Interaction dominated transport in 2D conductors: from degenerate to partially-degenerate regime

In this study, we investigate the conductivity of a two-dimensional (2D) system in HgTe quantum well comprising two types of carriers with linear and quadratic spectra, respectively. The interactions between the two-dimensional Dirac holes and the heavy holes lead to the breakdown of Galilean invariance, resulting in interaction-limited resistivity. Our exploration of the transport properties spans from low temperatures, where both subsystems are fully degenerate, to higher temperatures, where the Dirac holes remain degenerate while the heavy holes follow Boltzmann statistics, creating a partially degenerate regime. Through a developed theory, we successfully predict the behavior of resistivity as $ρ\sim T^2$ and $ρ\sim T^{3}$ for the fully degenerate and partially degenerate regimes, respectively, which is in reasonable agreement with experimental observations. Notably, at elevated temperatures, the interaction-limited resistivity surpasses the resistivity caused by impurity scattering by a factor of 5-6. These findings imply that the investigated system serves as a versatile experimental platform for exploring various interaction-limited transport regimes in two component plasma.

Quantum transport of Dirac fermions in HgTe gapless quantum wells

We study transport properties of HgTe quantum wells with critical well thickness, where the band gap is closed, and the low energy spectrum is described by a single Dirac cone. In this work, we examined both macroscopic and micron-sized (mesocopic) samples. In micron-sized samples, we observe a magnetic field induced, quantized resistance ($\sim h/2e^{2}$) at Landau filling factor $ν=0$, corresponding to the formation of helical edge states centered at the charge neutrality point (CNP). In macroscopic samples, the resistance near zero Landau level (LL) reveals strong oscillations, which we attribute to scattering between the edge $ν=0$ state and bulk $ν\neq 0$ hole LL. We provide a model taking an empirical approach to construct a LL diagram based on a reservoir scenario, formed by the heavy holes.

Viscous magnetotransport and Gurzhi effect in bilayer electron system

We observe a large negative magnetoresistance and a decrease of resistivity with increasing temperature, known as the Gurzhi effect, in a bilayer electron (BL) system formed by a wide GaAs quantum well. A hydrodynamic model for the single fluid transport parameters in narrow channels is employed and successfully describes our experimental findings. We find that the electron-electron scattering in the bilayer is more intensive in comparison with a single-band well (SW). The hydrodynamic assumption implies a strong dependence on boundary conditions, which can be characterized by slip length, describing the behavior of a liquid near the edge. Our results reveal that slip length in a BL is shorter than in a SW, and that the BL system goes deeper into the hydrodynamic regime. This is in agreement with the model proposed where the slip length is of the order of the electron-electron mean free path.

Manifestations of classical size effect and electronic viscosity in the magnetoresistance of narrow two-dimensional conductors: Theory and experiment

We develop a classical kinetic theory of magnetotransport of 2D electrons in narrow channels with partly diffusive boundary scattering and apply it to description of magnetoresistance measured in the temperature interval 4.2-30 K in long mesoscopic bars fabricated from high-purity GaAs quantum well structures. Both experiment and theory demonstrate a number of characteristic features in the longitudinal and Hall resistances caused by the size effect in two dimensions owing to the high ballisticity of the transport. In addition to the features described previously, we also reveal a change in the slope of the first derivative of magnetoresistance when the cyclotron orbit diameter equals to half of the channel width. These features are suppressed with increasing temperature as a result of the electronic viscosity due to electron-electron interaction. By comparing theory and experiment, we determine the characteristic time of relaxation of angular distribution of electrons caused by electron-electron scattering.

Stokes flow around an obstacle in viscous two-dimensional electron liquid

The electronic analog of the Poiseuille flow is the transport in a narrow channel with disordered edges that scatter electrons in a diffuse way. In the hydrodynamic regime, the resistivity decreases with temperature, referred to as the Gurzhi effect, distinct from conventional Ohmic behaviour. We studied experimentally an electronic analog of the Stokes flow around a disc immersed in a two-dimensional viscous liquid. The circle obstacle results in an additive contribution to resistivity. If specular boundary conditions apply, it is no longer possible to detect Poiseuille type flow and the Gurzhi effect. However, in flow through a channel with a circular obstacle, the resistivity decreases with temperature. By tuning the temperature, we observed the transport signatures of the ballistic and hydrodynamic regimes on the length scale of disc size. Our experimental results confirm theoretical predictions.

Magnetocapacitance oscillations and thermoelectric effect in two-dimensional electron gas irradiated by microwaves

To study the influence of microwave irradiation on two-dimensional electrons, we apply a method based on capacitance measurements in GaAs quantum well samples where the gate covers a central part of the layer. We find that the capacitance oscillations at high magnetic fields, caused by the oscillations of thermodynamic density of states, are not essentially modified by microwaves. However, in the region of fields below 1 Tesla, we observe another set of oscillation, with the period and the phase identical to those of microwave induced resistance oscillations. The phenomenon of microwave induced capacitance oscillations is explained in terms of violation of the Einstein relation between conductivity and the diffusion coefficient in the presence of microwaves, which leads to a dependence of the capacitor charging on the anomalous conductivity. We also observe microwave-induced oscillations in the capacitive response to periodic variations of external heating. These oscillations appear due to the thermoelectric effect and are in antiphase with microwave induced resistance oscillations because of the Corbino-like geometry of our experimental setup.

Magnetophonon oscillations of thermoelectric power and combined resonance in two-subband electron systems

By measuring the thermoelectric effect in high-mobility quantum wells with two occupied subbands in perpendicular magnetic field, we detect magnetophonon oscillations due to interaction of electrons with acoustic phonons. These oscillations contain specific features identified as combined resonances caused by intersubband phonon-assisted transitions of electrons in the presence of Landau quantization. The quantum theory of phonon-drag magnetothermoelectric effect, generalized to the case of multi-subband occupation, describes our experimental findings.

Effective spectrum width of the synchrotron radiation

For an exact quantitative description of spectral properties of synchrotron radiation (SR), the concept of effective width of the spectrum is introduced. In the most interesting case, which corresponds to the ultrarelativistic limit of SR, the effective width of the spectrum is calculated for the polarization components, and new physically important quantitative information on the structure of spectral distributions is obtained. For the first time, the spectral distribution for the circular polarization component of the SR for the upper half-space is obtained within classical theory.

Microwave-induced magnetooscillations and signatures of zero-resistance states in phonon-drag voltage in two-dimensional electron systems

We observe the phonon-drag voltage oscillations correlating with the resistance oscillations under microwave irradiation in a two-dimensional electron gas in perpendicular magnetic field. This phenomenon is explained by the influence of dissipative resistivity modified by microwaves on the phonon-drag voltage perpendicular to the phonon flux. When the lowest-order resistance minima evolve into zero-resistance states, the phonon-drag voltage demonstrates sharp features suggesting that current domains associated with these states can exist in the absence of external dc driving.

Peculiarities of electron energy spectrum in Coulomb field of super heavy nucleus

Just after the Dirac equation was established, a number of physicists tried to comment on and solve the spectral problem for the Dirac Hamiltonian with the Coulomb field of arbitrarily large charge $Z$, especially with $Z$ that is more than the critical value $Z_{\mathrm{c}}=α^{-1}\simeq137,04$, making sometimes contradictory conclusions and presenting doubtful solutions. It seems that there is no consesus on this problem up until now and especially on the way of using corresponding solutions of the Dirac equation in calculating physical processes. That is why in the present article, we turn once again to discussing peculiarities of electron energy spectrum in the Coulomb field of superheavy nucleus. In the beginning, we remind the reader of a long story with a wrong interpretation of the problem in the case of a point nucleus and its present correct solution. We then turn to the spectral problem in the case of a regularized Coulomb field. Under a specific regularization, we derive an exact spectrum equation determining the point spectrum in the energy interval $(-m,m)$ and present some of its numerical solutions. We also derive an exact equation for charges $Z$ providing bound states with energy $E=-m$. Its analytical and numerical analysis shows that there exists an infinite number of such charges; in this connection , we discuss the notion of supercritical charge.

Persistence of two-dimensional topological insulator state in wide HgTe quantum well

Our experimental studies of electron transport in wide (14 nm) HgTe quantum wells confirm persistence of a two-dimensional topological insulator state reported previously for narrower wells, where it was justified theoretically. Comparison of local and nonlocal resistance measurements indicate edge state transport in the samples of about 1 mm size at temperatures below 1 K. Temperature dependence of the resistances suggests an insulating gap of the order of a few meV. In samples with sizes smaller than 10 $μ$m a quasiballistic transport via the edge states is observed.

Entanglement of two-qubit photon beam by magnetic field

We have studied the possibility of affecting the entanglement measure of 2-qubit system consisting of two photons with different fixed frequencies but with two arbitrary linear polarizations, moving in the same direction, by the help of an applied external magnetic field. The interaction between the magnetic field and the photons in our model is achieved through intermediate electrons that interact with both the photons and the magnetic field. The possibility of exact theoretical analysis of this scheme is based on known exact solutions that describe the interaction of an electron subjected to an external magnetic field (or a medium of electrons not interacting with each other) with a quantized field of two photons. We adapt these exact solutions to the case under consideration. Using explicit wave functions for the resulting electromagnetic field, we calculate the entanglement measure of the photon beam as a function of the applied magnetic field and parameters of the electron medium.

Microwave induced nonlocal transport in two-dimensional electron system

We observe microwave induced nonlocal resistance in magnetotransport in single and bilayer electronic systems. The obtained results provide evidence for an edge state current stabilized by microwave irradiation due to nonlinear resonances. Our observation are closely related to microwave induced oscillations and zero resistance states in a two-dimensional (2D) electron system.

Quantum Hall effect in n-p-n and n-2D Topological Insulator-n junctions

We have studied quantized transport in HgTe wells with inverted band structure corresponding to the two-dimensional topological insulator phase (2D TI) with locally-controlled density allowing n-p-n and n-2D TI-n junctions. The resistance reveals the fractional plateau $2h/e^{2}$ in n-p-n regime in the presence of the strong perpendicular magnetic field. We found that in n-2D TI-n regime the plateaux in resistance in not universal and results from the edge state equilibration at the interface between chiral and helical edge modes. We provided the simple model describing the resistance quantization in n-2D TI-n regime.

The resistance of 2D Topological insulator in the absence of the quantized transport

We report unconventional transport properties of HgTe wells with inverted band structure: the resistance does not show insulating behavior even when it is of the order of $10^2\times h/2e^{2}$. The system is expected to be a two-dimensional topological insulator with a dominant edge state contribution. The results are inconsistent with theoretical models developed within the framework of the helical Luttinger liquid.

Coherent states and related quantizations for unbounded motions

We build coherent states (CS) for unbounded motions along two different procedures. In the first one we adapt the Malkin-Manko construction for quadratic Hamiltonians to the motion of a particle in a linear potential. A generalization to arbitrary potentials is discussed. The second one extends to continuous spectrum previous constructions of action-angle coherent states in view of a consistent energy quantization.

Electronic Structure of Superheavy Atoms. Revisited

The electronic structure of an atom with Z <= 137 can be described by the Dirac equation with the Coulomb field of a point charge Ze. It was believed that the Dirac equation with Z > 137 is inconsistent and physically meaningless because the formula for the lower energy level of the Dirac Hamiltonian formally gives imaginary eigenvalues. But a strict mathematical consideration shows that difficulties with the electronic spectrum for Z > 137 do not arise if the Dirac Hamiltonian is correctly defined as a self-adjoint operator, see [1]. In this article, we brie y summarize the main physical results of that consideration in a form suitable for physicists with some additional new details and numerical calculations of the electronic spectra. Nonlocal transport near the charge neutrality point in a two-dimensional electron-hole system

Nonlocal resistance is studied in a two-dimensional system with a simultaneous presence of electrons and holes in a 20 nm HgTe quantum well. A large nonlocal electric response is found near the charge neutrality point (CNP) in the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field. We attribute the observed nonlocality to the edge state transport via counter propagating chiral modes similar to the quantum spin Hall effect at zero magnetic field and graphene near Landau filling factor $ν=0$

Quantum deformation of the angular distributions of synchrotron radiation. Emission of particles in the first excited state

The exact expressions for the characteristics of synchrotron radiation of charged particles in the first excited state are obtained in analytical form using quantum theory methods. We performed a detailed analysis of the angular distribution structure of radiation power and its polarization for particles with spin 0 and 1/2. It is shown that the exact quantum calculations lead to results that differ substantially from the predictions of classical theory.

Quantum motion in superposition of Aharonov-Bohm with some additional electromagnetic fields

The structure of additional electromagnetic fields to the Aharonov-Bohm field, for which the Schrödinger, Klein-Gordon, and Dirac equations can be solved exactly are described and the corresponding exact solutions are found. It is demonstrated that aside from the known cases (a constant and uniform magnetic field that is parallel to the Aharonov-Bohm solenoid, a static spherically symmetrical electric field, and the field of a magnetic monopole), there are broad classes of additional fields. Among these new additional fields we have physically interesting electric fields acting during a finite time, or localized in a restricted region of space. There are additional time-dependent uniform and isotropic electric fields that allow exact solutions of the Schrodinger equation. In the relativistic case there are additional electric fields propagating along the Aharonov-Bohm solenoid with arbitrary electric pulse shape.

Two and four-level systems in magnetic fields restricted in time

We describe some new exact solutions for two- and four-level systems. In all the cases, external fields have a restricted behavior in time. First, we consider two types of new solutions for one-spin equation, one of them is in a external magnetic field that acts during a finite time interval. A new solution for two interacting spins is found in the case when the field difference between the external fields in each spin vary adiabatically, vanishing on the time infinity. The latter system can be identified with a quantum gate realized by two coupled quantum dots. The probability of the Swap operation for such a gate can be explicitly expressed in terms of special functions. Using the obtained expressions, we construct plots for the Swap operation for some parameters of the external magnetic field and interaction function.
