Computing Shor's algorithmic steps with classical light beams

When considered as orthogonal bases in distinct vector spaces, the unit vectors of polarization directions and the Laguerre-Gaussian modes of polarization amplitude are inseparable, constituting a so-called classical entangled light beam. Equating this classical entanglement to quantum entanglement necessary for computing purpose, we show that the parallelism featured in Shor's factoring algorithm is equivalent to the concurrent light-path propagation of an entangled beam or pulse train. A gedanken experiment is proposed for executing the key algorithmic steps of modular exponentiation and Fourier transform on a target integer $N$ using only classical manipulations on the amplitudes and polarization directions. The multiplicative order associated with the sought-after integer factors is identified through a four-hole diffraction interference from sources obtained from the entangled beam profile. The unique mapping from the fringe patterns to the computed order is demonstrated through simulations for the case $N=15$.

Scalable semi-classical implementation of Shor factoring using time-multiplexed degenerate optical parametric oscillators

A scheme to encode arbitrarily long integer pairs on degenerate optical parametric oscillations multiplexed in time is proposed. The classical entanglement between the polarization directions and the phases of the oscillating pulses, regarded as two computational registers, furnishes the integer correlations within each pair. We show the major algorithmic steps, modular exponentiation and discrete Fourier transform, of Shor's quantum factoring algorithm can be executed in the registers as pulse interferences under the assistance of external logics. The factoring algorithm is thus rendered equivalent to a semi-classical optical-path implementation that is scalable and decoherence-free. The sought-after multiplicative order, from which the prime factors are deduced, is identified from a two-dimensional fringe image generated by four-hole interference measured at the end of the path.

Crystalline and magnetic structures, magnetization, heat capacity and anisotropic magnetostriction effect in a yttrium-chromium oxide

We have studied a nearly stoichiometric insulating Y$_{0.97(2)}$Cr$_{0.98(2)}$O$_{3.00(2)}$ single crystal by performing measurements of magnetization, heat capacity, and neutron diffraction. Albeit that the YCrO$_3$ compound behaviors like a soft ferromagnet with a coersive force of $\sim$ 0.05 T, there exist strong antiferromagnetic (AFM) interactions between Cr$^{3+}$ spins due to a strongly negative paramagnetic Curie-Weiss temperature, i.e., -433.2(6) K. The coexistence of ferromagnetism and antiferromagnetism may indicate a canted AFM structure. The AFM phase transition occurs at $T_\textrm{N} =$ 141.5(1) K, which increases to $T_\textrm{N}$(5T) = 144.5(1) K at 5 T. Within the accuracy of the present neuron-diffraction studies, we determine a G-type AFM structure with a propagation vector \textbf{k} = (1 1 0) and Cr$^{3+}$ spin directions along the crystallographic \emph{c} axis of the orthorhombic structure with space group \emph{Pnma} below $T_\textrm{N}$. At 12 K, the refined moment size is 2.45(6) $μ_\textrm{B}$, $\sim$ 82\% of the theoretical saturation value 3 $μ_\textrm{B}$. The Cr$^{3+}$ spin interactions are probably two-dimensional Ising like within the reciprocal (1 1 0) scattering plane. Below $T_\textrm{N}$, the lattice configuration (\emph{a}, \emph{b}, \emph{c}, and \emph{V}) deviates largely downward from the Gr$\ddot{\textrm{u}}$neisen law, displaying an anisotropic magnetostriction effect and a magnetoelastic effect. Especially, the sample contraction upon cooling is enhanced below the AFM transition temperature. There is evidence to suggest that the actual crystalline symmetry of YCrO$_3$ compound is probably lower than the currently assumed one. Additionally, we compared the $t_{2\textrm{g}}$ YCrO$_3$ and the $e_\textrm{g}$ La$_{7/8}$Sr$_{1/8}$MnO$_3$ single crystals for a further understanding of the reason for the possible symmetry lowering.

Super-Necking Crystal Growth and Structural and Magnetic Properties of SrTb$_2$O$_4$ Single Crystals

We report on single-crystal growths of the SrTb$_2$O$_4$ compound by a super-necking technique with a laser-floating-zone furnace and study the stoichiometry, growth mode, and structural and magnetic properties by scanning electronic microscopy, neutron Laue, X-ray powder diffraction, and the physical property measurement system. We optimized the growth parameters, mainly the growth speed, atmosphere, and the addition of a Tb$_4$O$_7$ raw material. Neutron Laue diffraction displays the characteristic feature of a single crystal. Our study reveals an atomic ratio of Sr:Tb $ = 0.97(2){:}2.00(1)$ and a possible layer by layer crystal growth mode. Our X-ray powder diffraction study determines the crystal structure, lattice constants and atomic positions. The paramagnetic (PM) Curie--Weiss (CW) temperature $θ_{\texttt{CW}} =$ 5.00(4) K, and the effective PM moment $M^{\texttt{eff}}_{\texttt{mea}} =$ 10.97(1) $μ_\texttt{B}$ per Tb$^{3+}$ ion. The data of magnetization versus temperature can be divided into three regimes, showing a coexistence of antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic interactions. This probably leads to the magnetic frustration in the SrTb$_2$O$_4$ compound. The magnetization at 2 K and 14 T originates from both the Tb1 and Tb2 sites and is strongly frustrated with an expected saturation field at $\sim$41.5 T, displaying an intricate phase diagram with three ranges.

Observation of the Meissner state in superconducting arrays of 4-Ångstrom carbon nanotubes

We report clear observations of the magnetic Meissner effect in arrays of superconducting 4 Å carbon nanotubes grown in the linear channels of AlPO4-5 (AFI) zeolite single crystals. Both bulk magnetization and magnetic torque experiments show a clear signature of the lower critical Hc1 transition, a pronounced difference in zero-field cooled and field cooled branches during temperature sweeps below 6K, and signatures of 1D superconducting fluctuations below ~15-18 K. These experiments extend the magnetic phase diagram we obtained previously by resistive experiments [Z. Wang et al., Phys. Rev. B 81, 174530 (2010)] towards low magnetic fields and within the range of zero resistance.

1D goes 2D: A Kosterlitz Thouless transition in superconducting arrays of 4-Angstrom carbon nanotubes

We report superconducting resistive transition characteristics for array(s) of coupled 4-Angstrom single wall carbon nanotubes embedded in aluminophosphate-five (AFI) zeolite. The transition was observed to initiate at 15K with a slow resistance decrease switching to a sharp, order of magnitude drop between 7.5-6.0K. The transition has strong (anisotropic) magnetic field dependence. Differential resistance versus current (voltage) measurements indicate that the establishment of coherence proceeds in stages as the temperature is lowered below 15K. In particular, the sharp resistance drop and its attendant nonlinear IV characteristics are consistent with the manifestations of a Kosterlitz-Thouless (KT) transition that establishes quasi long range order in the plane transverse to the c-axis of the nanotubes, leading to an inhomogeneous system comprising 3D superconducting regions connected by weak links. Global coherence is established at below 5K with the appearance of a well-defined supercurrent gap at 2K.
