Robust Tensor Regression with Nonconvexity: Algorithmic and Statistical Theory

Tensor regression is an important tool for tensor data analysis, but existing works have not considered the impact of outliers, making them potentially sensitive to such data points. This paper proposes a low tubal rank robust regression method for analyzing high-dimensional tensor data with heavy-tailed random noise. The proposed method is based on a nonconvex relaxation of the tensor tubal rank within a general optimization framework, which allows for nonconvexity in both the loss and penalty functions. We develop an implementable estimation algorithm and establish its global convergence under some mild assumptions. Furthermore, we provide general statistical theories regarding stationary point, including the rates of convergence and bounds on the prediction error. These theoretical results cover many important models, such as linear models, generalized linear models, and Huber regression, and even encompass some nonconvex losses like correntropy and minimum distance criterion-induced losses. Supportive numerical evidence is provided through simulations and application studies.

Decay of higher order derivatives for $L^p$ solutions to the compressible fluid model of Korteweg type

We present a new derivation for the optimal decay of \textit{arbitrary} higher order derivatives for $L^p$ solutions to the compressible fluid model of Korteweg type. This approach, based on Gevrey estimates, is to establish uniform bounds on the growth of the radius of analyticity of the solution in negative Besov norms. For that end, the maximal regularity property involving Gevrey multiplier of heat kernel and non standard product Besov estimates are well developed. Our approach is partly inspired by Oliver-Titi's work and is applicable to a wide range of dissipative systems.

Robust Approximate Simulation for Hierarchical Control of Piecewise Affine Systems under Bounded Disturbances

Piecewise affine (PWA) systems are widely applied in many practical cases such as the control of nonlinear systems and hybrid dynamics. However, most of the existing PWA control methods have poor scalability with respect to the number of modes and system dimensions and may not be robust to the disturbances in performance. In this paper, we present a robust approximate simulation based control method for PWA systems under bounded external disturbances. First, a lower-dimensional linear system (abstraction) and an associated interface are designed to enable the output of the PWA system (concrete system) to track the output of the abstraction. Then, a Lyapunov-like simulation function is designed to show the boundedness of the output errors between the two systems. Furthermore, the results obtained for linear abstraction are extended to the case that a simpler PWA system is the abstraction. To illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach, simulation results are provided for two design examples.

Broad-line region configuration of the supermassive binary black hole candidate PG1302-102 in the relativistic Doppler boosting scenario

PG1302-102 is thought to be a supermassive binary black hole (BBH) system according to the periodical variations of its optical and UV photometry, which may be interpreted as being due to the relativistic Doppler boosting of the emission mainly from the disk around the secondary black hole (BH) modulated by its orbital motion. In this paper, we investigate several broad emission lines of PG1302-102 using archived UV spectra obtained by IUE, GALEX, and Hubble, to reveal the broad-line region (BLR) emission properties of this BBH system under the Doppler boosting scenario. We find that the broad lines Ly$α$, NV, CIV, and CIII] all show Gaussian profiles, and none of these lines exhibits obvious periodical variation. Adopting a simple model for the BLR, we perform Markov chain Monte Carlo fittings to these broad lines, and find that the BLR must be viewed at an orientation angle of $\sim33^{\circ}$, close to face-on. If the Doppler boosting interpretation is correct, then the BLR is misaligned with the BBH orbital plane by an angle of $\sim51^\circ$, which suggests that the Doppler boosted continuum variation has little effect on the broad-line emission and thus does not lead to periodical line variation. We further discuss the possible implications for such a BLR configuration with respect to the BBH orbital plane.

Testing the relativistic Doppler boost hypothesis for supermassive binary black holes candidates via broad emission line profiles

Optical periodicity QSOs found by transient surveys are suggested to be sub-parsec supermassive binary black holes (BBHs). An intriguing interpretation for the periodicity of some of those QSOs is that the continuum is radiated from the accretion disk associated with the BBH secondary component and modulated by the periodical rotation of the secondary via Doppler-boost effect. Close to edge-on orbital orientation can lead to more significant Doppler-boost effect and thus are preferred for these systems, which is distinct from those normal type-1 QSOs with more or less face-on orientations. Therefore, the profiles of broad lines emitted from these Doppler-modulated systems may be significantly different from other systems that are not Doppler-modulated. We investigate the properties of the broad emission lines of optical-periodicity QSOs, including both a sample of QSOs that can be interpreted by the Doppler-modulated effects and a sample that cannot. We find that there is no obvious difference in the profiles and other properties of various (stacked) broad emission lines of these two samples, though a simple broad line region model would suggest significant differences. Our finding raises a challenge to the Doppler boost hypothesis for some of those BBHs candidates with optical periodicity.
