Generalizing the calculable $R$-matrix theory and eigenvector continuation to the incoming wave boundary condition

The calculable $R$-matrix theory has been formulated successfully for regular boundary conditions with vanishing radial wave functions at the coordinate origins [P. Descouvemont and D. Baye, Rept. Prog. Phys. 73, 036301 (2010)]. We generalize the calculable $R$-matrix theory to the incoming wave boundary condition (IWBC), which is widely used in theoretical studies of low-energy heavy-ion fusion reactions to simulate the strong absorption of incoming flux inside the Coulomb barriers. The generalized calculable $R$-matrix theory also provides a natural starting point to extend eigenvector continuation (EC) [D. Frame et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 121, 032501 (2018)] to fusion observables. The ${}^{14}\text{N}+{}^{12}\text{C}$ fusion reaction is taken as an example to validate these new theoretical tools. Both local and nonlocal potentials are considered in numerical calculations. Our generalizations of the calculable $R$-matrix theory and EC are found to work well for IWBC.

Nucleon-pair coupling scheme in Elliott's SU(3) model

Elliott's SU(3) model is at the basis of the shell-model description of rotational motion in atomic nuclei. We demonstrate that SU(3) symmetry can be realized in a truncated shell-model space if constructed in terms of a sufficient number of collective $S$, $D$, $G$, $\dots$ pairs (i.e., with angular momentum zero, two, four, $\dots$) and if the structure of the pairs is optimally determined either by a conjugate-gradient minimization method or from a Hartree-Fock intrinsic state. We illustrate the procedure for 6 protons and 6 neutrons in the $pf$ ($sdg$) shell and exactly reproduce the level energies and electric quadrupole properties of the ground-state rotational band with $SDG$ ($SDGI$) pairs. The $SD$-pair approximation without significant renormalization, on the other hand, cannot describe the full SU(3) collectivity. A mapping from Elliott's fermionic SU(3) model to systems with $s$, $d$, $g$, $\dots$ bosons provides insight into the existence of a decoupled collective subspace in terms of $S$, $D$, $G$, $\dots$ pairs.

Evolution of clustering structure through the momentum distributions in $^{8-10}$Be isotopes

We investigate the evolution of clustering structure through the momentum distributions in the $^{8-10}$Be isotopes. The nucleon dynamics within the inter-cluster antisymmetrization are discussed via the momentum distribution of a Brink type $α$-$α$ wave function. For the state with a small $α$-$α$ distance, we observe a significant depression with a dip structure at zero-momentum and an enhanced tail at relatively higher momentum region. In addition, we find the "cluster structure" in the intrinsic frame of momentum space, which is complementary to its significant $α$-cluster dissolution in the coordinate space because of the strong antisymmetrization. For the physical $^{8-10}$Be isotopes, the Tohsaki-Horiuchi-Schuck-R{ö}pke (THSR) wave functions are adopted. The evolution from the dilute clustering state to the compact one is demonstrated by a successive depression at the zero-momentum of nucleon distribution for the two $α$-clusters within $^{8-10}$Be isotopes. For the compact $^{10}$Be nucleus, the momentum distribution of all nucleons shows significant depression at zero-momentum with a dip structure, which is found to be contributed by both the inter-cluster antisymmetrization and the $p$-orbit occupation of the valence neutrons. This study proposes a new window for the investigations of the $α$-clustering effects via the low-momentum components of nuclei, which is expected to be extended to the heavier nuclear clustering states.

Resonant and Scattering States in the $α+α$ System from the Non-Localized Cluster Model

The non-localized cluster model provides a new perspective on nuclear cluster effects and has been applied successfully to study cluster structures in various bound states and quasi-bound states (i.e., long-lived resonant states). In this work, we extend the application scope of the non-localized cluster model further to resonant and scattering states. Following the $R$-matrix theory, the configuration space is divided into the interior and exterior regions by a large channel radius such that the nuclear forces and the antisymmetrization effects become negligible between clusters in the exterior region. In the interior region, the picture of non-localized clustering is realized mathematically by adopting the Brink-Tohsaki-Horiuchi-Schuck-Röpke (Brink-THSR) wave functions as the bases to construct the interior wave functions. The Bloch-Schrödinger equation is used to match the interior wave functions continuously with the asymptotic boundary conditions of the resonant and scattering states at the channel radius, which leads eventually to solutions of the problem. As a first test of the formalism, the low-lying resonant states of ${}^{8}$Be and the phase shifts of the $α+α$ elastic scattering are studied. The numerical results agree well with the experimental data, which shows the validity of the theoretical framework.

Alpha Decay to Doubly Magic Core in Quartetting Wave Function Approach

We present a microscopic calculation of $α$-cluster formation in heavy nuclei $^{104}$Te ($α$+$^{100}$Sn), $^{212}$Po ($α$+$^{208}$Pb) and their neighbors $^{102}$Sn, $^{102}$Te, $^{210}$Pb and $^{210}$Po by using the quartetting wave function approach. Improving the local density approximation, the shell structure of the core nucleus is considered, and the center-of-mass (c.o.m.) effective potential for the quartet is obtained self-consistently from the shell model wavefunctions. The $α$-cluster formation and decay probabilities are obtained by solving the bound-state of the c.o.m. motion of the quartet and the scattering state of the formed $α$-cluster in the Gurvitz approach. Striking shell effects on the $α$-cluster formation probabilities are analyzed for magic numbers 50, 82 and 126. The computed $α$-decay half-lives of these special nuclei are compared with the newest experimental data.

Breathing-like excited state of the Hoyle state in ${^{12}{\rm C}}$

The existence of the $0_3^+$ and $0_4^+$ states around 10 MeV excitation energy in ${^{12}{\rm C}}$ is confirmed by a fully microscopic 3$α$ cluster model. Firstly, a GCM (generator coordinate method) calculation is performed by superposing optimized 2$α$+$α$ THSR (Tohsaki-Horiuchi-Schuck-Röpke) wave functions with the radius-constraint method. The obtained two excited $0^+$ states above the Hoyle state are consistent with the recently observed states by experiment. Secondly, a variational calculation using the single 2$α$+$α$ THSR wave function orthogonalized to the ground and Hoyle states is made and it also supports the existence of the $0_3^+$ state obtained by the GCM calculation. The analysis of the obtained $0_3^+$ state is made by studying its 2$α$-$α$ reduced width amplitude, its 2$α$ correlation function, and the large monopole matrix element between this state and the Hoyle state, which shows that this $0_3^+$ state is a breathing-like excited state of the Hoyle state. This character of the $0_3^+$ state is very different from the $0_4^+$ state which seems to have a bent-arm 3$α$ structure.

Theoretical study on nuclear structure by the multiple Coulomb scattering and magnetic scattering of relativistic electrons

Electron scattering is an effective method to study the nuclear structure. For the odd-$A$ nuclei with proton holes in the outmost orbits, we investigate the contributions of proton holes to the nuclear quadrupole moments $Q$ and magnetic moments $μ$ by the multiple Coulomb scattering and magnetic scattering. The deformed nuclear charge densities are constructed by the relativistic mean-field (RMF) models. Comparing the theoretical Coulomb and magnetic form factors with the experimental data, the nuclear quadrupole moments $Q$ and nuclear magnetic moments $μ$ are investigated. From the electron scattering, the wave functions of the proton holes of odd-$A$ nuclei can be tested, which can also reflect the validity of the nuclear structure model.

Algebraic structure of the two-qubit quantum Rabi model and its solvability using Bogoliubov operators

We have found the algebraic structure of the two-qubit quantum Rabi model behind the possibility of its novel quasi-exact solutions with finite photon numbers by analyzing the Hamiltonian in the photon number space. The quasi-exact eigenstates with at most $1$ photon exist in the whole qubit-photon coupling regime with constant eigenenergy equal to single photon energy \hbarω, which can be clear demonstrated from the Hamiltonian structure. With similar method, we find these special "dark states"-like eigenstates commonly exist for the two-qubit Jaynes-Cummings model, with $E=N\hbarω$ (N=-1,0,1,...), and one of them is also the eigenstate of the two-qubit quantum Rabi model, which may provide some interesting application in a simper way. Besides, using Bogoliubov operators, we analytically retrieve the solution of the general two-qubit quantum Rabi model. In this more concise and physical way, without using Bargmann space, we clearly see how the eigenvalues of the infinite-dimensional two-qubit quantum Rabi Hamiltonian are determined by convergent power series, so that the solution can reach arbitrary accuracy reasonably because of the convergence property.

Alpha Decay Width of $^{212}$Po from a quartetting wave function approach

A microscopic calculation of $α$-cluster preformation probability and $α$ decay width in the typical $α$ emitter $^{212}$Po is presented. Results are obtained by improving a recent approach to describe $α$ preformation in $^{212}$Po [Phys. Rev. C 90, 034304 (2014)] implementing four-nucleon correlations (quartetting). Using the actually measured density distribution of the $^{208}$ Pb core, the calculated alpha decay width of $^{212}$Po agrees fairly well with the measured one.

Half-lives of Double $β^+$-decay with Two Neutrinos

Nuclear double $β^-$-decays with two neutrinos were observed for many years and a systematic law describing the relation between their half-lives and decay energies was also proposed recently [Phys. Rev. C89, 064603 (2014)]. However, double $β^+$-decay ($β^+β^+)$ with emission of both two positrons and two neutrinos has not been observed up to date. In this article, we perform a systematic analysis on the candidates of double $β^+$-decay, based on the 2012 nuclear mass table. Eight nuclei are found to be the good candidates for double $β^+$-decay and their half-lives are predicted according to the generalization of the systematic law to double $β^+$-decay. As far as we know, there is no theoretical result on double $β^+$-decay of nucleus $^{154}Dy$ and our result is the first prediction on this nucleus. This is also the first complete research on eight double $β^+$-decay candidates based on the available data of nuclear masses. It is expected that the calculated half-lives of double $β^+$-decay in this article will be useful for future experimental search of double $β^+$-decay.

Superfluidity of $Λ$ hyperons in warm strange hadronic star matter

In this work we evaluate the $^1S_0$ superfluidity of $Λ$ hyperons in $β$-stable strange hadronic matter. We investigate the equation of state (EOS) of hadronic matter at finite values of baryon density and temperature in the relativistic mean field (RMF) theory. Effects of the introduced isoscalar-isovector cross-interaction term on the $Λ$ superfluidity are investigated systematically. In addition, the temperature effects on the superfluidity of $Λ$ hyperons in hadronic matter are discussed. It is found that the density region and the magnitude of the $Λ$ pairing gap are dependent on the cross-interaction term. The obtained maximal critical temperature of $Λ$ superfluid is around $10^9$ K.

Bound clusters on top of doubly magic nuclei

An effective $α$ particle equation is derived for cases where an $α$ particle is formed on top of a doubly magic nucleus. As an example, we consider $^{212}$Po with the $α$ on top of the $^{208}$ Pb core. We will consider the core nucleus infinitely heavy, so that the $α$ particle moves with respect to a fixed center, i.e., recoil effects are neglected. The fully quantal solution of the problem is discussed. The approach is inspired by the THSR (Tohsaki-Horiuchi-Schuck-Röpke) wave function concept that has been successfully applied to light nuclei. Shell model calculations are improved by including four-particle ($α$-like) correlations that are of relevance when the matter density becomes low. In the region where the $α$-like cluster penetrates the core nucleus, the intrinsic bound state wave function transforms at a critical density into an unbound four-nucleon shell model state. Exploratory calculations for $^{212}$Po are presented. Such preformed cluster states are only hardly described by shell model calculations. Reasons for different physics behavior of an $α$-like cluster with respect to a deuteron-like cluster are discussed.

Half-lives of $α$ decay from natural nuclides and from superheavy elements

Recently, experimental researches on the $α$ decay with long lifetime are one of hot topics in the contemporary nuclear physics [e.g. N. Kinoshita {\sl et al.} (2012) and J. W. Beeman {\sl et al.} (2012) ]. In this study, we have systematically investigated the extremely long-lived $α$-decaying nuclei within a generalized density-dependent cluster model involving the experimental nuclear charge radii. In detail, the important density distribution of daughter nuclei is deduced from the corresponding experimental charge radii, leading to an improved $α$-core potential in the quantum tunneling calculation of $α$-decay width. Besides the excellent agreement between theory and experiment, predictions on half-lives of possible candidates for natural $α$ emitters are made for future experimental detections. In addition, the recently confirmed $α$-decay chain from $^{294}$117 is well described, including the attractive long-lived $α$-decaying $^{270}$Db, i.e., a positive step towards the "island of stability" in the superheavy mass region.

Investigation of ${}^9$Be from nonlocalized clustering concept

The nonlocalized aspect of clustering, which is a new concept for self-conjugate nuclei, is extended for the investigation of the N{\not=}Z nucleus ${}^9$Be. A modified version of the THSR (Tohsaki-Horiuchi-Schuck-Röpke) wave function is introduced based on the container picture. It is found that the constructed negative-parity THSR wave function is very suitable for describing the cluster states of ${}^9$Be. Namely the nonlocalized clustering is shown to prevail in ${}^9$Be. The calculated binding energy and radius of ${}^9$Be are consistent with calculations in other models and with experimental values. The squared overlaps between the THSR wave function and the Brink+GCM wave function for the $3/2^-$ rotational band of ${}^9$Be are found to be near 96%. Furthermore, by showing the density distribution of the ground state of ${}^9$Be, the π-orbit structure is naturally reproduced by using this THSR wave function.

Regular and exceptional spectra of the two-qubit quantum Rabi model

Two-qubit system is the foundation of constructing the universal quantum gate. We have studied the two-qubit Rabi model for the general case and its generalizations with dipole, XXX and XYZ Heisenberg qubit-qubit interactions, which are commonly used in quantum computation. Their solutions are presented analytically with eigenstates can be obtained in terms of extended coherent states or Fock states and applied to the construction of the ultrafast two-qubit quantum gate in circuit QED and quantum state storage and transfer. Some novel kinds of quasi-exact solutions are found for specific sets of parameters, causing level crossings within the same parity subspace, which do not appear in the regular spectrum, indicating its non-integrability. These eigenstates are very interesting for quantum computing and single photon experiments because they are formed by just a few Fock states, and in some cases, with at most one photon. They are also easy to prepare, since they exist for all qubit-photon coupling values with constant eigenenergy and the qubit energy splittings can be fine tuned in the experiment in contrast to the coupling.

Systematic Law for Half-lives of Double $β$-decay with Two Neutrinos

Nuclear double $β$-decay with two neutrinos is a rare and important process for natural radioactivity of unstable nuclei. The experimental data of nuclear double $β^{-}$-decay with two neutrinos are analyzed and a systematic law to calculate the half-lives of this rare process is proposed. It is the first analytical and simple formula for double $β$-decay half-lives where the leading effect from both the Coulomb potential and nuclear structure is included. The systematic law shows that the logarithms of the half-lives are inversely proportional to the decay energies for the ground state transitions between parent nuclei and daughter nuclei. The calculated half-lives are in agreement with the experimental data of all known eleven nuclei with an average factor of 3.06. The half-lives of other possible double $β$-decay candidates with two neutrinos are predicted and these can be useful for future experiments. The law, without introducing any extra adjustment, is also generalized to the calculations of double $β$-decay half-lives from the ground states of parent nuclei to the first $0^+$ excited states of daughter nuclei and the calculated half-lives agree very well with the available data. Some calculated half-lives are the first theoretical results of double $β$-decay half-lives from the ground states of parent nuclei to the first $0^+$ excited states of daughter nuclei. The similarity and difference between the law of $α$-decay and that of double $β^{-}$-decay are also analyzed and discussed.

The container picture with two-alpha correlation for the ground state of $^{12}$C

It is shown that the single $0^+$ THSR (Tohsaki-Horiuchi-Schuck-Röpke) wave function which is extended to include 2$α$ correlation is almost completely equivalent to the 3$α$ wave function obtained as the full solution of 3$α$ cluster model. Their squared overlap is as high as 98\% while it is 93\% if the 2$α$ correlation is not included. This result implies that, by incorporating the 2$α$ correlation in the 3$α$ model, the ground state of $^{12}$C is describable in the container picture which is valid for the Hoyle state for which the 2$α$ correlation is weak and a single $0^+$ THSR wave function without 2$α$ correlation is almost completely equivalent to the full solution of 3$α$ cluster model.

Effect of nuclear deformation on direct capture reactions

The direct radiative capture process is well described by the spherical potential model. In order for the model to explain direct captures more accurately, the effect of the nuclear deformation has been added and analyzed in this work, since most nucleuses are not spherical. The results imply that the nuclear deformation largely affects the direct capture and should be taken into account during discussing direct capture reactions.

Nonlocalized cluster dynamics and nuclear molecular structure

A container picture is proposed for understanding cluster dynamics where the clusters make nonlocalized motion occupying the lowest orbit of the cluster mean-field potential characterized by the size parameter $``B"$ in the THSR (Tohsaki-Horiuchi-Schuck-Röpke) wave function. The nonlocalized cluster aspects of the inversion-doublet bands in $^{20}$Ne which have been considered as a typical manifestation of localized clustering are discussed. So far unexplained puzzling features of the THSR wave function, namely that after angular-momentum projection for two cluster systems the prolate THSR wave function is almost 100$\%$ equivalent to an oblate THSR wave function is clarified. It is shown that the true intrinsic two-cluster THSR configuration is nonetheless prolate. The proposal of the container picture is based on the fact that typical cluster systems, 2$α$, 3$α$, and $α$+$^{16}$O, are all well described by a single THSR wave function. It will be shown for the case of linear-chain states with two and three $α$-clusters as well as for the $α$+$^{16}$O system that localization is entirely of kinematical origin, that is, due to the inter-cluster Pauli repulsion. It is concluded that this feature is general for nuclear cluster states.

Nonlocalized Clustering: A New Concept in Nuclear Cluster Structure Physics

We investigate the $α$+\oo\ cluster structure in the inversion-doublet band ($K^π=0_{1}^\pm$) states of \nene\ with an angular-momentum-projected version of the Tohsaki-Horiuchi-Schuck-Röpke (THSR) wave function, which was successful "in its original form" for the description of, e.g., the famous Hoyle state. In contrast with the traditional view on clusters as localized objects, especially in inversion doublets, we find that these {\it single} THSR wave functions, which are based on the concept of nonlocalized clustering, can well describe the $K^π=0_1^-$ band and the $K^π=0_1^+$ band. For instance, they have 99.98% and 99.87% squared overlaps for $1^-$ and $3^- $ states (99.29%, 98.79% and 97.75% for $0^+, 2^+$ and $4^+$ states), respectively, with the corresponding exact solution of the $α$+\oo\ resonating group method. These astounding results shed a completely new light on the physics of low energy nuclear cluster states in nuclei: The clusters are nonlocalized and move around in the whole nuclear volume, only avoiding mutual overlap due to the Pauli blocking effect.

Single-Λ Hypernuclei in the Relativistic Mean-Field Theory with parameter set FSU

In this work, we conduct a study on the properties of single-Λ hypernuclei in the relativistic mean-field theory with the parameter set FSU, where the isoscalar-isovector coupling has been included to soften the symmetry energy. In our model, a tensor coupling between ω and Λ is employed, which is found to be essential in obtaining the small spin-orbit interaction in single-Λ hypernuclei. Our calculated values of Λ single-particle energies are in good agreement with the known experimental data. As a comparison to other existing parameter sets, calculations are also carried out by using parameterizaions such as NL3 and NL3*. The results show that the parameter set FSU is as successful as those of NL3 and NL3* in terms of reproducing the properties of single-Λ hypernuclei.

Constructing quantum circuits for maximally entangled multi-qubit states using the genetic algorithm

Numerical optimization methods such as hillclimbing and simulated annealing have been applied to search for highly entangled multi-qubit states. Here the genetic algorithm is applied to this optimization problem -- to search not only for highly entangled states, but also for the corresponding quantum circuits creating these states. Simple quantum circuits for maximally (highly) entangled states are discovered for 3, 4, 5, and 6-qubit systems; and extension of the method to systems with more qubits is discussed. Among other results we have found explicit quantum circuits for maximally entangled 5 and 6-qubit circuits, with only 8 and 13 quantum gates respectively. One significant advantage of our method over previous ones is that it allows very simple construction of quantum circuits based on the quantum states found.

Effect of final state interactions on particle production in $d$+Au collisions at RHIC

We show that particle species dependence of enhanced hadron production at intermediate transverse momentum (p_{T}) for d+Au collisions at RHIC can be understood in terms of the hadronic rescatterings in the final state. A multiphase transport model (AMPT) with two different hadronization mechanisms: string fragmentation or parton coalescence, is used in our study. When the hadrons are formed from string fragmentation, the subsequent hadronic rescatterings will result in particle mass dependence of nuclear modification factor R_{CP}, which is consistent with the present experimental data. On the other hand, in the framework of parton coalescence, the mass dependence disappears and the strangeness plays an important role. Both mechanisms failed to reproduce the p_{T} dependence of R_{CP} of pion, indicating that initial-state effects might be also important in such collisions.

Brewster's angle for anisotropic material from the extinction theorem

By the extinction theorem we explore the Brewster effect in the external and internal reflections of electromagnetic wave associated with an anisotropic material that is both dielectric and magnetic, including metamaterials. We obtain Fresnel's coefficients and the condition of Brewster's angle, and give microscopic explanations from the view point of molecular optics. The Brewster angle is the incidence of angle at which the contribution of all electric and magnetic dipoles in the anisotropic material to the reflection field becomes zero. Distinct from isotropic media, the anisotropic material can exhibit Brewster angle for both TE and TM waves due to the anisotropy of the material.
