Ramified covering maps of singular curves and stability of pulled back bundles

Let $f : X \rightarrow Y$ be a generically smooth nonconstant morphism between irreducible projective curves, defined over an algebraically closed field, which is étale on an open subset of $Y$ that contains both the singular locus of $Y$ and the image, in $Y$, of the singular locus of $X$. We prove that the following statements are equivalent: \begin{enumerate} \item The homomorphism of étale fundamental groups $$f_* : π_1^{\rm et}(X) \rightarrowπ_1^{\rm et}(Y)$$ induced by $f$ is surjective. \item There is no nontrivial étale covering $ϕ: Y' \rightarrow Y$ admitting a morphism $q: X \rightarrow Y'$ such that $ϕ\circ q = f$. \item The fiber product $X\times_Y X$ is connected. \item $\dim H^0(X, f^*f_* {\mathcal O}_X)= 1$. \item ${\mathcal O}_Y \subset f_*{\mathcal O}_X$ is the maximal semistable subsheaf. \item The pullback $f^*E$ of every stable sheaf $E$ on $Y$ is also stable. \end{enumerate}

Connections and genuinely ramified maps of curves

Given a singular connection $D$ on a vector bundle $E$ over an irreducible smooth projective curve $X$, defined over an algebraically closed field, we show that there is a unique maximal subsheaf of $E$ on which $D$ induces a nonsingular connection. Given a generically smooth map $ϕ: Y \rightarrow\ X$ between irreducible smooth projective curves, and a singular connection $(V, D)$ on $Y$, the direct image $ϕ_*V$ has a singular connection. Let $\textbf{R}(ϕ_*{\mathcal O}_Y)$ be the unique maximal subsheaf on which the singular connection on $ϕ_*{\mathcal O}_Y$ -- corresponding to the trivial connection on ${\mathcal O}_Y$ -- induces a nonsingular connection. We prove that the homomorphism of étale fundamental groups $ϕ_*: π_1^{\rm et}(Y, y_0) \rightarrow π_1^{\rm et}(X, ϕ(y_0))$ induced by $ϕ$ is surjective if and only if ${\mathcal O}_X \subset \textbf{R}(ϕ_*{\mathcal O}_Y)$ is the unique maximal semistable subsheaf. When the characteristic of the base field is zero, this homomorphism $ϕ_*$ is surjective if and only if ${\mathcal O}_X = \textbf{R}(ϕ_*{\mathcal O}_Y)$. For any nonsingular connection $D$ on a vector bundle $V$ over $X$, there is a natural map $V\hookrightarrow {\bf R}(ϕ_*ϕ^*V)$. When the characteristic of the base field is zero, we prove that the map $ϕ$ is genuinely ramified if and only if $V ={\bf R}(ϕ_*ϕ^*V)$.

Asymptotic slopes and strong semistability on surfaces

In this article we study asymptotic slopes of strongly semistable vector bundles on a smooth projective surface. A connection between asymptotic slopes and strong restriction theorem of a strongly semistable vector bundle is shown. We also give an equivalent criterion of strong semistability of a vector bundle in terms of its asymptotic slopes under some assumptions on the surface and on the bundle.

Genuinely ramified maps and stability of pulled-back parabolic bundles

Let $f : X \rightarrow Y$ be a genuinely ramified map between irreducible smooth projective curves defined over an algebraically closed field. Let $P$ be a branch data on $Y$ such that $P(y)$ and $B_f(y)$ where $B_f$ is branch data for $f$ are linearly disjoint for every $y \in, Y$. Further assume that either $P$ is tame or $f$ is Galois. Then the pullback, by $f$, of any stable parabolic bundle on $Y$ with respect to $P$ is actually a stable parabolic bundle on $X$ with respect to $f^*P$.

Genuinely ramified maps and stable vector bundles

Let $f : X \rightarrow Y$ be a separable finite surjective map between irreducible normal projective varieties defined over an algebraically closed field, such that the corresponding homomorphism between étale fundamental groups $f_* : π_1^{\rm et}(X)\rightarrowπ_1^{\rm et}(Y)$ is surjective. Fix a polarization on $Y$ and equip $X$ with the pullback, by $f$, of this polarization on $Y$. Given a stable vector bundle $E$ on $X$, we prove that there is a vector bundle $W$ on $Y$ with $f^*W$ isomorphic to $E$ if and only if the direct image $f_*E$ contains a stable vector bundle $F$ such that $$ \frac{{\rm degree}(F)}{{\rm rank}(F)}= \frac{1}{{\rm degree}(f)}\cdot \frac{{\rm degree}(E)}{{\rm rank}(E)} $$ We also prove that $f^*V$ is stable for every stable vector bundle $V$ on $Y$.

Jacobians, Anti-affine groups and torsion points

We give criteria for the Jacobian of a singular curve $X$ with at most ordinary $n$-point singularities to be anti-affine. In particular, for the case of curves with single ordinary double point we exhibit a relation with torsion divisors. If the geometric genus of the singular curve is atleast 3 and the normalization is non-hyperelliptic and non-bielliptic, then except for finitely many cases the Jacobian of $X$ is anti-affine. Furthermore, if the normalization is a general curve of genus atleast 3 then the Jacobian of $X$ is always anti-affine.

Ulrich line bundles on double planes

Consider a smooth complex surface $X$ which is a double cover of the projective plane $\mathbb{P}^2$ branched along a smooth curve of degree $2s$. In this article, we study the geometric conditions which are equivalent to the existence of Ulrich line bundles on $X$ with respect to this double covering. Also, for every $s\geq 1$, we describe the classes of such surfaces which admit Ulrich line bundles and give examples.

Ramified covering maps and stability of pulled back bundles

Let $f:C\rightarrow D$ be a nonconstant separable morphism between irreducible smooth projective curves defined over an algebraically closed field. We say that $f$ is genuinely ramified if ${\mathcal O}_D$ is the maximal semistable subbundle of $f_*{\mathcal O}_C$ (equivalently, the homomorphism of etale fundamental groups is surjective). We prove that the pullback $f^*E\rightarrow C$ is stable for every stable vector bundle $E$ on $D$ if and only if $f$ is genuinely ramified.

A splitting theorem for good complexifications

The purpose of this paper is to produce restrictions on fundamental groups of manifolds admitting good complexifications by proving the following Cheeger-Gromoll type splitting theorem: Any closed manifold $M$ admitting a good complexification has a finite-sheeted regular covering $M_1$ such that $M_1$ admits a fiber bundle structure with base $(S^1)^k$ and fiber $N$ that admits a good complexification and also has zero virtual first Betti number. We give several applications to manifolds of dimension at most 5.

Formal orbifolds and orbifold bundles in positive characteristic

We define formal orbifolds over an algebraically closed field of arbitrary characteristic as curves together with some branch data. Their étale coverings and their fundamental groups are also defined. These fundamental group approximates the fundamental group of an appropriate affine curve. We also define vector bundles on these objects and the category of orbifold bundles on any smooth projective curve. Analogues of various statement about vector bundles which are true in characteristic zero are proved. Some of these are positive characteristic avatar of notions which appear in the second author's work ([Par]) in characteristic zero.

Fundamental group of a geometric invariant theoretic quotient

Let $M$ be an irreducible smooth projective variety, defined over an algebraically closed field, equipped with an action of a connected reductive affine algebraic group $G$, and let ${\mathcal L}$ be a $G$--equivariant very ample line bundle on $M$. Assume that the GIT quotient $M/\!\!/G$ is a nonempty set. We prove that the homomorphism of algebraic fundamental groups $π_1(M)\, \longrightarrow\, π_1(M/\!\!/G)$, induced by the rational map $M\, \longrightarrow\, M/\!\!/G$, is an isomorphism. If $k\,=\, \mathbb C$, then we show that the above rational map $M\, \longrightarrow \, M/\!\!/G$ induces an isomorphism between the topological fundamental groups.

An analogue of the Narasimhan-Seshadri theorem and some applications

We prove an analogue in higher dimensions of the classical Narasimhan-Seshadri theorem for strongly stable vector bundles of degree 0 on a smooth projective variety $X$ with a fixed ample line bundle $Θ$. As applications, over fields of characteristic zero, we give a new proof of the main theorem in a recent paper of Balaji and Kollár and derive an effective version of this theorem; over uncountable fields of positive characteristics, if $G$ is a simple and simply connected algebraic group and the characteristic of the field is bigger than the Coxeter index of $G$, we prove the existence of strongly stable principal $G$ bundles on smooth projective surfaces whose holonomy group is the whole of $G$.
