Global spherically symmetric classical solutions for arbitrary large initial data of the multi-dimensional non-isentropic compressible Navier-Stokes equations

In 1871, Saint-Venant introduced the shallow water equations. Since then, the global classical solutions for arbitrary large initial data of the multi-dimensional viscous Saint-Venant system have remained a well-known open problem. It was only recently that [Huang-Meng-Zhang, http:arXiv:2512.15029, 2025], under the assumption of radial symmetry, first proved the existence of global classical solutions for arbitrary large initial data to the initial-boundary value problem of the two-dimensional viscous shallow water equations. At the same time, [Chen-Zhang-Zhu, http:arXiv:2512.18545, 2025] also independently proved the existence of global large solutions to the Cauchy problem of this system. Notably, in the work of Huang-Meng-Zhang, they also established the existence of global classical solutions for arbitrary large initial data to the isentropic compressible Navier-Stokes equations satisfying the BD entropy equality in both two and three dimensions, and the viscous shallow water equations are precisely a specific class of isentropic compressible fluids subject to the BD entropy equality. In this paper, we prove a new BD entropy inequality for a class of non-isentropic compressible fluids, which can be regarded as a generalization of the shallow water equations with transported entropy. Employing new estimates on the lower bound of density different from that of Huang-Meng-Zhang's work, we show the "viscous shallow water system with transport entropy" will admit global classical solutions for arbitrary large initial data to the spherically symmetric initial-boundary value problem in both two and three dimensions. Our results also relax the restrictions on the dimension and adiabatic index imposed in Huang-Meng-Zhang's work on the shallow water equations, extending the range from $N=2,\ γ\ge \frac{3}{2}$ to $N=2,\ γ> 1$ and $N=3,\ 1<γ<3$.

Existence and uniqueness of weak solutions of the compressible spherically symmetric Navier-Stokes equations

One of the most influential fundamental tools in harmonic analysis is Riesz transform. It maps $L^p$ functions to $L^p$ functions for any $p\in (1,\infty)$ which plays an important role in singular operators. As an application in fluid dynamics, the norm equivalence between $\|\nabla u\|_{L^p}$ and $\|\mbox{div} u\|_{L^p}+\|\mbox{curl} u\|_{L^p}$ is well established for $p\in (1,\infty)$. However, since Riesz operators sent bounded functions only to BMO functions, there is no hope to bound $\|\nabla u\|_{L^\infty}$ in terms of $\|\mbox{div} u\|_{L^\infty}+\|\mbox{curl} u\|_{L^\infty}$. As pointed out by Hoff[{\it SIAM J. Math. Anal.} {\bf 37}(2006), No. 6, 1742-1760], this is the main obstacle to obtain uniqueness of weak solutions for isentropic compressible flows. Fortunately, based on new observations, see Lemma \ref{Riesz}, we derive an exact estimate for $\|\nabla u\|_{L^\infty}\le (2+1/N)\|\mbox{div} u\|_{L^\infty}$ for any N-dimensional radially symmetric vector functions $u$. As a direct application, we give an affirmative answer to the open problem of uniqueness of some weak solutions to the compressible spherically symmetric flows in a bounded ball.

Global solvability of 3D inhomogeneous Navier-Stokes equations with density-dependent viscosity

In this paper, we consider the three-dimensional inhomogeneous Navier-Stokes equations with density-dependent viscosity in presence of vacuum over bounded domains. Global-in-time unique strong solution is proved to exist when $\|\nabla u_0\|_{L^2}$ is suitably small with arbitrary large initial density. This generalizes all the previous results even for the constant viscosity.

On formation of singularity for non-isentropic Navier-Stokes equations without heat-conductivity

It is known that smooth solutions to the non-isentropic Navier-Stokes equations without heat-conductivity may lose their regularities in finite time in the presence of vacuum. However, in spite of the recent progress on such blowup phenomenon, it remain to give a possible blowup mechanism. In this paper, we present a simple continuation principle for such system, which asserts that the concentration of the density or the temperature occurs in finite time for a large class of smooth initial data, which is responsible for the breakdown of classical solutions. It also give an affirmative answer to a strong version of conjecture proposed by J.Nash in 1950s

On Formation of Singularity of Spherically Symmetric Nonbarotropic Flows

We study an initial boundary value problem on a ball for the heat-conductive system of compressible Navier-Stokes-Fourier equations, in particular, a criterion of breakdown of the classical solution. For smooth initial data away from vacuum, it is proved that the classical solution which is spherically symmetric loses its regularity in a finite time if and only if the {\bf density} {\it concentrates} or {\it vanishes} or the {\bf velocity} becomes unbounded around the center. One possible situation is that a vacuum ball appears around the center and the density may concentrate on the boundary of the vacuum ball simultaneously.

Global Well-Posedness of Classical Solutions to the Cauchy problem of Two-Dimensional Baratropic Compressible Navier-Stokes System with Vacuum and Large Initial Data

For smooth initial data, we establish the global existence and uniqueness of strong and classical solutions to the Cauchy problem for the barotropic compressible Navier-Stokes equations in two spatial dimensions with vacuum state as far field and with no restrictions on the size of initial data provided the shear viscosity is a positive constant and the bulk one is $λ= ρ^β$ with $β>4/3$.

Global Wellposeness for the 3D inhomogeneous incompressible Navier-Stokes equations

This paper addresses the three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations for an incompressible fluid whose density is permitted to be inhomogeneous. We establish a theorem of global existence and uniqueness of strong solutions for initial data with small $\dot{H}^{\frac12}$-norm, which also satisfies a natural compatibility condition. A key point of the theorem is that the initial density need not be strictly positive.

On some new global existence result of 3D Magnetohydrodynamic equations

This paper is devoted to the incompressible Magenetohydrodynamic equations in $\R^3$. We prove that if the difference between the magnetic field and the velocity is small initially then it will remain forever, thus results in global strong solution without smallness restriction on the size of initial velocity or magnetic field. In other words, magnetic field can indeed regularize the Navier-Stokes equations, due to cancelation.

Existence and Blowup Behavior of Global Strong Solutions to the Two-Dimensional Baratropic Compressible Navier-Stokes System with Vacuum and Large Initial Data

For periodic initial data with initial density allowed to vanish, we establish the global existence of strong and weak solutions for the two-dimensional compressible Navier-Stokes equations with no restrictions on the size of initial data provided the bulk viscosity coefficient is $λ= ρ^β$ with $β>4/3$. These results generalize and improve the previous ones due to Vaigant-Kazhikhov([Sib. Math. J. (1995), 36(6), 1283-1316]) which requires $β>3$. Moreover, both the uniform upper bound of the density and the large-time behavior of the strong and weak solutions are also obtained.

Global Strong solution with vacuum to the 2D nonhomogeneous incompressible MHD system

In this paper, we first prove the unique global strong solution with vacuum to the two dimensional nonhomogeneous incompressible MHD system, as long as the initial data satisfies some compatibility condition. As a corollary, the global existence of strong solution with vacuum to the 2D nonhomogeneous incompressible Navier-Stokes equations is also established. Our main result improves all the previous results where the initial density need to be strictly positive. The key idea is to use some critical Sobolev inequality of logarithmic type, which is originally due to Brezis-Wainger.

Serrin-Type Blowup Criterion for Viscous, Compressible, and Heat Conducting Navier-Stokes and Magnetohydrodynamic Flows

This paper establishes a blowup criterion for the three-dimensional viscous, compressible, and heat conducting magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) flows. It is essentially shown that for the Cauchy problem and the initial-boundary-value one of the three-dimensional compressible MHD flows with initial density allowed to vanish, the strong or smooth solution exists globally if the density is bounded from above and the velocity satisfies the Serrin's condition. Therefore, if the Serrin norm of the velocity remains bounded, it is not possible for other kinds of singularities (such as vacuum states vanish or vacuum appears in the non-vacuum region or even milder singularities) to form before the density becomes unbounded. This criterion is analogous to the well-known Serrin's blowup criterion for the three-dimensional incompressible Navier-Stokes equations, in particular, it is independent of the temperature and magnetic field and is just the same as that of the barotropic compressible Navier-Stokes equations. As a direct application, it is shown that the same result also holds for the strong or smooth solutions to the three-dimensional full compressible Navier-Stokes system describing the motion of a viscous, compressible, and heat conducting fluid.

Global Classical and Weak Solutions to the Three-Dimensional Full Compressible Navier-Stokes System with Vacuum and Large Oscillations

We establish the global existence and uniqueness of classical solutions to the three-dimensional full compressible Navier-Stokes system with smooth initial data which are of small energy but possibly large oscillations where the initial density is allowed to vanish. Moreover, for the initial data which may be discontinuous and contain vacuum states, we also obtain the global existence of weak solutions. These results generalize previous ones on classical and weak solutions for initial density being strictly away from vacuum, and are the first for global classical and weak solutions which may have large oscillations and can contain vacuum states.

Blowup Criterion for the Compressible Flows with Vacuum States

We prove that the maximum norm of the deformation tensor of velocity gradients controls the possible breakdown of smooth(strong) solutions for the 3-dimensional compressible Navier-Stokes equations, which will happen, for example, if the initial density is compactly supported \cite{X1}. More precisely, if a solution of the compressible Navier-Stokes equations is initially regular and loses its regularity at some later time, then the loss of regularity implies the growth without bound of the deformation tensor as the critical time approaches. Our result is the same as Ponce's criterion for 3-dimensional incompressible Euler equations (\cite{po}). Moreover, our method can be generalized to the full Compressible Navier-Stokes system which improve the previous results. In addition, initial vacuum states are allowed in our cases.

Global Well-Posedness of Classical Solutions with Large Oscillations and Vacuum to the Three-Dimensional Isentropic Compressible Navier-Stokes Equations

We establish the global existence and uniqueness of classical solutions to the Cauchy problem for the isentropic compressible Navier-Stokes equations in three spatial dimensions with smooth initial data which are of small energy but possibly large oscillations with constant state as far field which could be either vacuum or non-vacuum. The initial density is allowed to vanish and the spatial measure of the set of vacuum can be arbitrarily large, in particular, the initial density can even have compact support. These results generalize previous results on classical solutions for initial densities being strictly away from vacuum, and are the first for global classical solutions which may have large oscillations and can contain vacuum states.

Serrin Type Criterion for the Three-Dimensional Viscous Compressible Flows

We extend the well-known Serrin's blowup criterion for the three-dimensional (3D) incompressible Navier-Stokes equations to the 3D viscous compressible cases. It is shown that for the Cauchy problem of the 3D compressible Navier-Stokes system in the whole space, the strong or smooth solution exists globally if the velocity satisfies the Serrin's condition and either the supernorm of the density or the $L^1(0,T;L^\infty)$-norm of the divergence of the velocity is bounded. Furthermore, in the case that either the shear viscosity coefficient is suitably large or there is no vacuum, the Serrin's condition on the velocity can be removed in this criteria.

A Blow-Up Criterion for the Compressible Navier-Stokes equations

In this paper, we obtain a blow up criterion for strong solutions to the 3-D compressible Naveri-Stokes equations just in terms of the gradient of the velocity, similar to the Beal-Kato-Majda criterion for the ideal incompressible flow. The key ingredients in our analysis are the a priori super-norm estimate of the momentum by a Moser-iteration and an estimate of the space-time square mean of the gradient of the density. In addition, initial vacuum is allowed in our case.
