Universality of the least singular value for the sum of random matrices

We consider the least singular value of $M = R^* X T + U^* YV$, where $R,T,U,V$ are independent Haar-distributed unitary matrices and $X, Y$ are deterministic diagonal matrices. Under weak conditions on $X$ and $Y$, we show that the limiting distribution of the least singular value of $M$, suitably rescaled, is the same as the limiting distribution for the least singular value of a matrix of i.i.d. gaussian random variables. Our proof is based on the dynamical method used by Che and Landon to study the local spectral statistics of sums of Hermitian matrices.

Local spectral statistics of the addition of random matrices

We consider the local statistics of $H = V^* X V + U^* Y U$ where $V$ and $U$ are independent Haar-distributed unitary matrices, and $X$ and $Y$ are deterministic real diagonal matrices. In the bulk, we prove that the gap statistics and correlation functions coincide with the GUE in the limit when the matrix size $N \to \infty$ under mild assumptions on $X$ and $Y$. Our method relies on running a carefully chosen diffusion on the unitary group and comparing the resulting eigenvalue process to Dyson Brownian motion. Our method also applies to the case when $V$ and $U$ are drawn from the orthogonal group. Our proof relies on the local law for $H$ proved by [Bao-Erdős-Schnelli] as well as the DBM convergence results of [L.-Sosoe-Yau].

Universality of random matrices with correlated entries

We consider an $N$ by $N$ real symmetric random matrix $X=(x_{ij})$ where $\mathbb{E}x_{ij}x_{kl}=ξ_{ijkl}$. Under the assumption that $(ξ_{ijkl})$ is the discretization of a piecewise Lipschitz function and that the correlation is short-ranged we prove that the empirical spectral measure of $X$ converges to a probability measure. The Stieltjes transform of the limiting measure can be obtained by solving a functional equation. Under the slightly stronger assumption that $(x_{ij})$ has a strictly positive definite covariance matrix, we prove a local law for the empirical measure down to the optimal scale $\text{Im} z \gtrsim N^{-1}$. The local law implies delocalization of eigenvectors. As another consequence we prove that the eigenvalue statistics in the bulk agrees with that of the GOE.

Spectral Statistics of Sparse Random Graphs with a General Degree Distribution

We consider the adjacency matrices of sparse random graphs from the Chung-Lu model, where edges are added independently between the $N$ vertices with varying probabilities $p_{ij}$. The rank of the matrix $(p_{ij})$ is some fixed positive integer. We prove that the distribution of eigenvalues is given by the solution of a functional self-consistent equation. We prove a local law down to the optimal scale and prove bulk universality. The results are parallel to \cite{Erdos2013b} and \cite{Landon2015}.
