Constraints from $Λ$ hypernuclei on the $ΛNN$ content of the $Λ$-nucleus potential

A depth of $D_Λ\approx -28$ MeV for the $Λ$-nucleus potential was confirmed in 1988 by studying $Λ$ binding energies deduced from $(π^+,K^+)$ spectra measured across the periodic table. Modern two-body hyperon-nucleon interaction models require additional interaction terms, most likely $ΛNN$ three-body terms, to reproduce $D_Λ$. In this work we apply a suitably constructed $Λ$-nucleus density dependent optical potential to binding energy calculations of observed $1s_Λ$ and $1p_Λ$ states in the mass range $12\leq A\leq 208$. The resulting $ΛNN$ contribution to $D_Λ$, about 14 MeV repulsion at symmetric nuclear matter density $ρ_0=0.17$ fm$^{-3}$, makes $D_Λ$ increasingly repulsive at $ρ\gtrsim 3ρ_0$, leading possibly to little or no $Λ$ hyperon content of neutron-star matter. This suggests in some models a stiff equation of state that may support two solar-mass neutron stars.

Consequences of increased hypertriton binding for $s$-shell $Λ$-hypernuclear systems

Consequences of increasing the binding energy of the hypertriton ground state ${_Λ^3}{\rm H}(J^P={\frac{1}{2}}^+)$ from the emulsion value $B^{\rm EMUL}_Λ({_Λ^3}{\rm H}_{\rm g.s.})$=0.13$\pm$0.05 MeV to the STAR value $B^{\rm STAR}_Λ(^{3}_Λ{\rm H}) = (0.41\pm 0.12 \pm 0.11)$ MeV are studied for $s$-shell hypernuclei within a pionless EFT approach at leading order, constrained by the binding energies of the $0^+$ and $1^+$ ${_Λ^4} {\rm H}$ states. The stochastic variational method is used in bound-state calculations, whereas the inverse analytic continuation in the coupling constant method is used to locate $S$-matrix poles of continuum states. It is found that the $Λnn({\frac{1}{2}}^+)$ resonance becomes broader and less likely to be observed experimentally, whereas the ${_Λ^3}{\rm H}({\frac{3}{2}}^+)$ spin-flip virtual state moves closer to the $Λd$ threshold to become a shallow bound state for specific $ΛN$ interaction strengths. The effect of such a near-threshold ${_Λ^3}{\rm H}({\frac{3}{2}}^+)$ state on femtoscopic studies of $Λ$-deuteron correlations, and its lifetime if bound, are discussed. Increasing $B_Λ({_Λ^3} {\rm H}_{\rm g.s.})$ moderately, up to $\sim$0.5 MeV, hardly affects calculated values of $B_Λ({_Λ^5}{\rm He})$.

$Λ^*$ matter and its stability

We performed calculations of nuclear systems composed solely of $Λ^*$ hyperons, aiming at exploring the possibility of existence of absolutely stable $Λ^*$ matter. We considered $Λ^*$ interaction strengths compatible with the $Λ^*Λ^*$ binding energy $B_{Λ^*Λ^*}$ given by the $\bar{K}N$ interaction model by Yamazaki and Akaishi [1]. We found that the binding energy per $Λ^*$ saturates at values well below 100 MeV for mass number $A\geq120$. The $Λ^*$ matter is thus highly unstable against strong interaction decay.

Antinucleon-nucleus interaction near threshold from the Paris $\bar NN$ potential

A general algorithm for handling the energy dependence of hadron-nucleon amplitudes in the nuclear medium, consistently with their density dependence, has been recently applied to antikaons, eta mesons and pions interacting with nuclei. Here we apply this approach to antiprotons below threshold, analyzing experimental results for antiprotonic atoms across the periodic table. It is also applied to antiproton and antineutron interaction with nuclei up to 400 MeV/c, comparing with elastic scattering and annihilation cross sections. The underlying $\bar pN$ scattering amplitudes are derived from the Paris $\bar NN$ potential, including modifications in the medium. Emphasis is placed on the role of the $P$-wave amplitudes with respect to the repulsive $S$-wave amplitudes.

Few-body calculations of $η$-nuclear quasibound states

We report on precise hyperspherical-basis calculations of $ηNN$ and $ηNNN$ quasibound states, using energy dependent $ηN$ interaction potentials derived from coupled-channel models of the $S_{11}$ $N^{\ast}(1535)$ nucleon resonance. The $ηN$ attraction generated in these models is too weak to generate a two-body bound state. No $ηNN$ bound-state solution was found in our calculations in models where Re $a_{ηN}\lesssim 1$ fm, with $a_{ηN}$ the $ηN$ scattering length, covering thereby the majority of $N^{\ast}(1535)$ resonance models. A near-threshold $ηNNN$ bound-state solution, with $η$ separation energy of less than 1 MeV and width of about 15 MeV, was obtained in the 2005 Green-Wycech model where Re $a_{ηN}\approx 1$ fm. The role of handling self consistently the subthreshold $ηN$ interaction is carefully studied.

In-medium Eta-Nucleon interactions and Eta nuclear bound states

The in-medium Eta-N interaction near and below threshold is constructed from a free-space chirally-inspired meson-baryon coupled-channel model that captures the physics of the N(1535) baryon resonance. Nucleon Pauli blocking and hadron self-energies are accounted for. The resulting energy dependent in-medium interaction is used in self-consistent dynamical calculations of Eta nuclear bound states. Narrow states of width about or less than 2 MeV are found across the periodic table, beginning with A=10, for this in-medium coupled-channel interaction model. The binding energy of the 1s-Eta state increases with A, reaching a value of B(1s-Eta) about 15 MeV. The implications of our self-consistency procedure are discussed with respect to procedures used in other works.

Pion-assisted charmed dibaryon candidate

The Lambda_c(2286)-N system is studied in a chiral constituent quark model and the resulting s-wave interaction is used in separable form within three-body models of the pi-Lambda_c-N system with quantum numbers (C,I,JP)=(+1,3/2,2+). Separable interactions are also used for the dominant p-wave pion-baryon channels dominated by the Delta(1232) and Sigma_c(2520) resonances. Faddeev equations with relativistic kinematics are solved on the real axis to search for bound states and in the complex plane to search for three-body resonances. Some of the models considered generate a very narrow bound state, requiring isospin violation for its strong decay. Other models lead to a narrow resonance (Gamma < 0.4 MeV) for resonance mass below the Sigma_c(2455)-N threshold. This would be the lowest-lying C=+1 dibaryon, with mass estimated approximately as 3370+/-15 MeV.

Testing in-medium $πN$ dynamics on pionic atoms

A general algorithm for handling the energy dependence of meson-nucleon amplitudes in the nuclear medium has been recently applied to antikaons and to eta mesons. Here we test this approach on $πN$ amplitudes in pionic atoms where direct comparison can be made with ample experimental results. Applying this algorithm to a large-scale fit of 100 pionic-atom data points across the periodic table, which also include the `deeply-bound' states in Sn and Pb, reaffirms earlier conclusions on the density-dependent renormalization of the $πN$ threshold isovector amplitude $b_1$, or equivalently the renormalization of the pion decay constant $f_π$ in the nuclear medium.

Eta-nuclear bound states revisited

The strong energy dependence of the s-wave eta-N scattering amplitude at and below threshold, as evident in coupled-channels K-matrix fits and chiral models that incorporate the S11 N*(1535) resonance, is included self-consistently in eta-nuclear bound-state calculations. This approach, applied recently in calculations of kaonic atoms and Kbar-nuclear bound states, is found to impose stronger constraints than ever on the onset of eta-nuclear binding, with a minimum value of Re a_{eta N} approximately 0.9 fm required to accommodate an eta-4He bound state. Binding energies and widths of eta-nuclear states are calculated within several underlying eta-N models for nuclei across the periodic table, including eta-25Mg for which some evidence was proposed in a recent COSY experiment.

Kaonic atoms and in-medium K-N amplitudes II: interplay between theory and phenomenology

A microscopic kaonic-atom optical potential $V^{(1)}_{K^-}$ is constructed, using the Ikeda-Hyodo-Weise NLO chiral $K^-N$ subthreshold scattering amplitudes constrained by the kaonic hydrogen SIDDHARTA measurement, and incorporating Pauli correlations within the Waas-Rho-Weise generalization of the Ericson-Ericson multiple-scattering approach. Good fits to kaonic atom data over the entire periodic table require additionally sizable $K^-NN$--motivated absorptive and dispersive phenomenological terms, in agreement with our former analysis based on a post-SIDDHARTA in-medium chirally-inspired NLO separable model by Cieplý and Smejkal. Such terms are included by introducing a phenomenological potential $V^{(2)}_{K^-}$ and coupling it self consistently to $V^{(1)}_{K^-}$. Properties of resulting kaonic atom potentials are discussed with special attention paid to the role of $K^-$-nuclear absorption and to the extraction of density-dependent amplitudes representing $K^-$ multi-nucleon processes.

First observation of the hyper superheavy hydrogen 6ΛH

Three candidate events of the neutron-rich hypernucleus 6ΛH were uniquely identified in the FINUDA experiment at DAΦNE, Frascati, by observing π+ mesons from the (K-stop,π+) production reaction on 6Li targets, in coincidence with π-mesons from 6ΛH \rightarrow 6He+π- weak decay. Details of the experiment and the analysis of its data are reported, leading to an estimate of (2.9\pm2.0)\cdot10-6/K- stop for the 6ΛH production rate times the two-body π- weak decay branching ratio. The 6ΛH binding energy with respect to 5H + Λ was determined jointly from production and decay to be BΛ = (4.0 \pm 1.1) MeV, assuming that 5H is unbound with respect to 3H + 2n by 1.7 MeV. The binding energy determined from production is higher, in each one of the three events, than that determined from decay, with a difference of (0.98 \pm 0.74) MeV here assigned to the 0+g.s. \rightarrow 1+ excitation. The consequences of this assignment to Λ hypernuclear dynamics are briefly discussed.

Kaonic atoms and in-medium $K^-N$ amplitudes

Recent work on the connection between in-medium subthreshold $K^-N$ amplitudes and kaonic atom potentials is updated by using a next to leading order chirally motivated coupled channel separable interaction model that reproduces $\bar KN$ observables at low energies, including the very recent SIDDHARTA results for the atomic $K^-$-hydrogen $1s$ level shift and width. The corresponding $K^-$-nucleus potential is evaluated self-consistently within a single-nucleon approach and is critically reviewed with respect to empirical features of phenomenological optical potentials. The need to supplement the single-nucleon based approach with multi-nucleon interactions is demonstrated by showing that additional empirical absorptive and dispersive terms, beyond the reach of chirally motivated $K^-$-nucleus potentials, are required in order to achieve good agreement with the bulk of the data on kaonic atoms.

Realistic calculations of Kbar-N-N, Kbar-N-N-N, and Kbar-Kbar-N-N quasibound states

Binding energies and widths of three-body KbarNN, and of four-body KbarNNN and KbarKbarNN nuclear quasibound states are calculated in the hyperspherical basis, using realistic NN potentials and subthreshold energy dependent chiral KbarN interactions. Results of previous K^-pp calculations are reproduced and an upper bound is placed on the binding energy of a K^-d quasibound state. A self consistent handling of energy dependence is found to restrain binding, keeping the calculated four-body ground-state binding energies to relatively low values of about 30 MeV. The lightest strangeness -2 particle-stable Kbar nuclear cluster is most probably KbarKbarNN. The calculated Kbar N -> pi Y conversion widths range from approximately 30 MeV for the KbarNNN ground state to approximately 80 MeV for the KbarKbarNN ground state.

Search for the neutron-rich hypernucleus 9ΛHe

Search for the neutron-rich hypernucleus 9LHe is reported by the FINUDA experiment at DAFNE, INFN-LNF, studying (pi+, pi-) pairs in coincidence from the K-stop + 9Be --> 9LHe + pi+ production reaction followed by 9LHe --> 9Li + pi- weak decay. An upper limit of the production rate of 9LHe undergoing this two-body pi- decay is determined to be (2.3 +/- 1.9) 10-6/K-stop at 90% confidence level.

Chirally motivated K^- nuclear potentials

In-medium subthreshold KbarN scattering amplitudes calculated within a chirally motivated meson-baryon coupled-channel model are used self consistently to confront K^- atom data across the periodic table. Substantially deeper K^- nuclear potentials are obtained compared to the shallow potentials derived in some approaches from threshold amplitudes, with Re V_{chiral} = -(85+/-5) MeV at nuclear matter density. When KbarNN contributions are incorporated phenomenologically, a very deep K^- nuclear potential results, Re V_{chiral+phen.} = -(180+/-5) MeV, in agreement with density dependent potentials obtained in purely phenomenological fits to the data. Self consistent dynamical calculations of K^- nuclear quasibound states are reported and discussed.

Comment on "Five-Body Cluster Structure of the Double-Lambda Hypernucleus Lambda-Lambda-11Be"

Hiyama et al. [PRL 104 (2010) 212502] have recently reported on a pioneering five-body alpha-alpha-n-Lambda-Lambda cluster-model calculation of Lambda-Lambda-11Be in order to confront a possible interpretation of the KEK-E373 HIDA event. Unfortunately, a six-body alpha-alpha-n-n-Lambda-Lambda calculation of Lambda-Lambda-12Be to confront another possible interpretation is beyond reach at present. Using experimental B-Lambda values with small corrections based on recently determined Lambda-N spin-dependent interaction parameters, we obtain binding-energy shell-model estimates for both Lambda-Lambda hypernuclei, concluding that neither Lambda-Lambda-11Be nor Lambda-Lambda-12Be provide satisfactory interpretation of the HIDA event. The shell model approach is tested by reproducing the measured double-Lambda binding energy of the double-Lambda hypernucleus Lambda-Lambda-13B.

Consistency of Lambda-Lambda hypernuclear events

Highlights of Lambda-Lambda emulsion events are briefly reviewed. Given three accepted events, shell-model predictions based on p-shell Lambda hypernuclear spectroscopic studies are shown to reproduce the Lambda-Lambda (LL) binding energies of LL10Be and LL13B in terms of the LL binding energy of LL6He. Predictions for other species offer judgement on several alternative assignments of the LL13B KEK-E176 event, and on the assignments LL11Be and LL12Be suggested recently for the KEK-E373 HIDA event. The predictions of the shell model, spanning a wide range of A values, are compared with those of cluster models, where the latter are available.

Constraints on the threshold K- nuclear potential from FINUDA (stopped K-, pi-) hypernuclear spectra

1s(Lambda) hypernuclear formation rates in stopped K- reactions on several p-shell targets are derived from hypernuclear formation spectra measured recently by the FINUDA Collaboration and are compared with calculated 1s(Lambda) formation rates based on a KbarN coupled channels chiral model. The calculated rates are about 15% of the derived rates, depending weakly on the depth of the threshold K- nuclear potential. The A dependence of the calculated rates is in fair agreement with that of the derived rates, showing a slight preference for a deep density dependent K- nuclear potential of depth (150-200) MeV at nuclear matter density over a shallow potential of depth about 50 MeV. These new features originate from a substantial energy and density dependence found for the in-medium subthreshold (K- n --> pi- Lambda) branching ratio that serves as input to the K- capture at rest calculations.

Evidence for 6ΛH

Evidence for the neutron-rich hypernucleus 6ΛH is presented from the FINUDA experiment at DAΦNE, Frascati, studying (π+, π-) pairs in coincidence from the K- +6Li \rightarrow 6 H+π+ production reaction followed by 6ΛH \rightarrow 6He + π- weak decay. The production rate of 6ΛH undergoing this two-body π- decay is determined to be (2.9\pm2.0)\cdot10-6/K-. Its binding energy, evaluated jointly from production and decay, is BΛ(6ΛH) = (4.0\pm1.1) MeV with respect to 5H+Λ. A systematic difference of (0.98 \pm 0.74) MeV between BΛ values derived separately from decay and from production is tentatively assigned to the 6ΛH 0+g.s. \rightarrow 1+ excitation.

K^- nuclear potentials from in-medium chirally motivated models

A self consistent scheme for constructing K^- nuclear optical potentials from subthreshold in-medium Kbar-N s-wave scattering amplitudes is presented and applied to analysis of kaonic atoms data and to calculations of K^- quasibound nuclear states. The amplitudes are taken from a chirally motivated meson-baryon coupled-channel model, both at the Tomozawa-Weinberg leading order and at the next to leading order. Typical kaonic atoms potentials are characterized by a real part -Re V(K^-;chiral)=(85+/-5) MeV at nuclear matter density, in contrast to half this depth obtained in some derivations based on in-medium Kbar-N threshold amplitudes. The moderate agreement with data is much improved by adding complex rho- and rho^2-dependent phenomenological terms, found to be dominated by rho^2 contributions that could represent Kbar-NN -> YN absorption and dispersion, outside the scope of meson-baryon chiral models. Depths of the real potentials are then near 180 MeV. The effects of p-wave interactions are studied and found secondary to those of the dominant s-wave contributions. The in-medium dynamics of the coupled-channel model is discussed and systematic studies of K^- quasibound nuclear states are presented.

Nuclear medium effects from hadronic atoms

The state of the art in the study of pionic, kaonic and Sigmionic atoms, along with the in-medium nuclear interactions deduced for these hadrons, is reviewed. A special emphasis is placed on recent developments in antikaon-nuclear physics, where a strongly attractive density dependent antikaon-nuclear potential of order 150-200 MeV in nuclear matter emerges by fitting K^- atom data. This has interesting repercussions on antikaon quasibound nuclear states, on the composition of strange hadronic matter and on kaon condensation in self bound hadronic systems.

Shell-model predictions for double-Lambda hypernuclei

It is shown how the recent shell-model determination of Lambda-N spin dependent interaction terms in Lambda hypernuclei allows for a reliable deduction of Lambda-Lambda separation energies in Lambda-Lambda hypernuclei across the nuclear p shell. Comparison is made with the available data, highlighting 11(Lambda-Lambda)Be and 12(Lambda-Lambda)Be which have been suggested as possible candidates for the KEK-E373 Hida event.

Lambda-hypernuclear production in stopped (K-,pion) reactions reexamined

DWIA calculations of Lambda-hypernuclear production rates in stopped K- reactions on several p-shell targets used recently in experiments by the FINUDA Collaboration are reported. Chirally motivated K- + N -> pion + Lambda in-medium transition amplitudes are employed and the sensitivity of the calculated rates to the initial K- atomic wavefunctions and final pion distorted waves is studied. The calculated rates are compared with measured rates, wherever available, confirming earlier observations that (i) the calculated rates are generally lower than the measured rates, and (ii) the deeper the K- nuclear potential, the worse is the discrepancy. The A dependence of the calculated 1s Lambda hypernuclear production rates is discussed for the first time, providing a useful tool in resolving the issue of depth of the K- nuclear potential near threshold.

Dynamics of \bar{K} and multi-\bar{K} nuclei

We report on self-consistent calculations of single-K^- nuclear states and multi-Kbar nuclear states in 12C, 16O, 40Ca and 208Pb within the relativistic mean-field (RMF) approach. Gradient terms motivated by the p-wave resonance Sigma(1385) are found to play a secondary role for single-K^- nuclear systems where the mean-field concept is acceptable. Significant contributions from the Kbar N -> pi Lambda conversion mode, and from the nonmesonic Kbar NN -> YN conversion modes which are assumed to follow a rho^2 density dependence, are evaluated for the deep binding-energy range of over 100 MeV where the decay channel Kbar N -> pi Sigma is closed. Altogether we obtain K^- total decay widths of 50-100 MeV for binding energies exceeding 100 MeV in single-K^- nuclei. Multi-Kbar nuclear calculations indicate that the binding energy per Kbar meson saturates upon increasing the number of Kbar mesons embedded in the nuclear medium. The nuclear and Kbar densities increase only moderately and are close to saturation, with no indication of any kaon-condensation precursor.

Traces of Theta^+ pentaquark in K^+ nucleus dynamics

Long-standing anomalies in K^+ nucleus integral cross sections could be resolved by extending the impulse-approximation t*rho optical-potential framework to incorporate K^+ absorption on pairs of nucleons. Substantially improved fits to the data at p(lab)=500-700 MeV/c are obtained. An upper bound of 3.5 mb for the absorption cross section of K^+ per nucleon is derived. We conjecture that the underlying microscopic absorption process is K^+ n N --> Theta^+ N, where Theta^+(1540) is the newly discovered exotic Y=2, I=0, Z=1 pentaquark baryon, and estimate that the cross section for K^+ d --> Theta^+ p is a fraction of millibarn. Comments are made on Theta^+ production reactions on nuclei.

Testing Chiral Dynamics in Pionic Atoms

The energy dependence of chirally expanded pi N isoscalar and isovector amplitudes b_0(E) and b_1(E) respectively, for zero-momentum off shell pions near threshold, is used to impose the minimal substitution requirement E -> E - V_c on the properly constructed pion optical potential within a large-scale fit to 100 pionic-atom data across the periodic table which also include the recently established `deeply bound' pionic atoms of Pb and Sn. This fit cannot be reconciled with the well known free-space values of the pi N threshold amplitudes. In contrast, introducing the empirically known energy dependence for on-shell pions leads to a better fit and to satisfactory values for the pi N threshold amplitudes. The difference between these two approaches is briefly discussed.

Limits on the neutron-antineutron oscillation time from the stability of nuclei

We refute a recent claim by Nazaruk that the limits placed on the free--space neutron--antineutron oscillation time $τ_{n\bar n}$ can be improved by many orders of magnitude with respect to the estimate $τ_{n\bar n}>2(T_0/Γ)^{1/2}$, where $T_0$ is a measured limit on the annihilation lifetime of a nucleus and $Γ\sim 100$ MeV is a typical antineutron-nucleus annihilation width.
