated topological states. These novel findings open a pathway to the engineering of Dirac fermions shielded from the ambient contamination and may facilitate the realization of fault-tolerant quantum devices.

Spin-polarized Dirac-cone-like surface state with $d$ character at W(110)

The surface of W(110) exhibits a Dirac-cone-like surface state with $d$ character within a spin-orbit-induced symmetry gap. As a function of wave vector parallel to the surface, it shows nearly massless energy dispersion and a pronounced spin polarization, which is antisymmetric with respect to the Brillouin zone center. In addition, the observed constant energy contours are strongly anisotropic for all energies. This discovery opens new pathways to the study of surface spin-density waves arising from a strong Fermi surface nesting as well as $d$-electron-based topological properties.

Surface Scattering via Bulk Continuum States in the 3D Topological Insulator Bi$_{2}$Se$_{3}$

We have performed scanning tunneling microscopy and differential tunneling conductance ($dI/dV$) mapping for the surface of the three dimensional topological insulator Bi$_{2}$Se$_{3}$. The fast Fourier transformation applied to the $dI/dV$ image shows an electron interference pattern near Dirac node despite the general belief that the backscattering is well suppressed in the bulk energy gap region. The comparison of the present experimental result with theoretical surface and bulk band structures shows that the electron interference occurs through the scattering between the surface states near the Dirac node and the bulk continuum states.

Superdeformation in Asymmetric N$>$Z Nucleus $^{40}$Ar

A rotational band with five $γ$-ray transitions ranging from 2$^{+}$ to 12$^{+}$ states was identified in $^{40}$Ar. This band is linked through $γ$ transitions from the excited 2$^{+}$, 4$^{+}$ and 6$^{+}$ levels to the low-lying states; this determines the excitation energy and the spin-parity of the band. The deduced transition quadrupole moment of 1.45$^{+0.49}_{-0.31} eb$ indicates that the band has a superdeformed shape. The nature of the band is revealed by cranked Hartree--Fock--Bogoliubov calculations and a multiparticle--multihole configuration is assigned to the band.
