Information fusion approach for biomass estimation in a plateau mountainous forest using a synergistic system comprising UAS-based digital camera and LiDAR

Forest land plays a vital role in global climate, ecosystems, farming and human living environments. Therefore, forest biomass estimation methods are necessary to monitor changes in the forest structure and function, which are key data in natural resources research. Although accurate forest biomass measurements are important in forest inventory and assessments, high-density measurements that involve airborne light detection and ranging (LiDAR) at a low flight height in large mountainous areas are highly expensive. The objective of this study was to quantify the aboveground biomass (AGB) of a plateau mountainous forest reserve using a system that synergistically combines an unmanned aircraft system (UAS)-based digital aerial camera and LiDAR to leverage their complementary advantages. In this study, we utilized digital aerial photogrammetry (DAP), which has the unique advantages of speed, high spatial resolution, and low cost, to compensate for the deficiency of forestry inventory using UAS-based LiDAR that requires terrain-following flight for high-resolution data acquisition. Combined with the sparse LiDAR points acquired by using a high-altitude and high-speed UAS for terrain extraction, dense normalized DAP point clouds can be obtained to produce an accurate and high-resolution canopy height model (CHM). Based on the CHM and spectral attributes obtained from multispectral images, we estimated and mapped the AGB of the region of interest with considerable cost efficiency. Our study supports the development of predictive models for large-scale wall-to-wall AGB mapping by leveraging the complementarity between DAP and LiDAR measurements. This work also reveals the potential of utilizing a UAS-based digital camera and LiDAR synergistically in a plateau mountainous forest area.

A Series of Plasma Innovation Technologies by Double Glow Discharge Phenomenon

In order to break the limitation of plasma nitriding technology, which can be applied to a few nonmetallic gaseous elements, the "Double Glow Discharge Phenomenon" was found and then invented the "Double Glow Plasma Surface Metallurgy Technology". This double glow plasma surface metallurgy technology can use any element in the periodic table of chemical elements for surface alloying of metal materials. Countless surface alloys with special physical and chemical properties have been produced on the surfaces of conductive materials.By using double glow discharge phenomenon,a series of new plasma technologies, such as the double glow plasma graphene technology, double glow plasma brazing technology, double glow plasma sintering technology, double glow plasma nanotechnology, double glow plasma cleaning technology, double glow plasma carburizing without hydrogen and so on, have been invented.A very simple phenomenon of double glow discharge can generate about 10 plasma innovation technologies, which fully shows that there is still a lot of innovation space on the basis of classical physics. This paper briefly introduces the basic principles, functions and characteristics of each technology. The application prospects and development directions of plasma in metal materials and machinery manufacturing industry will also be discussed.

Plasma Surface Metallurgy of Materials Based on Double Glow Discharge Phenomenon

Plasma Surface Metallurgy/Alloying is a kind of surface metallurgy/alloying to employ low temperature plasma produced by glow discharge to diffuse alloying elements into the surface of substrate material to form an alloy layer. The first plasma surface metallurgy technology is plasma nitriding invented by German scientist Dr. Bernard Berghuas in 1930. He was the first person to apply glow discharge to realize the surface alloying. In order to break the limitation of plasma nitriding technology, which can only be applied to a few non-metallic gaseous elements such as nitrogen, carbon, sulfur, the "Double Glow Discharge Phenomenon"was found in 1978. Based on this phenomenon the "Double Glow Plasma Surface Metallurgy Technology", also known as the "Xu-Tec Process" was invented in 1980. It can utilize any chemical elements in the periodic table including solid metallic, gas non-metallic elements and their combination to realize plasma surface alloying, hence greatly expanded the field of surface alloying. Countless surface alloys with high hardness, wear resistance and corrosion resistance, such as high speed steels, nickel base alloys and burn resistant alloys have been produced on the surfaces of a variety of materials. This technology may greatly improve the surface properties of metal materials, comprehensively improve the quality of mechanical products, save a lot of precious alloy elements for human beings. Based on the plasma nitriding technology, the Xu-Tec Process has opened up a new material engineering field of "Plasma Surface Metallurgy". This Review Article briefly presents the history of glow discharge and surface alloying, double glow discharge phenomenon, basic principle and current status of Double Glow Plasma Surface Metallurgy/Alloying. Industrial applications, advantages and future potential of the Xu-Tec process are also presented.

A new S-type eigenvalue localization set for tensors and its applications

A new \emph{S}-type eigenvalue localization set for tensors is derived by breaking $N=\{1,2,\cdots,n\}$ into disjoint subsets $S$ and its complement. It is proved that this new set is tighter than those presented by Qi (Journal of Symbolic Computation 40 (2005) 1302-1324), Li et al. (Numer. Linear Algebra Appl. 21 (2014) 39-50) and Li et al. (Linear Algebra Appl. 493 (2016) 469-483). As applications, checkable sufficient conditions for the positive definiteness and the positive semi-definiteness of tensors are proposed. Moreover, based on this new set, we establish a new upper bound for the spectral radius of nonnegative tensors and a lower bound for the minimum \emph{H}-eigenvalue of weakly irreducible strong \emph{M}-tensors in this paper. We demonstrate that these bounds are sharper than those obtained by Li et al. (Numer. Linear Algebra Appl. 21 (2014) 39-50) and He and Huang (J. Inequal. Appl. 114 (2014) 2014). Numerical examples are also given to illustrate this fact.

Kosterlitz-Thouless transition in disordered two-dimensional topological insulators

The disorder-driven metal-insulator transition in the quantum spin Hall systems is studied by scaling analysis of the Thouless conductance $g$. Below a critical disorder strength, the conductance is independent of the sample size $M$, an indication of critically delocalized electron states. The calculated beta function $β=d\ln g/d\ln M$ indicates that the metal-insulator transition is Kosterlitz-Thouless (KT) type, which is characterized by bounding and unbounding of vortex-antivortex pairs of the local currents. The KT like metal-insulator transition is a basic characteristic of the quantum spin Hall state, being independent of the time-reversal symmetry.

Time-reversal-symmetry-broken quantum spin Hall effect

Quantum spin Hall (QSH) state of matter is usually considered to be protected by time-reversal (TR) symmetry. We investigate the fate of the QSH effect in the presence of the Rashba spin-orbit coupling and an exchange field, which break both inversion and TR symmetries. It is found that the QSH state characterized by nonzero spin Chern numbers $C_{\pm}=\pm 1$ persists when the TR symmetry is broken. A topological phase transition from the TR symmetry-broken QSH phase to a quantum anomalous Hall phase occurs at a critical exchange field, where the bulk band gap just closes. It is also shown that the transition from the TR symmetry-broken QSH phase to an ordinary insulator state can not happen without closing the band gap.

Topologically Protected Extended States in Disordered Quantum Spin-Hall Systems without Time-Reversal Symmetry

We demonstrate the existence of robust bulk extended states in the disordered Kane-Mele model with vertical and horizontal Zeeman fields, in the presence of a large Rashba coupling. The phase diagrams are mapped out by using level statistics analysis and computations of the localization length and spin-Chern numbers $C_\pm$. $C_\pm$ are protected by the finite energy and spin mobility gaps. The latter is shown to stay open for arbitrarily large vertical Zeeman fields, or for horizontal Zeeman fields below a critical strength or at moderate disorder. In such cases, a change of $C_\pm$ is necessarily accompanied by the closing of the mobility gap at the Fermi level. The numerical simulations reveal sharp changes in the quantized values of $C_\pm$ when crossing the regions of bulk extended states, indicating that the topological nature of the extended states is indeed linked to the spin-Chern numbers. For large horizontal Zeeman fields, the spin-gap closes at strong disorder prompting a change in the quantized spin-Chern numbers without a closing of the energy mobility gap.
