Instantaneous unboundedness of the entropy and uniform positivity of the temperature for the compressible Navier-Stokes equations with fast decay density

This paper concerns the physical behaviors of any solutions to the one dimensional compressible Navier-Stokes equations for viscous and heat conductive gases with constant viscosities and heat conductivity for fast decaying density at far fields only. First, it is shown that the specific entropy becomes not uniformly bounded immediately after the initial time, as long as the initial density decays to vacuum at the far field at the rate not slower than $O\left(\frac1{|x|^{\ell_ρ}}\right)$ with $\ell_ρ>2$. Furthermore, for faster decaying initial density, i.e., $\ell_ρ\geq4$, a sharper result is discovered that the absolute temperature becomes uniformly positive at each positive time, no matter whether it is uniformly positive or not initially, and consequently the corresponding entropy behaves as $O(-\log(\varrho_0(x)))$ at each positive time, independent of the boundedness of the initial entropy. Such phenomena are in sharp contrast to the case with slowly decaying initial density of the rate no faster than $O(\frac1{x^2})$, for which our previous works \cite{LIXINADV,LIXINCPAM,LIXIN3DK} show that the uniform boundedness of the entropy can be propagated for all positive time and thus the temperature decays to zero at the far field. These give a complete answer to the problem concerning the propagation of uniform boundedness of the entropy for the heat conductive ideal gases and, in particular, show that the algebraic decay rate $2$ of the initial density at the far field is sharp for the uniform boundedness of the entropy. The tools to prove our main results are based on some scaling transforms, including the Kelvin transform, and a Hopf type lemma for a class of degenerate equations with possible unbounded coefficients.

On regular solutions for three-dimensional full compressible Navier-Stokes equations with degenerate viscosities and far field vacuum

In this paper, the Cauchy problem for the three-dimensional (3-D) full compressible Navier-Stokes equations (CNS) with zero thermal conductivity is considered. First, when shear and bulk viscosity coefficients both depend on the absolute temperature $θ$ in a power law ($θ^ν$ with $ν>0$) of Chapman-Enskog, based on some elaborate analysis of this system's intrinsic singular structures, we identify one class of initial data admitting a local-in-time regular solution with far field vacuum in terms of the mass density $ρ$, velocity $u$ and entropy $S$. Furthermore, it is shown that within its life span of such a regular solution, the velocity stays in an inhomogeneous Sobolev space, i.e., $u\in H^3(\mathbb{R}^3)$, $S$ has uniformly finite lower and upper bounds in the whole space, and the laws of conservation of total mass, momentum and total energy are all satisfied. Note that due to the appearance of the vacuum, the momentum equations are degenerate both in the time evolution and viscous stress tensor, and the physical entropy for polytropic gases behaves singularly, which make the study on corresponding well-posedness challenging. For proving the existence, we first introduce an enlarged reformulated structure by considering some new variables, which can transfer the degeneracies of the full CNS to the possible singularities of some special source terms related with $S$, and then carry out some singularly weighted energy estimates carefully designed for this reformulated system.

Stability analysis for the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations with Navier boundary conditions

This paper concerns the instability and stability of the trivial steady states of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations with Navier-slip boundary conditions in a slab domain in dimension two. The main results show that the stability (or instability) of this constant equilibrium depends crucially on whether the boundaries dissipate energy and the strengthen of the viscosity and slip length. It is shown that in the case that when all the boundaries are dissipative, then nonlinear asymptotic stability holds true, otherwise, there is a sharp critical viscosity, which distinguishes the nonlinear stability from instability.

Incompressible inviscid resistive MHD surface waves in 2D

We consider the dynamics of a layer of an incompressible electrically conducting fluid interacting with the magnetic field in a two-dimensional horizontally periodic setting. The upper boundary is in contact with the atmosphere, and the lower boundary is a rigid flat bottom. We prove the global well-posedness of the inviscid and resistive problem with surface tension around a non-horizontal uniform magnetic field; moreover, the solution decays to the equilibrium almost exponentially. One of the key observations here is an induced damping structure for the fluid vorticity due to the resistivity and transversal magnetic field.

On Some Smooth Symmetric Transonic Flows with Nonzero Angular Velocity and Vorticity

This paper concerns the structural stability of smooth cylindrically symmetric transonic flows in a concentric cylinder. Both cylindrical and axi-symmetric perturbations are considered. The governing system here is of mixed elliptic-hyperbolic and changes type and the suitable formulation of boundary conditions at the boundaries is of great importance. First, we establish the existence and uniqueness of smooth cylindrical transonic spiral solutions with nonzero angular velocity and vorticity which are close to the background transonic flow with small perturbations of the Bernoulli's function and the entropy at the outer cylinder and the flow angles at both the inner and outer cylinders independent of the symmetric axis, and it is shown that in this case, the sonic points of the flow are nonexceptional and noncharacteristically degenerate, and form a cylindrical surface. Second, we also prove the existence and uniqueness of axi-symmetric smooth transonic rotational flows which are adjacent to the background transonic flow, whose sonic points form an axi-symmetric surface. The key elements in our analysis are to utilize the deformation-curl decomposition for the steady Euler system introduced in \cite{WengXin19} to deal with the hyperbolicity in subsonic regions and to find an appropriate multiplier for the linearized second order mixed type equations which are crucial to identify the suitable boundary conditions and to yield the important basic energy estimates.

Steady Compressible Radially Symmetric Flows with Nonzero Angular Velocity in an Annulus

In this paper, we investigate steady inviscid compressible flows with radial symmetry in an annulus. The major concerns are transonic flows with or without shocks. One of the main motivations is to elucidate the role played by the angular velocity in the structure of steady inviscid compressible flows. We give a complete classification of flow patterns in terms of boundary conditions at the inner and outer circle. Due to the nonzero angular velocity, many new flow patterns will appear. There exists accelerating or decelerating smooth transonic flows in an annulus satisfying one side boundary conditions at the inner or outer circle with all sonic points being nonexceptional and noncharacteristically degenerate. More importantly, it is found that besides the well-known supersonic-subsonic shock in a divergent nozzle as in the case without angular velocity, there exists a supersonic-supersonic shock solution, where the downstream state may change smoothly from supersonic to subsonic. Furthermore, there exists a supersonic-sonic shock solution where the shock circle and the sonic circle coincide, which is new and interesting.

Entropy-bounded solutions to the one-dimensional heat conductive compressible Navier-Stokes equations with far field vacuum

In the presence of vacuum, the physical entropy for polytropic gases behaves singularly and it is thus a challenge to study its dynamics. It is shown in this paper that the boundedness of the entropy can be propagated up to any finite time provided that the initial vacuum presents only at far fields with sufficiently slow decay of the initial density. More precisely, for the Cauchy problem of the one dimensional heat conductive compressible Navier-Stokes equations, the global well-posedness of strong solutions and uniform boundedness of the corresponding entropy are established, as long as the initial density vanishes only at far fields with a rate no more than $O(\frac{1}{x^2})$. The main tools of proving the uniform boundedness of the entropy are some singularly weighted energy estimates carefully designed for the heat conductive compressible Navier-Stokes equations and an elaborate De Giorgi type iteration technique for some classes of degenerate parabolic equations. The De Giorgi type iterations are carried out to different equations in establishing the lower and upper bounds of the entropy.

On the vanishing dissipation limit for the incompressible MHD equations on bounded domains

In this paper, we investigate the solvability, regularity and the vanishing dissipation limit of solutions to the three-dimensional viscous magneto-hydrodynamic (MHD) equations in bounded domains. On the boundary, the velocity field fulfills a Navier-slip condition, while the magnetic field satisfies the insulating condition. It is shown that the initial-boundary problem has a global weak solution for a general smooth domain. More importantly, for a flat domain, we establish the uniform local well-posedness of the strong solution with higher order uniform regularity and the asymptotic convergence with a rate to the solution of the ideal MHD as the dissipation tends to zero.

Structural stability of the transonic shock problem in a divergent three dimensional axisymmetric perturbed nozzle

In this paper, we prove the structural stability of the transonic shocks for three dimensional axisymmetric Euler system with swirl velocity under the perturbations for the incoming supersonic flow, the nozzle boundary, and the exit pressure. Compared with the known results on the stability of transonic shocks, one of the major difficulties for the axisymmetric flows with swirls is that corner singularities near the intersection point of the shock surface and nozzle boundary and the artificial singularity near the axis appear simultaneously. One of the key points in the analysis for this paper is the introduction of an invertible Lagrangian transformation which can straighten the streamlines in the whole nozzle and help to represent the solutions of transport equations explicitly.

Subsonic flows past a profile with a vortex line at the trailing edge

We established the existence, uniqueness and stability of subsonic flows past an airfoil with a vortex line at the trailing edge. Such a flow pattern is governed by the two dimensional steady compressible Euler equations. The vortex line attached to the trailing edge is a contact discontinuity for the Euler system and is treated as a free boundary. The problem is formulated and solved by using the implicit function theorem. The main difficulties are due to the fitting of the vortex line with the profile at the trailing edge and the possible subtle instability of the vortex line at the far field. Suitable choices of the weights and elaborate barrier functions are found to deal with such difficulties.

Optimal decay for the compressible Navier-Stokes equations without additional smallness assumptions

This work is concerned with the large time behavior of solutions to the barotropic compressible Navier-Stokes equations in $\mathbb{R}^{d}(d\geq2)$. Precisely, it is shown that if the initial density and velocity additionally belong to some Besov space $\dot{B}^{-σ_1}_{2,\infty}$ with $σ_1\in (1-d/2, 2d/p-d/2]$, then the $L^p$ norm (the slightly stronger $\dot{B}^{0}_{p,1}$ norm in fact) of global solutions admits the optimal decay $t^{-\frac{d}{2}(\frac 12-\frac 1p)-\frac{σ_1}{2}}$ for $t\rightarrow+\infty$. In contrast to refined time-weighted approaches ([11,43]), a pure energy argument (independent of the spectral analysis) has been developed in more general $L^p$ critical framework, which allows to remove the smallness of low frequencies of initial data. Indeed, bounding the evolution of $\dot{B}^{-σ_1}_{2,\infty}$-norm restricted in low frequencies is the key ingredient, whose proof mainly depends on non standard $L^p$ product estimates with respect to different Sobolev embeddings. The result can hold true in case of large highly oscillating initial velocities.

Global Entropy Solutions to Weakly Nonlinear Gas Dynamics

Entropy weak solutions with bounded periodic initial data are considered for the system of weakly nonlinear gas dynamics. Through a modified Glimm scheme, an approximate solution sequence is constructed, and then a priori estimates are provided with the methods of approximate characteristics and approximate conservation laws, which gives not only the existence and uniqueness but also the uniform total variation bounds for the entropy solutions.

Asymptotic Stability of the Lane-Emden Solutions for the Viscous Gaseous Star Problem with Degenerate Density Dependent Viscosities

The nonlinear asymptotic stability of Lane-Emden solutions is proved in this paper for spherically symmetric motions of viscous gaseous stars with the density dependent shear and bulk viscosities which vanish at the vacuum, when the adiabatic exponent $γ$ lies in the stability regime $(4/3, 2)$, by establishing the global-in-time regularity uniformly up to the vacuum boundary for the vacuum free boundary problem of the compressible Navier-Stokes-Poisson systems with spherical symmetry, which ensures the global existence of strong solutions capturing the precise physical behavior that the sound speed is $C^{{1}/{2}}$-H$\ddot{\rm o}$lder continuous across the vacuum boundary, the large time asymptotic uniform convergence of the evolving vacuum boundary, density and velocity to those of Lane-Emden solutions with detailed convergence rates, and the detailed large time behavior of solutions near the vacuum boundary. The results obtained in this paper extend those in \cite{LXZ} of the authors for the constant viscosities to the case of density dependent viscosities which are degenerate at vacuum states.

Global Existence of Weak Solutions to the Barotropic Compressible Navier-Stokes Flows with Degenerate Viscosities

This paper concerns the existence of global weak solutions to the barotropic compressible Navier-Stokes equations with degenerate viscosity coefficients. We construct suitable approximate system which has smooth solutions satisfying the energy inequality, the BD entropy one, and the Mellet-Vasseur type estimate. Then, after adapting the compactness results due to Mellet-Vasseur [Comm. Partial Differential Equations 32 (2007)], we obtain the global existence of weak solutions to the barotropic compressible Navier-Stokes equations with degenerate viscosity coefficients in two or three dimensional periodic domains or whole space for large initial data. This, in particular, solved an open problem in [P. L. Lions. Mathematical topics in fluid mechanics. Vol. 2. Compressible models. Oxford University Press, 1998].

Non-uniqueness of Admissible Weak Solutions to Compressible Euler Systems with Source Terms

We consider admissible weak solutions to the compressible Euler system with source terms, which include rotating shallow water system and the Euler system with damping as special examples. In the case of anti-symmetric sources such as rotations, for general piecewise Lipschitz initial densities and some suitably constructed initial momentum, we obtain infinitely many global admissible weak solutions. Furthermore, we construct a class of finite-states admissible weak solutions to the Euler system with anti-symmetric sources. Under the additional smallness assumption on the initial densities, we also obtain multiple global-in-time admissible weak solutions for more general sources including damping. The basic framework are based on the convex integration method developed by De~Lellis and Székelyhidi \cite{dLSz1,dLSz2} for the Euler system. One of the main ingredients of this paper is the construction of specified localized plane wave perturbations which are compatible with a given source term.

On formation of singularity for non-isentropic Navier-Stokes equations without heat-conductivity

It is known that smooth solutions to the non-isentropic Navier-Stokes equations without heat-conductivity may lose their regularities in finite time in the presence of vacuum. However, in spite of the recent progress on such blowup phenomenon, it remain to give a possible blowup mechanism. In this paper, we present a simple continuation principle for such system, which asserts that the concentration of the density or the temperature occurs in finite time for a large class of smooth initial data, which is responsible for the breakdown of classical solutions. It also give an affirmative answer to a strong version of conjecture proposed by J.Nash in 1950s

On Liouville Type of Theorems to the 3-D Incompressible Axisymmetric Navier-Stokes Equations

Liouville type of theorems play a key role in the blow-up approach to study the global regularity of the three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations. In this paper, we will prove Liouville type of theorems to the 3-D axisymmetric Navier-Stokes equations with swirls under some suitable assumptions on swirl component velocity $u_θ$ which are scaling invariant. It is known that $ru_θ$ satisfies the maximum principle. The assumptions on $u_θ$ will be natural and useful to make further studies on the global regularity to the three-dimensional incompressible axisymmetric Navier-Stokes equations.

On Nonlinear Asymptotic Stability of the Lane-Emden Solutions for the Viscous Gaseous Star Problem

This paper proves the nonlinear asymptotic stability of the Lane-Emden solutions for spherically symmetric motions of viscous gaseous stars if the adiabatic constant $γ$ lies in the stability range $(4/3, 2)$. It is shown that for small perturbations of a Lane-Emden solution with same mass, there exists a unique global (in time) strong solution to the vacuum free boundary problem of the compressible Navier-Stokes-Poisson system with spherical symmetry for viscous stars, and the solution captures the precise physical behavior that the sound speed is $C^{{1}/{2}}$-H$\ddot{\rm o}$lder continuous across the vacuum boundary provided that $γ$ lies in $(4/3, 2)$. The key is to establish the global-in-time regularity uniformly up to the vacuum boundary, which ensures the large time asymptotic uniform convergence of the evolving vacuum boundary, density and velocity to those of the Lane-Emden solution with detailed convergence rates, and detailed large time behaviors of solutions near the vacuum boundary.

Uniform regularity for the free surface compressible Navier-Stokes equations with or without surface tension

In this paper, we investigate the uniform regularity of solutions to the 3-dimensional isentropic compressible Navier-Stokes system with free surfaces and study the corresponding asymptotic limits of such solutions to that of the compressible Euler system for vanishing viscosity and surface tension. It is shown that there exists an unique strong solution to the free boundary problem for the compressible Navier-Stokes system in a finite time interval which is independent of the viscosity and the surface tension. The solution is uniform bounded both in $W^{1,\infty}$ and a conormal Sobolev space. It is also shown that the boundary layer for the density is weaker than the one for the velocity field. Based on such uniform estimates, the asymptotic limits to the free boundary problem for the ideal compressible Euler system with or without surface tension as both the viscosity and the surface tension tend to zero, are established by a strong convergence argument.

Global Smooth Supersonic Flows in Infinite Expanding Nozzles

This paper concerns smooth supersonic flows with Lipschitz continuous speed in two-dimensional infinite expanding nozzles, which are governed by a quasilinear hyperbolic equation being singular at the sonic and vacuum state. The flow satisfies the slip condition on the walls and the flow velocity is prescribed at the inlet. First, it is proved that if the incoming flow is away from the sonic and vacuum state and its streamlines are rarefactive at the inlet, then a flow in a straight nozzle never approaches the sonic and vacuum state in any bounded region. Furthermore, a sufficient and necessary condition of the incoming flow at the inlet is derived for the existence of a global smooth supersonic flow in a straight nozzle. Then, it is shown that for each incoming flow satisfying this condition, there exists uniquely a global smooth supersonic flow in a symmetric nozzle with convex upper wall. It is noted that such a flow may contain a vacuum. If there is a vacuum for a global smooth transonic flow in a symmetric nozzle with convex upper wall, it is proved that for the symmetric upper part of the flow, the first vacuum point along the symmetric axis must be located at the upper wall and the set of vacuum points is the closed domain bounded by the tangent half-line of the upper wall at this point to downstream and the upper wall after this point. Moreover, the flow speed is globally Lipschitz continuous in the nozzle, and on the boundary between the gas and the vacuum, the flow velocity is along this boundary and the normal derivatives of the flow speed and the square of the sound speed both are zero. As an immediate consequence, the local smooth transonic flow obtained in [10] can be extended into a global smooth transonic flow in a symmetric nozzle whose upper wall after the local flow is convex.

Low Mach number limit for the full compressible magnetohydrodynamic equations with general initial data

The low Mach number limit for the full compressible magnetohydrodynamic equations with general initial data is rigorously justified in the whole space $\mathbb{R}^3$. The uniform in Mach number estimates of the solutions in a Sobolev space are obtained on a time interval independent of the Mach number. The limit is proved by using the established uniform estimates and a theorem due to Métiver and Schochet [Arch. Ration. Mech. Anal. 158 (2001), 61-90] for the Euler equations that gives the local energy decay of the acoustic wave equations.

On the uniqueness of weak solutions to the Ericksen-Leslie liquid crystal model in $\mathbb R^2$

This paper concerns the uniqueness of weak solutions to the Cauchy problem to the Ericksen-Leslie system of liquid crystal models in $\mathbb R^2$, with both general Leslie stress tensors and general Oseen-Frank density. It is shown here that such a system admits a unique weak solution provided that the Frank coefficients are close to some positive constant, which solves an interesting open problem. One of the main ideas of our proof is to perform suitable energy estimates at level one order lower than the natural basic energy estimates for the Ericksen-Leslie system.

Two Dimensional Subsonic Euler Flow. Past a Wall or a Symmetric Body

The existence and uniqueness of two dimensional steady compressible Euler flows past a wall or a symmetric body are established. More precisely, given positive convex horizontal veloicty in the upstream, there exists a critical value $ρ_{cr}$ such that if the incoming density in the upstream is larger than $ρ_{cr}$, then there exists a subsonic flow past a wall. Furthermore, $ρ_{cr}$ is critical in the sense that there is no such subsonic flow if the density of the incoming flow is less than $ρ_{cr}$. The subsonic flows possess large vorticity and positive horizontal velocity above the wall except at the corner points on the boundary. Moreover, the existence and uniqueness of a two dimensional subsonic Euler flow past a symmetric body are also obtained when the incoming velocity field is a general small perturbation of a constant velocity field and the density of the incoming flow is larger than a critical value. The asymptotic behavior of the flows is obtained with the aid of some integral estimates for the velocity field and its far field states.

Well-Posedness for the Motion of Physical Vacuum of the Three-dimensional Compressible Euler Equations with or without Self-Gravitation

This paper concerns the well-posedness theory of the motion of physical vacuum for the compressible Euler equations with or without self-gravitation. First, a general uniqueness theorem of classical solutions is proved for the three dimensional general motion. Second, for the spherically symmetric motions, without imposing the compatibility condition of the first derivative being zero at the center of symmetry, a new local-in-time existence theory is established in a functional space involving less derivatives than those constructed for three-dimensional motions in \cite{10',7,16'} by constructing suitable weights and cutoff functions featuring the behavior of solutions near both the center of the symmetry and the moving vacuum boundary.

Blow-up criteria of strong solutions to the Ericksen-Leslie system in $\Bbb R^3$

In this paper, we establish the local well-posedness and blow-up criteria of strong solutions to the Ericksen-Leslie system in $\Bbb R^3$ for the well-known Oseen-Frank model. The local existence of strong solutions to liquid crystal flows is obtained by using the Ginzburg-Landau approximation approach to guarantee the constraint that the direction vector of the fluid is of length one. We establish four kinds of blow-up criteria, including (i) the Serrin type; (ii) the Beal-Kato-Majda type; (iii) the mixed type, i.e., Serrin type condition for one field and Beal-Kato-Majda type condition on the other one; (iv) a new one, which characterizes the maximal existence time of the strong solutions to the Ericksen-Leslie system in terms of Serrin type norms of the strong solutions to the Ginzburg-Landau approximate system. Furthermore, we also prove that the strong solutions of the Ginzburg-Landau approximate system converge to the strong solution of the Ericksen-Leslie system up to the maximal existence time.

Global Weak Solutions to Non-isothermal Nematic Liquid Crystals in 2D

In this paper, we prove the global existence of weak solutions to the non-isothermal nematic liquid crystal system on $\mathbb T^2$, based on a new approximate system which is different from the classical Ginzburg-Landau approximation. Local energy inequalities are employed to recover the estimates on the second order spacial derivatives of the director fields locally in time, which cannot be derived from the basic energy balance. It is shown that these weak solutions conserve the total energy and while the kinetic and potential energies transfer to the heat energy precisely. Furthermore, it is also established that these weak solutions have at most finite many singular times at which the energy concentration occurs, and as a result, the temperature must increase suddenly at each singular time on some part of $\mathbb T^2$.

Global Well-Posedness and Large Time Asymptotic Behavior of Classical Solutions to the Compressible Navier-Stokes Equations with Vacuum

This paper concerns the global well-posedness and large time asymptotic behavior of strong and classical solutions to the Cauchy problem of the Navier-Stokes equations for viscous compressible barotropic flows in two or three spatial dimensions with vacuum as far field density. For strong and classical solutions, some a priori decay with rates (in large time) for both the pressure and the spatial gradient of the velocity field are obtained provided that the initial total energy is suitably {small.} Moreover, by using these key decay rates and some analysis on the expansion rates of the essential support of the density, we establish the global existence and uniqueness of classical solutions (which may be of possibly large oscillations) in two spatial dimensions, provided the smooth initial data are of small total energy. In addition, the initial density can even have compact support. This, in particular, yields the global regularity and uniqueness of the re-normalized weak solutions of Lions-Feireisl to the two-dimensional compressible barotropic flows for all adiabatic number $γ>1$ provided that the initial total energy is small.

Smooth Transonic Flows in De Laval Nozzles

This paper concerns smooth transonic flows of Meyer type in finite de Laval nozzles, which are governed by an equation of mixed type with degeneracy and singularity at the sonic state. First we study the properties of sonic curves. For any $C^2$ transonic flow of Meyer type, the set of exceptional points is shown to be a closed line segment (may be empty or only one point). Furthermore, it is proved that a flow with nonexceptional points is unstable for a $C^1$ small perturbation in the shape of the nozzle. Then we seek smooth transonic flows of Meyer type which satisfy physical boundary conditions and whose sonic points are exceptional. For such a flow, its sonic curve must be located at the throat of the nozzle and it is strongly singular in the sense that the sonic curve is a characteristic degenerate boundary in the subsonic-sonic region, while in the sonic-supersonic region all characteristics from sonic points coincide, which are the sonic curve and never approach the supersonic region. It is proved that there exists uniquely such a smooth transonic flow near the throat of the nozzle, whose acceleration is Lipschitz continuous, if the wall of the nozzle is sufficiently flat.

Global classical solutions to the two-dimensional compressible Navier-Stokes equations in $\mathbb{R}^2$

In this paper, we prove the global well-posedness of the classical solution to the 2D Cauchy problem of the compressible Navier-Stokes equations with arbitrarily large initial data when the shear viscosity $μ$ is a positive constant and the bulk viscosity $ł(\r)=\r^\b$ with $\b>\frac43$. Here the initial density keeps a non-vacuum states $\barρ>0$ at far fields and our results generalize the ones by Vaigant-Kazhikhov [41] for the periodic problem and by Jiu-Wang-Xin [26] and Huang-Li [8] for the Cauchy problem with vacuum states $\barρ=0$ at far fields. It shows that the solution will not develop the vacuum states in any finite time provided the initial density is uniformly away from vacuum. And the results also hold true when the initial data contains vacuum states in a subset of $\mathbb{R}^2$ and the natural compatibility conditions are satisfied. Some new weighted estimates are obtained to establish the upper bound of the density.

Global well-posedness of the Cauchy problem of two-dimensional compressible Navier-Stokes equations in weighted spaces

In this paper, we study the global well-posedness of classical solution to 2D Cauchy problem of the compressible Navier-Stokes equations with large initial data and vacuum. It is proved that if the shear viscosity $μ$ is a positive constant and the bulk viscosity $λ$ is the power function of the density, that is, $λ(ρ)=ρ^β$ with $β>3$, then the 2D Cauchy problem of the compressible Navier-Stokes equations on the whole space $\mathbf{R}^2$ admit a unique global classical solution $(ρ,u)$ which may contain vacuums in an open set of $\mathbf{R}^2$. Note that the initial data can be arbitrarily large to contain vacuum states. Various weighted estimates of the density and velocity are obtained in this paper and these self-contained estimates reflect the fact that the weighted density and weighted velocity propagate along with the flow.

Subsonic Flows in a Multi-Dimensional Nozzle

In this paper, we study the global subsonic irrotational flows in a multi-dimensional ($n\geq 2$) infinitely long nozzle with variable cross sections. The flow is described by the inviscid potential equation, which is a second order quasilinear elliptic equation when the flow is subsonic. First, we prove the existence of the global uniformly subsonic flow in a general infinitely long nozzle for arbitrary dimension for sufficiently small incoming mass flux and obtain the uniqueness of the global uniformly subsonic flow. Furthermore, we show that there exists a critical value of the incoming mass flux such that a global uniformly subsonic flow exists uniquely, provided that the incoming mass flux is less than the critical value. This gives a positive answer to the problem of Bers on global subsonic irrotational flows in infinitely long nozzles for arbitrary dimension. Finally, under suitable asymptotic assumptions of the nozzle, we obtain the asymptotic behavior of the subsonic flow in far fields by a blow-up argument. The main ingredients of our analysis are methods of calculus of variations, the Moser iteration techniques for the potential equation and a blow-up argument for infinitely long nozzles.

Vacuum behaviors around rarefaction waves to 1D compressible Navier-Stokes equations with density-dependent viscosity

In this paper, we study the large time asymptotic behavior toward rarefaction waves for solutions to the 1-dimensional compressible Navier-Stokes equations with density-dependent viscosities for general initial data whose far fields are connected by a rarefaction wave to the corresponding Euler equations with one end state being vacuum. First, a global-in-time weak solution around the rarefaction wave is constructed by approximating the system and regularizing the initial data with general perturbations, and some a priori uniform-in-time estimates for the energy and entropy are obtained. Then it is shown that the density of any weak solution satisfying the natural energy and entropy estimates will converge to the rarefaction wave connected to vacuum with arbitrary strength in super-norm time-asymptotically. Our results imply, in particular, that the initial vacuum at far fields will remain for all the time which are in contrast to the case of non-vacuum rarefaction waves studied in \cite{JWX} where all the possible vacuum states will vanish in finite time. Finally, it is proved that the weak solution becomes regular away from the vacuum region of the rarefaction wave.

Blowup Criterion for the Compressible Flows with Vacuum States

We prove that the maximum norm of the deformation tensor of velocity gradients controls the possible breakdown of smooth(strong) solutions for the 3-dimensional compressible Navier-Stokes equations, which will happen, for example, if the initial density is compactly supported \cite{X1}. More precisely, if a solution of the compressible Navier-Stokes equations is initially regular and loses its regularity at some later time, then the loss of regularity implies the growth without bound of the deformation tensor as the critical time approaches. Our result is the same as Ponce's criterion for 3-dimensional incompressible Euler equations (\cite{po}). Moreover, our method can be generalized to the full Compressible Navier-Stokes system which improve the previous results. In addition, initial vacuum states are allowed in our cases.

Global existence of solutions of the Liquid Crystal flow for the Oseen-Frank model

In the first part of this paper, we establish global existence of solutions of the liquid crystal (gradient) flow for the well-known Oseen-Frank model. The liquid crystal flow is a prototype of equations from the Ericksen-Leslie system in the hydrodynamic theory and generalizes the heat flow for harmonic maps into the 2-sphere. The Ericksen-Leslie system is a system of the Navier-Stokes equations coupled with the liquid crystal flow. In the second part of this paper, we also prove global existence of solutions of the Ericksen-Leslie system for a general Oseen-Frank model in $\Bbb R^2$.

Global Well-Posedness of Classical Solutions with Large Oscillations and Vacuum to the Three-Dimensional Isentropic Compressible Navier-Stokes Equations

We establish the global existence and uniqueness of classical solutions to the Cauchy problem for the isentropic compressible Navier-Stokes equations in three spatial dimensions with smooth initial data which are of small energy but possibly large oscillations with constant state as far field which could be either vacuum or non-vacuum. The initial density is allowed to vanish and the spatial measure of the set of vacuum can be arbitrarily large, in particular, the initial density can even have compact support. These results generalize previous results on classical solutions for initial densities being strictly away from vacuum, and are the first for global classical solutions which may have large oscillations and can contain vacuum states.

Serrin Type Criterion for the Three-Dimensional Viscous Compressible Flows

We extend the well-known Serrin's blowup criterion for the three-dimensional (3D) incompressible Navier-Stokes equations to the 3D viscous compressible cases. It is shown that for the Cauchy problem of the 3D compressible Navier-Stokes system in the whole space, the strong or smooth solution exists globally if the velocity satisfies the Serrin's condition and either the supernorm of the density or the $L^1(0,T;L^\infty)$-norm of the divergence of the velocity is bounded. Furthermore, in the case that either the shear viscosity coefficient is suitably large or there is no vacuum, the Serrin's condition on the velocity can be removed in this criteria.

Stability of Rarefaction Waves to the 1D Compressible Navier-Stokes Equations with Density-dependent Viscosity

In this paper, we study the asymptotic stability of rarefaction waves for the compressible isentropic Navier-Stokes equations with density-dependent viscosity. First, a weak solution around a rarefaction wave to the Cauchy problem is constructed by approximating the system and regularizing the initial values which may contain vacuum state. Then some global in time estimates on the weak solution are obtained. Based on these uniform estimates, the vacuum states are shown to vanish in finite time and the weak solution we constructed becomes a unique strong one. Consequently, the stability of the rarefaction wave is proved in a weak sense. The theory holds for large-amplitudes rarefaction waves and arbitrary initial perturbations.

Stability of Transonic Shock Solutions for One-Dimensional Euler-Poisson Equations

In this paper, both structural and dynamical stabilities of steady transonic shock solutions for one-dimensional Euler-Poission system are investigated. First, a steady transonic shock solution with supersonic backgroumd charge is shown to be structurally stable with respect to small perturbations of the background charge, provided that the electric field is positive at the shock location. Second, any steady transonic shock solution with the supersonic background charge is proved to be dynamically and exponentially stable with respect to small perturbation of the initial data, provided the electric field is not too negative at the shock location. The proof of the first stability result relies on a monotonicity argument for the shock position and the downstream density, and a stability analysis for subsonic and supersonic solutions. The dynamical stability of the steady transonic shock for the Euler-Poisson equations can be transformed to the global well-posedness of a free boundary problem for a quasilinear second order equation with nonlinear boundary conditions. The analysis for the associated linearized problem plays an essential role.

A Blow-Up Criterion for the Compressible Navier-Stokes equations

In this paper, we obtain a blow up criterion for strong solutions to the 3-D compressible Naveri-Stokes equations just in terms of the gradient of the velocity, similar to the Beal-Kato-Majda criterion for the ideal incompressible flow. The key ingredients in our analysis are the a priori super-norm estimate of the momentum by a Moser-iteration and an estimate of the space-time square mean of the gradient of the density. In addition, initial vacuum is allowed in our case.
