Generic Hölder level sets on Fractals

Hausdorff dimensions of level sets of generic continuous functions defined on fractals were considered in two papers by R. Balka, Z. Buczolich and M. Elekes. In those papers the topological Hausdorff dimension of fractals was defined. In this paper we start to study level sets of generic 11-Hölder-αα functions defined on fractals. This is related to some sort of "thickness", "conductivity" properties of fractals. The main concept of our paper is D∗(α,F)D_{*}(α, F) which is the essential supremum of the Hausdorff dimensions of the level sets of a generic 11-Hölder-αα function defined on the fractal FF. We prove some basic properties of D∗(α,F)D_{*}(α, F), we calculate its value for an example of a "thick fractal sponge", we show that for connected self similar sets D∗(α,F)D_{*}(α, F) it equals the Hausdorff dimension of almost every level in the range of a generic 11-Hölder-αα function.

Big and little Lipschitz one sets

Given a continuous function f:R→Rf: {\mathbb R}\to {\mathbb R} we denote the so-called "big Lip" and "little lip" functions by Lipf {\mathrm {Lip}} f and lipf {\mathrm {lip}} f respectively}. In this paper we are interested in the following question. Given a set E⊂RE {\subset} {\mathbb R} is it possible to find a continuous function ff such that lipf=1E {\mathrm {lip}} f=\mathbf{1}_E or Lipf=1E {\mathrm {Lip}} f=\mathbf{1}_E? For monotone continuous functions we provide the rather straightforward answer. For arbitrary continuous functions the answer is much more difficult to find. We introduce the concept of uniform density type (UDT) and show that if EE is GδG_δ and UDT then there exists a continuous function ff satisfying Lipf=1E {\mathrm {Lip}} f =\mathbf{1}_E, that is, EE is a Lip1 {\mathrm {Lip}} 1 set. In the other direction we show that every Lip1{\mathrm {Lip}} 1 set is GδG_δ and weakly dense. We also show that the converse of this statement is not true, namely that there exist weakly dense GδG_{δ} sets which are not Lip1 {\mathrm {Lip}} 1. We say that a set E⊂RE\subset \mathbb{R} is lip1{\mathrm {lip}} 1 if there is a continuous function ff such that lipf=1E{\mathrm {lip}} f=\mathbf{1}_E. We introduce the concept of strongly one-sided density and show that every lip1{\mathrm {lip}} 1 set is a strongly one-sided dense FσF_σ set.

Chest X-ray lung and heart segmentation based on minimal training sets

As the COVID-19 pandemic aggravated the excessive workload of doctors globally, the demand for computer aided methods in medical imaging analysis increased even further. Such tools can result in more robust diagnostic pipelines which are less prone to human errors. In our paper, we present a deep neural network to which we refer to as Attention BCDU-Net, and apply it to the task of lung and heart segmentation from chest X-ray (CXR) images, a basic but ardous step in the diagnostic pipeline, for instance for the detection of cardiomegaly. We show that the fine-tuned model exceeds previous state-of-the-art results, reaching 98.1±0.1%98.1\pm 0.1\% Dice score and 95.2±0.1%95.2\pm 0.1\% IoU score on the dataset of Japanese Society of Radiological Technology (JSRT). Besides that, we demonstrate the relative simplicity of the task by attaining surprisingly strong results with training sets of size 10 and 20: in terms of Dice score, 97.0±0.8%97.0\pm 0.8\% and 97.3±0.597.3\pm 0.5, respectively, while in terms of IoU score, 92.2±1.2%92.2\pm 1.2\% and 93.3±0.4%93.3\pm 0.4\%, respectively. To achieve these scores, we capitalize on the mixup augmentation technique, which yields a remarkable gain above 4%4\% IoU score in the size 10 setup.

Attention U-Net Based Adversarial Architectures for Chest X-ray Lung Segmentation

Chest X-ray is the most common test among medical imaging modalities. It is applied for detection and differentiation of, among others, lung cancer, tuberculosis, and pneumonia, the last with importance due to the COVID-19 disease. Integrating computer-aided detection methods into the radiologist diagnostic pipeline, greatly reduces the doctors' workload, increasing reliability and quantitative analysis. Here we present a novel deep learning approach for lung segmentation, a basic, but arduous task in the diagnostic pipeline. Our method uses state-of-the-art fully convolutional neural networks in conjunction with an adversarial critic model. It generalized well to CXR images of unseen datasets with different patient profiles, achieving a final DSC of 97.5% on the JSRT dataset.

Characterization of lip sets

We denote the local ``little" Lipschitz constant of a function f:R→Rf: {\mathbb R}\to { {\mathbb R}} by lipf {\mathrm{lip}}f. In this paper we settle the following question: For which sets E⊂RE {\subset} { {\mathbb R}} is it possible to find a continuous function ff such that lipf=1E {\mathrm{lip}}f=\mathbf{1} _E? In an earlier paper we introduced the concept of strongly one-sided dense sets. Our main result characterizes lip1 {\mathrm{lip}}1 sets as countable unions of closed sets which are strongly one-sided dense. We also show that a stronger statement is not true i.e. there are strongly one-sided dense FσF _σ sets which are not lip1 {\mathrm{lip}}1.
