Electric field induced metallic behavior in thin crystals of ferroelectric α-In2Se3

Ferroelectric semiconductor field effect transistors (FeSmFETs), which employ ferroelectric semiconducting thin crystals of α-In2Se3 as the channel material as opposed to the gate dielectric in conventional ferroelectric FETs (FeFETs) were prepared and measured from room to the liquid-helium temperatures. These FeSmFETs were found to yield evidence for the reorientation of the electrical polarization and an electric field induced metallic state in α-In2Se3. Our findings suggest that FeSmFETs can serve as a platform for the fundamental study of ferroelectric metals as well as the exploration of the integration of data storage and logic operations in the same device.

Non-line-of-sight imaging off a Phong surface through deep learning

A deep learning based non-line-of-sight (NLOS) imaging system is developed to image an occluded object off a scattering surface. The neural net is trained using only handwritten digits, and yet exhibits capability to reconstruct patterns distinct from the training set, including physical objects. It can also reconstruct a cartoon video from its scattering patterns in real time, demonstrating the robustness and generalization capability of the deep learning based approach. Several scattering surfaces with varying degree of Lambertian and specular contributions were examined experimentally; it is found that for a Lambertian surface the structural similarity index (SSIM) of reconstructed images is about 0.63, while the SSIM obtained from a scattering surface possessing a specular component can be as high as 0.93. A forward model of light transport was developed based on the Phong scattering model. Scattering patterns from Phong surfaces with different degrees of specular contribution were numerically simulated. It is found that a specular contribution of as small as 5% can enhance the SSIM from 0.83 to 0.93, consistent with the results from experimental data. Singular value spectra of the underlying transfer matrix were calculated for various Phong surfaces. As the weight and the shininess factor increase, i.e., the specular contribution increases, the singular value spectrum broadens and the 50-dB bandwidth is increased by more than 4X with a 10% specular contribution, which indicates that at the presence of even a small amount of specular contribution the NLOS measurement can retain significantly more singular value components, leading to higher reconstruction fidelity. With an ordinary camera and incoherent light source, this work enables a low-cost, real-time NLOS imaging system without the need of an explicit physical model of the underlying light transport process.

High-Q silk fibroin whispering gallery microresonator

We have experimentally demonstrated an on-chip all-silk fibroin whispering gallery mode microresonator by using a simple molding and solution-casting technique. The quality factors of the fabricated silk protein microresonators are up to 10^5. A high-sensitivity thermal sensor was realized in this silk fibroin microtoroid with sensitivity of 1.17 nm/K, 8 times higher than previous WGM resonator based thermal sensors. This opens the way to fabricate biodegradable and biocompatible protein based microresonators on a flexible chip for biophotonics applications.

High-resolution Collinear Chiral Sum Frequency Generation Microscopy by Using Vectorial Beam

In chiral sum frequency generation (C-SFG), the chiral nature of $χ^{(2)}$ requires the three involved electric fields to be pairwise non-parallel, leading to the traditional non-collinear configuration which is a hindrance for achieving diffraction limited resolution while utilizing it as a label-free imaging contrast mechanism . Here we propose a collinear C-SFG (CC-SFG) microscopy modality by using longitudinal z-polarized vectorial field. Label-free chiral imaging with enhanced spatial resolution (~1.4 times improvement in one lateral and the longitudinal directions over the traditional non-collinear scheme) is demonstrated, providing a new path for SFG microscopy with diffraction-limited resolution for mapping chirality.

Quaternion-Valued Single-Phase Model for Three-Phase Power Systems

In this work, a quaternion-valued model is proposed in lieu of the Clarke's α, βtransformation to convert three-phase quantities to a hypercomplex single-phase signal. The concatenated signal can be used for harmonic distortion detection in three-phase power systems. In particular, the proposed model maps all the harmonic frequencies into frequencies in the quaternion domain, while the Clarke's transformation-based methods will fail to detect the zero sequence voltages. Based on the quaternion-valued model, the Fourier transform, the minimum variance distortionless response (MVDR) algorithm and the multiple signal classification (MUSIC) algorithm are presented as examples to detect harmonic distortion. Simulations are provided to demonstrate the potentials of this new modeling method.

Three-Dimensional Wind Profile Prediction with Trinion-Valued Adaptive Algorithms

The problem of three-dimensional (3-D) wind profile prediction is addressed based a trinion wind model, which inherently reckons the coupling of the three perpendicular components of a wind field. The augmented trinion statistics are developed and employed to enhance the prediction performance due to its full exploitation of the second-order statistics. The proposed trinion domain processing can be regarded as a more compact version of the existing quaternion-valued approach, with a lower computational complexity. Simulations based on recorded wind data are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed methods.

Multi-threshold second-order phase transition

We present a theory of the multi-threshold second-order phase transition, and experimentally demonstrate the multi-threshold second-order phase transition phenomenon. With carefully selected parameters, in an external cavity diode laser system, we observe second-order phase transition with multiple (three or four) thresholds in the measured power-current-temperature three dimensional phase diagram. Such controlled death and revival of second-order phase transition sheds new insight into the nature of ubiquitous second-order phase transition. Our theory and experiment show that the single threshold second-order phase transition is only a special case of the more general multi-threshold second-order phase transition, which is an even richer phenomenon.

Three-Dimensional Grain Boundary Spectroscopy in Transparent High Power Ceramic Laser Materials

Using confocal Raman and fluorescence spectroscopic imaging in 3-dimensions, we show direct evidence for Nd3+-Nd3+ interactions across grain boundaries (GBs) in Nd3+:YAG laser ceramics. It is clearly shown that Nd3+ segregation takes place at GBs leading to self-fluorescence quenching which affects a volume fraction as high as 20%. In addition, we show a clear trend of increasing spatial inhomogeneities in Nd3+ concentration when the doping levels exceeds 3 at%, which is not detected by standard spectrometry techniques. These results could point the way to further improvements in what is already an impressive class of ceramic laser materials.
