Continuous functions with impermeable graphs

We construct a Hölder continuous function on the unit interval which coincides in uncountably (in fact continuum) many points with every function of total variation smaller than 1 passing through the origin. We say that a function with this property has impermeable graph, and we present further examples of functions both with permeable and impermeable graphs. The first example function is subsequently used to construct an example of a continuous function on the plane which is intrinsically Lipschitz continuous on the complement of the graph of a Hölder continuous function with impermeable graph, but which is not Lipschitz continuous on the plane. As another main result we construct a continuous function on the unit interval which coincides in a set of Hausdorff dimension 1 with every function of total variation smaller than 1 which passes through the origin.

Generic Hölder level sets on Fractals

Hausdorff dimensions of level sets of generic continuous functions defined on fractals were considered in two papers by R. Balka, Z. Buczolich and M. Elekes. In those papers the topological Hausdorff dimension of fractals was defined. In this paper we start to study level sets of generic $1$-Hölder-$α$ functions defined on fractals. This is related to some sort of "thickness", "conductivity" properties of fractals. The main concept of our paper is $D_{*}(α, F)$ which is the essential supremum of the Hausdorff dimensions of the level sets of a generic $1$-Hölder-$α$ function defined on the fractal $F$. We prove some basic properties of $D_{*}(α, F)$, we calculate its value for an example of a "thick fractal sponge", we show that for connected self similar sets $D_{*}(α, F)$ it equals the Hausdorff dimension of almost every level in the range of a generic $1$-Hölder-$α$ function.

Measures, annuli and dimensions

Given a Radon probability measure $μ$ supported in $\mathbb{R}^d$, we are interested in those points $x$ around which the measure is concentrated infinitely many times on thin annuli centered at $x$. Depending on the lower and upper dimension of $μ$, the metric used in the space and the thinness of the annuli, we obtain results and examples when such points are of $μ$-measure $0$ or of $μ$-measure $1$. The measure concentration we study is related to ''bad points'' for the Poincaré recurrence theorem and to the first return times to shrinking balls under iteration generated by a weakly Markov dynamical system. The study of thin annuli and spherical averages is also important in many dimension-related problems, including Kakeya-type problems and Falconer's distance set conjecture.

Big and little Lipschitz one sets

Given a continuous function $f: {\mathbb R}\to {\mathbb R}$ we denote the so-called "big Lip" and "little lip" functions by $ {\mathrm {Lip}} f$ and $ {\mathrm {lip}} f$ respectively}. In this paper we are interested in the following question. Given a set $E {\subset} {\mathbb R}$ is it possible to find a continuous function $f$ such that $ {\mathrm {lip}} f=\mathbf{1}_E$ or $ {\mathrm {Lip}} f=\mathbf{1}_E$? For monotone continuous functions we provide the rather straightforward answer. For arbitrary continuous functions the answer is much more difficult to find. We introduce the concept of uniform density type (UDT) and show that if $E$ is $G_δ$ and UDT then there exists a continuous function $f$ satisfying $ {\mathrm {Lip}} f =\mathbf{1}_E$, that is, $E$ is a $ {\mathrm {Lip}} 1$ set. In the other direction we show that every ${\mathrm {Lip}} 1$ set is $G_δ$ and weakly dense. We also show that the converse of this statement is not true, namely that there exist weakly dense $G_{δ}$ sets which are not $ {\mathrm {Lip}} 1$. We say that a set $E\subset \mathbb{R}$ is ${\mathrm {lip}} 1$ if there is a continuous function $f$ such that ${\mathrm {lip}} f=\mathbf{1}_E$. We introduce the concept of strongly one-sided density and show that every ${\mathrm {lip}} 1$ set is a strongly one-sided dense $F_σ$ set.

Divergence of weighted square averages in $L^1$

We study convergence of ergodic averages along squares with polynomial weights. For a given polynomial $P\in \mathbb{Z}[\cdot]$, consider the set of all $θ\in[0,1)$ such that for every aperiodic system $(X,μ, T)$ there is a function $f\in L^1(X,μ)$ such that the weighted averages along squares $$ {\frac{1}{N}\sum_{n=1}^N} e(P(n)θ)T^{n^2}f $$ diverge on a set with positive measure. We show that this set is residual and includes the rational numbers as well as a dense set of Liouville numbers. This on one hand extends the divergence result for squares in $L^1$ of the first author and Mauldin and on the other hand shows that the convergence result for linear weights for squares due to the second author and Krause in $L^p$, $p>1$ does not hold for $p=1$.

Characterization of lip sets

We denote the local ``little" Lipschitz constant of a function $f: {\mathbb R}\to { {\mathbb R}}$ by $ {\mathrm{lip}}f$. In this paper we settle the following question: For which sets $E {\subset} { {\mathbb R}}$ is it possible to find a continuous function $f$ such that $ {\mathrm{lip}}f=\mathbf{1} _E$? In an earlier paper we introduced the concept of strongly one-sided dense sets. Our main result characterizes $ {\mathrm{lip}}1$ sets as countable unions of closed sets which are strongly one-sided dense. We also show that a stronger statement is not true i.e. there are strongly one-sided dense $F _σ$ sets which are not $ {\mathrm{lip}}1$.

A new fractal dimension: The topological Hausdorff dimension

We introduce a new concept of dimension for metric spaces, the so-called topological Hausdorff dimension. It is defined by a very natural combination of the definitions of the topological dimension and the Hausdorff dimension. The value of the topological Hausdorff dimension is always between the topological dimension and the Hausdorff dimension, in particular, this new dimension is a non-trivial lower estimate for the Hausdorff dimension. We examine the basic properties of this new notion of dimension, compare it to other well-known notions, determine its value for some classical fractals such as the Sierpinski carpet, the von Koch snowflake curve, Kakeya sets, the trail of the Brownian motion, etc. As our first application, we generalize the celebrated result of Chayes, Chayes and Durrett about the phase transition of the connectedness of the limit set of Mandelbrot's fractal percolation process. They proved that certain curves show up in the limit set when passing a critical probability, and we prove that actually `thick' families of curves show up, where roughly speaking the word thick means that the curves can be parametrized in a natural way by a set of large Hausdorff dimension. The proof of this is basically a lower estimate of the topological Hausdorff dimension of the limit set. For the sake of completeness, we also give an upper estimate and conclude that in the non-trivial cases the topological Hausdorff dimension is almost surely strictly below the Hausdorff dimension. Finally, as our second application, we show that the topological Hausdorff dimension is precisely the right notion to describe the Hausdorff dimension of the level sets of the generic continuous function (in the sense of Baire category) defined on a compact metric space.

Measures and functions with prescribed homogeneous multifractal spectrum

In this paper we construct measures supported in $[0,1]$ with prescribed multifractal spectrum. Moreover, these measures are homogeneously multifractal (HM, for short), in the sense that their restriction on any subinterval of $[0,1]$ has the same multifractal spectrum as the whole measure. The spectra $f$ that we are able to prescribe are suprema of a countable set of step functions supported by subintervals of $[0,1]$ and satisfy $f(h)\leq h$ for all $h\in [0,1]$. We also find a surprising constraint on the multifractal spectrum of a HM measure: the support of its spectrum within $[0,1]$ must be an interval. This result is a sort of Darboux theorem for multifractal spectra of measures. This result is optimal, since we construct a HM measure with spectrum supported by $[0,1] \cup {2}$. Using wavelet theory, we also build HM functions with prescribed multifractal spectrum.

Typical Borel measures on $[0,1]d$ satisfy a multifractal formalism

In this article, we prove that in the Baire category sense, measures supported by the unit cube of $\R^d$ typically satisfy a multifractal formalism. To achieve this, we compute explicitly the multifractal spectrum of such typical measures $μ$. This spectrum appears to be linear with slope 1, starting from 0 at exponent 0, ending at dimension $d$ at exponent $d$, and it indeed coincides with the Legendre transform of the $L^q$-spectrum associated with typical measures $μ$.
